Today we are bringing on our very own STK member Brea Quin on the show! STK is so much more than one speaker or podcast host. We are a whole team and it's high time you get to meet all of us! Brea is a mom of two from a small town in Northern Utah. She is a Certified Health Education Specialist and earned her bachelor's degree in Health Promotion with an emphasis in child development and education from Weber State University. She has been with Save the Kids since 2021. Brea's passion for the Save the Kids movement grew as she followed Collin Kartchner over the years and became solidified after she had her first child and was able to start implementing everything he was teaching. She has worked with kids in different areas over the years and has seen, both on large and small scales, how early introduction to tech, social media, and pornography affects childhood. Because of this, Brea has become dedicated to helping families nurture their relationships, turn off the screens, and #StopGivingKidsSmartphones, and has been working hard to create content and posts for Save the Kids to keep this message going. Remember what it was like to be a teenager? Do you remember the insecurity around discovering yourself? Now, imagine your teenage self with not only a school full of peers to compare yourself to, but with an entire internet full of people to measure up to, to compete with for likes, and pictures of parties you weren't invited to. Can you imagine how hard that would be? Well many of our kids are experiencing just that. They are floundering in the deep end of a virtual pool before their brains are developed enough to metaphorically swim. The research is coming in fast about the giant social experiment of putting the pocket-sized computers into the hands of young children and teens, and the results are…alarming, to say the least. In this episode, we are thrilled to discuss this important subject with social activist and champion of giving back our children a healthy childhood, the late Collin Kartchner. We are devastated at his passing but want his legacy and his message to live on. Collin helps us to understand the direness of the situation concerning kids and their internet consumption, specifically social media and online gaming. These platforms are designed specifically to give our minds dopamine hits, which can to dependence, and provides the false sense of connection that kids are craving. This can create a vacuum in their minds that may lead to depression and lack of connection to people around them. Although this information at first paints a bleak picture for childhood, we discuss the beautiful antidote that is at all of our fingertips: connection. REAL connection with actual humans in our lives. Collin offers concrete advice about trying out a family screen detox, and gives us lots of inspiring suggestions on how to increase the connection in our own home with the people we love. His rallying cry to #savethekids will truly inspire you and leave you hopeful that you can truly make a difference in your child's life (and how to model freedom from screen dependence yourself:)! At Unashamed Unafraid we share real stories with you that prove sexual addiction has no bounds of age, background, or gender, and that recovery is possible for anyone. Yes, women struggle too and here is more proof as Ashlee, our 2nd female to share on the podcast, opens up about her struggle with sexual addiction. We invite you to listen as Steve and Chris challenge Ashlee to abandon her notes and go off-script, sharing her story Unashamed-style, from the heart. Ashlee discusses how her addiction to pornography began after her parents gave her a smart phone when she was 12. She describes the shame she felt as she struggled to live up to the “perfect child” image her parents had of her as she was growing up. In the middle of her teen years her family moved from their farm and homeschool lifestyle to a neighborhood where Ashlee found herself adjusting to a traditional high school. As she sought for ways to numb out she plunged deeper in her addiction to pornography and masturbation. She kept this a secret from everyone until one day her cousin opened up about a struggle she was having and this opened the door for Ashlee to finally share about her addiction. She talked with her bishop and began making lifestyle changes that helped her stop viewing pornography. However, about 6 months later, a surgery brought on new challenges for Ashlee in which she developed an eating disorder. Her desire to numb from her eating addiction drove her back to her pornography addiction. Overwhelmed and feeling alone Ashlee searched for anyone she could relate to but couldn't find any women who were open about having similar struggles. In her search she found Collin Kartchner's podcast where Ashlee first shared her story publicly. From there she was able to share her story through multiple venues but she felt like a hypocrite as she still secretly struggled with masturbation. As Ashlee has come to understand God's love for her, and as she has found other women who share similar struggles, she has started to find healing. Ashlee invites you to reach out to her through direct message on Instagram @ashleeayre.Resources: Daughters of Light, https://lifechangingservices.online/daughtersoflight Has Ashlee's story hit home for you? If you or someone you know is struggling with a sex addiction, Unashamed Unafraid is the podcast and website for you! Our amazing friend from our team did a social media detox with Ginger Root Society. It sparked conversation on our team, and we decided it was the perfect topic to share in the collective. This episode is amazing, and we hope you are inspired to be more present with your family, and realize how distracting social media can be. We talk about taking time off, and share how you can create boundaries with it if you run your business from social media. One thing that stood out to us is realizing that distraction in life has become a FULL TIME JOB. Like people are spending up to 8+ hours a day outside of working hours on their screens. WHAT! It was a great reminder that our phones and the people who are on our phones are not the most important thing. The people in front of you are! One thing we love about the company we are with is that top leaders remind us to GET OFF OUR PHONES. That we do not need our work to consume us, which is such an important reminder since we are doing most of our work from our phones. Here is a reminder to you, if you find yourself feeling yucky after scrolling social media, start learning to rock the UNFOLLOW button. You can decide who and what you see. Take that control. Create that boundary. If you get the chance make sure check out Collin Kartchner. He is all about saving the children, and has a great TED TALK that might just be what you need to hear. Smith Alley, at the age of 17, has been inspired this year to start his own not-for-profit and business to pursue his passion of helping parents and children understand the risks involved in children's use of screen time, pornography, and social media after experiencing his own addiction and recovery. He has become an inspirational leader in his efforts and follows in the footsteps of his mentor, Collin Kartchner, founder of Save The Kids, who recently passed away and has given Smith even more fire to push further in his pursuits. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/theselfemployedjourney/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/theselfemployedjourney/support

