Renée De Luca joins Herlinda Heras on Brew Ha Ha to remember her father Jack McAuliffe, who recently passed away. Renée was on this show a year ago, talking about her father and some new activity around the brand he founded. Here is part one of that episode, and Part Two follows here. Renée De Luca joins us on the telephone, she is the daughter of Jack McAuliffe, founder of New Albion brewing company, who passed away just recently. He passed away on July 15 at the age of eighty. He founded a whole beer revolution, is no exaggeration. His passing has been covered widely in the mainstream press such as NPR and the Washington Post, as well as many beer publications. During his life he was already the subject of some articles, due to his influence, although that came near the end of New Albion. Over the last few years Renée and brought him to some craft brewers conferences and she is confident he knew that he would be remembered. Russian River Brewing Co. is open in Santa Rosa on 4th St. and at their big Windsor location. Visit their website for up-to-date hours, menus, beers and more. The First Post-Prohibition Micro-Brewery: New Albion Jack McAuliffe was in the US Navy in the 1960s where he enjoyed the local porters, ales and stouts. Back in the US, all there was to drink was crappy American commercial beer that he didn't like. So he learned how to brew his own. His operation was the first post-Prohibition micro-brewery to be founded in the United States, in 1976. Suspect in Execution-Style Murders of ‘American Idol' Executive and Husband Had History of Violence and Mental Health Issues The man accused of killing American Idol music supervisor Robin Kaye and her husband, Thomas DeLuca, in their Encino, California, home last week had a history of alarming behavior, multiple arrests, and signs of mental instability, according to court and police records, as well as interviews with neighbors. Raymond Boodarian, 22, was arrested on Tuesday, July 9, and charged with two counts of murder following a violent home invasion that left Kaye, 69, and DeLuca, 70, dead from multiple gunshot wounds to the head. The couple was found in their $4.5 million gated mansion in Encino, a neighborhood in the San Fernando Valley area of Los Angeles. Boodarian, who lived about 13 minutes away from the victims' home, had long raised red flags in his own community. According to multiple neighbors, he frequently exhibited disturbing behavior, including wandering the streets high on drugs, staring into homes, and bringing known drug users into the area. “He would just sit in front of houses smiling and staring. It was unsettling,” one neighbor told The New York Post. “No one was shocked when we heard he'd been arrested.” Records show that Boodarian had been arrested multiple times between October 2023 and June 2024 on charges including brandishing a deadly weapon, battery, and criminal threats with intent to terrorize, according to Los Angeles Times and state inmate records. However, the charges were dismissed after he was found mentally incompetent to stand trial. Despite these concerns, Boodarian was released several times, including after a six-month stint in custody that ended earlier this year. Authorities believe that on Thursday, July 4, 2025, Boodarian broke into Kaye and DeLuca's residence, which was protected by fencing, gates, and surveillance systems. A neighbor spotted a man jumping the couple's fence around 4:00 p.m. and called police. Officers arrived and conducted an aerial search with a helicopter but found no immediate signs of a break-in. Tragically, investigators now say that by the time police arrived, Kaye and DeLuca were already dead inside the home. Los Angeles Police Department Lt. Guy Golan confirmed that Boodarian remained inside the residence for roughly 30 minutes before the couple arrived home. “A violent struggle ensued between the victims and the suspect, who was already inside. The homeowners were ruthlessly shot multiple times,” Golan said. Fingerprints from Boodarian's prior arrests and surveillance footage tied him to the crime scene, according to TMZ, which also published images of Boodarian being arrested shirtless outside his home, surrounded by officers in tactical gear. Robin Kaye was a highly respected music supervisor who worked on American Idol for at least 15 seasons, helping to shape the sound and success of the long-running reality competition. She also worked on productions including Lip Sync Battle, Miss USA, and Miss Universe. Thomas DeLuca, her husband, was a musician who, like Kaye, was deeply embedded in the