That quiet voice urging us toward purpose beyond ourselves—toward becoming maternal presences in a world desperately needing wisdom, nurturing, and light. In this soul-stirring conversation, Leslie Means (founder of Her View From Home and author of "So God Made a Grandma") joins Janell to unpack what happens when women fully embrace their capacity to nurture those in their spheres of influence. Leslie's journey from Nebraska farm girl to creator of a platform reaching millions of women reveals the mysterious way divine whispers guide us when we're brave enough to listen."I just felt something else," Leslie shares, recounting the moment she left her broadcast journalism career despite its outward success. Through financial uncertainty, a third pregnancy, and moments of questioning, she followed what she describes as a "gut feeling"—that internal knowing that something more awaited. What emerged was a platform where thousands of women's stories have found a home, including one that literally saved a reader's life. The conversation takes a powerful turn when Leslie emotionally acknowledges what grounds her work: "I know that God loves me...if it all fails and goes away, I will be okay." This foundation of secure attachment—something Janell notes many women never experienced in their formative years—becomes the launching pad for authentic service rather than validation-seeking.Whether you're a grandmother, mother, or woman seeking to understand your unique influence, this episode illuminates the extraordinary impact of maternal presence. Through stories of intergenerational influence, Holocaust survival accounts preserved through storytelling, and research confirming women's unique role in family systems, a compelling invitation emerges: What would happen if women fully grasped their value and stepped confidently into their calling? As Janell powerfully concludes, "Watch out when women grasp that truth that they're loved, because a remarkable revolution will happen in all the right ways."Visit Leslie's community home: Her View From HomeOrder Leslie's books: So God Made a Mother and So God Made a GrandmotherSo proud to be in Feedspot's Top 100 Mental Health Podcasts: https://podcast.feedspot.com/mSupport the showBegin Your Heartlifter's Journey: Visit and subscribe to Heartlift Central on Substack. This week the gang is all together in the studio to find the worst podcasts in the mental health category. I brought a show called “Terrible, Thanks For Asking” that pretty much just explains it's okay to be miserable all the time. Great advice. Lucy brought “Am I A Bad Therapist?” where people who have no business trying to help others pat themselves on the back. Finally, Andy came in with another whiny woman, this time it was Trisha Paytus. Please don't reward him for that. She's the worst! After the competition, our Cringe of the Week reminds us that Mom Swipes Left is hosted by two very gross women. Also, the song parody contest is ramping up with some amazing submissions. Then Cardiff joins the show to discuss one of John's most pathetic episodes ever. He continued to lie over and over and even swore on his life as he was getting called out. And finally, the return of To Poke A Dabbler, reviews with Annie, and your voicemails. https://www.youtube.com/@OnceOverwithCayley https://www.instagram.com/allapologiespodcast https://www.patreon.com/cardiffelectric Support us, get bonus episodes, Vic and Hannah pics, and watch live every Saturday and most Wednesdays: http://bit.ly/watp-patreon https://watp.supercast.tech/ Visit magicmind.co/watp and use promo code watp for 20% off your purchase or up to 50% off a subscription! According to Edison Research, there are more podcast listeners than ever, with 64% of the US 12+ population having ever listened to a podcast. With over half a million active podcasts available, more time is being devoted to mental health discussions. However, little is known about the motivation and experiences of people listening to mental health related material in podcasts. Joining us today are Dr. Sharon Lambert and Naoise Ó Caoilte from University College Cork in Ireland, who have studied the motivations and experiences of mental health-related podcast listeners. Their recent paper is entitled "Podcasts as a Tool for Enhancing Mental Health Literacy: An Investigation of Mental Health-Related Podcasts," and it appears in the journal Mental Health & Prevention. In this interview, we discuss the importance of mental health literacy and ask if the need for honest mental health experiences is being met from the recording studio rather than the consulting room. *** Mad in America podcasts and reports are made possible, in part, by a grant from the Thomas Jobe Fund. When was the last time you did something "childlike?" Not "childish," but "childlike?" In Matthew 18:2-4 (VOICE), Jesus shares, "This is the truth: unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven. In that kingdom, the most humble who are most like this child are the greatest." To help us reframe, redraw, and reauthor our picture of God, we have Lacy Finn Borgo, author, and spiritual director, to guide us. In her new books, "All Will Be Well: Learning to Trust God," and "Faith Like a Child: Embracing Our Lives as Children of God," Lacy invites us to consider our picture of God in stunningly beautiful