At what age is it appropriate to give your kid a smartphone? How can we #savethekids from the dangers of social media? This is the work Collin Kartchner dedicated what ended up being the final years of his life to.I had planned to have Collin on the Podcast to share his mission, but unfortunately, that time never came. Collin Kartchner passed away suddenly on October 20th, 2020. So, even though he cannot be here today, it is my honor to share his mission with all of you. He fought hard for our kids and it's in our hands now to carry the torch. Today in our country and across the globe we are seeing an epidemic rise in the levels of anxiety, depression, and suicide among our teenagers. According to the CDC, suicide is the second leading cause of death for 10-24 year old Americans. The rate of death by suicide in people 10-24 years old increased 57.4% over the 10 year period from 2007 to 2018. DeDe and Chelsea were among the many who were so saddened to hear of the passing of Collin Kartchner last month. He left behind his beautiful wife and four children. Our Episode 65 (about the Social Dilemma) had just come out the week of his passing, and on it DeDe discussed what she learned from Collin in one of his podcast episodes. Collin Kartchner was an incredible force for good in the world. His mission was to #SavetheKids … from the harmful effects of smart phones, pornography, and social media addiction. He also taught us parents SO much: about how technology is eroding family relationships, and how our children are modeling our behavior. Collin was MAKING A DIFFERENCE in a huge way. After his passing, his wife Lizzy posted: “If he made an impression on your life, inspired you to change your direction to a clearer course even if it was hard, if he made you laugh, touched your heart … help him live on in you.” And that is why we are doing this episode. We want his memory and his fight to live on .. so we are doing our small part to continue his conversation on this podcast. Join in and listen to Dede and Chelsea share their “beauties” that they learned from Collin Kartchner. Help spread Collin’s message and share this episode with your tribe. Recently I had a friend pass away, and I was grateful to be able to visually see the ripple effect that his life had on the world. Hit me up on IG! @russellbrunson Text Me! 208-231-3797 Join my newsletter at marketingsecrets.com ---Transcript--- Hey, everybody. This is Russell Brunson, welcome back to the Marketing Secrets podcast. Today, I want to talk to you a little about legacy and what that actually means. I had a friend who passed away yesterday, and still kind of dealing with it. But because of the legacy that he's created and what's happening, that's the thing that's helping me to process this and to be okay with it. And I want to show this to you and hopefully it gives you guys some meaning for the work that you do as well. All right, everybody, yesterday we lost somebody who, honestly, one of the people... I didn't get to know him super well. I talked to him a few times, watched him speak, and then had messages back and forth through Instagram and things like that. Someone I have a ton of respect for. His name is Collin Kartchner some viewers may have heard of him before. First time I heard of him it makes the kind of Boise, Idaho, he did an assembly at our kid's school, talking to them about the dangers of cell phones and social media and TikTok and Snapchat and all these things. And man, one of the most charismatic people, funny, like just awesome. He Was able to connect with kids at a level that they had. It's just amazing. And ever since I follow him on Instagram, it's funny because he's got, tens of thousands of followers and they're all kids and he only follows one person, which is his wife. He's like, I know it's ironic that I'm on Instagram with all these things, but I'm trying to save the kids from these things. And at Instagram he posts these pictures of people who hear him at assemblies like, I was planning to commit suicide today, I came to assembly though and I realize now it's because of social media. I deleted these apps. I changed my phone, got rid of my phone and just like person after person like, if you want to go to Instagram and see what legacy looks like, go read through his posts and see the tens of thousands of lives that he's affected because of his message. And I watched him as he did this, like when he came to Boise, he spoke our schools, needed an event. We all went to it and a bunch of other things and trained parents. And I think as he got paid, I don't know, two or 300 bucks to come and do his thing, like almost nothing, but he had a mission. He was called to serve a group of people. And for him, he was called to serve children to serve teenagers. And to help them, to help protect them from the damage that social media is causing. And he'd always used the #SavetheKids, #SavetheKids. And like, man, he was just, and he was consistent. I saw him traveling from school to school, city to city, state to state, making almost no money because he loved the people he was called to serve. How do I save these kids? How do I do this in a way where I can motivate them, inspire them. And he had to go through all the things that you guys are going through as business owners. He had to learn how to find his voice. He had to learn how to craft a message, how to keep people's attention, how to find it, like all the things he went through because he had a mission and he knew it and he knew the people he was called to serve. And now it's just so sad. Like he's 40 years old, passed away and a couple things are interesting. And I've been like all day and all night, just reflecting on this. Like, I can't imagine... My wife and I were talking like, what happened if I was dead or she was dead what would you do? And especially when you're out in the public eyes so much, there's, I feel bad. His wife, obviously tons of texts and messages and she's posting like, no, we're not fine. No, yes, it's true. You know? And like, so hard. And then somebody, I don't know, a friend threw up a GoFundMe page less than 24 hours ago. It's less than 24 hours to go through this, GoFundMe page. And you know, I've donated a lot of GoFundMe things. I've never, I ended off from, I went and I donated, I shared on my page and then I just kind of watching it, as it's grown. And right now it was created 20 hours ago. And it is about to pass $200,000 in donations. And this is not like a whole bunch of $10,000 donations. This donation of by 3,300 different donors. 