Shelter and Solidarity: A Deep Dive with Artists and Activists
Political economists Doug Henwood (of The Nation, Jacobin, and Left Business Observer) and Bryan Snyder (of Dollars & Sense) join us to dissect the newly installed Biden administration and what it means for the people and for left politics in our time. What is the meaning of Biden's actions since taking office? His cabinet appointments? His much-heralded executive orders? His stated policy objectives (and those of the Democratic Party leadership that now controls both houses of Congress?)What are the openings for progressive, labor, environmental, and social justice movements foreseeable in the coming period? In what ways is Biden's admin likely to depart from the Trump regime's policies? In what ways have the current crises (from COVID-19, to endemic police violence, to widespread unemployment) created new opportunities that could allow for the new regime to be pressured from without? Are there openings for a (Green) New Deal under Biden, or are we likely to be fed more of the same ol' deal? What are we likely to see coming down from the Biden administration, based on its recent moves, as well as its ideological and policy history? How can those committed to a just, sustainable, and more equal world best prepare to respond and engage the new terrain?

Bryan Snyder grew up exploring the rolling hills and shady creeks of upstate New York. A year abroad in Scotland, filled with hitchhiking adventures in the highlands and journeys to ruined castles convinced him that he needed to find employment outdoors. So after college, Bryan taught natural science to young students at various environmental schools from Maine to Hawaii before settling on the West Coast. Through trial and error, Bryan learned how to travel on the limited budget of a seasonal outdoor educator, which enabled a series of summertime odysseys in the Sierras and Rocky Mountains. Two decades after coming to the West, Bryan continues to tempt fate in the thorniest of natural landscapes. His "Off The Map" trilogy of adventure stories documents his numerous encounters with bears, storms, cliffs and other near-catastrophes. Today, we’re going to learn how those stories inspired Bryan to pursue a lifestyle of adventure and how he inspires other to find their own passions in the outdoors and travel, through writing. This podcast is sponsored by Vestigo and produced by Force Media.
In Episode 45, I speak with author Bryan Snyder about his latest book "Falling Off The Map: Fifty-Four Explorations into the Wildest Reaches of the American West". Bryan is an educator, hiker, backpacker, climber, car camper and all-around adventurer, and in the show we hear about his 20+ summers traveling throughout North America. He also shares with us some tales from a recent trip to Burning Man in the Nevada desert. Bryan has logged over 350K miles in his Jeep Cherokee, code named "Charlie", and in the book (and on the show) he offers some tips and tricks for staying on the road and traveling on the cheap. This is the first of a two part series which will make you want to start saving and planning for a summer road trip.
