In today's episode, we're talking about Abundance and how the proverbial glass is always refillable. When you believe there are a finite number of resources and a pie in the sky to be divided, you start to compete and deny yourself the abundance our world has to offer. You can't be poor enough to make someone rich, or sick enough to make someone well. It's time to recognize, and allow ourselves to receive all the success and abundance we desire. We can do more than one thing well at a time. The famous glass of water is not half full or half empty, it is (always) refillable. Happy Holidays ! Enjoy this best of replay of my discussion with Colleen Jorgensen about how we interpret chronic pain science.Welcome back to the work in everyone. There are so many frustrating things about health and wellness information. As fitness professionals and coaches we watch for the latest information in science and do our best to curate and explain it to our clients and students. As consumers of that information, it can be so confusing to try to understand what the latest science actually means for our day to day lives, and for a topic as complex as chronic pain, that becomes even more challenging. On the one hand, it's great to get new science, new understanding about the body and the nervous system so we can make the best choices in our care. On the other hand, what does that mean for everything that we knew before? does it all go out the window? How do we how do we integrate that new understanding of pain care science in meaningful ways, and share it when it comes to posture, alignment and movement therapy? My friend Colleen Jorgensen reached out to me a few weeks ago with this question as a topic for the podcast. And I thought it was a really great idea. I love bringing clarity to topics like this and I always learned so much from Colleen. She's been on the podcast before. We've talked about chronic pain, the nervous system pain care where language and the importance of professional communication skills. She's an osteopath, the yoga Pilates instructor and a teacher trainer was specialties in pain care where language among many other skills and she is the one I trust to help translate some of this new information. I am thrilled to have Colleen back on the podcast to talk more about this topic. And I think in the course of the conversation, we can find new ways to evaluate other areas of health and wellness science as well. So let's start our work. In with Colleen Jorgensen. Welcome back Colleen. It's time to stop working out and start working IN. You found the Work IN podcast for fit-preneurs and their health conscious clients. Part of being a trauma informed fit pro is understanding that we are really teaching our clients to be trauma informed for themselves. Helping them build their awareness So THEY can get the results they want for themselves. After all They are the ones who have to do the work. That can't happen if we overwhelm them right out of the gate. And it really can't happen if we ourselves don't have an integrated self regulation practice to share. So let's get right to our Work IN today with Nate Sleger. It's time to stop working out and start working IN. In today's society, we are all about the hustle. We are told over and over that in order to achieve success, we have to hustle day and night. While this may be true in some instances, it's not always the case. The truth is that overwhelm and overachievement are not requirements for business success. Erin Harrigan is a Christian wife, mom, and speaker/coach who helps women tune out the world, tune into God's truth and turn up focus to redefine hustle and pursue success God's way. The first step in doing this is getting clear on what your values are in your business and in your life and then growing your business with clarity, consistency, and commitment. Balance is a verb and this is how you can succeed without sacrificing your priorities. I know you're going to love this conversation with Erin, so tune in! If you're trying to reduce your dog's barking recognizing what your dog is telling you is the first step. I'll explain the sound that means your dog is feeling excited. Listen as Camilla Gray-Nelson, author of Lipstick and the Leash: Dog Training a Woman's Way, explains the answer and tells women how to get control back. Today's guest is content creator all-star Nicholas Cole. Nicolas (aka Cole) is cofounder of Digital Press — a business that helps companies position their founders and CEOs as thought leaders through written content. Cole's background is a bit unusual. As a teenager, he was a top-ranked “World of Warcraft” player. As he got older, he moved into body building before finally landing in his career as a writer. Through his growth as a writer, he launched Digital Press. Today, Digital Press has an entire staff of copywriters and editors working to present CEOs and Founders as thought leaders in their given niches. In this episode, Cole gives us some tips on content creation, finding your voice, and building loyalty for your content. “I treat content the same way that I would approach investing: it's not the day trade method, it's the Warren Buffett method. Invest in something that's going to be sustainable over the long term.” In this episode Nicolas talks about: How to make content that engages with your audience and keeps them invested in you. How to find your voice as a writer. How getting feedback is critical in figuring out how and what you content you create. Main Takeaways The more