3,300 people, when they heard about this tragedy came to this page and donated their 10 their 20 their 30 bucks to show Collin and his family, how much he meant to them. And again, we're 20 hours in, my guess is within, a week or two it's going to be 40 million half who knows. But man, what a Testament to the work this man did. Right? And I saw one of my friends posted, the thing and said he only dedicated his life to saving the children. And now his children at home without a father and we need to help save their children. And I just like in tears, I'm like, Oh my gosh, like this man who dedicated and donated so much of himself to save kids. And it's like, what's the least we can do. Right. But again, sorry, like I keep thinking about this. I keep thinking about like, the legacy like, it's so sad and it's so horrible, man. This person is a 40 year old. Did this thing put this thing out there. And how many, like the ripple effect of this one man's life, like what's going to happen? Like how many other kids that are going to be affected and then their kids and then their kids and generations will be served because this man was on earth because he followed the calling. He heard the voice, right? He was called to serve a group of people. He did it with his whole heart, his whole soul. And it's just interesting. You guys seen the movie It's a Wonderful Life where at the end, Jimmy Stewart goes and... Or at the very beginning, Jimmy Stewart has a chance to his life was like what the world would be like, he wasn't born and you see this like, happens to Bedford Falls and it's just horrible. It's, and then he comes back and his life. You see like how great things are because he hit that one person who was on this earth. And I think, I hope that someday when we all have a chance to meet our maker, that he sits down with us and says, I want you to see the ripple effect that your life created. And I hope I pray, I think that'll be the greatest gift any of us could get, is to be able to see like the opposite, kind of like Jimmy Stewart, a little bit different, but like here's the lives that were affected because you came to earth because you followed your calling because you were willing to step up amongst the heat and the pressure and the stress and all the things and, serve the people you were called to serve. Because what's interesting is it's never just the people we're called to serve, right? It starts with them. But then it bleeds into their families and their kids and then their kids' kids and then their communities and like the ripple effect. We can never see it. We can never track it on our own. Man, how cool it'd be someday to be able to sit with our maker and he shows you like, hey, this is the ripple effect that your life had. I think in a small way with Collin Kartchner's Memorial fund that they went up 20 hours ago, we're able to see this ripple effect through 3,300 people in 20 hours have donated 10, 20, 30 bucks to raise almost $200,000 so far for this amazing family. And anyway, it's just one thing that's been sad for us and our family, but then man, I just hope that things I'm doing that someday, I have this kind of legacy. Not that I want you all donating to my kids when I die, but just the impact, right? Like this one man's life had on the world. And I hope that he is having that chance right now, sits with his maker and be like, and having a chance to really understand what he did, and the impact it really does have. So anyway, I guess I'm sharing this with you guys, because I know that a lot of times this journey is lonely, it's hard, it's frustrating. But it wasn't supposed to be easy, right? It was easy then how would you have the impact, right? The difficulty of it is I think how you're prepared for it. It's how you prepare for the calling. Like I wish I could say that, this click funnels journey has been all sunshine and roses. It's been brutal yesterday and yesterday I got beat up bad by four five different places where I was just like, why am I doing this? You know? And then to hear Collin's thing. And like, I think the only thing that can be through yesterday was like looking at him like, Oh my gosh, look at the impact he's having like someday. I'm hoping that people say about my life, about my work and by the things I've been trying to do, as imperfect as I have been in and I will continue to be, I've done my best to try to follow what I believe is right. And so hopefully it gives you guys just, I don't know. I just it gives me hope, gives me excitement gives me purpose. I hope it does for you as well. So with that said, I think Collin Kartchner for his impact on the world, and I want to thank you for your impact on the world. Don't ignore your callings. Don't ignore that voice that tug that feeling. It's just like, I got something in here. I need to change someone's life. I know I got something don't ignore that. Don't walk away from that. That's something that's real, it's there, right? In the scriptures it says that many are called, but few are chosen. I think about that a lot. Like I think all of us get the tug. We all get the prompting. We all get the, whatever you want to call it, right? Where you're like, I should go help this person. I should be doing these things. I should be creating this stuff. We all hear that we all feel it. Many are called, but few are chosen because most people don't listen. They don't follow through. You're chosen by your actions. If you heed the call and you move forward and you do the thing then our maker gives you a little bit more, he says, Hey, this person is a good steward. And I gave him this idea I gave him this inspiration. They were a good steward of, let me give you a little more ideas. Let me give you another idea. And as you keep doing that and keep doing that, gives you the ability to have this huge impact on the world. So anyway, hope this helps for somebody who's listening out there. I appreciate you all. I appreciate the opportunity I have to serve you guys, and I hope I'm doing it right. I'm doing the best of my ability. I promise you. I can't tell you of the sleepless nights, I have just trying to figure out how to make sure I'm doing the best things for you guys and the community. A lot of hard decisions, but it's worth it. So I appreciate you guys keep fighting, keep having the impact and someday you'll have a chance to see the ripple effect that your life had on so many people. Thanks again. And I'll talk to you soon.
