In this episode, Michael Meade considers how there are always two stories going on in life. The ongoing drama of what we call the world and the story of the individual soul trying to awaken to a life of meaning and purpose. The two stories are secretly related and become more intensely connected and dramatic during times of upheaval and radical change. When the way we have been taught to view life no longer explains the world in which we live, we are being called to awaken to a greater imagination and deeper understanding of the world around us. In mythological terms, while one world is collapsing another is secretly forming and waiting to become known. And because we are involved in both stories, we become witnesses to the collapse and potential contributors to the renewal. That kind of imagination does not align with most modern science, which believes that entropy will simply drag us all down in the end anyway; nor does it fit with religious ideas that declare that the end might be near. In times of chaos what we need to recall and better understand is that the mystery behind it all is the story of collapse and renewal. Mythological stories offer a framework for the essential and necessary process of re-creation. Just as a forest renews when the great trees fall and decompose before the next version can grow. Knowing about this process of collapse and renewal does not make experiencing it less painful or even less confusing. It does give us a mythic and imaginative framework that can help us cope with a world gone wrong, while also developing practices for assisting in the process of rejuvenation and renewal of life on Earth. When Lauren was invited to share her story on the podcast, she hesitated. Talking publicly about your sex life isn't easy—especially when your experience doesn't fit the cultural script of what a "healthy" woman is supposed to want. Then she surprised us with an unexpected suggestion: what if her sister joined the conversation? What followed was a candid, funny, and moving discussion between two sisters whose experiences with sex, desire, marriage, motherhood, and womanhood couldn't look more different on the surface. Together, they unpack the impossible expectations placed on women, the messages they inherited about sexuality, and the ways both high desire and low desire can leave women feeling like they're somehow falling short. Breathe Pictures Photography Podcast: Documentaries and Interviews
While I'm away in Scotland leading the Scotland 2026 retreat, I thought it would be fitting to bring you a special edition from The Photowalk archive. So, it's an interview-only special where I'm revisiting two conversations with Scottish photographers whose work has left a lasting impression on me, and whose careers have taken them in very different directions. Albert Watson was born in Edinburgh and has spent more than five decades producing some of the most recognisable photographs ever made. From portraits of actors, musicians and world leaders to fashion and commercial work, his images have appeared on countless magazine covers and gallery walls around the world. Kieran Dodds grew up in the Highlands and is known for thoughtful long-term documentary projects that explore people, place and identity. We revisit his fascinating Gingers project, which saw him travel the globe photographing red-haired people in countries where you might least expect to find them. Two photographers, two very different careers, and a chance to hear again from a pair of Scots whose work continues to inspire photographers around the world. The NEW Zine is launched: REFLECTIONS. Read more about our photographic adventures on our photography travel website, The Journey Beyond. Links to all guests and features will be on the show page, my sincere thanks to our Extra Milers, without whom we wouldn't be walking each week and Arthelper.ai, giving photographers smart tools to plan, promote, and manage your creative projects more easily. WHY: A Sketchbook of Life is available HERE.

Where do you get your information about what's happening in the greater Charlottesville area? Hopefully from multiple sources in order to expose yourself to multiple perspectives. But perhaps this is your first time looking at (or listening to) the opening words of a sonic edition of Charlottesville Community Engagement, a newsletter and podcast that seeks to get more people to understand what's happening at local and regional government.Longtime readers are aware that there is a podcast edition of this newsletter that eventually shows up. No matter the day of publication, the sonic version also serves as a way for people who refuse to listen to still have an opportunity to sample stories from the past week that have since been posted over at Information Charlottesville. This particular edition is a longer version than usual as there was no dedicated podcast last week. That means this one has audio stories from two WTJU radio editions plus some that didn't fit in the broadcast version for May 16. There's a lot happening in this community and I'm determine to cover what I can through the lens of local government.I'm Sean Tubbs and I'll remind everyone that this work is only possible due to paid subscriptions to Substack as well as charitable contributions. Since July 2020, this newsletter seeks to bring information to as many people as possible in the hope of improving conversations. In this edition:* Salvation Army launches fundraising campaign for Center for Hope (read the story)* Many details remain to be worked out for how three groups will work together at Charlottesville's future low-barrier shelter (read the story)* Albemarle staff working on five projects to implement new Comprehensive Plan (read the story)* Albemarle Supervisors leave Comprehensive Plan amendment process as is (read the story)* Charlottesville to form committee of developers to encourage more Missing Middle housing (read the story)* Council holds first reading on how to use Community Development Block Grants CDBG funds in 2026 (read the story)* Tree Commission presents recommendations