Hello to you listening in Ambler, Pennsylvania! Coming to you from Whidbey Island, Washington this is Stories From Women Who Walk with 60 Seconds for Motivate Your Monday and your host, Diane Wyzga. This much I know. I have come to expect too much - of myself, of my plans, of my aspirations. My expectations were giving me heartache. It was time to step away, create some distance between me and my expectations. We are taught to exceed our expectations! And yet when we let go a bit, make room for the possibility that an event, an objective, an outcome might unfold in ways we could not have expected we are inviting a variety of possibilities! If outcomes do not conform to what we expected does that mean we failed? No. Practical Tip: The unforeseen gives us a chance to be flexible, to see something positive in the unexpected outcome. Now we get to adapt. The more we strengthen our adaptability muscle the more resilient we become. The more resilient we become the more capable we are of recognizing that Life is one grand experiment asking us to stay open, alert and optimistic as we set intentions and release expectations. Guaranteed! You're always welcome: "Come for the stories - Stay for the magic!" Speaking of magic, I hope you'll subscribe, share a 5-star rating and nice review on your social media or podcast channel of choice, bring your friends and rellies, and join us! You will have wonderful company as we continue to walk our lives together. The Unforeseen Costs of Aging In Place, #303

Retire With Ryan

For many Americans, the idea of aging in place, or remaining in your own home as you grow older, represents comfort, independence, and familiarity. Most people understand the emotional benefits of remaining in a familiar environment, but often overlook the financial challenges, from home modifications and repairs to healthcare and in-home support, that could threaten their retirement savings. On the show this week, I break down the five key areas where your budget could take a hit and offer strategies to help you plan ahead, evaluate your options, and secure your ideal retirement lifestyle. If you're thinking about your future living situation or helping a loved one prepare, you won't want to miss this episode.   You will want to hear this episode if you are interested in... [00:00] The preference for aging in place [05:08] Home modifications for accessibility [08:28] Considering home maintenance and healthcare costs [13:32] Planning housing costs for retirement [14:55] Planning for future housing needs   Understanding Aging in Place The reasons people want to age in place are clear: minimal upheaval, a sense of control, independence, and the emotional security of familiar surroundings. But it's common to underestimate what it actually costs to make this dream a reality. Many retirees fail to plan for the inevitable expenses, which can erode savings and force uncomfortable, last-minute decisions down the road.   Five Major Financial Considerations for Aging in Place   1. Home Modifications A key prerequisite for staying at home safely is making your living space accessible. While some modifications—like installing grab bars or lever handles—may be relatively inexpensive, needs can escalate quickly. More significant updates, such as walk-in tubs, stairlifts, or ramp additions, can run into the tens of thousands of dollars. Even a basic stairlift installation can cost over $5,000, and major renovations like adding a first-floor bedroom or bathroom can easily be prohibitive, especially if done reactively in a crisis.   2. Maintenance and Repairs Beyond mortgage payments, insurance, and property taxes, ongoing home maintenance is a substantial, often underestimated expense. Homes age just as their residents do, meaning roofs (with a typical 25-30-year lifespan), HVAC systems (lasting 10-15 years), and even electrical or plumbing systems may require expensive repairs. Consider getting a thorough evaluation of your home's current state and expected major repairs over the coming decades. Add these projected costs into your retirement budget so they don't catch you off guard.   3. Upkeep and Outsourcing Chores When you first retire, you may be able to mow the lawn, shovel snow, or clean gutters. But as you age, these tasks may become physically challenging, if not unsafe, necessitating the hiring of help. The annual cost of landscaping, snow removal, and routine upkeep can add up, sometimes exceeding the maintenance fees of a condominium or senior community. Evaluate the true costs of outsourcing these chores over the long haul. In some cases, a housing alternative with built-in maintenance can be both safer and more cost-effective.   4. Medical and Healthcare Needs Aging at home often means additional out-of-pocket expenses for home healthcare aides, nurses, and various medical equipment. Many necessities, such as medical alert systems or even prescription medication management solutions, are not fully covered by Medicare or standard insurance. It's essential to factor in potential costs for in-home care, equipment, and transportation to appointments should you lose the ability to drive.   5. Long-Term Care and Support A frequent misconception is that Medicare will cover most long-term or in-home care needs. In reality, this type of care—particularly ongoing daily care—typically isn't covered, aside from certain short-term situations. Long-term care insurance is an option, but only a small percentage of Americans over 50 have it, often due to high premium costs. Given that full-time nursing care can cost as much as $180,000 annually in some regions, having a clear strategy for funding care, whether through insurance, earmarked savings, or asset liquidation, is critical.   