entertainment industry. The couple was well-known and beloved in their professional and personal circles. Want to comment and watch this podcast as a video? On today's show, Alex and Calvin continue their series on “AI” and public discourse, focusing this time on the increasing proliferation of AI applications in government writing, policy, and social media. We characterize the second Trump administration as the "first totally post-AI presidency," which has adopted the "dumbest, most unreflective, most uncritical approach" to AI's use in communication, research, and analysis. Throughout the show, we emphasize how AI technologies are themselves rhetorical artifacts at the same time as they so often produce “bad” rhetoric, reflecting the intentions, values, and presuppositions of their creators, as well as the inherent biases of their training data and text generation models. This often results in an entry-level, overly dense writing style - often referred to as "slop" - which is almost written not to be read, but rather to fill space. We explore several concerning examples of AI's uncritical adoption by the secondTrump administration and their acolytes in the tech world. Early executive orders exhibited AI-generated formatting errors and formulaic, generic language, demonstrating a context-blind style that could lead to legal problems and erode public trust. Furthermore, the "MAHA Report" from the Office of Health and Human Services was found to fabricate studies and misrepresent findings, reflecting how large language models are "sycophantic," and can reinforce existing (often false) beliefs. Our discussion also covers Palantir's "Foundry" product, which aims to combine diverse government datasets, raising significant privacy and political concerns, especially given the political leanings of Palantir's founders. Finally, we examine xAI's Grok chatbot (run by Elon Musk), which illustrates how tech elites can exert incredible political power through direct interventions in AI tools' system prompts - which in recent months has led Grok to parrot conspiracy theories and make explicit antisemitic remarks on the public feeds of X/Twitter.Ultimately, our analyses emphasizes - once again - that these so-called “AI” technologies are not neutral; they are, in the words of Matteo Pasquinelli, "crystallization[s] of a productive social process" that "reinforce the power structure that underlies [them]," perpetuating existing inequalities. Understanding these mechanisms and engaging in what Pasquinelli terms "de-connectionism" - undoing the social and economic fabric constituting these systems - is essential for critiquing the structural factors and power dynamics that AI reproduces in public discourse.Have any questions or concerns about this episode? Our card this week is Carmen "CJ" DeLuca, the Wild Card from Connecticut. When a man stopped to get gas in the middle of the night in 1985, he had no idea he was walking into the scene of a murder. The 23-year-old gas station attendant, Carmen “CJ” DeLuca, had been shot to death for seemingly no reason. But with no witnesses and no clear motive, police had no idea who killed him. He was a good guy with no known enemies, engaged to the love of his life, and planning a wedding that would never happen. It wasn't until another customer walked into another gas station to get his morning coffee…and found another attendant shot that investigators were able to hone in on some suspects. Because their second victim was alive, he got a clear look at the man who shot him. But 40 years later, investigators haven't been able to identify the shooter. They think they're close, but time is running out as evidence, suspects, and memories are lost to time. They need someone to come forward and confirm their suspicions to get justice for CJ, his fiancé, and the life they never got to have together. If you have any information on the death of Carmen “CJ” DeLuca, please contact the Connecticut Cold Case Unit at 1-866-623-8058 or email cold.case@ct.gov.View source material and photos for this episode at: thedeckpodcast.com/carmen-deluca Let us deal you in… follow The Deck on social media.Instagram: @thedeckpodcast | @audiochuckTwitter: @thedeckpodcast_ | @audiochuckFacebook: /TheDeckPodcast | /audiochuckllcTo support Season of Justice and learn more, please visit seasonofjustice.org.The Deck is hosted by Ashley Flowers. Instagram: @ashleyflowersTikTok: @ashleyflowerscrimejunkieTwitter: @Ash_FlowersFacebook: /AshleyFlowers.AFText Ashley at 317-733-7485 to talk all things true crime, get behind the scenes updates, and more!

