WARNING: This show has a running theme of discussions of oral sex all throughout. Because we're stupid. Don't listen if you're not old enough to buy an explicit album. Hi, everyone - we're back after what ended up being a VERY long April of... nonsense, to put it in a word. A break was needed and a break was had, and now we're back to our grind of anime... well, nonsense, again. But to come back after some time away, we have to take our time with the inundation of information on display, so this will be a bit of everything: the best and worst of the winter season (a month late), the announcement of STEEL BALL RUN being real, the Tenchi Muyo comic Kickstarter reaching its goal in barely any time at all, some free offerings on Pluto TV, the new Mamoru Hosoda movie getting BIG plans for its theatrical rollout, Toonami getting THINGS this coming weekend, and a good bit of home video releases coming out in the summer - including one very highly demanded release in the form of CHAINSAW MAN, AT LONG LAST, from... VIZ??? Because sure, why not? Also, yes, we're going to yell about the Crunchyroll Anime Awards nominations. Because it's easy pickings. intro - real-world kvetching and Sinners gushing 21:53 - the best and worst of winter ( 41:51 - once again, the CR Anime Awards nominees 1:30:15 - some news items of note (Steel Ball Run, Toonami additions, Tenchi Muyo comic Kickstarter, Scarlet/Columbia Pictures) 1:50:51 - a lot of upcoming home video releases (Anime Limited surprises, Wind Breaker, Call of the Night, Solo Leveling, Chainsaw Man) Tenchi Muyo Kickstarter - https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/armigerentertainment/tenchi-muyo-original-omnibus-edition Apple Podcasts – https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/podcastona/id1348141210?mt=2 Spotify – https://open.spotify.com/show/2JZLO3LfoeHepomejTw4TP iHeartRadio – https://www.iheart.com/podcast/256-podcastona-43099114/ TuneIn – https://tunein.com/podcasts/Podcasts/PodcastONA-p1249922/ As always, check out surrealresolution.com for more content, updates on the show, our continued news posts, reviews, and our fellow podcasts.
AnimeJapan has come and gone... a while ago, with how late this show is, but with it comes a lot of big announcements of a VERY big summer season coming up, and we're going to lay out the details for what's poised to be a rom-com-heavy July along with the usual updates and menageries that the strange and bizarre anime industry has on offer, like a weird pseudo-incestuous corporate offspring, HiDive losing and gaining some shows this month, Netflix viewer data, a new paid 'adult' platform, and most importantly of all: GAY ANGEL TWINKS. Thanks for your patience with this show. No, this is not an April Fools Day joke. Things have been pretty slow and rough for a lot of outside reasons and circumstances that have prevented our next episode from being up in a timely manner. Burnout and exhaustion sucks. The next episode - AnimeJapan 2025 - will be up later in the week. New episodes will likely resume in May. Thank you for your time and patience. In Memory Dave Mallow (1948-2025) George Lowe (1957-2025) The ides of "Smarch" are upon us and they've gotten off to a stupid start. Alas, we're still here doing our thing to help alleviate the continued existential dread we all have to deal with in the world. We've got Amazon getting back into the anime simulcast game in a big way, Crunchyroll trying to make good with a big partner of theirs, Viz kickstarting convention season with a pair of sizable announcements of their own, and some dates for some upcoming seasons that will - at the very least - get a reaction out of folks. Also, for the next little while, these episode titles will borrow from Space Ghost Coast to Coast as an ongoing tribute. Yes, the world may be on fire and/or a frigid wasteland at the same time, but we're still here and still kicking. And to prove that there is still some good in the world (along with football YouTuber Tom Grossi raising over a million dollars for charity in one week) there's a very long-awaited announcement: NO. 6 IS GETTING A NEW NOVEL. Let's hope that the reunion will, indeed, be coming for those boys. And along with that, we have the news of BOCCHI THE SECOND SEASON happening, Masaaki Yuasa starting up a new studio, an hour's worth of book announcements from several publishers (even from Tokyopop, but just briefly), Fate/stay night airing on a... *curious* cable TV channel, some ripples in the Gundam pipeline, the recent AnimEigo "town hall" announcements, and a whole lot of dumb shenanigans to help distract all of you from the real world at large. And if all else fails, just wait for the Canada gooses to begin their attack. It's been... quite a month for a lot of us. For a lot of reasons. For the foreseeable future, we're all going to be on our own for a while, and we're all going to be depending on each other for help, support, and even survival. And we're all probably going to need more time to ourselves when we need a break from everything, hence why this show is going up so late. Again, it's been "a month" for the ages. But, as long as we all have breath in our lungs and a drive to distract, we'll keep doing these shows for all of you. If only because we all need a break from everything, once in a while. We've got Discotek Day announcements, some thoughts on the top shows of 2024, GKIDS playing with big boy money, Macross finally going up on Disney+ (and Hulu), and more random tangents all over the place. intro - we're all on our own together 9:18 - Discotek Day announcements 1:05:31 - ANN's top 10 anime of 2024 1:19:52 - main-ish news items 2:16:18 - home video releases 1:19:52 - Miles Thomas' ANN report on isekai 1:33:52 - a lot of Viz book announcements 1:40:51 - the dub cast for Sakamoto Days 1:49:25 - Netflix gets Ippo 1:51:26 - Hulu/Disney+ FINALLY gets Macross up 1:55:01 - Sony bounces back at Bloomberg with… a new Crunchyroll manga app (and other projects) 2:06:34 - Witch Watch getting a theatrical premiere in March 2:11:41 - GKIDS gets BIG BOY MONEY with Gundam (GQuuuuuux) 2:14:51 - Signal.MD merging with Production I.G 2:16:18 - Sentai April releases (Princess Principal, Urusei Yatsura) 2:21:35 - March and April home video releases (Undead Unluck, Ghost Cat Anzu, MHA You're Next) 2:26:41 - Crunchyroll April releases (Shangri-La Frontier, Berserk of Gluttony) Apple Podcasts – https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/podcastona/id1348141210?mt=2 Spotify – https://open.spotify.com/show/2JZLO3LfoeHepomejTw4TP iHeartRadio – https://www.iheart.com/podcast/256-podcastona-43099114/ TuneIn – https://tunein.com/podcasts/Podcasts/PodcastONA-p1249922/ As always, check out surrealresolution.com for more content, updates on the show, our continued news posts, reviews, and our fellow podcasts.