Tessa shares some of her thoughts moving forward with the podcast. She also shares some sad news about a big influencer in her mission and career (Collin Kartchner) and her plans on continuing his passion and message
This session boils down to this. In your process and journey what does success look like for you? In this episode I challenge us to define what success means to you and also what the world presents success to be. What do you want to accomplish in this life? No greater time than the present to think about what you want your legacy to look like after your time on this earth. Is it having all the money in the world? Is it having a certain image you want the world to see? I doubt it. Our tomorrow isn't promised. Shortly after recording this episode I found out someone I admire for his courageous outlook on life tragically died. He leaves behind four children, a beautiful wife and thousands of changed lives. This episode is dedicated Collin Kartchner and his #SAVETHEKIDS campaign.
Today, I'm republishing an episode with my dear friend, youth advocate, internet crusader and incredible human, Collin Kartchner, which was originally recorded in April of 2018. I'm putting this back out in the world with a little bit of commentary and whole lot of love. Collin's message and mission touched hundreds of thousands around the world as he taught parents to connect with their kids in this digital age, fought against the dangers of social media and spread the joy of 8 second hugs. I will never know the reason he was taken so soon, but I will continue to be inspired by his passion and support his mission in every way I can. He wanted parents to wake up to the dangers that surround our kids and families. Writing YA Fiction (0:00:00)I always like to hear about the books my kids are reading. Sometimes I'll even read them myself! Even though I'm not the intended audience, I love a good young adult novel! Good novels can really transport you to any time, place—or world—no matter what the age range is. Here to shed a little light on how this magic happens is young adult author Rick Riordan. Rick is the author of the Percy Jackson and the Olympians series and is wrapping up his latest series, “The Trials of Apollo,” this month with “The Tower of Nero.” COVID Secrets (0:37:53)“We all carry a secret that would break your heart if you just knew what it was. And if we could remember that, there might be more understanding and peace in the world.” These words were spoken by Frank Warren, the “most trusted stranger in America,” and the keeper of over one million anonymous secrets. For more than 15 years, people across the world have sent Frank their secrets via postcard, which he posts online weekly. And for more than 15 years, we have been able to see that our secrets don't always isolate us like they think we do; rather, they connect us to humanity. Well today, we are thrilled to have Frank on the show to talk to us about the secrets that he has received during the COVID-19 pandemic, and what they teach us about humanity during this unique time. Civic Duty (0:52:50)With election day coming up, people are excited to exercise their civic duty and cast their votes for the presidential candidate of their choice. However, our civic duty goes farther than just voting in the presidential election once every 4 years. It includes voting in local elections, serving our community, and participating in the marketplace of ideas among many other things. So, what do we need to know to be an active and engaged American citizen? Because the country can't function if we all don't do our part. Joining us today to share his advice is former Senator of Arizona, Jeff Flake. Quarantine Kids Got Talent (1:15:07)Two seasons. Hundreds of Submissions. Collin could have never imagined his quarantine talent show would get so much publicity and interaction. Collin Kartchner is a social media activist public speaker, and founder of the organization hashtag Save the Kids. Collin Kartchner is a local internet crusader, youth advocate, and social activist spreading education and awareness on the negative effects of social media and screen addiction on our mental and emotional health. In 2017, Collin started a parody Instagram account where he posed as a social media influencer obsessed with fame, likes, diet soda, plastic surgery, and used humor to shed light on how Instagram influencers perpetuate a culture of toxic perfectionism. His account grew to over 60,000 dedicated followers and he now travels across the state and country speaking to teens, parents, educators, and communities about how social media, specifically the correlation between teen social media and screen-time addiction and the epidemic spike in teen anxiety, depression, and suicide. This week, Collin Kartchner passed away unexpectedly. And, while social media can be a funny place, I (like many others) truly felt saddened by this loss. And that is because Collin was DOING GOOD. He wasn't just talking about or thinking about it-- he was living it every day and made it his life's mission to help save children from the dangers of smart phones. I have been sitting for a few days thinking about this loss and my heart and prayers truly go out to his family. This episode is my small offering to carry on the beautiful legacy that he built. The work he was doing is still needed. We need warriors like Collin. I am going to do my best to help continue his fight and strive to #SAVETHEKIDS.Links that you need to know about: Collin's Podcast: https://www.collinkartchner.com/podcastCollin's Ted Talk: https://youtu.be/uMb0wqTqE_4

