Pablo Deluca López, vicepresidente del Centro de Estudios Imazighen de Canarias y profesor de matemáticas, presenta en el programa El Remate de Capital Radio un tema fascinante sobre el expolio histórico de las momias canarias. La conversación gira en torno a la presentación de un libro titulado "El viaje de las momias canarias", que tuvo lugar el jueves 9 de octubre en el Salón Nobel del Cabildo, con la asistencia del vicepresidente segundo y numerosos investigadores interesados en el tema. El libro, financiado por la editorial Erke de Juan Francisco Delgado Gómez, ha recibido el apoyo institucional de cinco de los siete Cabildos canarios y más de treinta ayuntamientos del archipiélago. La obra está coordinada por Antonio Tejera Gaspar y cuenta con la participación de ocho investigadores, entre los que Deluca destaca especialmente a Ignacio Darwish, un documentador especializado que ha profundizado extensamente en el estudio de las momias canarias. El dato más impactante que revela el libro es que existen cerca de cincuenta momias canarias que actualmente se encuentran fuera de las islas, resultado de lo que Deluca califica como un expolio sistemático. Este fenómeno comenzó a finales del siglo XVI y se intensificó durante los siglos XVIII y XIX, convirtiéndose en una práctica habitual entre comerciantes y viajeros europeos que visitaban el archipiélago. Curiosamente, el siglo XVII no registra casos de expolio, a pesar de que hubo visitas de viajeros europeos durante ese período. Deluca destaca el caso ejemplar del doctor Evan Loehr, un médico galés que visitó Tenerife en el siglo XVII y trató las momias con gran respeto. Como agradecimiento por haber curado a varios guanches, estos le invitaron a visitar una necrópolis secreta en Güímar, un honor extraordinario dado que los aborígenes guardaban celosamente la ubicación de sus lugares de enterramiento. En aquella necrópolis, el doctor galés encontró entre cien y quinientas momias dispuestas ordenadamente, y documentó detalladamente el proceso de embalsamamiento de los cadáveres, sin llevarse ninguna pieza. El invitado explica que los guanches no enterraban a sus muertos bajo tierra según el concepto tradicional de enterramiento, sino que los depositaban en cuevas sepulcrales sobre parihuelas llamadas "chajascos" en lengua guanche. Este sistema de conservación permitió que los cuerpos se momificaran naturalmente y se mantuvieran en buen estado durante siglos. El siglo XVIII, conocido como el Siglo de la Ilustración, marcó el inicio del expolio sistemático más intenso. Durante este período y especialmente en el siglo XIX, numerosos europeos, principalmente ingleses, alemanes y franceses, visitaban los lugares más recónditos del archipiélago, especialmente Tenerife y Gran Canaria, aunque también otras islas en menor medida. Estos viajeros ilustrados, motivados por el interés científico y coleccionista característico de la época, buscaban estas momias y las extraían de sus lugares de reposo para llevarlas a Europa. El libro documenta este proceso de expolio que estuvo de moda entre los círculos cultos europeos de la época, revelando cómo el patrimonio arqueológico canario fue sistemáticamente saqueado durante siglos. La obra constituye un importante trabajo de investigación que no solo denuncia este expolio histórico sino que también documenta dónde se encuentran actualmente estas momias canarias dispersas por museos y colecciones privadas europeas, poniendo sobre la mesa la cuestión pendiente de la repatriación de este patrimonio cultural canario.