you can connect with an audience on a personal level, the more interested they will be in the content you're creating. You cannot find your voice unless you are actively speaking. You have to quantify how you will be better than those around you. Pay attention to what others in our sphere of influence are doing and then pivot to find a way to stand out. Look at the content you are creating as an investment in a library and as a way to build loyalty, instead of chasing viral content. In today's episode, I talk with Giselle Field. Giselle is a one-woman branding and design company. She loves to travel, and uses her travels as inspiration for her work. Giselle started college as an art major, but realized it wasn't for her. She quickly stumbled upon a graphic design class and has never looked back. After college, she had a hard time finding full-time design work, and this pushed her to pursue freelancing and build her skills as an entrepreneur. Overcoming fear and getting out of her comfort zone were crucial in getting Giselle to where she is today. Diving into freelancing full-time can be a scary scenario, especially if it's not something you're choosing. But Giselle realized she had to find ways to move out of her comfort zone in order to move forward personally and professionally. Along the way, her now husband introduced her to rock climbing, which was helped her carry her confidence into the business world. The sport has taught her a lot about fear and perseverance, and has helped her overcome similar challenges in her career. “You just have to put yourself out there, get out of your comfort zone, and think, what's the worst that can happen?” In this episode Giselle talks about: Her journey to freelancing and entrepreneurship The fears she faced along the way and what strategies she used to overcome them Advice and tips for freelancers who are starting out and what they can do to be successful How calculated risk is important for getting ahead in the freelancing world and how to get comfortable with taking risks Main Takeaways Calculated risk is the best way to expose yourself to different things and grow as a freelancer. Fear is holding you back from moving to the next level, but you can overcome it. You won't get to where you want to be if you keep waiting for everything to be perfect, or if you stop learning about your industry. Links Wander Design Co. We discuss some current events, then welcome back our highest rated episode from WAY back in Week 12 - John Wiseman. John is definitely one of the busiest, most effective, and most "storied" characters in this amazing industry. Hear him for the first time - or listen again - and you'll enjoy it as much as I did the second time around!
This week we're running some of our most popular episodes. Enjoy! If you're anything like me, you're a perfectionist. This is great in a lot of ways and can really help your business grow, but sometimes you need to throw caution to the wind and stop being a perfectionist and people pleaser. In this episode, we're going to talk about five ways you can stop being a perfectionist and why it matters. Carve out some time to listen to this episode even if you have work to do because you need to hear it! “We can ditch the idea of being a perfectionist and get better. We should strive to be imperfect.” In this episode Avani talks about: Why you should learn to put yourself first in a non-selfish way. How she learned to deal with letting people down. How focusing on yourself sometimes can benefit others. Five Ways to Stop Being a Perfectionist 1. Don't feel bad about letting people down. You can't hold yourself responsible for other people's actions or feelings. If you say no to a client, you don't need to feel bad that they have to find someone else. You are going to let some people down and you need to be ok with that. 2. Do the bare minimum. If you're an over achiever, sometimes it's ok to take the easy route and do the bare minimum. I guarantee no one will notice. It's a great way to eliminate some of your stress. 3. Allow people to be nice to you. Everyone is human. Your clients will understand if you need a break, you're sick, or if you're on vacation. Give them the opportunity to accommodate your “you time”. They will understand. 4. Slow down and take breaks. It's ok to take a long lunch. It's ok to not work 40 hours a week. It's ok to breathe! Make sure that you are taking some time and not working yourself to death. 5. Take a vacation. Vacation is important. It's a great way to recharge and your clients will understand that you're out of the office. You don't need to punish yourself to please them, so get out there and take a trip! This week we're running some of our most popular episodes. Enjoy! Today's guest is Ashlee Hightower. Ashlee is an attorney for creatives and the owner of Contracts for Creatives as well as Cobalt Chronicles. In this episode, she talks about what we're missing in our contracts as freelancers, as well as what we need to do to protect ourselves, protect our businesses, and make sure we're getting the most out of our contracts. Ashlee began her career as an attorney working at a large, national law firm. After a few years, she moved into the corporate world (freeing up a lot of her time) and began reading local blogs to find out about things going on in her city, Washington D.C. Intrigued by the idea of a blog, Ashlee started her own travel and wellness blog. This foray into the creative world allowed Ashlee to connect with more creatives in the