Giorgia Meloni acaba de cumplir tres años en el cargo, un hito notable en un país como Italia, caracterizado desde hace décadas por la inestabilidad política y los gobiernos efímeros. Desde el final de la segunda guerra mundial sólo Silvio Berlusconi ha conseguido superar los tres años en el Palazzo Chigi. Si Meloni se mantiene otros diez meses más le igualará. Es muy posible que así sea porque goza de una posición sólida, su popularidad está por encima del 40%, un porcentaje de aprobación mucho más elevado que el de Emmanuel Macron, Keir Starmer o Pedro Sánchez. Italia, antes un dolor de cabeza para Bruselas por sus vaivenes políticos y económicos, es ahora todo un modelo a seguir. En estos tres años Meloni ha reducido el déficit público a la mitad, los rendimientos de los bonos a 10 años han bajado hasta situarse a la par de los de Francia, y el desempleo ha pasado del 8% al 6%, lo que está animando la recaudación fiscal. En septiembre la agencia Fitch mejoró la calificación crediticia del país precisamente por eso, porque el cuadro macroeconómico pinta mejor que el de otros países europeos. Sólo la monstruosa deuda pública, del 137% sobre PIB, ensombrece el panorama. Meloni se las ha apañado para transformar en muy poco tiempo la imagen internacional de Italia, especialmente si lo comparamos con el caos político en el que se han sumido sus vecinos franceses, que coleccionan primeros ministros, protestas callejeras y mociones de censura en el parlamento. La coalición de Meloni, que ganó en 2022 con el 44% de los votos, mantiene su ventaja en las encuestas. Esto es así porque ha sabido equilibrar su base electoral más dura con cierto pragmatismo que tranquiliza a los moderados y a Bruselas. Aunque en el pasado, cuando estaba en la oposición, criticaba sin piedad a la Unión Europea, ahora prioriza el control del déficit y ha desarrollado una relación muy constructiva con Ursula von der Leyen. En el interior da satisfacción a sus votantes con medidas típicamente conservadoras como los límites que ha impuesto al aborto pero sin derogar la ley de 1978, ha convertido en delito la gestación subrogada y ha endurecido las penas contra quienes atenten contra la policía. Su política migratoria no es tan agresiva como se esperaba, pero ha reducido las llegadas gracias a un acuerdo con Túnez, que la Unión Europea ha firmado en su nombre. Eso sí, su plan de procesar las solicitudes de asilo en Albania no ha terminado de salir. Sus críticas al Pacto Verde de la UE han encontrado eco en otras partes de Europa, especialmente en Alemania, donde el canciller Friedrich Merz se ha convertido en su aliado. Su éxito es innegable, pero tiene por delante algunos escollos como el problema del raquítico crecimiento económico de Italia. La economía no se ha recuperado del todo del impacto de la pandemia y la inflación que le siguió. Sus aliados de la Liga le buscan algunos problemas en el extranjero, pero ha conseguido domar a Matteo Salvini y ponerle esencialmente a su servicio. Por suerte para ella la oposición de izquierda está dividida y desconectada de las preocupaciones del italiano medio. Su sentido práctico quizá no apasione a la mayoría, pero si parece convencerles. Es quizá la opción menos mala posible y eso mismo es lo que hace que se mantenga en el poder. Nick didn't finish until early Saturday but was already half-way through his second reading via audiobook by Sunday night.John didn't especially enjoy reading the book as fast as he did; Nick was frustrated that he could not read it faster than he did. Afgelopen week verscheen Het kon minder, een boek over Johan Remkes. Het is genieten van de ‘woordkarige’ liberaal die veel meemaakte en dat broodnuchter analyseert. Zijn belevenissen met de LPF in 2002 waren afdoende om in 2024 te bedanken voor het premierschap. Tweede genre is de 'ideologische preekbeurt'. Die kent in ons land een grote traditie. Henri Bontenbal durft een nieuwe poging en een doortimmerd betoog over zijn visie is zeker welkom. Maar het zijn grote schoenen die hij heeft te vullen: Kuyper, Alexander de Savornin Lohman, paus Leo XIII en Sybrand Buma. Collega-leiders die zulke preekbeurten schreven waren Vladimir Lenin, Pieter Jelles Troelstra, Michail Gorbatsjov en Frits Bolkestein. En ook Pim Fortuyn en later Martin Bosma. Het derde boekengenre is 'testimonium van onafhankelijk denken'. Toen hij nog net CDA’er was gaf Pieter Omtzigt dat af. Vervolgens noemde hij zijn eigen nieuwe partij naar de titel van het boek. Zulke boeken verschijnen vaker. Van Bij1-ideoloog Willem Schinkel tot communistische rivaal van Stalin, Leon Trotski. En Barack Obama die in 'Dromen van mijn