NOTE: parts of the audio from the first 34 minutes of this episode are missing due to technical difficulties. As 2024 comes to a close, we have one last show as all of the stars seemed to align just right with the added benefit of a very hefty gift bestowed to all of us from Bloomberg - a not-so-lovely exposé on Crunchyroll and their corporate culture that we spent 45 minutes dissecting and lambasting. Quite the added extra for a show that just supposed to be about Jump Festa, but yes, the major happenings from Jump Festa are here as well, from the new changes to One Piece to the next stretch of My Hero Academia and even some not-so-confirmed promises from the ever-so-slow and procrastinatory overlords at MAPPA. There's also some talk about some upcoming new seasons for some fan favorites and one more book roundup for the year, but we all know why you're here - it's for the Crunchyroll talk. Again, it's quite a doozy, and a hell of a doozy to close the year out on. We'll see you back here in the new year for more fun shenanigans in our ever present strive for survival - mainly on the "bluer skies" of the internet, if you know you know. intro - Sonic 3 and the Timecop paradox 10:20 - business talk 1:06:38 - other main stories 1:24:00 - Jump Festa 2024 1:58:51 - home video releases 10:20 - Toho to acquire 19.7% stake in Studio Orange 15:02 - Sony to acquire majority 10% stake on Kadokawa 21:42 - the Bloomberg report on Crunchyroll and their MANY terrible issues 1:06:38 - a lot of stuff went up on Crunchyroll with no notice (Golden Kamuy OVAs, Kizumonogatari, given Hiiragi Mix) 1:07:47 - Rascal/Bunny Girl dub and more coming to Hulu in January 1:09:10 - Toonami Rewind is shutting down 1:10:02 - several second seasons announced and confirmed (DANDADAN, Ranma, Skip & Loafer, My Dress-Up Darling, Magilumiere) 1:12:28 - AnimEigo launches a new sub-label 1:13:41 - one more Yen Press book roundup for the year 1:22:11 - THIS JUST IN: Mamoru Hosoda's new movie is announced 1:23:23 - JOJODAY coming in April 1:24:00 - One Piece gets a problematic new Franky and a late new time slot 1:30:28 - MHA Vigilantes and season 8 announced for 2025 1:39:33 - Kaiju No. 8 and SPY x FAMILY new seasons coming 2025 1:40:25 - Witch Watch previewed, starts in April 1:42:36 - Chained Soldier gets a new studio and new cast members 1:43:48 - Mission: Yozakura Family season 2 coming 2026 1:44:46 - Aharen-san wa Hakarenai season 2 coming in the spring 1:45:35 - more details on Takopi's Original Sin 1:47:39 - the MAPPA section (Hell's Paradise and Chainsaw Man) 1:58:31 - Sentai March releases (Ragna Crimson) 1:59:42 - Crunchyroll March releases (Shangri-La Frontier, 100 Girlfriends, SPY x FAMILY, Jujutsu Kaisen) Apple Podcasts – https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/podcastona/id1348141210?mt=2 Spotify – https://open.spotify.com/show/2JZLO3LfoeHepomejTw4TP iHeartRadio – https://www.iheart.com/podcast/256-podcastona-43099114/ TuneIn – https://tunein.com/podcasts/Podcasts/PodcastONA-p1249922/ As always, check out surrealresolution.com for more content, updates on the show, our continued news posts, reviews, and our fellow podcasts.
Christmastime is almost here, and there's a Gundam coming down everyone's stocking in the new year! A pleasant surprise, for sure, and a good tiding of cheer in the wake of Crunchyroll changing the rules of their "awards" show in totally inconspicuous fashion that has nothing to do with a certain show airing this year about aliens and ghosts. And along with that, there are some fun movies coming out (and some that are not-as-fun), some notable dub casts announced for the new year, the Rascal dub situation is FINALLY mostly sorted out after an entire year, and a look at how the manga sales went for the year and who's at the top of the mountain for 2024 - along with much more, with one more show to come before the new year. It's going to be Jump Festa. Call it a late Christmas gift from all of us to all of you. EDITOR'S NOTE: Well, this took a lot of time to get together, didn't it? Apologies for the delay, this was recorded over a week ago and it's been a particularly rough week, so that's why it took so long to get out. So… things may be a bit rough and not make sense, and the future may not be as bright as we'd all like it to, but we're going to keep doing what we do for all of you as well as all of us - if only to serve as a momentary distraction from the world around us. The fun and shenanigans will continue, even if the real world reminds us how cold it may be, but we're going to fight the good fight going forward, be it big or small. And so should all of you since we're all going to be in this together. Preferably on the platform of "bluer skies," too, hint hint. Yes, it's a wrestling reference given that the only two on here for this show have names that start with A. And yes, this show is late, once again due to a more-than-hectic week. Apologies for the not-great scheduling, but we're working in the background to get things more stable. Also, there's a thing happening on November 5, so maybe do it either on that date or before - you all know what the thing is, it doesn't need to be said. Anyway, we've got an abbreviated recap of the summer season, thoughts on Look Back and MHA: You're Next, a major shift for GKIDS, and the biggest change to the One Piece anime yet - that's all in the first hour, and there's plenty from NYCC to dive into, both good and not-as-good. First, yes, this show is very late. Blame a long