D.C. area. She soon realized that many of them were having trouble with contracts, or were afraid of them, because they seemed to complicate the creative process. As people began to come to her with questions about contracts, word got out and her new business, Contracts for Creatives, was born. This episode is crucial. It's one of those things you don't want to mess around with in your freelance business and that's why I brought Ashlee onto the show. She has all the education, the background, the knowledge to give us the right advice to create the best contracts we can. “In the creative space, it's very important that the intellectual property rights are outlined thoroughly in your contract and that you're aware of what rights you're giving away to a client.” In this episode Ashlee talks about: Her background in law and how she ended up in the creative space What a contract is in its most basic form and the biggest mistakes creatives are making in their contracts How freelancers can keep themselves safe through their contracts Main Takeaways A contract is just a simple document outlining the collaboration between two parties. Make sure every detail, especially payment plans, are in your contract and that there is no confusion on what you'll be delivering and how and when you will get paid. Be very specific about details in your contract and make sure that you give yourself a way out. Expect red lines (changes) to the contracts that you send over to your clients. It's a normal process and can actually benefit you. Pick your battles and decide if it the changes are worth potentially losing a client. This week we're running some of our most popular episodes. Enjoy! In this episode, we're talking about one of my favorite things on the planet: Instagram. More specifically, Instagram Stories. I was checking my numbers and I realized that in the last 12 months alone I have had $35,000 of work come in just through Instagram stories. That is a crazy amount of money! I truly believe that stories are the most valuable part of the whole Instagram platform. Today, I wanted to talk about exactly how that's working for me, what I do in order to create relationships with people through Instagram Stories, and how you can play the long game on Instagram. Instagram doesn't have to work the same for each and every person. It depends on who you are and what you like and what you're hoping to accomplish with your business and the platform itself. This is just what has worked for me. “Clients or prospects feel like they know you and they like you because they keep watching you and they want to work with you somehow. So when you show them ‘hey, this is what I do on Instagram Stories' and show behind the scenes, they're going to be wowed.” Using IG stories to land clients 1. Show up every single day. Consistency is key. It doesn't matter if you have great content or not, it could be something basic or simple. Just make sure that you are posting something that your audience can engage with. 2. Document, don't create. Anything interesting that you experience in your day-to-day you should document. You don't need to make something super interesting, just capture what's going on in your every day life. 3. Show up on video. Videos with sound have very high rates of engagement on IG Stories. So it's important to show up on video, with sound, with your face at least a couple of times a week. And remember that analytics are important and you should be checking them. 4. Show off your brand. Your brand is who you are. You need to live it and show it off on Stories if you want to keep engagement up. People are interested in the little personal things that make you your brand. Make sure to show off bits of your day that make you, you! 5. Encourage engagement. Instagram has a lot of ways to get people engaged. Whether its polls or sliders or anything else they have, use these so that people will interact with your content. Post these frequently so that you stay at the top of people's minds. 6. Respond to people who interact with you. Don't just let comments and messages fall by the wayside. Respond. It's not hard to explore people's profiles and find out a little bit about them and craft a meaningful response to something they said. This is how new clients are made. This week we're running some of our most popular episodes. Enjoy! We've all had coffee meetings where we sit down with someone just to “pick your brain”. Today, we're talking about why those meetings are actually super important, and how you can maximize your ROI from a simple get-together. We'll dive into some strategies to help you make sure your meetings have a purpose, and both parties get value. While these meetings are important, you want to make sure that no one leaves feeling like it was a waste of time or that it was all give and no take. These meetings should be mutually beneficial. It is totally possible to make these kinds of meetings mutually beneficial and valuable for your business. “Prepare ahead of time and go into this meeting with a list of questions and ideas that you want to discuss and talk about. You should be going into that meeting knowing exactly what to say and how to say it confidently.” 1. Know your purpose Why are you asking this person to meet? You need to know exactly what you want to walk away with, and it's important to begin with the end in mind because you don't want to waste your time or theirs. 