Is your son/daughter playing video games a bit too much? Have you noticed changes in their attitude and behavior? Are you worried about what video games are doing to their developing brains and the impact that will have on their mental health and overall success in life? According to Newzoo, gamers worldwide are expected to spend nearly $160 billion in 2020 on video games. Let that number sink in. Kids are becoming so addicted to video games today they are hurting family members or themselves when the games are taken away. I get texts from ER docs saying kids as young as 10 attempted suicide simply because mom took away Fortnite. We lost a 6th grader in the neighboring city to suicide last year because mom took the X-box away. These are NOT just forms of entertainment, and kids are NOT wired to regulate and slow down their gaming time. And the gaming industry is taking full advantage of this making billions. Parents need to be their kids' brakes, but maybe it's time to get really consider getting your kids away from these games for good. Today's episode I interview a pediatric neurologist Dr. John Condie to give us some serious wake-the-bleep-up information on what these videos games are doing to kids, why they're doing what they do to kids, and why it's way past time to break your kids free from the merciless clutches of that dang X-Box/PS4/DS. This is one of the most eye-opening interviews I have conducted on the podcast yet, something every parent and teenager should listen to. Now excuse me while I go scream into a pillow. #savethekids #ditchthevideogames*************************************************************************If you want to keep your kids safe and save their childhood from being stolen from a smart phone/social media apps, get your kid a Gabb Phone click HERE for pre-loaded discount or use "SAVETHEKIDS" in checkout. (TV commercial voice): Do you suffer from NMK Disease? Do you say things like "Oh... Not MY Kid" or "Not My School" or "Not MY neighborhood" or "I trust my kid" or "My kid would never do that"? Well for those suffering with NMK, there's hope, and today I talk with long-time educator and New York resident Ronna Glickman for insight on how to be cured of NMK. FINALLY back speaking in person and I brought my mobile recording studio (mic + Zoom H4N) driving from Boise to McCall, Idaho, and wanted to talk about being emotionally present with your kids. Your emotional presence as a parent is the nutrient for your kids' development, and too many kids today are malnourished. I open up about a few things I/we do with our own kids each day so they know we as their parents love them, are here for them, they matter, they are important, and they are safe. ***********************************************************************************************If you want to keep your kids safe and save their childhood from being stolen from a smart phone/social media apps, get your kid a Gabb Phone click HERE for pre-loaded discount or use "SAVETHEKIDS" in checkout. I talk a lot about child and teen anxiety and how to help your kids not just manage the stresses of childhood/teen years but thrive through them… but what about us parents? Parenting is hard, stressful, and easy to feel like giving up some days. Parents who can't keep it together raise kids who can't keep it together, and today my guest Caris Snider and I talk about managing the stresses of parenting today and how to be more emotionally available and be a source of calm and grounded support for your kids. Caris is the author of the book “Anxiety Elephants”, a mother of 2, based in Alabama. Oh and my wife gobbled Caris' book up and said it was amazing help for her mental health. “Only boys struggle with porn.” “Girls only care about social media not porn.”“This is just a guy issue.”*Dwight Schrute voice* FALSE. Countless times I have read messages from tween/teen girls saying “Collin, I've been struggling with pornography for ______ time and it's eating me up inside, I feel horrible because porn is a guy issue, and I'm a girl, so what's wrong with me?” Gah. Nothing is wrong with you. By some expert estimates 90+ of boys will have some struggle with pornography as a teenager and 70%+ of girls will too. Guess what parents, girls are escaping to porn for the same reasons boys are. Today my guest is a very brave teenager name Ashlee who shares her story of how she was exposed to porn simply by a book her mom had on the shelf that was a how-to-talk-to-your-kids-about-porn. After mom gave her an iPhone, it was all downhill from there. Not until just a few months ago, Ashlee lived a 2nd life hiding this dark secret from everyone in her life, but now, after finally telling a trusted friend about her struggle, she's on the road to freedom. Since recording this episode I have had Ashlee join me speaking to 1000's of people (virtually) with so may teenage girls sharing afterwards how her story changed their lives—inspiring so many of them to open up about their own porn struggle and being the healing process. This interview is pretty awesome, a must listen for parents of girls no matter the age, and for any girl struggling with pornography to hear you're not alone, and there's a way out. You can watch Ashlee tell her story to 1000's at utahcoalition.org or send her a message @ashleeayre on Instagram***********************************************************************************************If you want to keep your kids safe and save their childhood from being stolen from a smart phone/social media apps, get your kid a Gabb Phone click HERE for pre-loaded discount or use "SAVETHEKIDS" in checkout. "Collin is a WARRIOR for our children." - Sean Reyes, Utah Attorney General In 2017, Collin started a popular parody Instagram account simply to make fun of social media and the culture of toxic perfectionism it has created. Instead of using his platform and large following to earn paid sponsor posts or ad dollars, he used his account to do good. When Hurricane Harvey hit Texas, Collin used social media to crowd-funded over $125,000 for Hurricane victims which he and his wife Liz then personally delivered to many families in Texas. Soon after when Hurricane Maria hit, he helped a group raise $350,000 for people in Puerto Rico. He then raised over $30,000 for three Utah children fighting cancer and threw the largest social-media created Christmas party for the kids. In February 2018, he raised over $15,000 in less than 12 hours to put "You are Loved" and "You are Beautiful" billboards across Utah seen an estimated 1.18M times. In April 2018, Collin started a campaign to #SavetheKids from social media and screen addiction's negative affect on their mental and emotional health. His message has resonated with the masses, as he has since spoke to 500,000+ youth and adults across the country with a speaking schedule now booked out 12-18 months. He was even invited to speak at TEDxSaltLakeCity in 2018, as well as for invitations to speak at companies like Nike and Adidas. He has been interviewed for TV and newspapers on this topic many times, including Fox13, KUTV-2, KSL News, Fresh Living as well as articles in Salt Lake Tribune and authored articles for Deseret News. Collin's messages