How much do you dislike doing dentals? If you're like most vets I'm guessing that the answer to that question is - “I dislike it rather a lot.” But then there's that small minority of vets who just love teeth. Our guest for this episode, as you'll hear, was NOT one of them, and yet these days that is exactly what he does all day, every day. And he loves it. Dr Aaron Forsayeth has been working in full-time dental referral practice since 2006, after starting his vet career with a decade in mixed and small animal practice. He is highly involved in the dentistry world in Australia, including a stint as the president of the Australian Veterinary Dental Society and a current role as Policy Councillor for the AVDS, the dentistry branch of the Australian Veterinary Association. Our conversation with Aaron covers, as you'd expect, a career in dentistry: why you'd want to do it, what's good about it, what's not so great, and pathways to becoming a veterinary dentist, but we go way beyond that. Aaron talks about his decision not to specialise, despite an obvious passion for what he does. We talk about that very common phenomenon of the 2-5 year ‘dip' - when many vets find themselves disillusioned with their careers and possibly looking for an exit strategy, and how getting really good at something might be what you're looking for. Long-term contraception of cattle can benefit the welfare and production of animals where females cannot be segregated from males and in other, limited, circumstances. In extensive pastoral conditions, contraception enables cull females to survive and achieve marketable body condition by preventing the stress of mismanaged pregnancy, calving and lactation. To do this I'm going to be joined by Dr Dave Morrell. Dave is the founder and owner of Broome Cattle Vets, and has over 40 years' experience as a small, large and exotic animal vet. Dave actively participated in the Tuberculosis eradication campaign and is an active member of the Australian Cattle Vets and Northern Australia Biosecurity Surveillance network. For this episode, rather than casting our conversational net wide and seeing which topics come up, we have a very specific topic. We wanted to get insights into complaints made against us as vets. Our goal with the episode was to help you find better ways to think about and live with the threat of the official board complaint, with the end goal being, as always, a happier vet career. We think we found the perfect guest for it.   Dr David Tabrett is an emergency vet and founder and director of the Animal Referral Emergency Centre in Newcastle, New South Wales. David has been a vet for more than 30 years - from mixed animal to general smallies work, and eventually emergency. He has his memberships in Medicine as well as Emergency and Critical Care and has served a 6-year term as Treasurer of the Chapter of Emergency and Critical Care of the Australia / New Zealand College of Veterinary Surgeons. He's also a longstanding member of the local branch of the Australian Veterinary Association and has served in the roles of Treasurer and President. In addition to hosting a weekly radio show for pet talkback over the past 12 years, and teaching veterinary nurses in critical care for TAFE, David was recognised as the 2017 Australian Small Animal Practitioner of the Year by the Australian Small Animal Veterinarians chapter of the AVA.  David started his own emergency hospital in 2004, and at present, the clinic has a team of around 75 people working 24/7 and also offers referral services in surgery, critical care, dermatology and rehabilitation.  As you can imagine: in a career like that you'll face a few obstacles, and you learn a few things. It has the image of a job for animal lovers, but vets are revealing the harsh reality of the job includes female staff fearing sexual assault when on call.

Overseas veterinarians can now request special exemptions to enter Australia in an effort to address a national vet shortage which has been exacerbated by COVID-19. The Australian Veterinary Association has flagged at least 800 more vets are urgently needed across Australia to fill a shortfall, and say pressure on the industry has intensified as a result of the 'pandemic puppy boom'.

This week I want to start a conversation, a discussion – with YOU.   I want to know what YOUR thoughts, opinions and ideas are on a letter I received over the weekend.It's an Open Letter written by a practicing veterinarian in a small town who tragically lost her veterinarian husband to suicide three years ago.   The full text of Dr Jasmin's letter is on episode 18's Paws Claws Wet Noses show notes page for this episode so you can read it yourself.It's written to the Veterinary Practitioners Boards of Australia, the Australian Veterinary Association and anyone else who cares to read on… and is sent by Dr Jasmin Klocker – a mixed practice veterinarian in NSW.The Australian CVE – the Centre for Veterinary Education - will invite comments from the AVA and the Veterinary Boards which will be published in Issue 303 in June 2021. Bushfire season is always a sketchy time of year, the tinder dry bush, full of high oil plants like eucalyptus make for a highly combustible mix. Add to that some of the worst droughts on record and you get the picture of why Australia seems like it's ablaze. This year, though, things are much worse. Much, much worse. The current fires cover a staggering landmass and dwarf the fires in California and the Amazon. The environmental and economic impact is hard to quantify, but it is estimated that millions and millions of animals lives have been lost. And that's not to speak of the human cost as communities are displaced, homes destroyed and lives are lost. One of our criteria for selecting guests here at the vet vault is to find people from across varied and interesting parts of our profession to showcase all doors that can open to you with your veterinary degree. Well, today's guest is the poster boy for veterinary career diversity! Dr Guy Weerasinghe has covered more ground in the veterinary profession than many of us will do in a lifetime. He's been in diary vet in New Zealand, a small animal shelter vet for the RSPCA - Australia's largest veterinary charity, he's worked in government doing field surveillance and policy, and has spent time in general small animal practice. During this time he gained a masters degree in Veterinary Public Health, and then became a diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Preventative Medicine: in other words - he's a certified Veterinary Public Health specialist. While he was doing all of this he co-founded an online employment agency, served as the President of Australian Veterinarians in Public Health, was a branch president for the Australian Veterinary Association, co-authored the AVA's official position statement on climate change, and became a regular speaker at a range of global conferences on the subjects of zoonoses and preventative medicine. A career like this does not go unnoticed, and Guy was elected as the World Small Animal Veterinary Associations' young veterinarian of the year for 2018. He is currently a veterinary officer with the Northern Australia Quarantine Strategy under the Department of Agriculture - in other words: he's a Veterinary Public heath government vet, and, to top off a big decade, he became a dad 18 months ago. All of this in less than 10 years! As you can imagine - we had a lot to talk about. For this episode we are fortunate to have with us a young vet who is contributing more to the veterinary profession in her relatively short career than many of us will do in a lifetime. Dr Paula Parker was the president of the Australian Veterinary Association for 2018/19, and is the youngest person ever to be elected to this position. When she is not leading the team that makes major policy decisions and guides the future of our our profession both in Australia and internationally she works as an emergency vet in a practice in the Gold Coast, Australia. Our chat with Paula unearthed some very practical tips and tools for every day life as a vet. I personally found the discussions about productivity, mental resetting and transitioning, and how to get past no especially useful. Mary vineyard in the Yarra Vallet wine region of Melbourne, Australia. Not only is he famous for his wonderful wines, David mentored Brendan when he was a zoo veterinarian. We sit down with David to discuss wildlife medicine, tell a few stores, and David tells us a wonderful story from his days working as a zoo veterinarian in the field.