work weekend and a few days dealing with COVID (remember that? it's still around) for this show being later than it should have been. But we have plenty of happenings and goings-ons from Anime NYC to talk about, along with the winner of the Look Back sweepstakes, a major deal for One Piece in the UK, and the long-awaited and long-belated summer dub cast rundown - perfect for the season almost ending, we know. (thumbnail courtesy of Don East) Yep, it's a shorter mid-convention show here, going up while Anime NYC is in progress in... well, New York, duh. We'll be back next time with a fuller show talking all of those wild convention hijinks, but for now we've got some very interesting developments with Weekly Shonen Jump, in the return of a legendary title coming at the cost of the sudden ending of another title that most definitely exists. Also, nobody wants to let Attack on Titan die and we're very annoyed by that. All of that and a bit more coming your way in this breezier show right here, enjoy it and enjoy the rest of Anime NYC. In Memoriam Rachael Lillis 1978-2024 So, a lot has happened in the month since our last episode. Some good, some bad, some downright insane, and not everything involved someone who may or may not have had coitus with a couch like a total weirdo. But we're back, we're easing through things for the time being, and we're running through the big details for the new Ranma 1/2 anime (starting in TWO MONTHS), all of the goodies from Otakon, Devilman fans eating supremely well, and one of the biggest leaks we'e sen in a very long time. And here we are, running down the major bits and pieces from Anime Expo once again, all while the industry is threatened more now than ever in recent memory of suffering from a bursting bubble. It's best to enjoy things while we still can, but that does include plenty of upcoming projects like... more Fire Force and Blue Exorcist... but there's more TRIGUN and Panty & Stocking coming so it all balances out in the end. And that's not withstanding the folks from RWBY getting a new place of employment at Viz Media, the newest arc of One Piece getting ready for its dub premiere and the long-awaited finish line of "simuldub" inching closer and closer, and even a new film project from Shoji Kawamori in the works as well, along with plenty more to dive into and discuss. There's a lot to get to as we're in the heat of convention season, so for this "landmark" 175th episode, we're... going to do the same as usual. Except it's molten hot outside, so that's what makes this a bit more special. I think. A little bit of FYI for those who are curious: most shows we do are initially recorded anywhere from 2-3 hours in one call, though sometimes it can be a little longer than 3 hours, while the editing process can take anywhere from 6 to 10 hours to scroll through everything and make the necessary cuts and edits in several editing sessions. So if anyone's wondering why these shows take a while to come out, that's why. It's a one-man editing operation on a MacBook Pro, at the end of the day. We'll be back to talk SDCC and Otakon very soon. ntro - happy 175th, the heat is still unbearable 4:04 - pre/post-AX news items 57:15 - Anime Expo 2024: signs of an unstable industry 1:04:12 - the BIG announcement(s): BLUE BOX + NETFLIX 1:09:55 - Day 1 1:47:50 - Day 2 2:28:58 - Day 3 4:04 - Demon Slayer going back to the theaters 15:12 - the new Rose of Versailles film is a MAPPA production 20:37 - Magic Knight Rayearth 30th anniversary anime project announced 24:06 - Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha 20th anniversary movies re-edit announced 26:36 - Kisemonogatari compilation film in theaters in August 29:13 - Kadokawa acquires Doga Kobo 35:04 - Science SARU producing SANDA series from BEASTARS creator 37:10 - Crunchyroll fixes review bombing by disabling EVERY comment section 42:49 - THAT scene in Rent-a-Girlfriend will soon be upon us 46:05 - coming to SDCC: Adult Swim vs. AEW 48:29 - some Toonami updates: Sailor Moon and… something else 55:16 - BOCCHI THE CASSETTE TAPE 56:39 - late from Japan Expo: DEVILMAN CRYBABY BLU-RAY IS COMING AX Day 1: 1:09:55 - TRIGUN STARGAZE 1:13:01 - NEW Panty & Stocking 1:15:12 - Witch Hat Atelier 1:22:15 - Garden of Remembrance 1:24:11 - Batman Ninja sequel film 1:26:03 - Shoji Kawamori directing a new original film 1:27:01 - Kodansha USA 1:44:05 - BEASTARS season 4 1:45:21 - Grotesque AX Day 2: 1:47:50 - Viz Media acquires RWBY 1:54:53 - J-Novel Club 2:06:53 - Yen Press 2:20:27 - DENPA/Kuma 2:24:17 - Bleach: Rebirth of Souls 2:27:42 - One Piece Egghead Arc dub 2:28:58 - Tokyopop still sucks 2:30:09 - Uzumaki dub cast 2:32:07 - Special Kid Factory 2:33:37 - Bleach: TYBW 2:37:03 - MHA: You're Next release details 2:42:50 - new Blue Exorcist and Black Butler seasons 2:43:38 - Crunchyroll 2:51:43 - AX Cinema Nights Apple Podcasts – https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/podcastona/id1348141210?mt=2 Spotify – https://open.spotify.com/show/2JZLO3LfoeHepomejTw4TP iHeartRadio – https://www.iheart.com/podcast/256-podcastona-43099114/ TuneIn – https://tunein.com/podcasts/Podcasts/PodcastONA-p1249922/ Where to find us: Alex – @AuraOfAzure, https://xandersmachinations.wordpress.com Andrew – @MangaMan9000, youtube.com/DubTalk Jet – @Divinenega, https://thenerdyabyss.wordpress.com As always, check out surrealresolution.com for more content, and follow @SurrealReso for more updates on the show, our continued news posts, reviews, and our fellow podcasts.