for students of all ages, parents, educators, and businesses is engaging, entertaining, emotional, and inspiring. Collin is on a crusade to help educate parents on the damage social media and 24/7 access to peer culture will have on their child's mental health. His goal is to help teens rise above social media comparison, negativity, cyber bullying, and the stress of being perfect. Every day Collin gets 100's of message from teens sharing how social media is hurting their mental health, and how his message changed or even saved their lives. His #SavetheKids Parent Awareness Nights have been a huge success, empowering parents to stop fighting their teen's phone use and start fighting FOR their teen. These events are usually standing room only. Question I get a lot is "What do I do about my older teens who I gave a smart phone to years ago, they've been on Snapchat/IG since 11, I know it hurt their mental health so much, but I'm afraid to just take it all away. How do I go about putting the lion back into the cage?" Many times this issue has affected not just your teen negatively, but your entire family and your relationship with your son/daughter. Sure it's always easier to have just NOT given them this tech, so what do you do to unring the bell? My guest today is Andrea Davis, former educator and founder of Better Screen Time. She shares some sound and solid tips for parents of older teens looking to get their teenagers back, or better prepare them to successfully manage their tech as they get ready to become an adult. Joe Dennis, LCMHC, is back in studio today with his new J's for one of my favorite conversations thus far on The Collin Kartchner Podcast. We discuss 9/11, how hate is not a mental illness, the despicable things TikTok does to create trauma bonding among young users, how teen mental health issues are caused in part by decision fatigue, self-determination theory, and the struggles with this new generation of young adults finding authentic identity. My guest today is the founder of Protect Young Eyes and father of 4, Chris McKenna. We talk about what's happening to an entire generation of children/teens/young people right under our noses, and what parents need to do to save their kids' childhoods. Chris was in a recent documentary called "Childhood 2.0" which you can, and must, watch. (It's FREE btw) A 100% accurate depiction of what tech/gaming/social media/smart phone companies have been doing to this generation of kids and how it's changing the definition of childhood for millions-- and what this will lead to if we don't change things NOW. Chris is a long-time advocate and fighter for kids and families-- we worked together in bringing legislation (google The Earn It Act) to the federal government to FIX APP RATINGS which would create a 3rd party independent rating board for social media apps and mobile games. If TikTok and Snapchat are willfully letting obscene, adult content on their apps, why are they then rated 12+?? Until the world wakes up, Chris and I and others will keep shouting til the vocal chords finally give up. Don't forget to download upcoming PYE App for parents. For parents of kids' doing online schooling with Chromebooks please thoroughly read Chris's article on locking down that tech safely HERE. ************************************************************************************************If you want to keep your kids safe and save their childhood from being stolen from a smart phone/social media apps, get your kid a Gabb Phone click HERE for pre-loaded discount or use "SAVETHEKIDS" in checkout. This episode I have the honor of interviewing Elizabeth Frazier founder of Hero Bands. Elizabeth was sex trafficked by family members in Utah from age 4-23, all under the guise of a happy Utah family with good parents. A nightmare in ever sense of the word, Elizabeth broke free and now a mom of 5 kids, she shares her story to educate others and raise awareness to this epidemic too many think only occurs in dark places far across the world. This all was happening in an affluent Utah community. Elizabeth started Hero Bands to provide encouragement and hope, as well as help end child sex trafficking. Reminder that social media apps are the #1 tool predators use to groom, lure, and then eventually sex traffic kids. The most dangerous place for a child is not a dark alley at 3am, but on a smart phone in their bedroom at night without vigilant parents. Elizabeth "Biz" is one of my favorite zoomers on the planet. She's hilariously honest, loving and real -- she works at Starbucks, loves her tattoos and Baby Yoda doll, and is a self-described TikTok addict. She grew up in the affluent Daybreak community, a place where every family seems perfect. But Biz's childhood was far from perfect, which led to some major heartaches no child should have to go through. (This is a story of how NOT to handle a divorce for sake of your kids.) After her parents divorce, she was molested by step siblings, and then exposed to porn all before age 9, and by 8th grade she was pregnant. Faced with the fact that she was now forced to be an adult at 13, life threw decisions at her most people would not have to make til much older. Now 21, going through the same struggles so many GenZ'er go through as smartphone/social media guinea pigs, Biz is in a healthy and happy relationship and hoping her story can help parents see how important it is to be actively engaged in their kids' lives. And an amazing teen pregnancy story for anyone out there facing a decision whether to keep their baby or place for adoption.Listener Warning: this episode is for adults/parents only. This episode was recorded 2 months before Collin tragically passed away. May this interview reflect the light that he embodied. Collin you are dearly missed. Rest In Peace Collin Kartchner. ———————————————————————————————————The statistics are out regarding the dangers of TikTok and social media on our youth. It's no longer speculation, the numbers are staggering! So what can we do about it now that the match is already lit? In this episode, we discuss WHY it's so harmful for our children's self esteem and emotional well being, the nature of this unprecedented phenomenon (which our generation didn't grow up with), and expose where the sexual predators lurk. ——————————————————— If you own a smartphone or an iPad (which is probably 100% of you), this episode is a MUST-LISTEN.