Support Connection's Annual Support-A-Walk for Breast & Ovarian Cancer is community event dedicated to raising awareness about the needs of those living with breast, ovarian, or any gynecological cancer. The 2025 walk took place on Sunday, October 5, at FDR State Park in Yorktown Heights, NY, where everyone was invited to “Walk With Us, Wherever You Are.” The walk helps fund Support Connection's free and vital services, including one-on-one peer counseling, support groups, educational and wellness programs, and social activities. Participants came together to celebrate, support, and remember loved ones. Las pirámides más conocidas: Pablo menciona principalmente las pirámides de Chacona y las de Güímar (que forman un parque etnográfico iniciado por Alfred Olsen). También destaca importantes construcciones troncopiramidales en la comarca de Icod de los Vinos, en el antiguo menceyato de Icoden, zona de los primeros asentamientos guanches. Falta de investigación del interior: Aunque se han realizado excavaciones superficiales en la plataforma entre las pirámides (encontrando vasijas andaluzas del siglo XIX), nunca se ha investigado el interior de las estructuras piramidales. Se encargaron estudios con georadar a una empresa china y de paleoluminiscencia al CSIC de Madrid, pero ninguno se llevó a cabo. Posibles funciones: Se plantean dos hipótesis sobre su propósito: Calendario solar: basado en sus alineaciones astronómicas Enterramientos: similar a las "bazinas" del norte de África (túmulos funerarios). Se encontraron restos guanches, obsidiana y cerámica en una pequeña cueva de la pirámide A, descubierta por el arqueólogo Vitoriano Valencia. Orientación astronómica: El aspecto más importante es la alineación precisa de las pirámides. El eje principal de las estructuras B y C está orientado hacia el pico de Chiomarual en Güímar, coincidiendo con el solsticio de verano (21 de junio). Suspect in Execution-Style Murders of ‘American Idol' Executive and Husband Had History of Violence and Mental Health Issues The man accused of killing American Idol music supervisor Robin Kaye and her husband, Thomas DeLuca, in their Encino, California, home last week had a history of alarming behavior, multiple arrests, and signs of mental instability, according to court and police records, as well as interviews with neighbors. Raymond Boodarian, 22, was arrested on Tuesday, July 9, and charged with two counts of murder following a violent home invasion that left Kaye, 69, and DeLuca, 70, dead from multiple gunshot wounds to the head. The couple was found in their $4.5 million gated mansion in Encino, a neighborhood in the San Fernando Valley area of Los Angeles. Boodarian, who lived about 13 minutes away from the victims' home, had long raised red flags in his own community. According to multiple neighbors, he frequently exhibited disturbing behavior, including wandering the streets high on drugs, staring into homes, and bringing known drug users into the area. “He would just sit in front of houses smiling and staring. It was unsettling,” one neighbor told The New York Post. “No one was shocked when we heard he'd been arrested.” Records show that Boodarian had been arrested multiple times between October 2023 and June 2024 on charges including brandishing a deadly weapon, battery, and criminal threats with intent to terrorize, according to Los Angeles Times and state inmate records. However, the charges were dismissed after he was found mentally incompetent to stand trial. Despite these concerns, Boodarian was released several times, including after a six-month stint in custody that ended earlier this year. Authorities believe that on Thursday, July 4, 2025, Boodarian broke into Kaye and DeLuca's residence, which was protected by fencing, gates, and surveillance systems. A neighbor spotted a man jumping the couple's fence around 4:00 p.m. and called police. Officers arrived and conducted an aerial search with a helicopter but found no immediate signs of a break-in. Tragically, investigators now say that by the time police arrived, Kaye and DeLuca were already dead inside the home. Los Angeles Police Department Lt. Guy Golan confirmed that Boodarian remained inside the residence for roughly 30 minutes before the couple arrived home. “A violent struggle ensued between the victims and the suspect, who was already inside. The homeowners were ruthlessly shot multiple times,” Golan said. Fingerprints from Boodarian's prior arrests and surveillance footage tied him to the crime scene, according to TMZ, which also published images of Boodarian being arrested shirtless outside his home, surrounded by officers in tactical gear. Robin Kaye was a highly respected music supervisor who worked on American Idol for at least 15 seasons, helping to shape the sound and success of the long-running reality competition. Suspect in Execution-Style Murders of ‘American Idol' Executive and Husband Had History of Violence and Mental Health Issues The man accused of killing American Idol music supervisor Robin Kaye and her husband, Thomas DeLuca, in their Encino, California, home last week had a history of alarming behavior, multiple arrests, and signs of mental instability, according to court and police records, as well as interviews with neighbors. Raymond Boodarian, 22, was arrested on Tuesday, July 9, and charged with two counts of murder following a violent home invasion that left Kaye, 69, and DeLuca, 70, dead from multiple gunshot wounds to the head. The couple was found in their $4.5 million gated mansion in Encino, a neighborhood in the San Fernando Valley area of Los Angeles. Boodarian, who lived about 13 minutes away from the victims' home, had long raised red flags in his own community. According to multiple neighbors, he frequently