It's the last stop before Anime Expo, and with it comes a smaller platter of stuff to talk about, but a platter nonetheless - and since that Urusei Yatsura anime revival worked so well, why don't we do it again with Ranma 1/2? It'll be... something, that's for sure. There's also a not-so-great update on the recent business dealings of Kadokawa, HiDive getting back into business with Hulu, the end of My Hero Academia drawing near, and an early best-and-worst of an admittedly middling spring season that had the real best show of the season be unavailable due to a return of Toei's bag-fumbling skills. C'est la vie, as some say. We'll catch you all back here next time for the AX goods. Yes, this episode is very late. Life sometimes gets in the way of getting this show done. Nevertheless, there's quite a bit to talk about as we are in the "pre-Anime Expo" buildup, namely some big moves from Science SARU and GKIDS, a good amount of manga and light novel synopsis reading, a deep dive on Netflix's anime data, and the (hopefully) permanent financial demise of GAINAX. All of that, and so much more to come both in this show and in the coming weeks. Call it the prelude to the madness in LA. P.S. the Attack on Titan discussion episode that was promised last year? It's cancelled. Sorry for that, too. Just imagine all of us screaming for 2 hours straight and that's the discussion we would have had. intro - a VERY late show and vidya ranting 11:45 - main stories 1:00:26 - announcements and updates 2:06:00 - home video releases 11:45 - GAINAX files for bankruptcy 21:56 - Science SARU acquired by TOHO, producing a new Ghost in the Shell series in 2026 32:34 - GKIDS acquires Angel's Egg 36:04 - GKIDS acquires home video rights for DAN DA DAN (and ARCANE) 41:34 - SCOOP CONFIRMED: Sakamoto Days is REAL 44:07 - Gachiakuta anime announced for 2025, produced at BONES 49:07 - a Netflix anime data deep dive 55:35 - Attack on Titan… the MUSICAL? 1:00:26 - Ishura dub is FINALLY up on Hulu 1:04:39 - Suicide Squad Isekai premieres on Max… AND Hulu 1:07:40 - Sailor Moon Cosmos coming to Netflix in August 1:10:01 - The Imaginary (Studio Ponoc) dub cast revealed 1:12:00 - Delicious in Dungeon season 2 announced 1:14:37 - Re:ZERO season 3 premiere to be movie-length 1:18:59 - SPY x FAMILY season 3 announced 1:21:15 - Mr. Osomatsu season 4 announced 1:23:34 - One Piece Egghead arc dub premiere happening at Anime Expo 1:26:30 - some more J-Novel Club cringe 1:37:16 - some more Seven Seas licenses 1:51:22 - some new Viz manga licenses 2:03:00 - Crunchyroll locks for summer and beyond 2:06:00 - MACROSS PLUS ultimate edition out on 9/30 2:09:07 - Dragonball Super LE reprint out on 7/30 2:10:08 - more Aniplex July releases (Rascal, Yamada Lv999) 2:11:37 - Otaku no Video out on 10/8 2:12:12 - Sentai August releases (Helck, Executioner/Way of Life) Apple Podcasts – https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/podcastona/id1348141210?mt=2 Spotify – https://open.spotify.com/show/2JZLO3LfoeHepomejTw4TP iHeartRadio – https://www.iheart.com/podcast/256-podcastona-43099114/ TuneIn – https://tunein.com/podcasts/Podcasts/PodcastONA-p1249922/ Where to find us: Alex – @AuraOfAzure, https://xandersmachinations.wordpress.com Andrew – @MangaMan9000, youtube.com/DubTalk Jet – @Divinenega, https://thenerdyabyss.wordpress.com As always, check out surrealresolution.com for more content, and follow @SurrealReso for more updates on the show, our continued news posts, reviews, and our fellow podcasts.
Well, then. After taking an unexpected month-long break from this show, we are FINALLY back and we are FINALLY whole again with Andrew back in the saddle to give all of the shenanigans that have been sorely missed in his absence. This includes running down the spring dub casts (finally) and reading some cringy light novel summaries, and it also includes talking about some pretty cool things like a Sakamoto Days project for Netflix getting leaked out, TOONAMI REWIND on Fridays, a positive tease for 86 from VIZ of all companies, a scintillating sell for the new Code Geass project, and the curious case of Dead Dead Demon's Dededede Destruction going from movies to a TV series with zero notice - same with Crunchyroll picking it up and giving it a dub ALSO with zero notice. Since our last episode, Cody Rhodes "finished the story" at WrestleMania to become the undisputed WWE Champion, and that's good. Sadly, also since our last episode, the overlords at MAPPA decided to finish another story by axing a long-awaited movie project after years of nothing, and that's bad. Things aren't fun, right now, and with that comes a bit of a lull in everything as this is one of the quickest episodes we've done in a very long time - there's some news about Embracer Group to talk about, some updates on that live-action One Punch Man movie project, some brief chatter about SPY x FAMILY Code: White, and talk of Netflix adding some more MANIME to their lineup next moth. Again, it's a pretty quick show, but things should be a bit longer next time when we're at full strength again. And if you need something longer to listen to, our friends and colleagues over at Dub Talk have their 2024 DUBBIE AWARDS show up, so check it out over on their YouTube channel and in your podcast platform of choice. P.S. yes this thumbnail gag has been used before. As of this episode going up, we're in the middle of WrestleMania weekend, and that means many things to many people, and it means hoping that a certain someone finally “finishes his story” on Sunday so that we can all be done hearing about it. But for us, the grind continues as we put a bow on the winter season and lament the continued cannibalism of the anime industry with a tale of what happened the last time a company or two or three went under. It was a dark time. But we also have a recap of the major announcements from this year's AnimeJapan, all the good and bad and “what is this” because we all don't quite know everything new coming out, and also a case where ALL the monkey's paws have curled in regards to Macross… and Disney. Convention season has also begun, so play it smart and safe if you're going to one. intro - did you all stay up for Smiling Puppet Friends? 