What are the 4Qs? (1) Three favorite films. (2) An underrated film. (3) An overrated film. (4) A lesser-known film people should seek out. On the last episode I throughly enjoyed chatting with Donato De Luca, who I learned actually goes by Joe! Joe and his team brought their short film “Grand Romantic Gestures” to the Sherman Oaks Film Festival in 2024 and took home the Filmmakers Award for Outstanding Creativity - Drama. I was definitely excited to follow up this interview with Joe's 4 Questions. Happy Friday, Listeners! Donato De Luca and his team brought their short film “Grand Romantic Gestures” to the Sherman Oaks Film Festival in 2024 and took home the Filmmakers Award for Outstanding Creativity - Drama. Amusingly, the young gentleman who I thought of as “Donato” for the entire run of the festival hopped onto this podcast and told me that he goes by Joe!                                                                                       I'm not sure if I called him Joe during this podcast, but hopefully he will come to a Festival Mixer soon for me to try it out in person. Joe is one of those filmmakers, in this case producer and lead actor, who we love to have at a festival.                                                                                                                                                                       He came to many screenings other than his own and when you listen to the interview you'll hear of the interactions we had that led to our amusing rapport. “All love is risky. People die, they leave, they don't listen to you—but you love them anyway.” — Virginia DeLuca When Virginia DeLuca's husband unexpectedly walked out on their marriage in his 60s—claiming he wanted children—her gut reaction wasn't just heartbreak. It was: If you must go, I wish you triplets. That quip became the title of her deeply honest and darkly humorous memoir. In this episode of Uncorking a Story, Virginia joins Mike Carlon to talk about grief, personal reinvention, writing as therapy, and why putting your story out into the world is an act of both courage and compassion. Key Themes: Writing is healing – Virginia began writing her memoir the moment her husband walked out, using it to make sense of her emotional shock. You can't control others—only your reaction – A central theme in Virginia's journey is the power of choosing your response when life veers off script. Grief is a lifelong relationship – Whether it's a sibling lost decades ago or a recent heartbreak, grief evolves with us and often deepens our compassion. Snark can be survival – The title of her book, while cheeky, came from a place of real pain—and became a tool for reclaiming her story. Memoir is exposure – Writing a memoir is an act of radical vulnerability, especially for someone who identifies as private, not performative. Publishing is a rollercoaster – Virginia shares her path from agent rejections to finding a supportive home at a student-run university press. Not everyone understands your pain—but that's okay – From parenting to heartbreak, sometimes the only validation you need is your own. The Thin Red Line: A Masterpiece Explored by Peter A. DeLuca For Memorial Day 2025, film enthusiast Peter A. DeLuca, known as AKAPAD The Film Buff, reflects on what he considers the greatest war movie of all time: The Thin Red Line (1998). Directed by Terrence Malick, this cinematic gem stands out for its profound exploration of war, humanity, and sacrifice. DeLuca delves into the historical context of the film, its competitive landscape during its release, and its enduring significance. Set against the backdrop of the Battle of Guadalcanal in World War II, The Thin Red Line transcends traditional war narratives with its philosophical depth and poetic visuals. DeLuca highlights how the film's release alongside other 1998 war epics, like Saving Private Ryan, sparked debates among critics and audiences. Yet, its introspective storytelling and stellar ensemble cast cemented its legacy. For history buffs and cinephiles alike, The Thin Red Line remains a vital work, offering timeless insights into the human cost of conflict. DeLuca's passion for this masterpiece underscores why it continues to resonate, making it a fitting tribute for Memorial Day reflection.

“He is the hottest hoarder you've ever seen!” - Steve on Ryan Phillippe's character On this week's episode, the 2025 Listener Request Month comes to a close with a rowdy discussion about the ridiculously tame PG-13 horror movie, Wish Upon! Why on Earth did they care about avoiding an R rating with this fake Final Destination movie? What is with all the dumpster diving? Why couldn't this wish box talk or be accompanied by a ghost or something? And where is literally any faculty administrator with all the bullying going down at this school? PLUS: How can one be a slut for wontons?  Wish Upon stars Joey King, Ryan Phillippe, Ki Hong Lee, Mitchell Slaggert, Shannon Purser, Sydney Park, Elisabeth Röhm, Alice Lee, and Sherilyn Fenn as Mrs. Deluca; directed by John R.
