I met Mark Gauthier at our VIP lunch on Tru316 Day 2025 in Orlando. He is Vice President and US National Director of Cru. What a delightful brother in the Lord! At that same table was Dr. Jennifer Holloran, President/CEO of American Bible Society, and former COO of Wycliffe Bible Translators USA. Later that day she gave the Keynote Address. My wife, Dr. Joy Fleming and I, and the Tru316 Foundation team, had gathered that day to honor Judy Douglass with the presentation of the 2025 Tru316 Medallion Award for her lifetime of ministry, especially in encouraging women and men around the world to energetically use the gifts God has given to each one. This episode of The Eden Podcast, and the ones to come, we will present highlights from our Celebration held in the Bill Bright Strategy Center at the Headquarters of Campus Crusade for Christ/Cru. We are grateful for their hosting us and for the Jesus Video Staff for recording the event! Special thanks to Judy, Diane, Andrea, Sam, Mimi, April and more! When Josh Newell started with The Jesus Film Project in 1998, the movie had already been circling the globe for nearly 20 years. Filmed on location in Israel and starring local actors, the impact of the two-and-a-half-hour film was only beginning. Today, The Jesus Film Project has materials available in 2,033 languages. The original film has been joined by a host of audio and video productions, that have been experienced by 10.5 billion people. Radu and Liuda Cucos have been full-time missionaries with Campus Crusade for Christ (CRU) for over 20 years to the Republic of Moldova. Moldova is the little country between Ukraine and Romania. Before the war in Ukraine, Moldova has been the poorest country in all of Europe. The average income in the city is around $350 per month. Therefore, many people work outside of the country to provide for their families. This leaves spouses and children without the companionship and home structure needed to create and sustain a solid home environment. This also gives rise to a divorce rate of over 55%. Right now, the evangelical Christians only make up 2% of the population with an uphill battle to share the love of Jesus and what it means to live in holiness as they teach, new and old believers alike, to follow the teachings of Jesus. However, it is evident that God is alive and working in the ministries of dedicated missionaries like Radu and Liuda, who are committed to Jesus as they strive to become more like Him in a country where people have little hope and need a savior. These are caring people, which has been proven by the humanitarian care given to over 300,000 Ukrainian refugees fleeing for their lives. Our Bible discussion will be based on Ehpesians 4:17-32. Marilyn Adamson talked about her work with Campus Crusade for Christ (Cru) and EveryStudent.com, a website full of resources on questions about life and God. Marilyn Adamson graduated from Drake University with a bachelor's degree in Journalism. A former atheist, Marilyn Adamson joined Cru (Campus Crusade for Christ) hoping to reach as many people as possible with the gospel. She created and currently directs what has become Cru's primary evangelism and discipleship global digital strategy. This evangelistic website is available in many languages and was visited by over 50 million people just last year. More than 2,000 people each day ask Jesus into their lives through it. She also built a very in-depth growth path for new believers.
There's a crisis in the West today—a crisis of happiness. Both sociological research and statistics such as the rise in the so-called “deaths of despair,” paint a picture of a society that is wrestling with a lack of satisfaction in spite of its decadence. This dilemma and its solution has been debated by scholars, psychologists, pundits and philosophers. My guest on today's show says that the dilemma will not be solved unless we consider how Christianity offers a life of meaning. His name is J. P. Moreland and he wrote a book called The God Question on how Christianity invites us to “a full life, to an adventure, filled with meaning and drama.” J. P. Moreland (PhD, University of Southern California) is distinguished professor of philosophy at Talbot School of Theology, Biola University, in La Mirada, California. He has written or contributed to over ninety-five books, including The God Conversation, Philosophical Foundations for a Christian Worldview, In Search of a Confident Faith, and Love Your God With All Your Mind. Throughout his career Moreland has co-planted three churches, spoken and debated on over 200 college campuses around the country, and served with Campus Crusade for Christ (Cru) for ten years. Moreland's ideas have been covered by both popular religious and non-religious outlets, including the New Scientist, Christianity Today, PBS's "Closer to Truth," and WORLD magazine. He was selected in August 2016 by The Best Schools as one of the 50 most influential living philosophers. Todd Harper, one of the 4 cofounders of Generous Giving, sat down with us to share not only his incredible personal story, but the entire foundation