6:24 - the best and worst of the winter season 21:19 - main stories 45:15 - the AnimeJapan 2024 rundown 1:08:43 - other announcements 1:19:12 - home video releases 21:19 - Funimation is officially dead; a brief history of the 2007 home video crash* 36:37 - Apothecary Diaries creator indicted on charges of tax evasion 38:31 - Dragonball Super manga on indefinite hiatus 39:27 - GKIDS acquires four Mamoru Hosoda catalogue films for release 40:58 - Macross catalogue is headed to Disney+ later in 2024 44:31 - a new Sgt. No jokes, no hyperbole, nothing over-exaggerated - this "awards show" needs to go away and never come back. The corporate overlords at Crunchyroll can put together all of the window dressing they want, but if these events are going to continue awarding themselves and ignoring what the people at AniTrendz and Anime Corner and r/anime put the time and research into awarding then they'll be talked about in an equal manner - with corporate-focused cynicism and exhausted apathy with a whole bunch of "whatevers" to it. This bonus audio was recorded on a day off to just get the corporate nonsense from earlier this (Saturday) morning out of the way while also highlighting the Anime Corner and r/anime awards and honors for their much better and (usually) more thought-out selections. Go to the people and leave the corporations to the side. We'll be back next time to talk about more pressing matters involving Crunchyroll - namely, THAT interview from The Verge. It won't be fun. As we inch closer and closer out of the winter doldrums, we find more and more cases of rabid internet discourse popping up and it just makes us ask one thing: whyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy. We don't like talking about these things, but alas, it is our duty to discuss certain elements of discussion with these topics, namely the topic of what NOT to do when you're working on a major anime dub production (yes, THAT) as well as the unknown future of a post-Funimation world with that side of the service set to shut down and sunset on April 2nd. Not a very fun time, right now. But we can take solace in the fact that the five-year "LOLsuit" saga seems to finally be at an end, AnimEigo is under new and well-known ownership, and Crunchyroll has more than four Blu-ray releases set to come out in May for the first time in a while. See, it's not ALL bad, it's just sorta bad. But we'll all wade through the murky waters together, and our good friend Sketch is back to fill in for this treacherous journey. P.S. March may be a bit spotty with shows due to some outside circumstances. HEADS UP: some of the audio is a little crunchy. Weird things happened with some of the recording. We'll try to not let that happen next time. The sluggish days of winter are here and we're all feeling it around here. We're all a bit tired and we're still trying to wade through our shifting schedules, so pardon any additional dust around here as we work to make the best of an ever-evolving situation. In the meantime, while there are some serious matters to discuss here, there are also a bit of good matters worth talking about, a large amount of dub cast for the season, and hopefully the first bit of the END of a five-year saga that's so unbelievably stupid it's not worth going all the way back to for discussion. Let's just laugh at the disgraced sex pest who will owe half a million dollars to those whom he attempted to silence into submission and committed career suicide as a result of it. Welcome to 2024 and welcome to a new year of this stilly dog-and-pony show we do every so often. We're back in a big way, basically putting together two whole shows in one, recounting the fall season and 2023 as a whole while looking forward to "award season" in one certain aspect and going through the latest pants-filling announcements from Discotek media - one such announcement was very "berserk" in a way, hint hint. And along the way, we've got news on the next show premiering on Toonami next month, how much money the Macross II Kickstarter raised, Monogatari making a comeback, and even a pair of pretty *ecchi* shows making their way down the pipeline. You heard that right. To go along with this, there is also an update for the future scheduling of this show - going forward, there will be no set schedule for when the show will go up besides "it'll be up when it's up," and that's mostly due to our very varied and ever-evolving schedules conflicting with our fun passion hobby of talking anime amongst one another for a few hours every few weeks. So just keep a look out on your podcast platforms of choice (shoutout to Overcast, for one) and on the main site for this show for when new episodes will be up and available. Thanks for reading. As 2023 comes to an end, you all may have varying feelings about the year as a whole. For some it was good, for others it was bad, and for the rest it was just very... meh. But we hope to leave the year for all of you on a better note, namely with about two and a half hours of anime discussion to listen to while you're all doing things during your Christmas holiday. Namely, a good bit of wild announcements from Jump Festa across the board, some interesting bits from Netflix regarding what people were watching this year, some upcoming second and third and fourth seasons recently announced, and even a good bit of news for Macross fans - the Macross II Kickstarter is live, so go to it and prepare your wallets for that sweet goodness to come next year. After a long Thanksgiving weekend, the grind continues onward - if only for one more week as Anime NYC was quite the event to look back on as opposed to the litany of terrible news we have to go through on this episode. We're all really just limping to the end of the year, in a way. But we carry on, if only for our own sense of self-worth and in honor of the greatest man who ever lived: Kento Nanami. May he find his happiness on the beaches of Malaysia for the rest of time, and may the psychopathic executives of MAPPA find the exact opposite. intro - 2023 stinks but Scott Pilgrim is good 9:26 - main stories 40:55 - announcements and updates 51:20 - Anime NYC rundown 2:18:53 - home video releases 9:26 - MAPPA animators on the verge of mutiny? 23:59 - Kadokawa still planning world domination 26:22 - (old news) Hulu to be Disney-only by 2024 29:56 - HiDive going through some… changes? 32:28 - One Piece Day at SoFi Stadium is a thing 35:30 - Togashi's last-case scenario ending for Hunter x Hunter 40:55 - Blue Box anime confirmed 45:25 - Legend of Kurokos gets another season 46:54 - Cherry Magic anime set for winter 48:57 - Zom 100 comes back on Christmas Day 51:20 - Anime NYC preamble 59:27 - Crunchyroll announcements 1:10:33 - surviving through cringy J-Novel Club press copy 1:26:57 - Denpa Books 1:28:55 - Kodansha 1:36:26 - Yen Press 1:44:40 - Sand Land confirmed for Disney+ Hulu 1:46:07 - Great Pretender gets a movie… with some caveats 2:01:40 - Lycoris Recoil coming to Toonami in January 2:04:20 - good news for Panty & Stocking 2:05:21 - the new BONES project and more revealed 2:14:41 - Gurren Lagann movies getting theatrical showings in January… with an English dub 2:18:53 - ANOTHER screwup on the Rascal Does Not Dream Blu-ray release revealed 2:26:16 - a $550 Code Geass collector's edition is a thing 2:30:50 - Crunchyroll February home video releases 2:35:45 - Sentai February home video releases Apple Podcasts – https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/podcastona/id1348141210?mt=2 Google Play – https://podcasts.google.com/feed/aHR0cDovL3d3dy5wb2RjYXN0b25hLnN1cnJlYWxyZXNvbHV0aW9uLmNvbS9mZWVkL3BvZGNhc3Q Spotify – https://open.spotify.com/show/2JZLO3LfoeHepomejTw4TP iHeartRadio – https://www.iheart.com/podcast/256-podcastona-43099114/ TuneIn – https://tunein.com/podcasts/Podcasts/PodcastONA-p1249922/ Where to find us: Alex – @AuraOfAzure, https://xandersmachinations.wordpress.com Andrew – @MangaMan9000, youtube.com/DubTalk Jet – @Divinenega, https://thenerdyabyss.wordpress.com As always, check out surrealresolution.com for more content, and follow @SurrealReso for more updates on the show, our continued news posts, reviews, and our fellow podcasts.