ways. Poet David Whyte defines regret as "a short, evocative, and achingly beautiful word; an elegy to lost possibilities even in its brief annunciation...Sincere regret may in fact be a faculty for paying attention to the future, for sensing a new tide where we missed a previous one, for experiencing timelessness with a grandchild where we neglected a boy of our own. To regret fully is to appreciate how high the stakes are in even the average human life. Fully experienced, regret turns our eyes, attentive and alert to a future possibly lived better than our past." Teaching Pastor Alli Patterson, author of "How to Stay Standing: 3 Essential Practices for Building a Faith that Lasts," shares about a time in her young married life when she made a mistake. In her candor and disarming honesty, she shares her story in hopes of helping each of build a faith that will stand strong during the tests and trials of this life. How do you handle the rejections that Life brings? In Part 1 of my conversation with Jessica Van Roekel, author of "Reframing Rejection: How Looking Through a Different Lens Changes Everything," Jessica guides us through the four types of rejection: Perceived Rejection, Actual Rejection, Unintentional Rejection, and Intentional Rejection (ouch). In Part 2, she shares lessons from her life as a photographer and how "looking through a different lens changes everything." She shares the following: As a photographer, I get to choose what's in the frame. You might see a beautiful blade of grass with dew drops, but I know that just outside the blade of grass, is a pile of manure. We have a choice. What do we choose to see? Happy International Women's Day. A day set apart to celebrate the gift of being a woman. In Part 2 of Janell and Lisa's conversation, they touch on questions like, "Have you ever felt, 'I just don't measure up? I'm not really important. What I do doesn't matter.'" Meet two women who both can answer yes to those questions. One is an introverted, "quietly unconventional," soul, and the other, an extroverted introvert (ambivert), anything but "quiet" or "conventional," yet, both share similar needs to feel at home in their bodies. Both feel an innate need to be seen and heard, yet they go about it in different ways. We serve a remarkable God who "remarks," again and again, blessings in our lives. Day after day, He sends forth blessings, yet we often develop spiritual amnesia and become dull, numb, or even blind to them. It is HIS nature to bless His children with "good and perfect gifts" (James 1:17). The question is: Do we stop and notice these blessings? In his new book, "The Lord Bless You," Pastor Terry A. Smith, invites us to recapture God's heart for blessing His children. From Genesis to Revelation, the Bible makes it clear that our God has a zealous intent to bless us. Join Matthew and Elizabeth for the season three finale of “Heart of the Matter,” as they discuss his addiction journey, how his “Friends” co-stars supported him during his darkest days and what advice he'd give to those with addiction.Explore more on topics and themes discussed in this episode:Frequent Questions & Common Misconceptions About Underage DrinkingWhen Your Child Sees Substance Use as an Answer, Not a ProblemSuggesting Treatment to a Loved OneEditor's Note: The views and opinions expressed on Heart of the Matter are those of the podcast participants and do not necessarily reflect the official policy or position of Partnership to End Addiction. Tommy Davidson's childhood was anything but textbook. Discovered on the streets as a toddler by his adoptive white mother, he faced alienation from those who looked down on his interracial upbringing, and strife from a society clinging to racial barriers. But a breakout role on the now-iconic ‘90s sitcom “In Living Color” soon thrust him into fame—and into the throes of addiction. Tune into the latest episode of Heart of the Matter as Tommy, now over two decades into recovery, speaks to Elizabeth Vargas about finding a sense of belonging in his unique upbringing, getting to “live two lives” with recovery and why he thinks substance use seems so prominent in the entertainment industry. He recently told his remarkable journey of triumph in the face of trauma in his book “Dear William: A Father's Memoir of Addiction, Recovery, Love, and Loss.” A few years ago, David lost his son William to an accidental overdose just one year after his other son Hudson was in a three-day coma following his own overdose. At the same time, his daughter Mary was struggling with an eating disorder, and David himself was in recovery from an alcohol and substance use disorder. But before he passed away, William encouraged David to write about their family's struggles to let others know they are not alone. With his wife's blessing, David published this book, which gives readers an open and honest glimpse into the Magee family's story. In the latest episode of Heart of the Matter, David sits down with Elizabeth Vargas to discuss how recovery isn't linear and is in fact a journey; the insight he'd give to parents whose children are struggling with addiction and mental health challenges; and how David is helping other families locally in Mississippi.Content warning: This episode contains mentions of death, as well as in-depth discussions of substance use.