exhibited disturbing behavior, including wandering the streets high on drugs, staring into homes, and bringing known drug users into the area. “He would just sit in front of houses smiling and staring. It was unsettling,” one neighbor told The New York Post. “No one was shocked when we heard he'd been arrested.” Records show that Boodarian had been arrested multiple times between October 2023 and June 2024 on charges including brandishing a deadly weapon, battery, and criminal threats with intent to terrorize, according to Los Angeles Times and state inmate records. However, the charges were dismissed after he was found mentally incompetent to stand trial. Despite these concerns, Boodarian was released several times, including after a six-month stint in custody that ended earlier this year. Authorities believe that on Thursday, July 4, 2025, Boodarian broke into Kaye and DeLuca's residence, which was protected by fencing, gates, and surveillance systems. A neighbor spotted a man jumping the couple's fence around 4:00 p.m. and called police. Officers arrived and conducted an aerial search with a helicopter but found no immediate signs of a break-in. Tragically, investigators now say that by the time police arrived, Kaye and DeLuca were already dead inside the home. Los Angeles Police Department Lt. Guy Golan confirmed that Boodarian remained inside the residence for roughly 30 minutes before the couple arrived home. “A violent struggle ensued between the victims and the suspect, who was already inside. The homeowners were ruthlessly shot multiple times,” Golan said. Fingerprints from Boodarian's prior arrests and surveillance footage tied him to the crime scene, according to TMZ, which also published images of Boodarian being arrested shirtless outside his home, surrounded by officers in tactical gear. Robin Kaye was a highly respected music supervisor who worked on American Idol for at least 15 seasons, helping to shape the sound and success of the long-running reality competition. She also worked on productions including Lip Sync Battle, Miss USA, and Miss Universe. Thomas DeLuca, her husband, was a musician who, like Kaye, was deeply embedded in the entertainment industry. On today's show, Alex and Calvin continue their series on “AI” and public discourse, focusing this time on the increasing proliferation of AI applications in government writing, policy, and social media. We characterize the second Trump administration as the "first totally post-AI presidency," which has adopted the "dumbest, most unreflective, most uncritical approach" to AI's use in communication, research, and analysis. Throughout the show, we emphasize how AI technologies are themselves rhetorical artifacts at the same time as they so often produce “bad” rhetoric, reflecting the intentions, values, and presuppositions of their creators, as well as the inherent biases of their training data and text generation models. This often results in an entry-level, overly dense writing style - often referred to as "slop" - which is almost written not to be read, but rather to fill space.We explore several concerning examples of AI's uncritical adoption by the secondTrump administration and their acolytes in the tech world. Early executive orders exhibited AI-generated formatting errors and formulaic, generic language, demonstrating a context-blind style that could lead to legal problems and erode public trust. Furthermore, the "MAHA Report" from the Office of Health and Human Services was found to fabricate studies and misrepresent findings, reflecting how large language models are "sycophantic," and can reinforce existing (often false) beliefs. Our discussion also covers Palantir's "Foundry" product, which aims to combine diverse government datasets, raising significant privacy and political concerns, especially given the political leanings of Palantir's founders. Finally, we examine xAI's Grok chatbot (run by Elon Musk), which illustrates how tech elites can exert incredible political power through direct interventions in AI tools' system prompts - which in recent months has led Grok to parrot conspiracy theories and make explicit antisemitic remarks on the public feeds of X/Twitter.Ultimately, our analyses emphasizes - once again - that these so-called “AI” technologies are not neutral; they are, in the words of Matteo Pasquinelli, "crystallization[s] of a productive social process" that "reinforce the power structure that underlies [them]," perpetuating existing inequalities. Understanding these mechanisms and engaging in what Pasquinelli terms "de-connectionism" - undoing the social and economic fabric constituting these systems - is essential for critiquing the structural factors and power dynamics that AI reproduces in public discourse.Have any questions or concerns about this episode? Our card this week is Carmen "CJ" DeLuca, the Wild Card from Connecticut. When a man stopped to get gas in the middle of the night in 1985, he had no idea he was walking into the scene of a murder. The 23-year-old gas station attendant, Carmen “CJ” DeLuca, had been shot to death for seemingly no reason. But with no witnesses and no clear motive, police had no idea who killed him. He was a good guy with no known enemies, engaged to the love of his life, and planning a wedding that would never happen. It wasn't until another customer walked into another gas station to get his morning coffee…and found another attendant shot that investigators were able to hone in on some suspects. Because their second victim was alive, he got a clear look at the man who shot him. But 40 years later, investigators haven't been able to identify the shooter. They think they're close, but time is running out as evidence, suspects, and memories are lost to time.