Happy Black Friday and/or Small Business Saturday and/or Cyber Monday - the best time of the year for reckless spending on random stuff nobody really needs but the deals are just way too good to pass up - and to help bide the time while you're out shopping (or endlessly browsing Amazon) here's a very long best-of compilation of our past "Discotek Day" events for you all to listen and look back on... for nearly NINE HOURS. Now, in response to the question of "but WHY tho?" the answer is simple: sometimes some ideas are just dumb enough to work. This is nearly a half-gigabyte of audio that took up 22 gigabytes of project files to put together and it will serve as a fine resource of the wonderful madness that the people of Discotek Media give to all of us - to note, this is NOT sponsored in any way, we're just big fans of their work. Stay tuned for our next new episode coming up this weekend, talking Anime NYC and a whole lot more. November is here, the fall season is in full swing, and things have been pretty quiet for a bit all over the place, which means it's the right time for someone to screw up in spectacular fashion. There are not-so-kind words being sent out to a certain voice talent over how a certain recent situation played out, and our punches aren't being pulled in this case because WOW this was bad. But, in happier news, Toonami has things worth talking about again, (most of) the fall season dub casts are run down, we have a reminder that PLUTO is worth spending your time watching on Netflix, and Attack on Titan is finally ending this weekend... we hope. Not just for our sakes, but for the sakes of everyone at MAPPA dealing with a madman for a boss. It's a short show for once, too. Fancy that. We'll all bitch about the $550 Code Geass box of crap next time. intro - spooky season is now over 6:37 - main stories 1:15:24 - announcements and updates 1:21:44 - home video releases 6:37 - how NOT to handle a dub casting snafu (RE: Bleach) 39:03 - Toonami HAS THINGS (Demon Slayer and HD IGPX) 45:12 - Crunchyroll subscription channel now on Amazon Prime Video 48:28 - the fall 2023 dub cast rundown 1:11:29 - PLUTO is good, watch it 1:15:24 - Attack on Titan ENDS this weekend… with MORE coming???] 1:19:54 - Sentenced to Be a Hero anime coming… soon 1:21:44 - Aniplex December releases 1:23:22 - Stone Ocean Blu-ray in January Apple Podcasts – https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/podcastona/id1348141210?mt=2 Google Play – https://podcasts.google.com/feed/aHR0cDovL3d3dy5wb2RjYXN0b25hLnN1cnJlYWxyZXNvbHV0aW9uLmNvbS9mZWVkL3BvZGNhc3Q Spotify – https://open.spotify.com/show/2JZLO3LfoeHepomejTw4TP iHeartRadio – https://www.iheart.com/podcast/256-podcastona-43099114/ TuneIn – https://tunein.com/podcasts/Podcasts/PodcastONA-p1249922/ Where to find us: Alex – @AuraOfAzure, https://xandersmachinations.wordpress.com Andrew – @MangaMan9000, youtube.com/DubTalk Jet – @Divinenega, https://thenerdyabyss.wordpress.com Duelist – @HeartofSword75, youtube.com/DuelistG As always, check out surrealresolution.com for more content, and follow @SurrealReso for more updates on the show, our continued news posts, reviews, and our fellow podcasts.
