Drug and alcohol abusers struggle to give up addictions that hurt their bodies and tear apart families and friendships. And many of us have unhealthy excess weight that we could lose if only we would eat right and exercise more. So why don’t we do it? Stress is a big part of the answer. Lack support Tips on breaking a bad habit For those in infant stages or non-threatening levels. (Jan) Avoid tempting situations. If you always stop for a donut on your way to work, try a different route. Keep fatty foods, cigarettes, alcohol and other tempting items out of your home. Replace unhealthy behaviors with healthy ones. Try exercise, a favorite hobby or spending time with family. Prepare mentally. If you can’t avoid a tempting situation, prepare yourself in advance. Think about how you want to handle it and mentally practice what you plan. Reward yourself for small steps. Give yourself a healthy treat when you’ve achieved a small goal or milestone. For those with an addiction. (Chel) Seek professional help One day at a time. Celebrate the wins, move past the losses. Commit to doing whatever it takes. For both – enlist support!!! You can overcome 1 Cor. 10:13. No temptation has overtaken you that is not common to man. God is faithful, and he will not let you be tempted beyond your ability, but with the temptation he will also provide the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. Join us this week on Table Talk as Jan and Chel discuss breaking free from competition.   SHOW NOTES Stories in the Bible: Philippians 4 And now I want to plead with those two dear women, Euodias and Syntyche. Please, please, with the Lord’s help, quarrel no more—be friends again. 3 And I ask you, my true teammate, to help these women, for they worked side by side with me in telling the Good News to others; and they worked with Clement, too, and the rest of my fellow workers whose names are written in the Book of Life. 4 Always be full of joy in the Lord; I say it again, rejoice! 5 Let everyone see that you are unselfish and considerate in all you do. Remember that the Lord is coming soon. 6 Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything; tell God your needs, and don’t forget to thank him for his answers. 7 If you do this, you will experience God’s peace, which is far more wonderful than the human mind can understand. His peace will keep your thoughts and your hearts quiet and at rest as you trust in Christ Jesus. 8 And now, brothers, as I close this letter, let me say this one more thing: Fix your thoughts on what is true and good and right. Think about things that are pure and lovely, and dwell on the fine, good things in others. Think about all you can praise God for and be glad about.  Action: Don't fight – it affects our ability to share Jesus with others Instead: Trust in Christ who keeps your thoughts and hearts quiet and at rest. In God, whose word I praise, In God I trust; I will not be afraid. What can mortal man do to me? Psalm 56:3-4 Dear friends, since God so loved us, we also ought to love one another… There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear, because fear has to do with punishment. The one who fears is not made perfect in love” (1 John 4:11, 18). Isaiah 41:10 Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand. Joshua 1:9 Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be frightened, and do not be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.” Philippians 4:6 Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. Psalm 27:1 Of David. The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? The Lord is the stronghold of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?   A lot of “don’t be” but HOW? Trust that God is loving, your protector, provider, in charge Stories of fear in the Bible: Jesus Calms the Storm (Mark 4:35-41) So Do Not Fear (Isaiah 41:10)  people turning to idols in their fear… We are inclined to worry rather than pray, and we often neglect to seek God’s peace. 1 Peter 5:7, however, reminds us that although anxiety is a reality, the biblical response is absolute assurance in the strength of God’s care.    Contact us -  Facebook @tabletalkthepodcast  Instagram @tabletalkthepodcast Website www.tablegatherings.com Email connect@thetablegatherings.com Support the show: https://thetablegatherings.com/donate See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

    S1E53: Table Talk 1.53 - Goal Setting

This week on Table Talk Chel and Jan discuss setting goals.  SHOW NOTES Only 14% of us even set goals at all but most of us don’t write them down we just think about them. Those people who do write our goals down are 10X more successful than the rest of us. But sadly most of us don’t and so only 8% of us will actually achieve the goals that we think about. And 92% of New Year’s goals fail by January 15th anyway, so what’s the point? Setting goals can be beneficial for having a more productive and fulfilling life. Setting goals and making plans is wise: The plans of the diligent lead surely to abundance, but everyone who is hasty comes only to poverty. Proverbs 21:5 How to set goals God tells us how to make goals: And the Lord answered me: “Write the vision; make it plain on tablets, so he may run who reads it. For still the vision awaits its appointed time; it hastens to the end—it will not lie. If it seems slow, wait for it; it will surely come; it will not delay. Habakkuk 2:2-3 God gives us a goal: Brothers, I do not consider that I have made it my own. But one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and straining forward to what lies ahead, I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus. Philippians 3:13-14 Stories of goals in the Bible: Joseph stored up grain for 12 years for the famine. God modeled goals: God had a plan from the beginning. He started with perfection, allow for our choice to love him, Jesus, a way to redeem us, perfection established for eternity. His plan is patiently playing out He wrote it down He is patient He follows through on his plan He will complete his plan Jesus set a goal to save us all. He has a plan from the beginning. Wrote the plan in the Bible and is patiently playing out his plan.   