Columbia's municipal elections are less than three months away. Columbia mayor Barbara Buffaloe is seeking a second term in April and has at least two challengers: businessman Blair “Murph” Murphy and Mizzou journalism instructor Tanya Heath. Ms. Heath also ran in 2022. Mr. Murphy co-owns Johnston Paint and Decorating on Buttonwood. Comobuz publisher Mike Murphy, who also anchors afternoon newscasts on 939 the Eagle, discussed the April municipal elections in-detail Saturday morning on 939 the Eagle's “CEO Roundtable.” Murphy tells host Fred Parry that police and the Laborers Union are unhappy with both Mayor Buffaloe and with Fourth Ward Councilman Nick Foster, who is also seeking re-election in April. Murphy says the fourth ward and labor support provided the votes to propel Buffaloe to victory in 2022, noting she beat businessman Randy Minchew by about 800 votes citywide. Murphy says the margin of victory for Buffaloe in the fourth ward was about 1,200 votes, adding that the Laborers Union provided a lot of support after Minchew mentioned the word “privatization” at a public meeting before the 2022 election. Mr. Parry and Mr. Murphy also discussed April's election in Columbia's third and fourth ward, and they also discussed April's Columbia school board race and Columbia Public Schools' (CPS) search for a new superintendent. Murphy tells listeners that no one has stayed elected on Columbia's school board without the blessing of the local teachers union, which is the NEA. The school board held four public forums and one online session last week aimed at gathering input on the qualities and characteristics the community wants to see in the next CPS superintendent. CPS spokeswoman Michelle Baumstark says the board will review applications this week and will screen semifinalists during the week of January 27. Mike Murphy tells listeners that the school board doesn't have a lot of experience hiring a senior executive. “They're like what do you want in a superintendent, what should we hire. They're doing this public thing and they're discussing it among themselves. Hold it. When you're going to hire a CEO (chief executive officer) of an operation like this, you evaluate what you need. You say what is it that we want, where do want to be. What's our short-term problem, what's our long-term problem,” Murphy tells listeners. He and Fred also tackled numerous other issues during the one-hour interview, including last week's week's winter weather, which has featured ice, snow, sleet and more snow and school closings across the entire 939 the Eagle mid-Missouri listening area:

The Buttonwood Agreement, as it came to be known, effectively launched the New York Stock Exchange. Signed by 24 stockbrokers on 17th May, 1792, it promised two things - that they would trade exclusively and directly with each other, and that they wouldn't undercut each other's commission. But they had no permanent building, and only a tiny number of companies to trade. So, until 1817, traders met at Tontine Coffee House at 82 Wall Street - a riotous and dynamic backdrop against which to do business. In this episode, Arion, Rebecca and Olly learn what a Buttonwood is; reveal which sitting U.S. President was the first to step foot in the NYSE; and explain what (presumably) happens in the complicated second act of ‘Hamilton'...  Further Reading: • ‘8 March 1817: the New York Stock Exchange is formed' (MoneyWeek, 2020): https://moneyweek.com/429720/8-march-1817-the-new-york-stock-exchange-is-formed • ‘The Tontine Coffee House' (Narratively, 2013): https://narratively.com/the-tontine-coffee-house/ • ‘Hidden History: Wall Street' (HISTORY): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fOPw0x0yGJc For bonus material and to support the show, visit Patreon.com/Retrospectors We'll be back tomorrow! La Finanza in Soldoni
2021-30 - Il fascino Discreto della Liquidità

