With some movie genres, you feel like you know exactly what you're going to get before you even see the movie. For many years, the war movie genre has fit that mold. For better or worse, when you walk into a war movie you expect a triumphant score, violence and gore, (sometimes forced) dialogue to build the appearance of camaraderie, sappy backstories to raise the stakes, etc. But occasionally, a genre film comes along that attempts to break the mold and shift the paradigm on to expect from its genre. Warfare attempts exactly that. Written based solely on the memories of the real-life navy seal veterans who were there and unfolding on screen in real time, Warfare challenges the norm of the war film genre in hopes of creating a new standard for based on a true story war movies. Are they successful in doing so? In this spoiler-free Warfare review, Stefano and Cam discuss exactly that, breaking down the performances, filmmaking and technical achievements, story, and more! Don't forget to share your thoughts on Warfare or our review in the comments and check the links in the description for more movie news and review content as well as a link to join our free Discord server where you can chat movies with us. The most upsetting realization that came out of this movie review is that Cam had never heard of Green Day's hit song “Give Me Novocain”. Epic films. Lawrence of Arabia, Ben Hur, Braveheart, the list goes on. Cinema history is filled with long, sweeping epic films that have mastered the art of storytelling on the largest scale. In 2024, Brady Corbet's The Brutalist released, vying for a spot in the pantheon of celebrated film epics, a spot that has not been filled in some time as these types of films seemingly become rarer each year. The question is, did Brady Corbet accomplish his goal of creating a modern epic about a Hungarian refugee who lands in America in the aftermath of WWII. Starring Adrien Brody, Guy Pearce, Felicity Jones, and other fantastic actors, it would seem the cast is more than up to the task. In this spoiler-free The Brutalist Review, Cam, Kirk, and their guest, Popcorn for Breakfast Contributor, Stefano, discuss all aspects of the 3.5-hour long film and determine where it stands among 2024 releases as well as the great epics of all time. Every awards season there is a biopic anchored by a “transformative performance” from a big named actor that scoops up a ton of nominations as well as the hearts of viewers and awards voters everywhere. That's not to say that these types of movies don't have merit as many of them do! Nevertheless, it is a pattern we see repeated year after year. This year's entry into that collection of films is A Complete Unknown from director James Mangold starring Timotheé Chalamet as Bob Dylan. On paper, the film checks a lot of boxes for “awards bait,” but does it come together to make a respectable biopic rather than another cookie cutter formula biopic? Since Moana was released to streaming services, it's been played more than 1 BILLION HOURS. That's over 150,000 years of watching Moana in less than 10 years since its release. Suffice to say, those are big shoes to fill. Initially, MOANA 2 was announced as a Disney+ series. Only in February of its same release year did we learn that it was being reworked into a feature film. Can the underdog story of everyone's favorite wayfinder survive such a conversion, or will she wipe out entirely in a sea of popular theater releases.