Some questions we will discuss: What spiritual goals can we set?  How do we set goals?  What can we do to follow through and have patience?  How do we love/encourage someone who has goals well?   Contact us -  Facebook @tabletalkthepodcast  Instagram @tabletalkthepodcast Website www.tablegatherings.com Email connect@thetablegatherings.com CONTACT Support the show: https://thetablegatherings.com/donate See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

This week on Table Talk Jan, Chel and Michelle discuss spiritual warfare.   SHOWNOTES Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes. 12 For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. 13 Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand. 14 Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, 15 and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace. 16 In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. 17 Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. Jesus warned that the devil “is a liar and the father of lies” (Jn. 8:44), Therefore, laying aside falsehood, speak truth each one of you with his neighbor...” (Eph. 4:22-25). Not surprisingly, then, the very first step in arming ourselves for battle against the devil is to gird our loins with truth (Eph. 6:14). And when we engage the battle with God’s “weapons of warfare [that] are not of the flesh, but divinely powerful for the destruction of fortresses,” we attack those lies and lay waste to them, “destroying speculations and every lofty thing raised up against the knowledge of God...” (2 Cor. 10:3-5). Psalm 51:6 - you desire truth in the inner parts, wisdom in the inmost place. “We are our best selves when truth is in the deepest place.” - Tammy   Read Psalm 139 You have searched me, Lord,     and you know me. 2 You know when I sit and when I rise;     you perceive my thoughts from afar. 3 You discern my going out and my lying down;     you are familiar with all my ways. 4 Before a word is on my tongue     you, Lord, know it completely. 5 You hem me in behind and before,     and you lay your hand upon me. 6 Such knowledge is too wonderful for me,     too lofty for me to attain. 7 Where can I go from your Spirit?     Where can I flee from your presence? 8 If I go up to the heavens, you are there;     if I make my bed in the depths, you are there. 9 If I rise on the wings of the dawn,     if I settle on the far side of the sea, 10 even there your hand will guide me,     your right hand will hold me fast. 11 If I say, “Surely the darkness will hide me     and the light become night around me,” 12 even the darkness will not be dark to you;     the night will shine like the day,     for darkness is as light to you. 13 For you created my inmost being;     you knit me together in my mother’s womb. 14 I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made;     your works are wonderful,     I know that full well. My frame was not hidden from you     when I was made in the secret place,     when I was woven together in the depths of the earth. 16 Your eyes saw my unformed body;     all the days ordained for me were written in your book     before one of them came to be. 17 How precious to me are your thoughts,[a] God!     How vast is the sum of them! 18 Were I to count them,     they would outnumber the grains of sand—     when I awake, I am still with you. 19 If only you, God, would slay the wicked!     Away from me, you who are bloodthirsty! 20 They speak of you with evil intent;     your adversaries misuse your name. 21 Do I not hate those who hate you, Lord,     and abhor those who are in rebellion against you? 22 I have nothing but hatred for them;     I count them my enemies. 23 Search me, God, and know my heart;     test me and know my anxious thoughts. 24 See if there is any offensive way in me,     and lead me in the way everlasting.   Contact us -  Facebook @tabletalkthepodcast  Instagram @tabletalkthepodcast Website www.tablegatherings.com Email connect@thetablegatherings.com Support the show: https://thetablegatherings.com/donate See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Thirsty Thursdays – pray around the table Little examples – things are caught. We go to bed at night and we get up in the morning. Jan: What is your definition of mentoring? Trina: Mentoring – I’m going to be an example to you. We are going to be doing life together. Not just an appointment. You’re in my home. Monkey see monkey do. A teacher, to holding it out, bringing you along side me. I like to keep myself not just a mentor but as a mentee too. Jan: How would you break down discipleship? Trina: I really blend the two so much. I’m not sure I know where one ends and one begins. ...But for it to be successful, you really need to have a plan. They have to want to be mentored. They have to be teachable. Chel: “I sought it out. As God was calling me to this ministry I knew that I needed some support. So I asked some women if they would do it. I challenge women to do that. If you know they I want to get into discipleship, then get out your phone and go and make the call.” Jan shares with us where she started her long life of discipling.  “I knew back then I wanted to pull people together to feel the love of Jesus. Where it really started was when I was involved as a youth counselor...Back in those days it was roller skating. Just do life, be the big sister. When I decided to make it my own ministry, my own calling. I did this session with a bunch of girls. My husband did prom alternatives and he would do a prom night, and he would take them to the church and then she decided to teach them charm. Took a group of 15 girls and put them through charm classes, poise, hygiene, make-up artist, hairstylist  - at the same time teaching them their identity in Christ. There are a lot of girls in middle school and high school who don’t have that." For me I go more with what I’m called to do. I’m drawn to individuals who have the same interest, and then I pour into them. - Jan   Contact us -  Facebook @tabletalkthepodcast  Instagram @tabletalkthepodcast Website www.tablegatherings.com Email connect@thetablegatherings.com Support the show: https://thetablegatherings.com/donate See omnystudio.com/policies/listener for privacy information.

S1E37: Table Talk 1.37 - What is Discipleship

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 10, 2020 50:32

This week on Table Talk, Chel and Jan discuss the concept of discipleship and what it means to disciple others. Define discipleship Where do we find it in the Bible? Definition of Disciple is one who accepts and assists in spreading the doctrines of another. Marks of a disciple: Someone who is identified with the person of Jesus Christ—someone who will openly admit that he belongs to Christ. “Who do you say that I am?” Peter answered, “You are the Christ” (Mark 8:29) Obedient to the Word of Christ—to the Scriptures. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations . . . teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you(Matthew 28:19,20).  Bearing fruitin the work of Christ. This is to my Father’s glory, that you bear much fruit, showing yourselves to be my disciples(John 15:8).  Christlike character, the fruit of the Spirit—love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control (Galatians 5:22,23). Influencing the livesof others for Christ. You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you to go and bear fruit—fruit that will last(John 15:16 What are some examples? And how they were called. Moses & Joshua– aide to Moses, spent a lot of time together, went up with him to the mt to receive the commandments, eventually took Moses place to carry on his mission Eli & Samuel – mother dedicated Samuel to the Lord. He lived under Eli’s mentorship – living together, eating, teaching praying etc. Took over for Eli when he died as a prophet. Elijah & Elisha– God instructed Elijah to anoint Elisha his successor. “So Elisha…set out to follow Elijah and become his servant” 1 Kings 19:21 Jesus & 12 Disciples – He called them himself. They lived, traveled and worked together. Paul & Titus – Traveled with Paul bringing the Gospel. “To Titus, my true son in our common faith…” Titus 1:4 Throughout the old and new testaments – points to it both being importantand effective. If Jesus did it, we should certainly do it True discipleship is no small thing – can’t go into it with a non-committal attitude. Discipleship means dedication to cultivating a fruitful relationship that will produce a crop a hundred times over.   Why are we called? It’s God Plan - 5 great commission verses in the NT Target – the World Mark 16:15 Go into all the world and preach the gospel to all creation Archer – Jesus is the archer sending you John 20:21 – Jesus said, “Peace be with you! As the Father has sent me, I am sending you.” Bow - Holy Spirit is the power source Acts 1:8 – You will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth. Arrow – Content, Message of repentances for the forgiveness of sins Luke 24:47 – and repentance for the forgiveness of sins will be preached in his name to all nations, beginning at Jerusalem Principal of making disciples – the process Matthew 28:19-20 Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.” How do we prepare to mentor/disciple? Prepare to run the race 1 Cor 9:24-27 Purpose is for eternity – heaven will be different because of who I invest in 1 Corinthians 9:24 Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one gets the prize? Run in such a way as to get the prize. 25… They do it to get a crown that will not last, but we do it to get a crown that will last forever.  Make a plan– how to have a quiet time, how to pray, how to live like Christ 1 Corinthians 9:25 Everyone who competes in the games goes into strict training Tim 4:7 - train (gmnasayzo – gymnasium) yourself to be Godly Right perspective- Fix your eyes on Jesus, pursuing him, not comparing myself to others in this race (big names), humility I Cor 9:26-27 Therefore I do not run like someone running aimlessly; I do not fight like a boxer beating the air. 27 No, I strike a blow to my body and make it my slave so that after I have preached to others, I myself will not be disqualified for the prize.   Contact us -  Facebook @tabletalkthepodcast  Instagram @tabletalkthepodcast Website www.tablegatherings.com Email connect@thetablegatherings.com Support the show: https://thetablegatherings.com/donate See omnystudio.com/policies/listener for privacy information.