2. Prepare ahead of time Go into this meeting with a list of questions and ideas that you want to discuss and talk about. Don't get caught saying, “um”, and “uh”, when you're in front of someone that you're asking for advice. You should be going into the meeting knowing exactly what to say and how to say it confidently. 3. Lead the meeting You called the meeting, you lead the meeting. This will come naturally if you prepare ahead of time, but don't make it feel like the person you're asking advice from needs to keep the conversation going. Lead the meeting confidently so you get what you want out of it. 4. Ask intelligent questions If you're prepared, go back over your questions and make sure that they're intelligent. These questions need to be crafted so that you can extract as much information in as little time as necessary. No one likes to sit around and talk about the weather. 5. Be mindful of the time This person took time out of their busy schedule to talk to you for a set amount of time. Don't make them feel like they are the ones that need to wrap up the meeting because you're talking so much. Have a plan to end the meeting so they don't feel like they have to. 6. Say thank you A “thank you” goes a long way. I recommend thanking them on the spot, and then sending a follow-up email thanking them for taking time to meet with you. They're giving you the gift of information, and that's worth saying thanks for. This will give you the bonus of being remembered by that person in the future. Welcome to Champions Of Mind - the podcast bought to you from the UK's most in-demand coaches Rhys and Llewellyn Davies alongside host James Burtt. Each week the boys bring you the tactics, mindset and actionable tips that have helped them become some of the most successful coaches, mentors, businessmen, public figures, elite athletes and Motivational Speakers in the country. This week in this Best Of Replay show we dive in deep about mindset and what it actually takes to have a mentality to win, consistently. As always Rhys and Llewy explain their thoughts and feelings on the subject from the perspective of people who have won (and won big) in multiple fields, so they have a unique view point on what the attainment of success is actually all about. In the show we discuss: * The fact that Mindset is the ultimate form of self-awareness * Mindset is a learnable and trainable skill * People need to focus on a ’Just be you’ attitude to increase self-awareness * Application will change mindset, application creates transferable skills * Life is competitive - sustainable competition is what creates the long term wins * Regardless of where you start your Mindset is trainable * Everyone learns and grows but most don’t even realise it is happening - become aware, take control * The first step to improving yourself is taking ownership of your mindset and much, much more. We also touch on the very interesting subject of how hardships can help increase mindset resilience; while this is widely accepted common knowledge how can you reach for peak success if you’ve had no hardships? Simply put, if you’ve not had struggles you need to re-create them in a controlled environment. And there is motivational gold all the way to the end of thew show, in the last 2 mins Llewy D shares a Top Tip about writing down 4 character traits you need to succeed and ‘act as if’ for 8 weeks and see what happens… this exercise alone will create insane results. As always; no nonsense, tangible and actionable tips delivered with passion and this week we really get a deep insight as to what it really takes to create a serious level of success. Today’s question: Today’s question comes from Ken. As a technical founder, where do you start with marketing and sales? Should you go out and find a marketing focused co-founder? Jake’s answer: As a technical founder it can be frustrating having a product that’s fully built yet still sitting idle because you don’t know where to begin with marketing. But that doesn’t necessarily mean you have to bring on a non-technical co-founder to do marketing. Whether you are ready to bring on a co-founder or not, here are some tactics to get you started: 1) Use your preliminary product research as as starting point Validating the market for your product is a type of marketing and is essential before you set out to build a product. Use the information you gathered before making your product to help you get started with your post-product marketing efforts. If you do need a non-technical co-founder, you won’t have trouble finding one. It’s usually the opposite way, when non-technical founders need a technical co-founder who can execute their vision. 2) Evaluate your potential co-founders You need to have enough self-awareness to know what you are good at and what you aren’t good at. Your co-founder should have a complementary skill set that fills in the gaps for your weaknesses. One of the clear gaps you are trying to fill is in sales and marketing, but you also have to think about the other gaps you are filling. Just because you get along well with someone doesn’t mean they’ll make a good co-founder - it’s actually the opposite in most cases. If you get along really well, chances are you are good at the same things, which won’t help move your business forward. Write down a list of all of the things you are really good at and those you aren’t good at and then look specifically to fill those gaps with your co-founder. 