for how City Council can help improve tree canopy (read the story)* In a divided vote, MPO Policy Board moves forward with two Smart Scale projects without city support (read the story)* Albemarle and Charlottesville both mark Older Americans Month (read the story)First shout-out: Camp Albemarle!Since the middle of 2020, one way I've brought in revenue for Charlottesville Community Engagement has been by offering shout-outs to those who were willing to pay a little more to help this venture get off the ground. For six years, one of those people has been someone who wanted you to know a little about Camp Albemarle, which has for over eighty years been a “wholesome rural, rustic and restful site for youth activities, church groups, civic events and occasional private programs.”Located on 14 acres on the banks of the Moorman's River near Free Union, Camp Albemarle continues as a legacy of being a Civilian Conservation Corps project that sought to promote the importance of rural activities.Rebuilt in the early 1980's, a legacy of 4-H programming thrives along with a wide range of additional activities. Educational initiatives from schools across the region spark environmental learning moments at every turn. Visit the website to learn more!Second shout-out: Support this journalism with a paid subscription or a charitable gift! Every day I wake up and think about what I need to do to get stories out about what's happening. Over the past six years, I've built an engine to remind me when I clock in what I need to do next. If life is a role-playing game, I rolled the dice and ended up in the weird category of observer.I'm able to do this work and be prolific because of the investments of others over the past 20 years. For almost six years now, this newsletter has sought to document upcoming decisions about the future. There is a value to having someone consistently paying attention to help others understand how we got to here and how we might go forward.Perhaps you want to help ensure the work continues?* A paid subscription through Substack is the most effective. There is little to no content behind the paywall, but this helps pay the bills.* You can make a charitable contribution through the Tiny News Collective. This directly supports journalism and is likely the way I'll be able to hire people. Learn more here.* You can become an experimental advertiser! For a very low price, you can support the work by getting a message out in the form of a shout-out, a sponsorship message, or a display ad over at Information Charlottesville. Message me for more information. But perhaps the most important thing is to share this newsletter with people you think might be interested. Right now I'm very close to 5,000 subscribers to this newsletter and it would be nice to cross that threshold some time this year. Do your part and find out what the share button does! And here are some social media possibilities:* I created a BlueSky account because I missed Twitter but I don't do much except post links to Information Charlottesville stories. That may change.* There are 444 followers of the Town Crier Productions Facebook page which is currently solely used to let people know when a story has been posted to Information Charlottesville. I may begin using this to do live video of podcast recording. Interested?* There are slightly more followers on Instagram, but I have paused posting here because I want to make the images look better and so far that's not been worth investing the time.* I post a version of the Week Ahead on Reddit each Sunday which is a little shorter. This is intended to attract people to the newsletter and many of you got here from there. But there is no official page and you have to know my username. Maybe I'll change that in the future?* Except for reposts of this show, there is no new content on the Charlottesville Podcasting Network but it predates this newsletter by 15 years. I had a good idea and all I wanted to do was tell stories about the community. Here I am still, hoping to get more people involved.* Except for instructional videos on how to produce audio, I'm not doing video. Not everyone has to do video. But I just found this very unwatchable thing I did for Patreon supporters back in May 2021! This is a public episode. It was replying to them with undeniable accuracy. There was a ghost with them in the room… or maybe something worse. In these true scary stories, we'll hear from Vanessa who retells her experience in joining a group of friends to use the ouija board. When that didn't work, they turned to a ghost box (a spirit communication device), and they were able to contact the other side. Unfortunately for them, the session turned hostile. In the second story, Kristy tells us about a childhood encounter in a remote house where someone, or something, was moving objects in the dark. It was until much later when Kristy and her cousins learned of the tragic reasons behind the occurrences. You can get these ad-free through ScaryPlus.com free for 14 days, then 4.99 per month. April is Second Chance Month, and this episode brings two powerful stories that show what can happen when opportunity meets determination. First, we welcome back Brandon Downey, who first joined us in Episode 19 while rebuilding his life after incarceration. Now, several years later, Brandon returns to share how recovery, persistence, and the support of second chance employers helped him transform his future. Today, he is working at the Hampshire County Jail in reentry services, mentoring others, and rebuilding his life as a fa-ther. Then, we head to Ohio to meet Lindsey Watzek of JBM Packaging, a company known for its commitment to Fair Chance hiring. Lindsey shares how a felony connected to addiction once left her feeling hopeless, but through the support of a recovery-friendly workplace, she has built a stable, independent life and is now working toward becoming the first female su-pervisor at her company. Two journeys. Two employers who said yes. And two powerful reminders that when people are given a real opportunity, everything can change.