Jane is now in her 43rd year (40 years at Miami University in Columbus, Ohio) with Campus Crusade for Christ (CRU) and loves the ability to help others know how they can reconnect to God, be empowered to love others and be restored to purpose through a relationship with Jesus Christ. You won't want to miss Jane give her testimony and talk about what mentorship looks like now on a secular college campus. Jane answers many of our questions including - "What are some of the biggest challenges you think women are facing in college today?", "What do you think is the key to having a sustainable mentor relationship?", "What advice would you give a young woman who really wants to pursue the Lord?" etc. Jane describes a verse that God has used to speak to her recently - Psalm 23: “The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not be in want...He restores my soul. He leads me in paths of righteousness for his name's sake.” Jane says she read the original Hebrew for the word “paths” and it also means “tracks” – made her think of animal tracks. Animal tracks aren’t always easy to see. It's certainly not a paved road and what that means is the path is not always the paved path, but you have to really look for it. This week we discuss Biblical principles about forgiveness and offer practical advice on how to give it.  Be kind to one another, tender hearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you. Ephesians 4:32 And whenever you stand praying, forgive, if you have anything against anyone, so that your Father also who is in heaven may forgive you your trespasses. Mark 11:25  If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. 1 John 1:9    SOUNDBITES According to John Hopkins Medicine, forgiveness has a huge impact on your health All of us are in need of forgiveness. Forgiving others is a prerequisite for our own forgiveness. God gives us the ability to forgive others. After forgiveness, comes love –even if forgetting isn’t possible. How do we forgive? Rejection wounds us, sometimes deeply for a long time, but God offers freedom from rejection, how do we claim it? On this episode we search the Bible for answers and explore practical ways we can receive freedom from rejection. SCRIPTURES And if anyone will not receive you or listen to your words, shake off the dust from your feet when you leave that house or town. Matt 10:14 What can we say to these things? If God is for us , who can be against us? Romans 8:31 Cast all your anxieties on him because he cares for you.1 Peter 5:7 But I say to you, Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you. Matt 5:44 Persecuted, but not forsaken; struck down but not destroyed. 2 Cor 4:9 When he was reviled he did not revile in return; when he suffered, he did not threaten, but continued entrusting himself to him who judges justly. 1 Pet 2:23 If the world hates you, keep in mind that it hated me first. John 15:18 When the righteous cry for help, the LORD hears and delivers them out of all their troubles, The LORD is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit. Many are the afflictions of the righteous, but the lord delivers him out of them all. Psalm 34:17-20 So we can confidently say, “The Lord is my helper; I will not fear; what can man do to me? Heb 13:6 The one who hears you hears me, and the one who rejects you rejects me, and the one who rejects me rejects him who sent me. Luke 10:16 For my father and my mother have forsaken me, but theLORD will take me in. Ps. 27:10 Can a woman forget her nursing child, that she should have no compassion on the son of her womb? Even these may forget, yet I will not forget you. Isaiah 49:15 And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose. Romans 8:28 Jesus was rejected: He came to his own, and his own people did not receive him. John 1:11 Surely he has borne our griefs and carried our sorrows; yet we esteemed him stricken, smitten by God, and afflicted. But he was wounded for our transgressions; he was crushed for our iniquities; upon him was the chastisement that brought us peace, and with his stripes we are healed. All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned—every one—to his own way; and the LORD has laid on him the iniquity of us all. Isaiah 53:4-6 Rejection for your faith: Blessed are you when people hate you and when they exclude you and revile you and spurn your name as evil, on account of the Son of Man! Luke 6:22 See that you do not despise one of these little ones. For I tell you that in heaven their angels always see the face of my Father who is in heaven. Matt 18:10 But I say to you, Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you. Matt 5:44   TABLE QUESTIONS Tell us of a time you experienced rejection. Are you dealing with rejection now? How does rejection impact you? What would your life look like if you had freedom from this rejection? What scripture do you need to cling to the help you have freedom from rejection? What is the next step you need to take to gain freedom from rejection? Is there anyone you might have rejected that you need to make right? This week on Table Talk, Chel and Jan discuss freedom from shame. Shame binds us, afflicts us and even controls us, but God offers freedom from shame. On this episode we search the Bible for answers and explore practical ways we can receive freedom from our shame. Where have you experienced shame? What was at the root of your shame? –a lie you believed about yourself? What was your lie? How do you have freedom? Come to Christ–stop hiding from God, confess bitterness, weep, receive His love and rest in Him. Ask Him who you really are. Rebuke the lies–listen to the voice of Truth, and receive the comfort of His Spirit. What does the Bible say about the LIES you believe?  