The Presidential power to nominate a Supreme Court justice and Senate's power to confirm that nomination is one of the pillars of our country's checks-and-balances system. Yet, the politics and tensions over this process has escalated over recent years. The sudden death of Antonin Scalia in early 2016 led to a successful effort to block Obama's nominee, Merrick Garland-setting up a fierce debate over a political "lame duck" period of presidential nominations to the Supreme Court.rnrnThen just 46 days before the 2020 Presidential Election, tensions further escalated during an expedited process to confirm Justice Amy Coney Barrett after the death of Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg.rnrnNow, Justice Stephen Breyer has announced his retirement and President Joe Biden fulfilled a campaign promise to nominate a woman of color to the nation's highest court. If confirmed, Ketanji Brown Jackson would become the first Black woman to serve on the Supreme Court--adding yet another layer to the debate during a time when race and equity efforts are facing increasing attacks.rnrnWhat obstacles and opportunities does the Biden Administration face to confirm Ketanji Brown Jackson? And what is the future of Supreme Court and its influence in this era of politics?rnrnJoin us in-person at the Happy Dog in Gordon Square as we learn from local experts on what is at stake with the upcoming Supreme Court confirmation.

Joe Biden made history by promising to name a black woman to the highest court during his presidential campaign. With Justice Stephen Breyer set to retire soon, Biden is expected to fulfill the promise he first made in South Carolina. Some are thrilled at the prospect of having a more diverse Supreme Court, while others feel that he is pandering to black voters. As the battle over the next justice for the Supreme Court ignites debate on race and representation, what perspectives do you hold on the issue? In today's episode of the Pod Bless America Podcast, Jim and Dan talk about Joe Biden's nominees to the Supreme Court. They will highlight what people think about the SCOTUS pick, how they feel about it, and how the federal government is unceasingly failing the country. We have a problem with it because you've just excluded everybody, everybody in the country from being a Supreme court justice because you're gonna pick up a black woman. I don't care if it's a black woman. But put her up against the white guy, put her up against the Hispanic chick, put her up against my Tongan girl and let's take the best one. Let's take who's gonna do the best job. Not because she's black and not because she's a woman." - Jim Larkin 11:57 - "He (Justice Breyer) would have liked to have announced his retirement at the end of the term, which would be June or July. That's pushed way too close to the midterms. And in the midterms, you have 34 Senate seats up in November, 20 Republicans, 14 Democrats. And if they lose the house, they lose the Senate, it's all Republican-controlled now. And then he retires, with zero chance that there's a nominee getting through." - Jim Larkin and Dan Wilkinson Jr. 27:50 - He (Joe Biden) needs to do something to get those people back in. They need something right now to try to bring them back in, to get those votes because they know they're about to get wrecked in May and probably November." - Jim Larkin 29:24 - "Every candidate should be solely vetted on their writings and their decisions as it relates to the United States Constitution. It shouldn't matter what color you are. It shouldn't matter what sex you are. Whoever is the most constitutional candidate should get the nod." - Jim Larkin Follow the Pod Bless America Podcast on GETTR Engage with Pod Bless America PodcastEmail: jim@pbapodcast.comFacebook Listen to more episodes of the Pod Bless America PodcastApple PodcastsSpotifyGoogle Podcasts

If you were waiting for the right moment to bust out your stupid hat and hoist your sign, ladies, this is it. You've been weirdly silent on the trans-in-women's-sports take over, and we haven't heard a peep from you regarding the dire situation facing women and girls in Afghanistan. Are you really this pathetic and pointless, seeking to shriek at the sky only during the Supreme Court Nomination hearings? Are you really this useless or are you unsure of what to do when faced with actual oppression? Also: We must be over the target for a train wreck as big as the one occurring in Afghanistan to take place. They need this kind of chaos and butchery to captivate the American minds in order to obfuscate the truth and results of the AZ audit.
Jeff Pickering and Travis Wussow welcome Charles Hedman, a pastor and elder from Capitol Hill Baptist Church, to the show to talk about the journey this church took to meet again in D.C. during the pandemic. This conversation also happens to come while the U.S. Senate is considering the Supreme Court nomination of Judge Amy Coney Barrett. Charles is also an attorney, and a graduate of Notre Dame Law School, where, you guessed it, Amy Coney Barrett was one of his professors. So we had to start today's conversation about his experiences with Judge Barrett.Guest BiographyCharles Hedman was born and raised in South Bend, Indiana. After growing up a devout Catholic, Charles came to a definitive understanding and belief in the gospel during his senior year in college at the University of Notre Dame. After graduation, Charles attended Notre Dame Law School and, later, worked as a corporate litigation attorney in Indianapolis, Indiana. Called into ministry, Charles left the practice of law and joined the staff of Campus Crusade for Christ (“Cru”) in 2009, working there until 2013. In addition to earning his B.A. and J.D., Charles has also earned Masters degrees in Teaching and Divinity from the University of Southern California and The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, respectively, and is currently completing a Masters degree in Theology from Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary. Charles joined the staff of CHBC as a Pastoral Assistant in September of 2014. He and his wife Jamie live on Capitol Hill with their children.Resources from the ConversationRead Jeff's articles on CHBC's journeyWhy I've looked forward to church outside during COVID-19Explainer: Religious liberty and Capitol Hill Baptist Church's lawsuit in Washington, D.C.Update: Capitol Hill Baptist wins in District CourtA Q&A for churches on government restrictions with a religious liberty attorneyHow do you know if your religious liberty is violated?Download the Courage and Civility Church KitSubscribe to ERLC's Policy Newsletter
