Baldwin led a ferocious, five-hour cavalry and infantry assault against a Cheyenne camp at McClellan Creek, sending the encampment into chaos as warriors mounted a desperate rearguard defense. Amid the gunfire and smoke, soldiers shot a warrior just before he could kill seven-year-old captive Julia German, discovering her hiding beneath a buffalo robe while her five-year-old sister, Adelaide, was found unharmed in a nearby dry wash. Hardened troopers were moved to tears by the young sisters' emaciated, bruised state and bloodied feet, immediately wrapping the girls in heavy overcoats, feeding them rations, and placing them in the care of field surgeon Dr. Junius L. Powell.Dr. Powell escorted the rescued sisters north across the frontier—traveling by ambulance to Camp Supply, where officers' wives nursed their wounds, and onward by train via Fort Dodge to Fort Leavenworth. Arriving at the headquarters of General John Pope on December 1, 1874, the girls finally reached safety, only to have the tragic fate of their family confirmed. Driven by sheer survival instinct, seven-year-old Julia leads five-year-old Adelaide along wagon ruts to a deserted army camp on McClellan Creek. For nearly three weeks, the two girls endure freezing nights burrowed in leaves, scavenge on discarded hardtack, wild onions, and hackberries, and comfort each other as prowling wolf packs circle their makeshift shelter.Their solitary ordeal ends on November 7 when Grey Beard's fleeing Cheyenne band arrives at the creek, and women scoop up the emaciated, sore-covered children. That evening, their captive older sister Sophia spots them alive in the camp, though she is violently shoved away into the shadows before they can reunite. Lovers on the grass, silver horns at dawn, a rose leaf falling from an enormous height like a little parachute. It is one of the loveliest things Woolf ever wrote about how it feels when sound takes over from thought — when the fretting mind finally lets go and simply floats. Which makes it, we think, close to perfect for the last thing you hear tonight. There is no need to follow the story. There is no plot to lose. Audiobook Excerpt. Ann Coulter. Godless: The Church of Liberalism. Chapter One. "If a martian landed in America and set out to determine the nation's official state religion, he would have to conclude it is liberalism, while Christianity and Judaism are prohibited by law. Many Americans are outraged by liberal hostility to traditional religion. But as Ann Coulter reveals in this, her most explosive book yet, to focus solely on the Left's attacks on our Judeo-Christian tradition is to miss a larger point: liberalism is a religion—a godless one. And it is now entrenched as the state religion of this county. Though liberalism rejects the idea of God and reviles people of faith, it bears all the attributes of a religion. In Godless, Coulter throws open the doors of the Church of Liberalism, showing us its sacraments (abortion), its holy writ (Roe v. The Rape of Nanking. Audiobook Excerpt. Iris Chang (Author) In December 1937, in the capital of China, one of the most brutal massacres in the long annals of wartime barbarity occurred. The Japanese army swept into the ancient city of Nanking and within weeks not only looted and burned the defenseless city but systematically raped, tortured and murdered more than 300,000 Chinese civilians. Amazingly, the story of this atrocity- one of the worst in world history- continues to be denied by the Japanese government. The Rape of Nanking tells the story from three perspectives: that of the Japanese soldiers who performed it; of the Chinese civilians who endured it; and finally of a group of Europeans and Americans who refused to abandon the city and were able to create a safety zone that saved almost 300,000 Chinese.