LIE: Fear TRUTH: There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear, because fear has to do with punishment. The one who fears is not made perfect in love.1 John 4:18 Cast all your cares on Him for He cares for you. 1 Peter 5:7 Do not be anxious about anything but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. Philippians 4:6-7 LIE: God isn’t safe TRUTH: God is light, and there is no darkness in him at all. 1 John 1:5 LIE: God left me. TRUTH: It is the LORD who goes before you. He will be with you; he will not leave you or forsake you. Do not fear or be dismayed. Deut 31:8 Be strong and courageous. Do not fear or be in dread of them, for it is the LORD your God who goes with you. He will not leave you or forsake you. Deut 31:6 LIE: God doesn’t care. TRUTH: Christ will judge the world in righteousness. Acts 17:3 LIE: I’m disgusting/it’s my fault. TRUTH: I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Wonderful are your works. Psalm 139:14 God created man in his own image; in the image of God He created him, male and female. Genesis 1:27 LIE: I’ll never get over this. TRUTH: He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds. Psalm 147: Promises for you — A heaven where this doesn’t exist –abusers aren’t in heaven. You will be a mighty instrument of redemption for others.   SOUNDBITES All shame is rooted in a lie. That lie could be different for everybody. Shame has no obvious cause. Surround yourself by people you can trust. Battle you continue to face. Can have shame because of physical abuse –what was done to you. Can have shame because of verbal abuse –what was said to you. All shame is rooted in a lie. We put on different masks –put on a mask of shame. God has freed us from shame. Enjoy the identity that God has given us and not one rooted in shame. Philippians 4:6-7 You can put yourself to shame by your own thoughts. Can be rooted in insecurities. It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery.— Galatians 5:1 Shame is slavery. It binds you, it holds you back. Hold tight to the promise that Christ has set us free. Look towards the Lord for his perfection in us and in his calling.   TABLE QUESTIONS What kinds of things do peoplehave shameover? Is there anything you are carrying shameover right now? How is your shame impacting you or affecting your relationships? What would your life look like if you didn’t carry your shame anymore? Play Episode Listen Later Jun 8, 2020 32:25

This week on Table Talk, Chel and Michelle discuss how to receive freedom from regret. Regrets are heavy burdens that God does not want us to carry. In this discussion we seek practical guidance from scripture on how to accept the freedom God give us.   How does God respond to our regret? He FORGIVES our sin: The Bible teaches us that, when we confess our sins and have faith in Christ’s sacrifice and resurrection, we become children of God (John 1:12). We are cleansed from all our unrighteousness (Colossians 1:15–22), and our salvation is eternally secure (John 10:27–30; Hebrews 7:24–25). He doesn’t condemn. Romans 8:1 — There is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.” (Titus 3:3–7; Romans 6:4). We are sinners, but we are justified. We have a shameful past, but we have a better future. We used to walk in foolishness and rebellion, but now we walk in newness of life. Philippians 3:13 — Brothers, I do not consider that I have made it my own. But one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and straining forward to what lies ahead. Isaiah 43:18-19 — Remember not the former things, nor consider the things of old. Behold, I am doing a new thing; now it springs forth, do you not perceive it? I will make a way in the wilderness and rivers in the desert. 1 John 1:9 — If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. Acts 3:1 9 — Repent, then, and turn to God, so that your sins may be wiped out, that times of refreshing may come from the Lord.   SOUNDBITES God redeems us.  