Well it only took us one hundred and ninety seven episodes, but we have finally done it! Our internet radio show has talked about actual radio. Kinda. We talked about an anime based off a manga that's about actual radio. Er, well okay, not an actual radio station, it was a fictional one. But the anime is real! It's called Wave, Listen to Me!, based off the manga by Hiroaki Samura. The anime was animated over at Sunrise, directed by Tatsuma Minamikawa. We also get into the anime Astro Note, the sudden reappearance of Ninja Gaiden games, and how One Piece is a good time.OSMnotesNow that you have listened to our song podcast, you may be asking yourself “Gosh, how can I check out this show and/or manga?” Do not worry! This week, Gavin and I are discussing one of the best martial arts movies of the past decade that you probably missed, and maybe one of the GREATEST Manga adaptations to ever hit the big screen… ‘Blade of the Immortal'! Directed by the visionary action maestro Takashi Miike and based off of the long running manga of the same named created by Hiroaki Samura, this bloody, battle-tactic, Bushido bonanza will leave you on the edge of your seat! The story follows Manji, a samurai cursed with immortality, who reluctantly becomes the bodyguard for Rin, a young woman out for revenge against the ruthless assassins that wiped out her entire clan. Filled with non-stop swordplay, intricate action design, some the coolest manga characters come to life you have ever seen, and a plethora of wild weaponry, there is something for everyone to enjoy in this one! With a truly enthralling performance by iconic J-Pop star and actor Takuya Kimura as our grizzled protagonist Manji, as well as a stellar supporting cast who are as diverse as they are captivating, every scene keeps your eyes glued to the screen as you wait to see what insane scenario our characters find themselves in next. Listen in as we break down everything from the high-intensity swordplay, the genius of director Takashi Miike, and why this film succeeds where others have failed. You can listen to The Martial Arts Mania Podcast on Soundcloud, Spotify, Apple Podcasts and iHeart Podcasts! Don't forget to subscribe, download, like, and share with your friends! Thanks again for the continued support and we hope you enjoy!
On the surface, the samurai epic Blade of the Immortal is all about the violence, with its gorgeous splash pages of kaleidoscopic dismemberment. Created by Hiroaki Samura, a manga artist about whom very little is known, Blade of the Immortal follows a familiar outline: a young girl named Rin seeks to kill the group of swordsmen responsible for the murder of her family. But Samura's ambitions are greater, and as Rin and her hired hitman Manji make headway into her quest, her feelings about her vengeance grow more complicated. Blade of the Immortal is a 31-volume epic that ran from 1993-2012. In this episode, we'll scratch the surface and take a look at the first six volumes.
The NCAA tournament is about to start, which means more pain for my alma mater Iowa State. I was all in on Hoiball, all in on the Holy Prohman Empire, and now I'm all in on whatever they're calling T. J. Otzelberger's Iowa State. Also the women's team is doing way better, so I'll probably be watching them more... Steve and Rodney talk about Takashi Miike's 2017 adaptation of Hiroaki Samura's manga.
This week's manga log: "Blade of the Immortal" written and illustrated by Hiroaki Samura. Description (courtesy of Amazon): A cursed, seemingly immortal warrior aids a young girl in her quest for revenge, as the students of a brutal new sword school tear a bloody path across Japan. Hiroaki Samura's massive manga series spawned an anime run, a spinoff novel, an art book, and a live-action film! Samura's storytelling tour-de-force also won Japan's Media Arts Award, several British Eagle Awards, and an Eisner Award, among other international accolades. Intense and audacious, Blade takes period samurai action and deftly combines it with a modernist street idiom to create a style and mood like no other work of graphic fiction. The Hollywood live-action adaptation of Yukito Kishiro’s seminal science fiction series Battle Angel Alita (Gunnm), is out in cinemas, but have James Cameron and Robert Rodriguez finally cracked the formula for adapting manga and anime? Andrew, Mick and Rob went to the cinema to find out, but one of them convinced the other two to try the cinema “experience” known as 4DX for the first time. What could possibly go wrong? After that it’s back to business as usual with our regular look at comics and manga that we’ve been reading, which this week are Moon Knight: Phases, Moon Girl And The Marvel Universe, the second collected volume of Die Wergelder by Hiroaki Samura, and Deadpool: Mercin’ Hard For The Money. Manga Mavericks @ Movies month continues as the Mavericks discuss two 2017 films with the word "blade" in their title: Blade Runner 2049 and Blade of the Immortal! But that is not their only connection; both films feature acclaimed directors using their distinctive styles to bring a fresh take to a beloved story. Is Denis Villeneuve's exploration of how to define humanity as artificial intelligence increasingly resembles genuine consciousness superior to Ridley Scott's original take? Beneath its bloody chambara stylings, does Takeshi Miike's adaptation of Hiroaki Samura's manga cut to the heart of its meditation on the futile cycle of revenge and the moral paradox of taking a life to protect another? Abrams' new and "subversive" superhero movie, DC's plans for another TV adaptation Swamp Thing, and a strange case involving Superman, Lois Lane, the Church of Scientology and the FBI.