Smith is what I think ever parent hopes their 16yr-old boy can be at this age. He is the happiest, smiliest, nicest person full of light and energy and joy--it's infectious. You cannot be around him and not feel better about life. He loves his parents, his sisters are his best friends, he fixes up cars with his dad and plays lacrosse. But it wasn't always this way for Smith. At 9 years old on an iPad his parents thought was locked down, Smith found pornography, and quickly became hooked. It took over his childhood, it hurt his self-esteem, it changed his attitude towards his family and life. Porn became his dark secret and took over his tween and early teen years, until at 14 the best thing happened to him: "I got caught." It was then that the healing could begin, and now just 2 years later, Smith is who he was born to be. Listen as we talk about his story, how he was able to kick this struggle so many teenagers struggle with today, and how Smith now goes to homes and shares his story as a presentation to families--afterwards he even walks parents through how to set up the best parental controls to keep your kids safe on their devices. I thought his presentation was so great, I had him come by the studio last week to film it, which we will be making available to parents everywhere soon. If you live in Utah/Davis/SL counties, you can have Smith come to your home and share his presentation with your family, then sit side by side and teach you how to lock down their devices to protect them from all the bad stuff the internet is anxious to get into your kids' faces. Too many kids today are fighting the billion dollar porn industry all on their own, and it's time to empower kids to fight this battle. But it all starts with good parenting. Collin Kartchner is a social activist and champion of giving childhood back to our children. The research is coming in fast about the giant social experiment of putting the pocket-sized computers into the hands of young children and teens, and the results are…alarming, to say the least. Collin helps us to understand the direness of the situation concerning kids and their internet consumption, specifically social media and online gaming. These platforms are designed specifically to give our minds dopamine hits providing the false sense of connection that kids are craving. He will truly inspire you to make a difference in your child’s life (and model freedom from screen dependence yourself! You can learn more about Collin’s work on his instagram page. My guest today is Michelle Pine, an occupational therapist who works with kids age 1-5. She and her entire community of OT's have seen alarming trends in kids struggling, and screen-time is one of the leading culprits. Verbal delays, cognitive delays, emotional delays, all of these have been rising at rates that should sound alarms. We discuss what is happening from little kids being in constant states of overstimulation (yes, even ABC Mouse and "learning" games) and what is happening when kids are being raised by iPads. Did you know there's a new-ish term in their field called "Virtual Autism"?There's a reason why Steve Jobs, inventor of the iPad, would not let his own children use iPads. Same reason why so many Silicon Valley tech executives send their children to no-tech, screen-free schools. The people who make these devices know the damage they're causing. Hooray for personal ethics :(If you're a parent with young kids this is a must listen. If you're planning on having kids one day, listen up. If you're a teenager who will have kids in the future, learn now and save your kids from this mess. Today's episode I had mom Tiffany and her high school son Ethan in the studio-- Tiffany is a teen therapist and Ethan recent high school grad. We talk about raising teenagers in today's world from mom/therapist's side as well as son/Ethan's side. Such a great dialogue about creating real connections with your teenagers, what it's like to be a teenage boy today, and how to build strong men. As Francis Douglas said, "It's easier to build strong children than to repair broken men."Check out Tiffany's therapy IG @tiffanytrumptherapy.coachingIf you want to keep your kids safe and save their childhood from being stolen from a smart phone, get your kid a Gabb Phone click HERE for pre-loaded discount. 2020 Global Child Prodigy Award recipient Tyler Gordon has an amazing story, from being born deaf to the amazing surgery that restored his hearing, tips on dealing with bullies and the unbelievable story of his first attempt at painting. It's all right here in the very first episode of The Gabb Cast with Collin Kartchner.