Galatians 2:20  I have been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me. And the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me. And if we remain in him/in the vine we WILL bear fruit, no matter how messed up our past. We are a new creation. John 15:5 — I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing. James 1:25 tells us how we can be free from regret in the future. James 1:25 —  But whoever looks intently into the perfect law that gives freedom, and continues in it—not forgetting what they have heard, but doing it—they will be blessed in what they do. God gives us the key to a life of freedom from regret. The law of the Lord, his ways, connection to the true vine that is Jesus, this is all for our benefit. Not because God wants us to have less fun, but because he wants us to live in freedom.   DISCUSSION QUESTIONS What kinds of things do people have regret over? How do we process someone’s story? Look for attributes of God in their story. Ask God what he wants to show/tell you. Thank God for revealing himself to you through their story. Apply it to yourself – use it as a change agent. She focuses on how she made it through the tough times spiritually and how it transformed her understanding of God.     Fighting the FEAR of cancer   Fear is a theme when fighting cancer. But Jan’s fear wasn’t just about cancer, it was really a fear of death. We can’t conquer death, but Christ conquered death for us.   Jan fought the fear with scripture and prayer. She posted scripture everywhere in her home and exercised her authority over fear with prayer.    How do you know God differently because of your battle with cancer?  “The goodness of God became overwhelming to me during my fight with cancer.”    How did cancer change Jan’s ministry?  It didn’t change the fact that God was going to use her, but it changed how he would use her. Showing us that God has a path for each of us and that path is often dictated by our life experiences.   Her fight with cancer also offered Jan a healthy fear of God and she came to understand that fear of the Lord is wisdom. All other fear only brings anxiety and worry.   Soundbites:  Fear of the Lord is wisdom. The goodness of God became overwhelming to me during my fight with cancer. S1E13: Table Talk 1.13 - Mission in the Church

Play Episode Listen Later Jan 28, 2020 45:34

This week Chel and Jan discuss our mission in the Church with Pastor Phil Johnson. "Jesus is the church – Jesus and the holy spirit." We should follow scripture. "Saving the lost, bringing sheep back, developing and training so that they can then go to their neighborhood and share the same gospel they just received. When someone has a testimony it affects the people around them." - Pastor Phil Johnson                 There are so many areas in the church that people can get involved in – ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.’ Matthew 25:40 *If you don’t know what your calling is in your church pray for your pastor and pray for their spouse.   Question: "What are ways I could serve / be serving in the church?" Answer:According to the Bible, every Christian has been given at least one spiritual gift to use in service to the body of Christ. “Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God’s grace in its various forms. If anyone speaks, they should do so as one who speaks the very words of God. If anyone serves, they should do so with the strength God provides, so that in all things God may be praised through Jesus Christ. To him be the glory and the power for ever and ever. Amen” (1 Peter 4:10–11; compare Ephesians 4:11–16). So, an important step in determining how to best serve in the church is for us to discover what our spiritual gifts are. Of course, we don’t have to know what our gift is before we start getting involved in the church. In fact, we often discover our gifts in the process of serving. The spiritual gifts are listed in Romans 12: 6–8 and 1 Corinthians 12: 4–11, 28. There is a difference between the Body of Christ universal (1 Corinthians 12:12–13) and the local church Christians attend for corporate worship (Hebrews 10:25). But there is no difference in how Christians ought to use their spiritual gifts, because serving God is a twenty-four-hour proposition, not a Sunday-only enterprise. All Christians everywhere should be serving God in their local churches and looking for opportunities toserve outsidethe walls of a church building (2 Corinthians 9:12–13). It may be difficult to discover which spiritual gift(s) God has bestowed, but it’s better to serve somewhere than nowhere (Romans 12:11). Often, the discovery of gifts becomes more clear in the doing—as we serve in various jobs, we learn what we are good at and what we have a heart for (1 Chronicles 28:9). There are always more needs than willing workers; this was true in Christ’s day and is still true today (Matthew 9:37). It’s never a problem to find a need in the local church. From evangelizing the community (which all Christians are called to do,Acts 1:8) to cleaning the bathrooms, there is always plenty of work to be done. It is good to inquire of the church leadership regarding the needs of the church. Have a conversation with the pastor and elders about what jobs are open and how they may or may not be suited for you.   How to reach us -  connect@thetablegatherings.com tabletalk@thetablegatherings.com   Support the show.