We are living through a time where big positive change seems unachievable, but there are two instances from the recent past that prove change is possible. For over a century, Indigenous people along the Klamath River fought to protect their way of life, and the salmon they depend on. Their persistence helped remove four dams and restore hundreds of miles of river. In Los Angeles, decades of science, activism, and policy turned toxic smog into cleaner air. Both stories reveal that progress takes persistence, coalition-building, and time. But when communities push and institutions respond, meaningful change is possible. If you've ever stood in the middle of your house and thought, “Where do I even start?”… you are absolutely not alone. But what if the problem isn't your lack of discipline… it's your approach? In this conversation, I sat down with Ingrid Jansen from The Declutter Hub, and she completely reframed how I think about clutter. We didn't just talk about getting rid of stuff. We talked about why it feels so hard in the first place—and how to make it feel doable (even in the middle of real life).Because here's the truth: clutter isn't just about things. It's about emotions, habits, identity, and sometimes even guilt. And once you understand that piece, everything starts to shift. In this episode, you'll hear:Why “decluttering your whole house” is actually the fastest way to get stuckThe simple mindset shift that makes decluttering feel lighter and more positiveWhy starting with what you want to keep (not what to throw away) changes everythingHow to break any space into small, manageable chunks you can tackle in minutesThe surprising advice Ingrid gives about what to do when you feel unsure about an itemWhat the “messy middle” is and why so many people quit right thereHow clutter and emotions like guilt, stress, and overwhelm are deeply connectedThe hidden ways new clutter keeps sneaking into your home (and how to stop it)Resources We Mention for Easy DeclutteringIngrid and Lesley's book: Reset Your Home: Unpack your emotions and your clutter, step by step (Amazon/Bookshop.org)Get started in the Declutter Hub!Take the clutter quizDig more into the mental load of clutter with Katy WellsOrganizing styles for families with Cas from ClutterbugGet a peek at Teens Cook Real Food right here! Before the platinum records… before Metal Health changed heavy metal forever… there was a beginning — and not everyone remembers it the same way.In this episode, original bassist Kelly Garni tells his firsthand account of how Quiet Riot actually formed in early-70s Los Angeles. But the story longtime frontman Kevin DuBrow shared publicly over the years paints a very different picture. So which version is true?We dig into the conflicting origin stories, the friendships, the ambitions, and the mythology that formed one of the most important bands of the Sunset Strip era. Memory, ego, media narratives — and the passage of time — all collide as we try to separate rock history from rock legend. If you think you know how Quiet Riot started… you might not.Listen to Episode 358 - Kelly Garni: His Bond with Randy Rhoads & the Birth of Quiet Riot

Surplus is performance. (00:00:00) We begin with Dr. Brett McLaurin, Professor of Environmental, Geographical, and Geological Sciences at Commonwealth University, who helps us understand why certain rocks can sing. Using the famous ringing rocks of Bucks County as a starting point, Dr. McLaurin explains how mineral composition, cooling rates, and internal stress create boulders that chime like bells when struck. From Pennsylvania to sites around the world, these “lithophonic” rocks reveal surprising truths about Earth’s processes — and why some landscapes literally hold their own music. (00:23:17) Then we shift from geological resonance to human resilience with international fine artist Dionn Reneé, a Harrisburg native whose original artwork was selected for the global marketing campaign of Sony’s The Woman King, starring Viola Davis. Dionn shares how her lifelong battle with lupus, her commitment to fitness and MMA training, and her deep connection to the film’s themes shaped her artistic approach. Her work — celebrated across the entertainment industry — reflects the same warrior spirit that defines the story on screen Support WITF: https://www.witf.org/support/give-now/See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Which story am I telling today, and how is it shaping my life?In this impromptu, from-the-heart episode, I share a moment that stopped me in real time and reminded me just how powerful our narratives truly are. After returning from a family trip to Mexico, I realized there were two completely true versions of the same experience I could share. One rooted in frustration, discomfort, and everything that went wrong. The other grounded in gratitude, presence, connection, and what went beautifully right. Both stories were true. But only one left me feeling empowered, steady, and in the driver's seat of my life. This episode is an invitation to notice the stories you tell about your days, your work, your relationships, your challenges, and your life. Because the story you choose does more than describe your experience. It shapes your energy, your outlook, and the direction everything moves next.We talk about self leadership, emotional responsibility, and why embodying these lessons matters if we truly want to raise an empowered next generation. Leadership does not start with what we say. It starts with how we live, how we interpret, and how we choose meaning in real time. This is about leading yourself first. Always. In this episode, I share:• Why every experience holds multiple true narratives• How the story you tell impacts your energy and emotional state• The difference between recounting life versus consciously choosing meaning• Why self leadership is the foundation of real impact• How your daily narratives shape your year and your life• What it truly means to lead by example for the next generationIf this episode resonated with you, I want to personally invite you into Lead From Within, a free two day live training happening January 26 and 27 at noon Eastern. This experience is for women who know that to lead anyone, you must first lead yourself. We will explore reclaiming your inner authority, trusting your voice, and stepping fully into the leader of your own life.Save your free virtual seat at:melodypourmoradi.com/leadfromwithinI am so grateful you are here. Thank you for listening, for reflecting, and for choosing growth.Let's Stay Connected! As an empowerment coach, author, twin girl mom, and the creator of the GiRLiFE Academy, my mission is to help every woman and girl discover her voice and live a life that lights her up from the inside out.I'd love to connect with you and continue this beautiful journey together!