Few weeks ago, I got a message from this awesome, recently graduated 18yr-old high schooler named Jack. He told me his story, which is something happening to pretty much every high schooler/teenager today regarding social media/gaming/etc., and how he had an INCREDIBLE awakening. He now travels the country speaking to youth groups and schools about how as a young teen he got hooked to technology and screens, how he broke the trance, and how need to fix the internet for the sake of the kids. In 2020 Jack was named a US Presidential Scholar, the highest academic honor bestowed by the US Secretary of Education. He recently started an organization called "Detach Now" and just authored his first book entitled "Acquired Connection". Did I mention...he's EIGHTEEN. One of the most smart, well-spoken teenagers I have come across, Jack and I talk about some fun & seriously eye-opening stuff. This dude is like a young Jaron Lanier/Tristan Harris/Socrates. You can follow his work and/or donate to his cause (or donate a car) at www.DetachNow.com and while you are at it, go get a copy of his book HERE. Intermittent Fasting (0:00:00) Do the numbers 16:8 mean anything to you? If so, you probably know about intermittent fasting, a health trend that has been gaining traction over the last few years. While some endorse it as a great way to lose weight and increase growth hormones, others are a bit more skeptical about its health benefits. Just like with anything health related, it's good to get a professional's opinion before you take the leap into a new health pattern. So, we invited Liz Weinandy, a registered and licensed dietician nutritionist at Ohio State University, on the show today to speak about the pros and cons of intermittent fasting. Quarantine Kids Got Talent (0:18:01) 2 seasons. Hundreds of Submissions. Collin could have never imagined his quarantine talent show would get so much publicity and interaction. Collin Kartchner is a social media activist public speaker, and founder of the organization hashtag Save the Kids. He can usually be found in public schools, educating children of all ages about the dangers and benefits of social media. But with complete shutdown of schools across the country, he decided to use his time hosting and judging Quarantine Kids Got Talent on Instagram. Here to tell us all about it is Collin Kartchner! Turn Down the Noise and Stress (0:37:32) I enjoy, in fact I need, my quiet time. It's rejuvenating and it provides an escape from our noisy world. Modern life is full of sounds... including but not limited to the constant buzz of our phones, the hum of the TV, and chattering kids. It's not easy to turn off all of this noise, because it's characteristic of our ever-moving lives. But have you ever considered how much stress and health problems these unwanted sounds might cause? Florence Williams has definitely thought about this. She's an author and journalist that researched the negative impacts of noise and what people are doing to combat this invisible pollution. Handling Teen Drama (0:50:36) Sometimes when our kids get into drama, whether it's a fight with friends or a teacher giving them a bad grade, it can be a parent's instinct to get involved. We want to defend our kids, of course! But sometimes that can just make things worse. So, how can we help our kids through drama without getting wrapped up in it ourselves? Here to share her advice with us is Lisa Damour—child psychologist and author. Tapping (1:10:32) One of our favorite things is receiving topic suggestions from our listeners. We want to know what you're curious about and ask the questions that will help you get the answers you need. Recently, one of our listeners sent us an email about tapping, and I don't mean tap dancing. Tapping is a counseling technique that some people use to help them reduce anxiety, stress, PTSD, and depression. We know a lot of people struggle with issues like these, so we want to find out more about this unique form of intervention, how it works, and what the benefits are. We've invited Dawson Church, an expert on Emotional Freedom Techniques with a special emphasis on tapping, onto the show to tell us more about this. Weekend Review (1:26:59) Lisa and Richie talk about what there is to do this weekend while we're all stuck at home, from the newest shows coming to streaming services to the New York Times Bestsellers List.
The Tech Talk (0:00:00) With children getting smart phones at such young ages, it's important that we're conscious of how they're using them and who they're talking to. Too many kids have been taken advantage of by strangers on the internet with bad intentions. Now you might getsome push-back from your children when you try to monitor their phones and other devices. Most all kids will fight you for their privacy. But our next guest, who has spent many years focused on cyber-crimes among youth and taking down online child predators, believes it's important that parents stay involved when it comes to technology. Rich Wistocki is a former cyber-crimes detective with his own consulting firm dedicated to educating parents and kids on this topic. Online Recommendations (0:18:47) In today's world, we hardly go anywhere without recommendations. Everything we do is dependent on a few star-ratings and a well-written review. Luckily, we can access people's opinions easily online. Even Facebook set up a way for us to ask for recommendations from friends on its platform. But reviews are not only critical to consumers. They also have a big impact on businesses and job seekers. Today we're joined by Justin “job coach” Jones, a career development manager. He's here to share his insights into the world of recommendations and reviews and how it has changed the way people make decisions, find jobs, and run businesses. Teen Crime: False Confessions (0:36:06) You're sitting at the dinner table, about to eat, when the doorbell rings. There are two police officers at the door ready to handcuff your child. You go to the police station and when they finally tell you what's going on, you find out your child confessed to everything they were accused of. You get a moment with your child and ask them what happened. They look back at you and say that they didn't do anything; the police just got into their head. This exact situation happens more often than you'd think. Why do people, especially minors, confess to crimes they did not commit? Here to explain this to us is Lindsay Malloy, a forensic developmental psychologist and professor at Ontario Tech University. Deciding Your Child's Allowance (0:50:41) You've done a great job as a parent so far. Your child can walk, talk, and read. They successfully graduated to big kid underwear. Now it's time to take a leap and teach them something most adults don't know how to do—manage money. And one of the best ways to teach your children about money management is through an allowance. There's a lot of debate surrounding the best approach to implementing an allowance, so here to break it down for us and give us some advice is Liz Frazier, a Financial Planner and author of “Beyond Piggy Banks and Lemonade Stands: How to Teach Young Kids About Finance”. Stay Bothered (1:08:05) Many of us are itching with a desire to make a difference in the lives around us... but helping others can be demanding work. And once we get started, finding the motivation to stay involved in our community is difficult. Yet, it's also so rewarding... so how can we maintain our involvement in causes that are important to us with the same hope and energy we started with? Today we are talking with philanthropist and friend of the show Jamie Amelio as she talks with us about staying bothered and how we can continue to drive change in the world. Fighting Phone Addiction with Flip Phones (1:24:28) As parents, we often complain about how our kids are addicted to their mobile devices. But I think sometimes we too are guilty of staring at screens for too long. Our time-consuming cell phone and social media use could be even more damaging to home and family life than our children's obsession with Kim Kardashian's Instagram story. Collin Kartchner, a social media activist and founder of hashtag save the kids, says that maybe we should exchange our iPhones for flip phones. He joins us today.
