She was an Atlanta debutante. She has never had a glass of alcohol, a cigarette, or tried an illegal drug. Laws was born in a car and adopted at birth. Her adoptive brother was killed at 16, her adoptive father was abusive, and her adoptive mom committed suicide. As an adult, Charlotte tracked down her natural family (mother, father, and two siblings) and enjoys a loving relationship with them to this day. Laws' natural grandfather—a lawyer who planned to run for U.S. Senate—was murdered by a devil worshipper in the 1940s. She wrote the nonfiction novel, Devil in the Basement, about his life and death. Laws is listed as the fourth most notorious party crasher in the world, beating Bill Murray, Queen Elizabeth, Serena Williams, and Lady Gaga. Party crashing began as a hobby for Laws in her teens, but later became a creative way to snag facetime with business leaders, politicians, and A-list celebrities in order to lobby for legislation, attain business partners, get exclusive interviews, and recruit charity volunteers. Laws has crashed the Secret Service four times. Laws was voted “one of the 30 fiercest women in the world” by Buzzfeed and is the recipient of the Los Angeles Animal Humanitarian Award. KPFA's weekday morning program UpFront is airing a three-part series on sex and technology produced by Bee Soll (@bee_soll), a recent intern for UpFront and UC Berkeley graduate. What do advocates for survivors of digital sexual abuse and harassment say about what needs to change in society? What role does stigma have in enabling the stealing of video content, forcing wages down in the adult film industry? And what does a “courtship expert” say is different about how young people today are meeting each other? Three experts explore these subjects. Charlotte Laws on “revenge porn” and how survivors find justice in the digital age The first installment of the series features Charlotte Laws (@CharlotteLaws), an author and advocate against “revenge porn,” in conversation with Bee Soll about misogyny in online culture. Laws struggled to find help from law enforcement when her daughter had sexually explicit material published to the internet without her consent. Together, they eventually took on Hunter Moore, a major online distributor of sexual content obtained abusively through his site Is Anyone Up?. Moore was sentenced to two years in prison. Fisher comments on how young people today are approaching courtship and marriage more carefully than previous generations, explains how flirtation works, and delves into dating apps. “If you're doing slow love, you're learning more about yourself sexually, emotionally, romantically, learning to get rid of what you don't want before you marry and develop what you do want, and negotiate these relationships in a more sensible way. Steve is the host of the podcast “Democracy in Color with Steve Phillips,” and author of the book Brown Is the New White. He says Biden's VP pick is “historic and smart” from an electoral standpoint. 0:34 – What does dating and sex look like during a pandemic, with social distancing guidelines still in place? We answer listener questions with Dr. Oliver Bacon, a physician at the San Francisco City Clinic, and Julia Feldman, a Bay Area-based sex educator who runs the sex education consultancy Giving The Talk. When it comes to dating, Julia advises people to “take the time to cultivate trust” before initiating any sort of intimacy. 1:08 – Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot imposed lockdown measures in response to mass protests against police violence and repression in the city. Aislinn Pulley, co-executive director of the Chicago Torture Justice Center, describes what's happening on the ground. She says Mayor Lightfoot is rejecting the demands of the movement against police violence, fueling ongoing protests amid a “continuation and escalation of police repression.” 1:19 – As Covid-19 continues to surge worldwide, low and middle income countries will likely experience heightened challenges in the fight against HIV, tuberculosis and malaria transmission. Dr. Britta Jewell (@brittajewell) is an epidemiologist at Imperial College London and coauthor of a new study in The Lancet modeling how the COVID-19 pandemic will affect the prevention and treatment of these diseases. Dr. Jewell says countries must continue to focus on all of these diseases, not just COVID. 1:33 – We turn to a series on sex and technology, produced by Elizabeth “Bee” Soll (@bee_soll), a recent intern for UpFront and UC Berkeley graduate.