Well THIS sure became a meaty show, didn't it? Between the offerings and goings-on at New York Comic Con, Crunchyroll doing a bit of good and QUITE a bit of bad (you all know what it is), and another fantastic Discotek Day event happening, there's quite a lot to get to in this show. There's also a neat rundown of the dub cast for The Boy and the Heron, a pair of curious manga anecdotes to take a laugh or two at, even more manga and light novel announcements, and ALL of the goods that Discotek brought to all of us last week. And yes, we get VERY blunt and serious in regards to one upcoming show's home video release and of how barebones it absolutely should not be. Don't make it a recurring thing, Crunchyroll. Next time? PLUTO. For this go-around, we've got a little bit of everything for everyone here - big announcements, business news, recapping a MID season, terrible bullcrap nobody likes, hilarious overreactions from light novel and manga announcements, and even a terrible correction to what we thought was something cool from the last show, only to find out it was all a multi-tiered mistake that was never going to happen to begin with. Such is life, in a way. But at least there's a cool Devil May Cry project coming soon, along with other weird and cool projects for Netflix coming as soon as this month - this is a reminder that we are mere weeks away from PLUTO. We will talk about it. And sadly, we also have to talk about the news regarding the status of Rightstuf - or rather, the lack thereof, going forward. It won't be fun. At least there's a Discotek Day happening next week along with NYCC. (Producer's note: this episode is late due to a very busy week. Apologies for the delay.) Have you all heard about the smash hit new shonen series Kagurabachi? It's gotten three anime seasons, two movies, and has sold one trillion copies of its manga - it's the new MORBIUS SWEEP... okay, jokes and memes aside, sometimes Morbius-meme-ing a series can work, but we'll see in the coming weeks and months if Kagurabachi has the legs to live on in the pages of Jump. And along with talking about that, there is good news for the future of One Piece on Netflix, a rundown of everything from the Aniplex Online Fest event, Demon Slayer and SPY x FAMILY getting Switch games that may or may not be deemed shovelware, and a rundown of Crunchyroll's fall simulcast slate... As was made famous on an episode of The Simpsons many years ago, it was the best of times and the BLURST of times. In the case of the former, it's the smashing success of One Piece on Netflix - and yes, it IS good - but in the latter, it's a crash-and-burn of a supposed upstart company with too much ambition and not enough capital. Such is life, in a way. As for what it all means for this show, it doesn't mean a whole lot, but this IS the shortest show we've done in quite a while as not a lot has been going on lately. The end of summer means things are slowing down a bit, but we'll be back next time for a meatier show. Otakon has come and gone, and in its wake... well, we think you all already know what happened. Quite a bit of things were brought to the table from Discotek, including some very unexpected good news in the form of absolute mental wizardry and devout dedication to the craft of Digimon - with one notable omission, of course. We're all pretty excited, too. And we made sure to dedicate some time to The First Slam Dunk and its amazing... well, everything, as well as the dub casts for a rather paltry summer season, some Macross updates that also came out at Otakon, and plenty of time spent tearing apart the people in charge at Bandai for trying to dictate the narrative of Gundam: The Witch From Mercury's finale - along with the rest of the world doing the same thing because they absolutely deserve it. P.S. we know Gear 5 happened. So who could have guessed that an actor strike would mean San Diego Comic-Con would end up being more like the SDCCs of old? With that, so too comes quite a bit of announcements, namely from the likes of Adult Swim and Crunchyroll as it relates to this program. We also take a brief look back at the spring season now that it's been over for a month, show our surprising optimism for the Netflix One Piece series with its new trailer, go through quite a bit of Dengeki Bunko event announcements, and try to make sense of a certain interview from a certain studio head on this edition of the show. All with our good friend Sketch filling in on very short notice, too. We'll be back next week to talk Otakon. Namely with one certain company's panel. It's that time of year again, when the convention season meets its apex in Los Angeles for the cluster-mess known as Anime Expo - where all of your dreams may not come true but there's bound to be some cool announcements. In the second of this two-part episode, we continue with the rest of the first day of AX with even MORE manga to go through, and afterwards we roam through the rest of the convention for some questionable discussions, curious yet head-scratching reveals, and a LOT of One Piece talk, both very good and very not-good. And it wouldn't be AX without a “one more thing” to tickle some folks' early-2010s Hot Topic itch with a certain series getting revived… because apparently someone asked for more Black Butler to be a thing. What else got announced? Tune in and find out. P.S. to the listeners: all of us have a zero-tolerance policy on BS rhetoric. Welcome to WRATH MONTH. Welcome to summer, where it's hot and muggy and probably storming three times a week. While you're all dealing with the humid heat, stay inside and enjoy our not-always-luminous voices going through the last bit of news bits before Anime Expo happens and we're all spending hours and hours dissecting every major announcement to come from it. We also talk about how great Across the Spider-Verse* is, how *meh* the third season of Demon Slayer really was, the vibes of the Netflix One Piece trailer, and how cool some video games can be when presented right. And we also go through how terrible union busting is in regards to one particular company we're all continually losing patience with. But at least Discotek Day is happening on Monday, so enjoy the fun shenanigans before AX next weekend. We'll be here to run everything down next time. *This was recorded before details regarding the production of Across the Spider-Verse were reported. None of us support excessive crunch. It's June, and that means certain grown-ass people will be throwing a conniption fit over everything and everyone. But for us here, that means only one month until Anime Expo, and also a bit of a lull until then, so we'll be spending the month looking around for some interesting stories to talk about. In this case, said stories of interest include a strange revelation of a Death Note MUSICAL, a look at the manga and novel sales numbers halfway through the year, a not-great update on Kodansha's FUBAR manga app, some smaller convention panels worth going over, and a frank and honest discussion over a recent episode of Oshi no Ko - it may not be for everyone, though. You know what's great about double entendres? They always apply more than one way, and in this case, it's about a bad movie and a bad manga application. Because why go for easy success when failure is an option too? And along with talking about bad failures, we also like to talk about good things, like good shows getting a good dub cast, good shows getting a second chance on home video (in some regions), good cases of lost media being discovered, and good manga platforms coming out of the woodwork to pull a "Sony at