Developing a Proactive Aging in Place Plan To successfully age in place, start planning early. Assess your home's lifespan and the modifications needed, estimate maintenance and care costs, and integrate these projections into your retirement strategy. If the total costs seem unmanageable, now is the time to explore alternatives like downsizing, moving to a condominium, or relocating to a community with built-in support, especially in today's favorable seller's market.   Making these plans before a crisis ensures you'll have more options, less stress, and a better chance at maintaining both your independence and your financial security throughout retirement.   Resources Mentioned Retirement Readiness Review Subscribe to the Retire with Ryan YouTube Channel Download my entire book for FREE  Planning to age in place? https://wels2.blob.core.windows.net/daily-devotions/20260130dev.mp3 Listen to Devotion I write to you, young men, because you are strong, and the word of God lives in you, and you have overcome the evil one. 1 John 2:14 Renewed by the Light Before you go camping in the woods, be sure to check that your flashlights all work properly and the batteries are all new. You will be far away from the artificial lights illuminating the cities and suburbs. Many thick trees can block the natural light of the stars. Unforeseen clouds and rain might also douse the light of a campfire. Before facing a new day in this dark world, be sure to check that your spirit is recharged with the truth and grace of Jesus. We are still living far away from heaven's glorious light. The things of this world that are supposed to bring us happiness are merely artificial lights that quickly burn out. Unexpected temptations threaten to plunge us into sinful decisions and right back into the darkness of fear and shame. We constantly need to recharge the lights of Jesus' truth and love in our hearts. John tells us how: “I write to you, young men, because you are strong, and the word of God lives in you, and you have overcome the evil one.” The evil one still accuses, deceives, and seeks to destroy faith. Yet John dares to speak in the past tense: “You have overcome the evil one.” This victory is not based on present feelings or visible success, but on Jesus' finished work. By his cross and resurrection, Jesus has already defeated Satan. Faith clings to that victory. In ourselves, we are weak. Our faith wavers, our resolve collapses, and our obedience is imperfect. But in Jesus, we are strong. Those who live in the word of God will have the word of God living in them. It will renew your faith in Jesus’ victory. It will continually rekindle the joy in your heart that Jesus has overcome the darkness of evil for you. Keep living in the word of God, and the word of God will live in you, reminding you daily that in Jesus, you are strong. Prayer: Jesus, Light of the world, shine in my heart. Forgive my sins and fill me with your love so that I may walk in your ways and love my neighbor as you have loved me. Amen. Daily Devotions is brought to you by WELS. https://wels2.blob.core.windows.net/daily-devotions/20260130dev.mp3 Listen to Devotion I write to you, young men, because you are strong, and the word of God lives in you, and you have overcome the evil one. For this episode, I had originally planned on telling multiple, shorter stories. Then I read one article:GI's plead not guilty in murder hearingsTwo Ft. Lewis soldiers pleaded innocent in Superior Court today to unrelated first-degree murder charges stemming from the deaths last week of another soldier and a 28 year old Graham housewife. Steven Paul Criss, 19, offered his plea in the slaying last Thursday of Jacob Kim Brown, 22, an Army infantryman, whose bullet-riddled body was found in a ditch near Roy later in the day. Brown was reported to have left his Olympia home to meet a man for discussion of a debt. Trial of Criss was scheduled for November 29 by Judge James V. Ramsdell, who refused to set bail. Also pleading innocent was Sgt. 1C Richard Michael Wallingford, 33, of E. Madison St. who was accused of the gunshot slaying last Wednesday of Cindy Ann Barajas of 119th Ave E. Graham. Mrs. Barajas had been shot in the back of the head. Wallingford, whose arraignment was continued last Friday when he appeared in court in an apparently dissociative state, was scheduled for trial November 22. Bail was denied. Attorneys told the court Friday that the defendant had refused to give authorities anything more than his name, rank and service serial number. Putting those key names into the Newspapers.com search engine, I was able to find the details surrounding both unusual cases and decided I would tell those stories. Finding these cases, featuring stories of victims I've never heard of or read about is one of my favorite aspects of using Newspapers.com. Today I'll be telling you the stories of Jacob Brown, Peter Zito Jr., Donald Barton and Cindy Barajas- the forgotten victims, lost to the back page. For more details and photos, you can visit our blog at Murderintherain.comOregon Journal Thu, Oct 03, 1974 · Two Teenagers Shot Dead On Oak Hills Parking Lot - Detectives suspect decades-old disappearance, murder are intertwined | Forest Grove News-Times - The News Tribune - October 12 1976 - Obituaries - The News Tribune Sat, Oct 09, 1976 - Olympian Slain, Tacoman Held - The News Tribune Fri, Dec 10, 1976 -Army gives GI life for murder - KIRO-Killer Army vet charged in 1974 double murder of Oregon teens - Cold Case Solved: Man Arrested for 1974 Murders of Two Teenagers | Washington County, OR - Looking into the Unforeseen with a Local Author - Seeking Justice for 1974 Murder - The News Tribune Tue, Oct 12, 1976 - GI's Plead Not Guilty in Murder Hearings - The Spokesman Review Sept. 15 1962 - Weddings - 47° 4' 57.4028" N 122° 35' 53.3814" W - The News Tribune October 7 1976- A Daughter's Murder a Father's Grief - The News Tribune October 7 1976 - Solider Held in Fatal Shooting of Woman - The News Tribune October 7 1976 - Portrait of a Father's Grief - Spokane Chronicle December 20 1960- Entering Military - Spokane Chronicle Sept. 10 1962- Weddings - Spokane Chronicle May 3 1978- Courts - Cynthia Ann Woods Barajas (1947-1976) - Find a Grave Memorial - The News Tribune Fri, Oct 08, 1976- Obituaries - The News Tribune Thu, Oct 07, 1976 - Solider held in fatal shooting of woman - Tri-City Herald Sun, Oct 10, 1976 - Defendant gives name, rank, serial number - The News Tribune Sat, Oct 09, 1976 - Silent Suspect Gets Continuance - The News Tribune Fri, Oct 29, 1976- Murder Trial Reset - The News Tribune Mon, Jan 10, 1977 - Sergeant stands trial for death of young woman  -  The News Tribune Tue, Jan 11, 1977 - Defense will claim insanity - The News Tribune Thu, Jan 13, 1977 - Suspect threatened to kill self - The News Tribune Wed, Jan 12, 1977 - Gasoline-Soaked Wallingford admitted killing, deputy testifies -The News Tribune Mon, Jan 24, 1977 - Cindy Ann and Steve- who speaks for them? The News -Tribune Mon, Jan 24, 1977 - GI Murder Sentence Delayed - The News Tribune Thu, Jan 27, 1977- convicted murder given life sentenceOur Sponsors:* Check out Kensington Publishing: https://www.kensingtonbooks.comSupport this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/murder-in-the-rain/exclusive-contentAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brands

AI is here, and it's sparking conversations about everything from how we work to how we report. This episode of The Pre-Read, brought to you by Workiva, dives into the heart of what happens when artificial intelligence meets the real world of finance and risk. We're talking about why CFOs, general counsels, and audit chairs are all leaning in—and what questions they're asking.  Our own CFO, Jill Klindt, spills the beans about how finance teams can use AI to make their jobs better, not replace them. Think augmenting expertise and making those tedious tasks disappear. She's also got the inside scoop on why data quality is like gold for AI success and why CFOs should lead the charge when it comes to experimenting with this new tech.  Plus, Alan Wilson, Partner at WilmerHale, gives us the straight talk on the legal side of things. He emphasizes getting your legal team involved early, treating AI just like any other business risk, and keeping an eye on how regulatory accountability is already shaping up. Today, I'm excited to speak with Van Carlson, Founder & CEO of SRA 831(b) Admin, a specialized risk management solutions company. Van has over 25 years of experience within the risk management industry. Prior to founding SRA, Van ran his own property and casualty firm for 15 years and was awarded Presidents Council's and other top-performing achievements during his tenure as a P&C Agent. In 2008, he saw the Great Recession hit his commercial business clients hard, and just like them, he was also affected by the sharp economic downturn. Out of that challenging experience, he emerged committed to developing better ways to manage risk and improve business operations for his clients, and consequently founded SRA 831(b) Admin to pursue this mission. In this episode, we delve into the topic of micro-captive insurance plans, or 831(b) plans, and the ways family businesses and family offices can deploy this specialized tool to manage a range of risks. Van covers the fundamentals, offering our audience an overview of how 831(b) plans work and why wealth owners and family enterprises should consider deploying this innovative risk management tool. There are many ways 831(b) plans can create value for families and their enterprises. Van describes the most common use cases families and family offices can address by deploying 831(b) plans and shares some examples of the different unfunded liabilities this tool can help address. One very practical and helpful tool Van developed is the 831B.com website. He talks about the resources that are available on the website and how families and family office teams can utilize this public resource. The 831(b) solutions have many positive applications, but as is the case with everything in life, there are also downsides to consider. Van covers the potential risks associated with 831(b) plans and shares his tips on how our listeners can avoid or mitigate these risks. Please enjoy this insightful conversation with a pioneer and thought leader in the technical field of micro-captive insurance plans.

Is the market ready for a vendor to throw its hands up, declare bankruptcy, and push all notification obligations to its insureds? Is the market ready for the mass-scale class actions that would follow? Do insurers need to start thinking about sublimit for these types of events? I would love to get everyone's thoughts so keep the questions, calls, and comments coming!
