“All love is risky. People die, they leave, they don't listen to you—but you love them anyway.” — Virginia DeLuca When Virginia DeLuca's husband unexpectedly walked out on their marriage in his 60s—claiming he wanted children—her gut reaction wasn't just heartbreak. It was: If you must go, I wish you triplets. That quip became the title of her deeply honest and darkly humorous memoir. In this episode of Uncorking a Story, Virginia joins Mike Carlon to talk about grief, personal reinvention, writing as therapy, and why putting your story out into the world is an act of both courage and compassion. Key Themes: Writing is healing – Virginia began writing her memoir the moment her husband walked out, using it to make sense of her emotional shock. You can't control others—only your reaction – A central theme in Virginia's journey is the power of choosing your response when life veers off script. Grief is a lifelong relationship – Whether it's a sibling lost decades ago or a recent heartbreak, grief evolves with us and often deepens our compassion. Snark can be survival – The title of her book, while cheeky, came from a place of real pain—and became a tool for reclaiming her story. Memoir is exposure – Writing a memoir is an act of radical vulnerability, especially for someone who identifies as private, not performative. Publishing is a rollercoaster – Virginia shares her path from agent rejections to finding a supportive home at a student-run university press. Not everyone understands your pain—but that's okay – From parenting to heartbreak, sometimes the only validation you need is your own. Mara De Luca's (b. 1973, Washington D.C.) paintings evoke a sense of atmospheric abstractions that bring to mind dusk, sunsets, and planetary orbs. Throughout her work there is a sense of reflected ambient light. De Luca's work today extends the celebration of illusionism, romanticism, and the sublime with a deeply informed response to modernist painting. De Luca received an MFA from CalArts, Los Angeles, CA and a BA from Columbia University, NY. Her work has been displayed at the Museum of Contemporary Art, San Diego and is in prominent collections, including the Buck Collection at UC Irvine, JP Morgan Chase, New York; Fidelity, Boston; Alexander Plaza Berlin, Germany; New York Medical College, New York; and the University of Oslo, Norway. She has been reviewed in Artforum, Cultured Magazine, The Los Angeles Times, Artweek LA, and others. De Luca is a recipient of the 2019 California Community Foundation Fellowship for Visual Artists.

In this episode of the podcast we welcome Amelia DeLuca, Chief Sustainability Officer at Delta Air Lines.Besides being one of the World's largest airlines, Delta, is also a very active player in the field of air travel innovation and decarbonization.Delta has committed to getting to net zero by 2050 with Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) expected to play a big role in achieving this goal. To this end, Delta has signed a string of SAF deals across the US and is also working with SAF producers in several states to increase supply of this so-far scarce type of fuel. Delta intends to use 10% of SAF in its fuel mix by 2030 and to increase this figure to 35% by 2035. But this is not the only path to decarbonization that Delta is exploring. In fact, when it comes to sustainability, Delta is active on so many fronts that it has created the Delta Sustainable Skies Lab to gather all its sustainability-focused initiatives under one roof. Remarkably, just as Delta is marking its centenary, it is also actively investing in technologies that promise to re-shape the way to travel in the next 100 years. Two examples of this policy are Delta's is investment in leading eVTOL developer Joby Aviation and its strategic partnership with JetZero, a startup developing a revolutionary blended-wing-body aircraft concept capable of halving fuel consumption, all while redefining completely the passenger experience. So, tune in to listen to Amelia talking about all these exciting projects and explaining how they fit into Delta's vision of the future of commercial aviation!

Jon Di Luca Interviewed me about my time studying the Japanese martial art of aikido. To quote Jon: ‘To summarize what we talked about, I'd say it was mainly centered on if/how martial arts training could be used as a testing ground for spiritual concepts. Even after this conversation, the question lingers for me - how can martial arts practice, intrinsically linked to violence and conflict, be a path towards spiritual awakening? (S4-EP 12) Frank Zappa and The Mothers of Invention-Absolutely Free (Verve) (Special Guest Steve DeLuca) Released May 26, 1967 recorded November 15–18, 1966 March 6, 1967[Absolutely Free, the second album by The Mothers of Invention. Expanding on the experimental nature of their debut, Freak Out!, the album blends rock, jazz, and classical music with biting social and political satire. Structured as two conceptual suites—"Absolutely Free" and "The M.O.I. American Pageant"—the album critiques American culture, consumerism, and political corruption. Tracks like "Plastic People" and "Brown Shoes Don't Make It" mock conformity and hypocrisy, while the ambitious composition of "Brown Shoes" showcases Zappa's mastery of genre fusion. Recorded in just four days with a limited budget, Absolutely Free incorporates influences from Stravinsky, Holst, and Varèse, foreshadowing Zappa's later experimental works. Though controversial and facing censorship, the album reached #41 on the Billboard 200 and has since become a cult classic. It remains a landmark in avant-garde rock, cementing Zappa's reputation as a fearless musical innovator. Joining Jay on this extended episode is returning guest music historian and drummer Steve DeLuca. The paintings in Marisa DeLuca's series Spectre document the changing urban landscape of the city she lives in—Oceanside, California—mourning spaces made ephemeral by the forces of gentrification. In our conversation we talked about the difference between painting and photography, how process affects the ontology of an art object, how audiences make meaning, and the intersection of art and activism. Then for the second segment, Marisa and I talked about spirit of place and the importance of the commons in communities. For the capstone of his Hollywood Stories series exploring the 1990s — an era of explosive creativity and innovation in the entertainment industry — Richard Rushfield talks to two execs who helped New Line Cinema become the movie studio of that golden moment. Mike De Luca is today the co-chair and CEO of Warner Bros. Motion Picture Group, but in the '90s he was the head of production at New Line, a powerful role he stepped into at the tender age of 27. Richard Brener started as a temp at New Line in 1995 and never left, working his way up to run the studio (now a division of Warner Bros.) as its president and chief creative officer. Together they recall how the indie house launched by Bob Shaye in 1967 struck gold nearly 30 years later with comedy blockbusters (Austin Powers, Dumb and Dumber, Rush Hour, The Wedding Singer) and revered auteur-driven dramas (American History X, Boogie Nights, Se7en). As an indie, "you were kind of locked into lower-budget acquisitions and films — that all coalesced into a business plan of sleeper hits," De Luca says. “We were not afraid of trying things that we liked, even if other people had passed on them.” Learn more about your ad choices.