E3 2013/E3 1995" move. Even we can't believe we made it to 150 shows. It doesn't even feel like it's been that long, but alas. What a wild journey it's been, and it's still not over yet, and to commemorate this milestone... well, the newsroom was slower than usual over the past few weeks. So, the executive decision was made to bring back a time-trued time-killer in recounting the spring 2023 season dub casts and tack on a full Movie Night show, as well - one for the latest film from Makoto Shinkai, SUZUME. Well, it took a month, but all of us are back in the swing of things, and not a moment too soon either - Sakura-Con, Anime Boston, AND AnimeJapan 2023 all happened and they brought their own slew of announcements to the table for us to sift through and discuss. And to go along with that, we have another dabble in the wild world of lost media, our brief thoughts on the now-over winter season, plenty of non-AnimeJapan project announcements that run the gamut of quality, and Sentai coming out with a double-shot of dub goodness... at the cost of one title not getting a dub, sadly. Next time, Suzume and episode 150 - what a wild ride it's been, and we're not stopping any time soon. intro - to the “Max” 7:15 - what did we think of the winter season? 30:00 - main stories 55:02 - announcements and updates 1:26:22 - AnimeJapan 2023 2:09:22 - Sakura-Con and Anime Boston panels 2:24:20 - home video slates 30:00 - a new Kinnikuman anime is happening 32:11 - Kodansha launching their own digital manga platform in May 35:32 - “but why tho” (and it involves Stu Levy) 38:30 - ANOTHER lost Saban animated pilot has been found 42:20 - Adult Swim gets another hour, Toonami gets… things? 47:26 - Scott Pilgrim, the anime, gets the movie cast 52:45 - Birdie Wing, the anime, gets a Switch game 55:02 - +Ultra is sticking with Crunchyroll 1:03:54 - My Happy Marriage set for Netflix 1:04:44 - Shaman King Flowers coming in January 1:06:43 - Solo Leveling set for winter 2024 1:09:17 - Ishura anime set for Disney+ (and Hulu) 1:11:04 - “somehow, GoHands has returned…” 1:14:58 - Given movie announced, coming soon 1:16:32 - The 100 Girlfriends Who Really, Really, Really, Really, Really Love You anime announced 1:19:23 - a fourth Aquarion series announced 1:20:00 - To Your Eternity S3 announced 1:21:01 - Wind Breaker anime announced 1:22:10 - Tonikawa S2 dub details 1:26:22 - AnimeJapan's annual “make this show already” poll results 1:30:03 - the AnimeJapan 2023 RUNDOWN OF DOOM 2:09:22 - Yen Press Sakura-Con panel (Bocchi the Rock manga licensed) 2:19:58 - HIDive Anime Boston panel (Re:cycle of the Penguindrum) 2:23:01 - Crunchyroll AB/SC announcements (summer/fall acquisitions) 2:24:01 - Anime Limited May releases (Free finale film, Looking For Magical Doremi) 2:26:07 - Crunchyroll June releases (SPY x FAMILY) 2:33:02 - Media Blasters' latest thing and more Boruto 2:34:33 - Discotek June 27th releases (Medarot, more Lupin) 2:35:28 - Sentai July releases (Tokyo Mew MEw New, Re:cycle of the Penguindrum, Eizouken) additional audio from: The Simpsons The X-Files Excel Saga Apple Podcasts – https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/podcastona/id1348141210?mt=2 Google Play – https://podcasts.google.com/feed/aHR0cDovL3d3dy5wb2RjYXN0b25hLnN1cnJlYWxyZXNvbHV0aW9uLmNvbS9mZWVkL3BvZGNhc3Q Spotify – https://open.spotify.com/show/2JZLO3LfoeHepomejTw4TP iHeartRadio – https://www.iheart.com/podcast/256-podcastona-43099114/ TuneIn – https://tunein.com/podcasts/Podcasts/PodcastONA-p1249922/ Stitcher – https://www.stitcher.com/podcast/podcastona/ Where to find us: Alex – @AuraOfAzure Andrew – @MangaMan9000, youtube.com/DubTalk Jet – @Divinenega, youtube.com/DubTalk Duelist – @HeartofSword75, youtube.com/DuelistG As always, check out surrealresolution.com for more content, and follow @SurrealReso for more updates on the show, our continued news posts, reviews, and our fellow podcasts.
Well this is certainly something different. Thanks to some scheduling snafus on all of our ends, we haven't been able to do a normal show for a while, and with nearly a month passed since our last show this brings us to an emergency last-minute bonus show: an hour and change of rambling about the world of live-action anime known as professional wrestling. All of the good and bad of WrestleMania weekend, the biggest weekend of the wrestling industry, from the exciting matches to the baffling finishes, and especially the biggest big business story involving the biggest company of them all - and the sniveling cockroach who keeps climbing back up into positions of power and control. And yes, we'll be back to our regularly scheduled anime snark next weekend. “It's almost like big companies make the worst crap.” - Wade “DankPods” Nixon We try to move past the Crunchyroll Anime Awards show thing, and every year we find ourselves sinking deeper and deeper into its aura of apathy. We don't criticize these events out of a place of bad faith or spite, we do it because we know this company can be so much better, but it seems like wishing for the best isn't what's best for business because these shows keep happening. At least we have more fun and more well-researched awards things from AniTrendz and r/anime, if you can believe it. And to go along with all of that, we have another case of LOST MEDIA being discovered after nearly 10 years with a once-deleted Evangelion movie dub, Boruto going on break because Pierrot needs it, a double dose of Mononoke that happened recently, and we even pop some champagne in honor of a cult charlatan "transcending" to "the other world." Some shows have a central theme that dictate how the rest of the episode will play out, and some shows don't have a real theme to it and are just a hodgepodge of "stuff" to talk about. This is the latter, as we discuss the legacy of Leiji Matsumoto and some questionable future plans from Toei, more continued production delays, whatever this new Zoids project is, and another round of "internet translators are loud and annoying and need to let the adults work" - as one does, you see. You ever have one of THOSE kinds of weeks? Feels like it was one of those weeks for everyone this week, but with the Super Bowl imminent there's no better way to get ready for it than to listen to 2 hours of anime talk - trust us, it's way better than 7 hours of pregame coverage. And for this particular edition, we have a pretty hefty DISCOTEK DAY to go through, some choice words from an anime legend on some projects with his name attached to, a bit of an elephant in regards to a new Gundam dub, but all of that is insignificant to the return of the greatest anime series ever made: KING OF THE HILL. Many years ago, people were comparing Attack on Titan to The Walking Dead in tone and structure. Today, those comparisons continue, only… wait, this is how an episode from last year started off. Well, it happened again, in even more stupefying fashion if you can believe it. And to go along with that, we have what's become an annual tradition at this point: trying to make sense of the Crunchyroll Anime Awards nominations list. But at least we have Discotek Day happening on Monday, and that always makes us feel a little bit better. We also have a rundown of a lot of the dub casts for the winter season, as well as some unfortunate postponements of a few shows from this season, and yet another reason why Crunchyroll's in-house-only dub mandate was very, very stupid. Well, we've made it to 2023. Somehow. In commemoration of this achievement, we're getting back to what we do sort-of best: small town college anime club-styled radio. Admit it, you've missed us, too.
