MONEY FM 89.3 - Prime Time with Howie Lim, Bernard Lim & Finance Presenter JP Ong
We’ve taken you through the ins and outs of over 300 companies globally over the past two years. That’s almost one company every one or two working days – rain or shine. But there is one company that we have not talked about all this time. And that is the company behind our radio station MONEY FM 89.3. Yes we are talking about the Singapore Press Holdings or more specifically what’s now known as SPH Media. With its legacy tracing back to the years 1845 and 1923 with the first runs of the English daily The Straits Times and the predecessor of Chinese newspaper Lianhe Zaobao, SPH Media is a leading media group with operations in publishing print and digital newspapers, magazines and books. The firm started out as SPH Limited in August 1984 where it brought together newspaper brands from two companies, namely The Straits Times Press Group (STP) and the Singapore News and Publications Limited (SNPL), as well as two other publishing, production and distribution companies called Times Publishing Bhd (TP) and Singapore Newspaper Services Pte Ltd (SNS). At that point, the company published seven newspapers in three languages – The Straits Times, Berita Harian, The Business Times, Lianhe Zaobao, Lianhe Wanbao, Shin Min Daily News and the Singapore Monitor. The mission is to be the trusted source of news on Singapore and Asia and to represent the communities that make up Singapore and to connect them to the world. Over four decades have passed since and the business has now expanded to also own and operate radio stations and outdoor media, including MONEY FM 89.3. SPH Limited also underwent a restructuring of the media business, with SPH Media taking over SPH Limited’s entire media related business and operating as a public company limited by guarantee. But why are we speaking to SPH Media you might ask? Well, we want to find out how SPH Media is preparing for the future as media companies around the world transform their century old business models in a digital world. We also want to talk about the rise in news consumption through social media platforms and what that means for traditional media. Also on the agenda – how the rise in social media usage changes the way mainstream media outlets create, promote and distribute their news stories. On Under the Radar, Money Matters’ finance presenter Chua Tian Tian posed these questions to Chan Yeng Kit, CEO, SPH Media.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

For one, it's no longer passe to be fluent in your mother tongue, say Xi Ying and Aishwarya. If the Berita Harian news article is anything to go by, the use of the Malaysian identity debate is a poor strategy if it's relegated to the patterns, embellishment, motifs, and decorations on skyscrapers.Scraping at the bottom of the barrel in terms of ideas to debate about, it is disappointing in the least, that the debate on the Malaysian identity is actually to advocate for mega-big projects for local architects. There is so much more to debate and discuss regarding Malaysian architectural identity and we need to be more critical to get the right attention from the Government or the general public. © 2023 Talk Architecture, Author: Naziaty Mohd YaacobThe image is from Universiti Teknologi Petronas Library in 2023 (Taken by Naziaty Mohd Yaacob) Support the showDo subscribe for premium content and special features which will help to support and sustain Talk Architecture podcast on a more in-depth explanation on design thesis and processes. According to a recent news report by Berita Harian, some development projects have started at Bukit Persekutuan or Federal Hill. As Malaysia continues our path towards becoming an aged society, whose responsibility is it to ensure that the needs of older adults - be it financial, physical or emotional - are met? In a report by Berita Harian last week, Datuk Siti Zailah Mohd Yusoff, the deputy minister for women, family and community development, said that sending one's parents to a residential care facility should be a last resort. She also added that the government spends about RM900 million a year to provide financial aid and care to the elderly. But is the concept of filial piety enough to ensure well-being of older adults in the years to come? Consultant geriatrician Prof Dr Tan Maw Pin from Universiti Malaya weighs in on how we need to empower older adults to be more independent.Image credit: Shutterstock
In this episode, you'll hear: The difference between Showcasing and Showing Off THE step to take if you want to be visible online & get media features like I had If you've been wondering what is the difference between showcase and showing off your achievements, this post is written for you. I've been in that dilemma before so I know that it can get confusing. Whenever I speak to women during my Feminine CEO Chat, I hear some common requirements to business that they set for themselves: "I don't want to have my face to the business" "I want to quit my job like yesterday to start my business, but I don't want my bosses or colleagues to know about my business" "I am a private person and I don't like to share about my life to my business, and vice versa" Here's the thing. If I said yes to all the pseudo requirements above, I wouldn't have been able to launch a purpose-driven business like Fempreneur Secrets and my video production company. These are just limiting beliefs we set in our own minds that really prevents us from moving forward. This week was one interesting journey for me. Over the weekend, I was featured on AsiaOne. Then, this same article was picked up again by HerWorld Singapore and The Asian Parent. Concurrently, I was invited to talk about gender equality in my own personal life on Channel 8. If you're based in Singapore, you know how HARD it is for a minority to appear on these media. My face was on the banners for all these features, and I was okay. Because this was a win for women in my community. This is not my achievement but a mark of success for minority women in Singapore who dress and look like me. I've been positioned at the headline banner, proving to you that it is more than possible to appear in mainstream media. Well, why am I sharing with you this? There is a BIG difference between showcasing and showing off. By definition to show off is to "behave in a way that is intended to attract attention or admiration, and that