Enjoy! Comics: Blade of the Immortal door Hiroaki Samura, Pim & Francie door Al Columbia en Swamp Thing: The Dead don’t Sleep door Len Wein en Kelley Jones. • 3:15 Main topic >> FACTS Spring 2017 --- 9:00 – Acteurs --- 23:05 – Rave of Thrones --- 28:10 – A FACTS Day in the life of Art --- 38:15 – Artist rundown --- 1:31:40 – Artist Panels (met nout) --- 1:38:20 – Cosplay --- 1:45:00 – Art on the Changing Nature of Cons & ID • 1:49:45 Gelezen >> Blade of the Immortal Omni 1--- 2:00:49 – Pim & Francie --- 2:10:15 – Swamp Thing: The Dead don’t Sleep
Shea and Derek are back with their January episode of the manga series. But isn't this the first of week of February? Yes it is, but due to unforeseen circumstances, the guys had to postpone the recording of their January episode and had carry it over into this week. But no worries! They still bring you the same great quality manga analysis, and, in addition, this means that listeners will get a double dose of Shea and Derek's manga talk for the month of February! They begin with Hiroaki Samura's Die Wergelder, Vol. 1 (Kodansha Comics). Those familiar Blade of the Immortal will instantly recognize Samura's style and know that they're in for a dynamic narrative punctuated with what some might feel are scenes of gratuitous sexual violence. In fact, Shea addresses this issue toward the beginning of their discussion, wondering if Die Wergelder might put off some of its readers. Derek argues that these kind of scenes serve a legitimate narrative purpose, especially as it regards one of the book's protagonists, Träne, building character and setting a purposefully disturbing context. This first English-language edition collects the first two volumes of the original Japanese series, which began in 2011, and introduces what is arguably the title's three main protagonists, women with uncertain and even tragic pasts whose stories converge in a narrative of yakuza wars and corporate intrigue. Next, the guys turn to Suehiro Maruo's The Strange Tale of Panorama Island (Last Gasp). Originally published in English in 2013, this is an adaptation of Edogawa Rampo's 1920s novel, a twisted Poe-esque narrative of death, indulgences, and self-reinvention. Derek highlights what he sees as the carnivalesque nature of the story, but a more appropriate descriptive frame would be ero guro (erotic grotesque), a style of art defined by eroticism, decadence, and sexual (at times horrific) indulgence. Indeed, Maruo is known for this kind of manga, perhaps more notably displayed in Mr. Arashi's Amazing Freak Show and the stories collected in Ultra-Gash Inferno. Panorama Island is more tame and lower down the "grotesque" scale than these books, but it's nonetheless a disturbing, nightmarish journey into human desire.
Tsjoeke tsjoeke tsjoeke tsjoeke... BLAM! BLAM! BLAM! IN STILTE! Daarna kunnen we verder. Comics: Slaine in verschillende incarnaties door Pat Mills, Simon Bisley en Clint Langley, Jaegir: Beasts Within door Gordon Rennie en Simon Coleby en Blade of the Immortal door Hiroaki Samura.
