I Guess I'll Do It with Pat House

Both a stand-up comic AND pastor, Gordon Douglas has had an interesting career. From the nightclubs in Philadelphia to Hollywood to ministry, we discuss clean comedy and the Christian Comedy Association and he shares a hilarious story about dropping his sermon notes in an open grave. Pat House is a nationally-touring comedian based out of Philadelphia. A regular performer in comedy clubs, casinos, and theaters all over the country, Pat has been a choice opener for Sebastian Maniscalco, Tom Segura, and Dan Cummins. He recorded his first album Biggest Thing in 2013, and his latest album Heard Enough Yesterday, hit #1 on the iTunes comedy charts. Both can be heard on iTunes, Amazon, and Pandora.Gordon Douglas has been married to his wife Dawn for over 35 years. They have five natural children and have opened their hearts and home to a whole lot more. But most importantly, Gordon is someone who lives and loves to laugh! In the 70's, his comedy skills took him from the nightclubs in Philadelphia to Hollywood. Then he ended up in ministry! A wild thought soon came to him. He didn't have to give up comedy for the ministry, he can do both - often at the same time!So since returning to the comedy world in 1995, Gordon has been in 41 states and 4 countries and has been featured on a variety of television and radio programs. What makes Gordon different? His unique ability to connect with everyone from teenagers to senior citizens. He has performed on both Royal Caribbean and Carnival cruise lines as well as countless colleges, comedy clubs, and corporate events with mixture of fun and faith, love and laughter.Learning from his comedy heroes Jonathan Winters and Red Skeleton, Gordon's comedy mixes real life stories with “off the wall” physical comedy and his own hilarious view of life. You will relate to his side splitting stories from his life- like dropping the sermon notes into the grave at his first funeral to his demonstration of changing his first diaper, to his now famous “pantyhose dance” that has folks rolling in the aisles. He helps us see the funny things all around us and find joy no matter what we are going through. But he is more than funny! With genuine humility, honesty, and passion Gordon often weaves life lessons into his programs of the things he's learned in the ordinary and often painful events in his life that include some tragic deaths, his wife's victorious battle with cancer, and his dads many years confined to a wheelchair.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

I first met Jim when I performed on the Henry Cho Show on Great American Country (GAC Cable TV). He was a co-writer and producer and I could tell a smart guy. I caught him again a few years later performing on the showcase for the Christian Comedy Association in Los Angeles. And then one morning I was watching the Disney Channel with my kids and his name popped up as the co-executive producer for "Dog with a Blog." I reached out to Jim in the early phase of the COVID-19 crisis because I figured it might be the only time I could reign in the busy man. And we all benefit from the conversation. Jim gives us a lot to think about. I'm at the Christian Comedy Association convention today, Pkarlgh! Gonna be A LOT of weird interviews next week (maybe for the rest of my life). So stay tuned.   THIS EPISODE:   I'm setting up the Springapalooza show with Peter Heck because we're small potatoes and we can't afford a road crew. You can listen in while I helpfully carry around my recorder and Peter does stuff. There's a strict dress code and I enforce it with one of the other performers.  I dial a telephone. We are trapped inside the theater. We died of starvation. That's not true. Instead, we disconnect America from the internet and I play one of the greatest songs of all time for Peter and he doesn't appreciate it because he's a grouch.   Then the podcast moves to Pizza Hut where we discuss Luke's most recent show while pasta flows like water.  Luke makes a suggestion for how Andrew should make a living after graduation. He's probably going to be living in my basement for a century. I quiz Lori to see if she remembers what I told her about pizza being proof that God exists. (She doesn't.) The Peaches offers a philosophy about plants and gluttony. Andrew weaves a few tales about his lawn mowing experiences (lots of bees). Lori and I kinda of argue about desire to learn. Emmi makes a lot of noise in her high chair... The kids are amazed that I don't want to learn how to build a trebuchet. We end with a sad story about a ruined strawberry dessert.   Peaches and I finish last week's discussion about the pregnant girl who wasn't allowed to walk across the stage at her graduation ceremony.  We make excuses for ourselves making excuses. The idea that 'it could happen to anybody' is wrong. Some stuff won't ever happen if you don't want it to.  And even in a hurricane, shoplifting is wrong. I tell Peaches what she taught me when she was a tiny baby.

So I challenged us both to try new material. At first, I thought we would just hold each other accountable to do the bits. Then, I upped the ante and told him we would record the show and play back the bits on the podcast. The new bit comedy challenge was on! Today we break down the audience response to his political humor. Would they go along with it? Could he stay interested in a topic he hates? On my end, I work through taking a family vacation. Initially, how we raised money for the trip. And then I joke about surviving the HooRoo Run at AQUATICA SEAWORLD. How Did It Go??? Both sets had some hiccups (mine more than his I thought). Yet, the crowd gave us the info we needed to tweak and continue to develop the material from here. Let me know if you like this episode. Last week you met John Branyan. He is the comic with an affinity for Shakespeare and the Three Little Pigs. After I hung up, I thought about a comedy challenge. John and I were both headed to the same conference that weekend (Christian Comedy Association). We were both slated to perform at the same showcase. This was a perfect chance to force myself to get some new material out of the notebook an onto the stage. So I called back and issued the challenge. At first, I thought we would just hold each other accountable to do the bits. Then, I upped the ante and told him we would record the show and play back the bits on a future podcast. The new bit comedy challenge was on! Today John offers up a decent size chunk of political humor. He has a method for writing jokes about ANYTHING. And since he hates political humor, he forced himself to use this system to write 5-6 jokes about the current presidential candidates. On my end, I suggest a few jokes about planning a family vacation. Initially, a few observations about getting the funds together for the trip. Then the hotel stay. And eventually the trip to Sea World Orlando. We are both happy with the potential of the bits. Since it is untested territory, we won't know until next week how it all shakes out!