story of Generous Giving. From a young age, Todd was fascinated by money, eventually dreaming of becoming a millionaire by 30. But God had a very different plan for his life. After a number of years in campus ministry, Todd's life intersected with a couple of key individuals whose lives were marked by extreme generosity. As he carefully watched how their lives differed from those around them, his curiosity eventually grew into the foundation of Generous Giving. Generous Giving's purpose is to create environments where people can experience and ask questions about generosity in a safe, encouraging way. Generous Giving is fully funded by the Maclellan Foundation, so they never have to ask for donations in return. Their mission is simply to invite Christians into a spirit-led commitment to generosity in order to fill them with a newfound freedom and purpose when it comes to wealth. Few organizations have had a greater impact on reframing the concept of generosity in the American church, and we were blessed to be able to sit down with Todd to hear the whole story. You certainly won't want to miss this one. QUOTES TO REMEMBER “If we really come to understand God's plan for our lives, then living into that plan is the most obvious, natural way to live.” “What I felt like God was asking me to give up was my dream to be a millionaire by 30.” “I'm an eternal investment advisor, I help people lay up treasure in heaven.” “The essence of what we started with is still the essence of what we do, which is to tell compelling stories and ask questions.” “It's so easy to be convinced that what the world is selling 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year is legit – that bigger, better, faster makes you happy.” “The Holy Spirit flips the switch for people from ‘ought to' to ‘get to' in their giving.” “Desire is so much more powerful than duty.” “Being around generous people is just stinkin contagious.” “People who are giving their lives away for the sake of others – there is a joy and authenticity in their experience of life that is attractive.” “I've never met an unhappy generous person.” “This orientation towards others, this orientation towards giving, really is the thing that brings life and joy.” “Because of my orientation to always wanting more, the notion of what I had being enough created a sense of freedom and contentment that I never would have predicted.” “I don't always need to figure out how to make more, or save more, or create more for the future.” “I think many of the most generous families I know have implemented some version of a finish line.” “The idea of establishing limits to create freedom is a very powerful idea and it's rarely implemented in the financial space.” “The more dependant I am on God, the better of a place I'm in.” “I'm not sure God ever wants us to get to the place where we are financially independent.” LINKS FROM THE SHOW Generous Giving Generous Giving's Journey of Generosity retreats Generous Giving's Celebration of Generosity annual conference Campus Crusade for Christ (Cru) – college campus ministry Money, Possessions, and Eternity by Randy Alcorn Hugh Maclellan and the Maclellan Foundation Mover of Men and Mountains by R.G. As recently as five years ago, the word socialism was still considered something of a byword in the United States. No mainstream political candidate (or at least, very few) would have wanted to have the title "socialist" attached to his or her name. Today, however, is a different story. Socialism is gaining in popularity, even among evangelicals. So what should Christians make of socialism and its cousin, communism? How do these economic systems fit within the bounds of the biblical worldview? To help us grasp a biblical perspective on socialism and communism, Joel Settecase's guest is Gábor Grész. Gabor (ThM, Karoli Gaspar University of Budapest), grew up in the communist Hungary, not hearing and knowing anything about Jesus. He became a believer at age 13 and was one of the first students to get involved in the underground ministry of Campus Crusade for Christ (Cru) during communism in 1983/84. He is the co-founder and co-author of the Bible-based educational program called “Youth at the Threshold of Life” (YTL), used in 62 countries to train thousands of educators and expose them to the Gospel. Gabor also is the co-author with Dave Robinson of the book, “The Outrageous Promise.” Gabor served as the National Director for Cru Hungary between 2004-2017, and is currently serving on the Cru City team to help develop new evangelistic strategies and expand YTL globally, influencing the education domain of the society. Gabor is an ordained presbyterian minister and the co-founder and church planter of Rosegarden Baptist Church of Budapest. He joins Joel to discuss communism and socialism from a biblical perspective. Jeff Pickering and Travis Wussow welcome Charles Hedman, a pastor and elder from Capitol Hill Baptist Church, to the show to talk about the journey this church took to meet again in D.C. during the pandemic. This conversation also happens to come while the U.S. Senate is considering the Supreme