3) Search your Network Comb through all of your existing networks to find someone who might make a good co-founder. You can start on LinkedIn and work through your other social networks, email lists, friends and family, etc, to see who might be a good match. Don’t rule people out because they have a job or are working on their own thing. You don’t know what they may be open to until you ask. Remember, the relationship with your co-founder will be for the next 7-10 years (if you intend to be around for a while) so choose wisely. Don’t move too quickly to bring on a co-founder, do your research and focus on filling your skills gaps rather than bringing on a friend or someone you get along with well. Today’s question: Today’s question comes from Eric and deals with market research. Specifically, what’s the most effective way to do market research before launching your company? Jake’s answer: Market research can be a real pain because a lot of founders don’t know what goal they’re trying to achieve when they’re doing the market research. There are a lot of biases. The first step of market research is your own network (e.g. friends, family, peers, etc.). But you get the most value when get out of your own network. And one of the best ways to do that is to look up the testimonials or ratings and reviews of your competitors. Look at your competitor’s Facebook pages, Product Hunt, Google pages, etc. and ask yourself why people love this company and why they hate this company? When I did this for Launchpeer, I learned that people really loved the smooth on-boarding process and that they could get a price right there on the website. Or, at least that they didn’t have to go through a bunch of hoops to get a quote. So we took that to heart and changed our entire sales process to incorporate those elements. Conversely, one of the things people hated about our competitors were slow response times to in-website chats. So we made it a priority to respond quickly. These are the kinds of things I wish I had done before I started the company. And I strongly recommend you take the time to do them. This type of market research can be done in 15-20 minutes and it’s well worth it. Financial research For most industries, it’s very easy with Google to do some quick searching and find out a lot about a particular market (e.g. demographics, how much people spend, where they buy, what social groups they belong to, etc.). Funding research How much is a startup worth? Some of the numbers aren’t as public, but there are places you can go, such as AngelList, to find out how much funding you’re competitor’s have raised, how much their startups are worth, etc. and thereby give yourself an idea of what you may be able to accomplish. MatterMark is another place that is a huge research repository of business data. That’s where we do a lot of research for our clients. Goals determine the method At the end of the day, it all comes down to your goal. If you’re trying to validate an idea, follow the steps above using sites like Facebook, Product Hunt of Google. If you’re trying to figure out what you should pitch to investors, that’s where AngelList and MatterMark are going to be useful. However, if you’re tying to find out which parts of your market you should work on penetrating, that’s one of the most difficult kinds of market research to do. If that’s the case, you’ll need a combination of the previous two methods, but you’ll also want to start talking to your actual customers or potential customers. That’s the best way to find out what you can offer. For example, entrepreneurs are made of many different types of people. So when we started surveying our customers, we got a huge variety of answers based on age and demographic. Because of that, it would have been really hard to get much value out of the methods mentioned above. So, if that’s your goal, you MUST talk to your customers. And if you don’t have customers yet, talk to potential customers. Surveying customers, or potential customers, is the difference between shooting an arrow with a blindfold or without one. Yes, it’s hard to talk to potential customers, but the best form of market research is talking to people one on one. And if you’re willing to do it, you’re giving yourself a massive heads-tart of all your competitors who aren’t doing it. Ask Your Own Question Got questions about startups and/or startup culture? Today’s question: Today’s question comes from Leroy. Leroy’s questions has to do with how to pitch a product that doesn’t exist yet. How can you pitch from just an idea without a product or prototype to back it up? Jake’s answer: Having a finished product to pitch can feel so much better to pitch than something that’s just a concept or prototype. But even though it may feel better, it’s because you feel like the grass is greener on the other side. But pitching without a product can actually be a much better situation for you. Flexibility + Feedback When I’m pitching a product that doesn’t exist yet, I have the ability to change my pitch, the product itself, or any other number of variables as I receive feedback from potential investors or customers. Even if they are telling me something I don’t want to hear, I can at least get that feedback early without having to go back and iterate on a final product. And honestly, you’ll get much more candid feedback when you pitch without a product because people know you are in a place to make changes - they won’t give you that type of feedback when you’ve put in a ton of time and money into creating the product. How to pitch without a finished product This actually depends quite a bit on who you are pitching to. The categories of potential people