Why not start a week off with a podcast edition of Charlottesville Community Engagement? There are likely many answers why not with a primary one being that it is atypical for such a program to be sent out through this feed on a Monday morning. Perhaps a better question is why produce audio versions of this newsletter at all? The answer to that is simply just to take a listen and hear for yourself. In this edition:* Charlottesville City Council is briefed on transportation happenings, including plans to hire at least ten bus drivers a year until there's a total of 108 (read the story)* The Virginia Department of Transportation says Charlottesville is making progress towards delivering transportation projects, but the city is still deficient (read the story)* A future UVA Engineering Building gets boost from use of strategic funds (read the story)* The UVA Buildings and Grounds gets updates on various projects and adds repairs to Steele Wing to the Major Capital Plan (read the story)* Charlottesville Planning Commission gets updates on UVA projects (read the story)Shout-out to Patreon-fueled shout-outs!Since the beginning of this newsletter, several organizations and one business have been supporters of Town Crier Productions with a $25 monthly contribution funded through Patreon or some other financial method! That system is slowly giving away to something different but I thought I would take this special Monday morning slot to thank the following for still sticking to it:* Alliance Francaise* Camp Albemarle* Charlottesville Area Tree Stewards* Charlottesville E-Bike Lending Library* Cville Jazz Society* Design Develop* Plant Virginia Natives* Re-Leaf* Rivanna Conservation Alliance* WTJUIf you have a moment, take a look at any of the ones that sound interesting to you. Learn something new! A new system of shout-outs will come into place in 2026 and if you're interested in sponsorship opportunities, please drop me a line. I'm a one-person information outlet and for that number to go up, I have to continue to grow revenue. This is a public episode. The trial of Brian Walshe isn't just a courtroom proceeding — it's a showdown between two narratives that couldn't be further apart. On one side, prosecutors have built the kind of timeline you rarely see outside a forensic textbook: predawn Google searches that read like a step-by-step guide to covering up a crime, store receipts for cutting tools and chemicals, cell phone data tracing every mile driven, and DNA pulled from a trash compactor hours from the family home. It's clinical. It's cold. And it's devastating. On the other side, the defense has presented a story rooted not in data but in emotional possibility — the claim that Anna Walshe suddenly died with no warning, and Brian, overwhelmed and terrified, spiraled into a series of decisions that look indistinguishable from deliberate concealment. They're not denying the cover-up. They're reframing it as panic. And that's where the real battle begins: because juries are made of human beings, not forensic analysts. Panic can be messy. Panic can be irrational. Panic can make people do things that look nothing like the person they were the day before. But can panic really explain Google searches that happened before the defense's timeline of death? Can panic explain the house visitor leaving shortly before the alleged moment Anna died? Can panic explain the organized trips to stores in multiple towns, for supplies that prosecutors say match the disposal effort? And if the defense can make even one juror wonder — just wonder — whether it's strange but not impossible? That's a very different outcome. Tonight, we break down what's at stake, why the stories differ so drastically, and why this case may come down to a single question: Which version can a jury actually live with? #BrianWalshe #AnaWalshe #TrueCrime #HiddenKillers #CourtTV #TrialCoverage #CrimeTimeline #ForensicEvidence #LegalAnalysis #BobMotta Want to comment and watch this podcast as a video? Send us a textIt's been three years — thanks for sticking with us. Without you, this show wouldn't even be possible. For our anniversary episode, we're going a little X-Files with it.First, we head down to Arizona and talk about the Vatican, the Jesuits, and a telescope on Apache land nicknamed Lucifer. Yeah, you read that right. A state-of-the-art observatory in the middle of a land dispute, wrapped up with questions about who gets to look at the stars — and why they needed a name like that. Then we jump to Washington state, where the Colville Tribes set up a Bigfoot hotline. Locals, hunters, and even loggers called in to report strange encounters in the woods. Some of those calls line up with stories the elders had already been telling for generations.Nightmares of the Americas: Indigenous Tales — three years in, thanks for listening!