other people often find annoying". Isn't it interesting how Cambridge Dictionary would define this? Showcase on the other hand is is "to show the best qualities or parts of something". What is the difference then? You can be showing the same thing, but one can be seen as being a show off, and the other being a showcase. It all boils down to the intention and the way this was being presented. For example, Audrey and Liz have both purchased a car. On her social media, Audrey would pose in front of her car and mention her car whenever the opportunity arises. Audrey would check her number of likes, comments and general praises coming from her social media within the first hour of sharing. She repeats this behaviour whenever possible. The intention here is to get attention. Liz on the other hand shared about her purchase on the day of her key collection. She shared it once more when her family of 5 was able to sit comfortably in one vehicle, without having to be separated because of the safe distancing measures. And she has not shared about her car since. The intention here is to share her joy and achievement without the need for attention. She's simply marking her achievement, and leaving it there. To her, whoever knows, knows. That is showcasing So, it is clear that showcasing is the better option for your business. It leaves your organisation with a strong and lasting impression, giving your potential clients confidence to connect with you. Of course, showcasing is not necessarily easy. It can take years before you get noticed by mainstream media. I was first featured on my community papers and have been featured many times by the same community papers. I was joking to my husband that one day, Berita Harian would no longer call me for media interviews because I've been featured too many times! Back in 2019, I had my first media feature on Borneo Bulletin and was being interviewed on Progresif Radio in Brunei. That shaped the journey forward towards being picked up for media interviews. But I have to say, my very first interview was on a Podcast show called Hijab Forum. You can catch my interview there. The episode took almost a year before it was published. In between the time of the interview to the time it was published, I was being interviewed by many other podcast shows. The reality is that being featured on Podcast Shows is a great beginning to your career or business visibility. There are over 18.5 million episodes from over 520,000 active podcast shows all over the world and in over 100 difference languages! There is bound to be a show that wants to feature the amazing work that you do! Before you could get on those shows, you need to have what I like to call the Magic One Sheet! With just one page, you can get featured on shows you want to be associated with. We all know that 2020 wasn't the best year, but it certainly had its fair share of great memories. We have been with our podcast for 3 years, but 2020 was the official year we began running Fempreneur Secrets as a business. Here's a tribute to our 2020 In this episode, you'll hear about: Our honest truth about running Fempreneur Secrets this 2020 Some of our future plans for Fempreneur Secrets Here's a tribute to our 2020 After I recorded this episode, my team and I went through the year's statistics to see how we can grow for 2021. As this was undeniably our very first official year, we did not expect a lot of big numbers. To our surprise, we had great results this year. While we honestly can improve in our revenue generation, we always remember our MISSION and seeing these numbers are truly inspiring for 2021. 420 Entrepreneurs Groomed We didn't want to leave our business future to chance. We went out of the way to reach out to organisations who wanted to support entrepreneurial movements. We were blessed with the contract to train self-employed persons who wanted to improve their business. Throughout the year, we have collectively groomed 420 entrepreneurs (men, women and others). 140 Hours Spent Training Entrepreneurs The 420 entrepreneurs above spent more than 140 hours with us, gaining clarity in their business, planning a strategy for their digital marketing efforts and even learning how to collaborate with one another. We've also spent time flying from Singapore to Brunei to train qualified leaders in their companies to be better marketers with “intrapreneurship” skills within them. 5 Media Mentions For a company as young as ours, we never anticipated having had multiple media mentions. In March, we were interviewed by Borneo Bulletin and Progresif Radio. In May, we were picked up by Singapore media, Detik (under BERITA Mediacorp) with our first TV Interview. Just a few weeks after that, we were interviewed by Marketing in Asia as a feature on their online publication. In August, we were picked up by Berita Harian, a local newspaper While these are the 5 media mentions we had, I also had the opportunity to be interviewed on Podcast shows and Facebook LIVEs of fellow entrepreneurs in Singapore and the rest of the world. 15 Women Entrepreneurs Interviewed As you may already know, we began our journey with Fempreneur Secrets Podcast. When lockdown or quarantine or Circuit Breaker was put into force in June, I began Fearless Fempreneur LIVE Show where I picked the minds of talented, skilled and fearless women entrepreneurs in Singapore and beyond. I had a blast learning from each and every single one of them, no matter how long they have been in business. We did interview more than 15 women entrepreneurs, but these 15 were the ones whose episodes were published officially. The rest will be published from January 2021 onwards. 5 Webinar & Keynote Presentations I must say, this was by-far the most exciting experience for me. Beginning Fempreneur Secrets, I knew I wanted to touch as many lives as I could. So, I didn't pass off on any speaking opportunities. I began the year with 2 webinars done for Freminear and WEdu International. I had 2 private webinars which I can't mention, and 1 Keynote Presentation for HultPrize Competition, Rajshahi University. That Keynote just took place last 25 December while we were resting for the holidays. We are not going to stop We know we are on the right track to achieve our mission. That's exactly why we want to invite you to Be part of this amazing community It's time to become the FEARLESS FEMPRENEUR you are meant to be. Stop the dreaming and start the doing.