La Finanza in Soldoni

Play Episode Listen Later Nov 17, 2021 3:56

Our estate vineyard is planted on the hilltop mesa overlooking the tasting room, orchard and lower vegetable gardens. The vineyard is a set of rolling and undulating hills, each planted to a grape varietal best suited to that particular location. The vines are all planted on their own roots, set into the classic 8’x10′ spacing.Vineyard Manager Armando Zepeda has been farming the vineyard since it was first planted, and seems to know each vine personally. Armando is joined in the vineyard by soil consultant Stan Kadota and viticulturist Francisco Ramirez.Harvest generally begins in September of each year, followed by the planting of a cover crop of barley, sweet pea and fava beans for the winter months. January brings the pruning crew, with each vine cane-pruned, with bud-break generally arriving in March, fruit set in May and veraison in July/August.The vineyard map shows the changes over the years. The original vineyard plan was relatively simple, with largish blocks containing a single grape varietal: Semillon, Sauvignon Blanc, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon. This reflects our original focus on Bordeaux-style wines.Over the years, our understanding of what grows well in our part of Santa Ynez Valley and our tastes in wine have evolved and we have grafted some of the original vines to other varietals. The biggest change is the addition of the Rhône varietals Syrah, Grenache Noir, Grenache Blanc and Viognier. Malbec was added to our palette of red Bordeaux reds and the Musque clone of Sauvignon Blanc added to give greater complexity and aromatics, and a bit of Chenin Blanc planted in 2017.

Planting Pinellas
You Could Have it Made in the Shade

Planting Pinellas

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 16, 2013

During the summer when the heat is stifling, it’s important to take advantage of shade when you are outdoors.  If your yard has no shade trees you may not have much respite from the heat. Shade on your home and air conditioner may also decrease your energy costs in the summer.  With all of these benefits you may be considering planting shade trees on your property.  Planting a tree is a (hopefully) long-term commitment so you want to choose the right tree from the start.  If you choose an evergreen tree you will have shade year-round while deciduous trees will shade your house in summer but allow the sun to warm your house in winter when they lose their leaves.  You can plant shade trees at any time of year; just be sure to follow UF recommendations for proper planting practices.   To learn more about these practices visit Planting and Establishing Trees at http://edis.ifas.ufl.edu/pdffiles/EP/EP31400.pdf. Pinellas County is unique in several ways- most of us have smaller lots to work with, some have salt breezes from the water to contend with, and we all have wind storms.  You may be wondering what shade trees can we plant here that will thrive in our unique environment?  A favorite shade tree in our county is the Live Oak, Quercus virginiana (large tree, zones 8-11).  Live oak is a great choice but grows very large- up to 40 to 60 feet in height with a 60 to 100 foot spread.  It is drought and salt tolerant as well as wind resistant, which is why it’s a popular choice if you have the room. Sparkleberry, Vaccineum arboreumSweetgum, Liquidambar styracifluaIf you have a moist but well-drained site and space you could consider Sweetgum, Liquidambar styraciflua (large tree, zones 5b-10a) or Sparkleberry, Vaccinium arboreum (small tree, zones 7-10).  These two choices are deciduous, so they will lose their leaves in winter when you would probably prefer more sun anyway.  Their leaves also turn beautiful colors before they fall bringing seasonal color to your landscape.  Sparkleberry has high wind resistance and sweetgum is considered to have medium-high wind resistance.  Sparkleberry also flowers profusely if grown in full sun.Silver variety of Buttonwood, Conocarpus erectusFor smaller property with drier conditions you might consider the following small trees, all of which are salt and drought tolerant and have high wind resistance: Buttonwood, Conocarpus erectus (small tree, zones 10a-11), Simpson’s Stopper, Myrcianthes fragrans (small tree, zones 9-11), and Yaupon Holly, Ilex vomitoria (small tree, zones 7-10).  These three choices are all evergreen and will provide year-round shade.  All three of these choices can be grown as a large shrub or a small tree.  Each of these have unique characteristics that take them beyond a simple shade tree: Buttonwood has a silver variety that has silvery leaves that shimmer in the sun and the wind, Simpson’s Stopper has reddish, flaking showy bark and Yaupon Holly produces beautiful red fruit in the fall and winter on the female plants (males must be present for fruit production). Yaupon Holly, Ilex VomitoriaYaupon Holly fruitThe right shade tree for you may not be on this short list, but remember to consider size, evergreen vs. deciduous, color, seasonal interest, and match growing conditions to your site conditions for the greatest chance of success.  For more guidance with this and other plant choices in your landscape please visit the interactive plant selector Florida-friendly Plant Database at http://floridayards.org/fyplants/.  For information on the health and maintenance of shade trees please visit: http://hort.ifas.ufl.edu/woody/maintenance.shtml.*Northern Pinellas County is in zone 9b, central and southern Pinellas County is zone 10a.