you are pitching to can include: Potential customers If the product is not what they need, then the conversation isn’t over if I don’t yet have a product. You can refine the product based on their feedback and the conversation can continue. Investors Pitching a finished product is easier to pitch to investors because you’ve shown them what you can do and you want them to fuel the engine not build it. If you don’t have the product, you have to have the same conversation about how much money you need to grow the company but you also have to convince them that the product is something that’s viable. Friends, Family, Partners For comfort, I’d rather have a finished product to pitch family and friends. As people who hear your ideas that you’re coming up with all of the time, you want to make sure you can show them that you believe in the idea and that it’s something you’re ready to make happen rather than just another idea that won’t go anywhere. Do what it takes Ideally, you’ll be able to put together a MVP before you go out and talk about your product, but the reality is that you need to do whatever necessary to just get started. Make sure your idea is something that you actually want to stick with (buy a domain, then sit on it for a few weeks to see if the idea still resonates strongly with you) and then start building it, ten blocks at a time. Today’s question: Today’s question is from Michael. My partner and I are in pre-development for an online app. We are doing some user feedback surveys and thought about doing a prototype of the game that people could play while providing feedback. Is there anything else we should be doing to get feedback at this time? Jake’s answer: Validation is hard because you have to talk to people. It’s too easy for founders to kind of hide away what they are working on because it keeps the idea safe - it’s hard to hear your idea may not be as good as you thought it was or to hear about changes, but it’s a critical step in the process. There are many communities of entrepreneurs out there where you can solicit feedback and people are used to it. You can use places like: Reddit Indie Hackers Product Hunt The one problem with these communities is that you aren’t talking to anyone. You can get a lot of information from surveys and other outreach, but you aren’t going to get the full depth or to the root of the feedback unless you make the time to talk to people. Building Prototypes A prototype is basically a visual representation of the application without any code. The benefits to a prototype include being able to hand it off to a developer and they know exactly what they need to build and it’s also great for getting user feedback. The prototype stage helps you solidify your idea and is your chance to document everything and gives you something to go out and show people. You get much more feedback when people have something visual to guide them. A prototype also enables you to have a successful development project. You work through many of the potential obstacles while you build it and when you are ready to hand it off you’re more likely to have a project that comes in on budget and on time. Today’s question: Today’s question comes from Thomas and he has question about technical outsourcing. I have a strong idea for an app but I’m torn between hiring a development company and bringing on a technical co-founder. What are the pros and cons of each? Jake’s answer: Benefits of a Technical Co-Founder The main benefit of having a technical co-founder is that they are your co-founder. They are in the trenches with you and you have a relationship with them. They will also have more interest in the success of the business since they own a portion of it and it will help you with fundraising if that’s the route you go. If you have support issues or have feature requests, it’s much easier to just ask your co-founder to do it than to have to rely on an agency or other third-party service. Downsides of a Technical Co-Founder Relationships can go south quickly. Terms and expectations often aren’t laid out clearly enough beforehand and that creates a lot of issues. You also lock someone in to being on the leadership team of your company. If they aren’t a good leader, then it’s going to be tough to keep them engaged as you grow. Additionally, your product is somewhat limited by the technical co-founder’s skill set. If you want to build something out of their area of expertise then you’ll have to go elsewhere anyway. Benefits of Outsourcing The main benefit is that you are getting more than one person. You get a development team in addition to QA people, designers, etc. If you work with a company like LaunchPeer, you get a team that’s worked with companies at all stages of company development. They have expertise that can meet your startup where it’s at. Downsides of Outsourcing Some agencies just aren’t very good. The terms aren’t beneficial, they don’t have the right skillset, and you potentially don’t own the code. You are also at the whims of their working hours. You can’t necessarily reach out 24 hours a day and get an immediate response. And sometimes communication can be sporadic and with little access to the development team. Working with an agency also comes at a fairly high cost. Depending on what you’re building, you’ll likely pay $10k-$150k up front. Whereas with a technical co-founder you could be giving them much more depending upon your equity terms. Check out our webinar on our resources page that goes into detail on this topic.