vader' schetste hoe anders hij was en toch oer-Amerikaans. Het vierde genre is: boeken die 'eigenaarschap claimen'. Voor velen werd Pim Fortuyn ziener en profeet toen hij vanaf 1997 begon te publiceren over 'de islamisering'. Dit thema werd voor altijd het zijne. Caroline van der Plas claimde met haar boek 'gezond verstand', gewoonheid en ruraal sentiment. Silvio Berlusconi werd fameus door een gratis full colour feestboek dat zijn successen in zaken, sport, liefde en politiek lef als vanzelfsprekendheid claimde. Het vijfde genre? Het door en door politieke boek van een politiek leider die over iets totaal on-politieks schrijft. Oud-premier Dries van Agt en zijn liefde voor Japanse finesse. Voormalig EU-president Herman van Rompuy als dichter in het middeleeuwse genre van de oosterse Haiku. Valéry Giscard d'Estaing met die novelle over zijn liefdesaffaire met Lady Di. En Rob Jettens Hoe het wel kan is een wat poëtische bundel van jeugddromen en grote ambities – hij wil de Cornelis Lely van de 21e eeuw zijn. PSD face apel la decență, dar cine s-a lepădat de fapt de Ion Iliescu? Cum l-au executat fără jenă „tovarășii de drum” din Kiseleff (HotNews) - Motivul real pentru care PSD refuză să mai participe la ședința coaliției, acuzând USR de ”lipsă de respect” față de Ion Iliescu (G4Media) - Moartea lui Ion Iliescu şi momentul de singurătate al României. De ce marile ţări nu au trimis niciun mesaj de condoleanţe, cu excepţia Ambasadei Federaţiei Ruse (Ziarul Financiar) Ultima „oprire” la Cotroceni a lui Ion Iliescu: scandal politic, reticență și nostalgie după primul președinte postcomunist (Libertatea) Ion Iliescu rămâne un fost președinte care continuă să dividă societatea și clasa politică și după moarte. Funeraliile sale au dus la un scandal politic monstru, în timp ce unele personalități publice au ales să-i cinstească memoria, în frunte cu Emil Constantinescu și Traian Băsescu, iar alții au absentat, fie din reticență politică, fie din alte motive. Au urmat câțiva reprezentanți ai Guvernului, în frunte cu Ilie Bolojan (PNL) și Cătălin Predoiu (vicepremier), alături de Petre Florin Manole și Alexandru Rogobete, ultimii fiind miniștri PSD. De altfel, Bolojan și Predoiu au fost singurii liberali prezenți, pe lângă primarul interimar al Capitalei, Stelian Bujduveanu. În perioada în care a fost deschis accesul pentru exprimarea condoleanțelor, printre cei care nu au venit au fost Klaus Iohannis (fost președinte), Petre Roman (fost premier), Theodor Stolojan (fost premier), Adrian Năstase (fost premier) sau Călin Popescu Tăriceanu (fost premier). Poate cea mai importantă absență a fost cea a Ninei Iliescu, soția lui Ion Iliescu timp de 74 de ani. Nu în ultimul rând, nu a venit nici președintele în exercițiu Nicușor Dan. Spre deosebire de funeraliile pentru regele Mihai, în cazul lui Ion Iliescu, numărul celor care au vrut să treacă să-și ia „adio” de la primul președinte al României de după 1989 a fost infinit mai mic. Coada din fața Palatului Cotroceni, la intrarea Leu, nu depășea mai mult de 50 de metri, oamenii fiind grupați mai ales doi câte doi. Lipsa de identitate, de valori și principii solide, prăbușirea noului PSD în sondaje, îi obligă pe Sorin Grindeanu, Marcel Ciolacu sau Victor Ponta să se lipească de imaginea unui fost președinte cu care nu au împărțit vreo idee, cu care nu au mai nimic în comun.  În Kiseleff, într-o adevărată procesiune de ipocrizie, liderii PSD lansează mesaje elogioase în care se feresc să vorbească despre crimele și victimele de la Revoluție, Mineriade sau vreo pată care ar putea să întineze imaginea lui Ion Iliescu. Papa Ioan Paul al II-lea, care a pus umărul serios la prăbuşirea comunismului, şi pe care Iliescu l-a întâlnit de cinci ori la Vatican a murit în 2005. Elisabeta a II-a pe care a întâlnit-o la Londra, în 2004, a murit în 2022. Fostul premier italian, Silvio Berlusconi, cu care s-a întâlnit în 2004, s-a stins şi el acum trei ani. Mai sunt în viaţă Vladimir Putin cu care s-a întâlnit la Moscova în 2003, dar care este acum ocupat cu războiul, fostul cancelar german Gerhard Schroeder (care a venit la Bucureşti în 2004), fostul prinţ Charles, actualul monarh al Marii Britanii, George al III-lea sau George W. Bush, preşedintele american pe care Iliescu la întâlnit atât la Washingron cât şi la Bucureşti (în 2002). De trei luni de la schimbarea puterii, nicio delegaţie străină nu a vizitat Bucureştiul. Nici la nivel de miniştri, cu atât mai puţin la nivel de prim-miniştri sau preşedinţi. Nu este, aparent, nicio legătură între cele două situaţii. Dar rămâne sentimentul unei singurătăţi: nu te caută nimeni nici când ţi-e bine nici când ţi-e rău.