Court nomination of Judge Amy Coney Barrett. Charles is also an attorney, and a graduate of Notre Dame Law School, where, you guessed it, Amy Coney Barrett was one of his professors. So we had to start today's conversation about his experiences with Judge Barrett.Guest BiographyCharles Hedman was born and raised in South Bend, Indiana. After growing up a devout Catholic, Charles came to a definitive understanding and belief in the gospel during his senior year in college at the University of Notre Dame. After graduation, Charles attended Notre Dame Law School and, later, worked as a corporate litigation attorney in Indianapolis, Indiana. Called into ministry, Charles left the practice of law and joined the staff of Campus Crusade for Christ (“Cru”) in 2009, working there until 2013. In addition to earning his B.A. and J.D., Charles has also earned Masters degrees in Teaching and Divinity from the University of Southern California and The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, respectively, and is currently completing a Masters degree in Theology from Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary. This week on Table Talk, Chel and Jan introduce our series on discipleship and mentorship. Our producer Michelle interviews her college mentor Jane Armstrong. Jane is now in her 43rd year (40 years at Miami University in Columbus, Ohio) with Campus Crusade for Christ (CRU) and loves the ability to help others know how they can reconnect to God, be empowered to love others and be restored to purpose through a relationship with Jesus Christ. You won't want to miss Jane give her testimony and talk about what mentorship looks like now on a secular college campus. Jane answers many of our questions including - "What are some of the biggest challenges you think women are facing in college today?", "What do you think is the key to having a sustainable mentor relationship?", "What advice would you give a young woman who really wants to pursue the Lord?" etc. Jane describes a verse that God has used to speak to her recently - Psalm 23: “The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not be in want...He restores my soul. He leads me in paths of righteousness for his name's sake.” Jane says she read the original Hebrew for the word “paths” and it also means “tracks” – made her think of animal tracks. Animal tracks aren’t always easy to see. It's certainly not a paved road and what that means is the path is not always the paved path, but you have to really look for it. Study, search, look for the tracks. Join us this week as we hear from the best of the best, Jane Armstrong. Theology For the Rest of Us | Quick Answers to the Questions About God and the Bible
In this episode Kenny interviews world-renowned philosopher and best-selling author J.P. Moreland about his new book "Scientism and Secularism." The book is about some of the worldviews that have now become mainstream and dominant in the worlds of philosophies and science, that Dr. Moreland says are incoherent and detrimental. In the interview Dr. Moreland unpacks the concept of scientism as being the philosophy that all data and information must directly come from a genre of science in order for it to be considered viable or trustworthy in an apologetics dialogue. Dr. Moreland explains why this philosophy ought to be rejected and how to respond to this way of thinking. Dr. Moreland asserts that data from many other sources ought to be considered in this conversations, including data from the worlds of politics, ethics, morality, psychology, and religion. J.P. Moreland is the Distinguished Professor of Philosophy at Talbot School of Theology at Biola University in La Mirada, California. He's taught there for more than 35 years. Relationships are tricky (major understatement). I think today's podcast with my pastor's wife, Vela Tomba, will give us words & imagery to help alleviate some of the trickiness. Vela has been married to Neil for 30 years, is the mom to three grown girls and grandmother to one adorable granddaughter. She served with Campus Crusade for Christ (Cru) before staying home full-time. Last summer Vela guest posted a 3-part series on the concept of “Hula Hoop-o-logy” (read the series here) Honestly? Her thoughts on this topic have helped all (absolutely all) my relationships. In this episode we discuss: What it means to stay in your “hula hoop” Why we need to stay out of others' hoops How to transition our children from our hoop (birth) to their own (jr. high-college) Physical hoop issues vs emotional hoop issues Whether or not it is a mom's job to make her kids happy Interacting with husband in light of “hula hoop-o-logy”–reflective listening Handling a variety of relationships with this mindset–>adult children & their spouses; grandchildren; extended family Difference between hula-hoops and “Boundaries” A Christian's responsibility to non-believers in relation to hoops Show Notes: Campus Crusade for Christ (Cru) “Boundaries” by Henry Cloud & John Townsend “Father of the Bride” Do you struggle with staying out of others' hoops? Which relationship challenges you the most?
