This episode is brought to you by Patreon sponsor Kevin Hardy! Today I am joined by former students (and now full time comedians) Jonnie W. and Brian Bates. We frequently hangout and run jokes and ideas past each others. I thought we should record this and let you in on the process. It's not rocket science. But, it is insightful to see how different people find humor in different areas of a premise. The premise is the absolute most important part of your joke. It is the horse that the laughs rode in on. It is the structure that the bit is built upon. It's the tree limb that helps bear the fruit of funny. After we clarify our premises we walk through ideas for punch lines, tags and other sub-premises that the idea can lead to. It is a fun time. WOULD YOU LIKE TO BE ON THE PODCAST? I am looking for a few listeners who have new premises they would like to brainstorm. If you have the ability to RECORD your set, I would love to have you on the show! We will brainstorm over a Google Hangout, then you will need to bring back an audio clip within two weeks to include in the show. Next week we will follow up with results from this session. We each will bring in a recording of the joke in front of a live audience. After we listen we will trouble shoot any dead spots and see if we can add some more to each joke. We welcome your input and ideas as well. Feel free to send any ideas for these jokes to SchoolOfLaughs@gmail.com and I'll pass it along to the fellas. Today's episode is brought to you by Patreon supporter Susan Sussman.  Leaving a job as lawyer for State Farm Insurance would be unthinkable. For most people anyway. Fortunately for us, Rex Havens side-hustled as a comedian on weekends and nights for seven years until he was ready to make the jump. He started comedy late in life (mid-thirties). That jump was over two decades ago and he is still going strong. I first met Rex when we worked at “Coo's Coo's Lounge” at a Bowling Alley in Cartersville, IL. Yes, we had arrived! Wow, looking back neither of us should have been there. The show was good and I learned that you could really work clean in ANY environment. Today I catch up with Rex to see what he is up to, what he has learned, and where he is headed in his comedy career. Specifically, we talk about: The value in working a little extra hard on your act Graduating with a law degree and an M.B.A. His years as a college professor The State Farm years (12 of them) Hanging around the corporate job long enough to get his kids in college Making marriage last while traveling “Birthing” a new CD Developing a one man theatre show 3 things that happen when you laugh To learn more about Rex Havens just visit www.RexHavens.com or www.LearnedFromMyWife.com. This week's episode features answers to recently submitted listener email questions. And this episode is brought to you by Patreon sponsor Brent Allen. Among the listener email questions we tackle are: HOW CAN I BEST MANAGE AN EMAIL LIST? I hate to bother ya. But do you remember what episode you talked about email lists? I'm starting to get enough names on my email list where I should really switch over to a better way of keeping track. WHAT IS A GOOD FLOW FOR A FUNDRAISER FEATURING COMEDY? I am helping a mental health nonprofit agency plan a comedy fundraiser.  Any suggestions on how to format the evening?  The Executive Director was thinking anywhere from 1.5 to 2 hours.  Maybe have some improv and a stand-up headliner.  We are just getting started with this, but we might look at holding the event at the comedy club in town. SHOULD YOU DO CONTESTS WHEN YOU ARE JUST STARTING OUT? I am a new comic, only been performing for 4 months, I started by taking a stand-up comedy class and listening to your podcast. At the end of the class I came out with about 10 minutes of alright material. I have been writing and hitting open mike's when I can. I have now tightened up the material so I feel I have a solid 6 minutes. I have entered two comedy competitions in the last month to try and get some extra stage time. Both competitions I did not come out on top but I did walk away with some great lessons and tips from the other comedians. I wanna know though, am I trying to run before I can walk? I am doing these competitions for stage time, but if I were to actually do well and move onto a round 2, I wouldn't have enough material to perform a different set of equally solid material. I wanna get your opinion on whether I should keep open miking for a few more months until I have more solid material, or is entering competitions and shows at this point going to hurt my rep when/if people find out I don't have much material yet? HOW CAN I GET OVER MY FEAR OF HECKLERS AND BOMBING? I ran across your YouTube video about "Am I to old to do comedy?" I want to do comedy bad. I've had this dream for over 20years but honestly didn't have the guts. My number one fall back is being heckled and failing. I'm turning 42 this year and figured I have nothing to lose. I was wondering if you could give me advice on these 2 fears. WHAT IS CLUB 52? I hear you mention CLUB 52 on the podcast on occasion but I can't find it listen on your SchoolOfLaughs.com web site. Last week you met John Branyan. He is the comic with an affinity for Shakespeare and the Three Little Pigs. After I hung up, I thought about a comedy challenge. John and I were both headed to the same conference that weekend (Christian Comedy Association). We were both slated to perform at the same showcase. This was a perfect chance to force myself to get some new material out of the notebook an onto the stage. So I called back and issued the challenge. At first, I thought we would just hold each other accountable to do the bits. Then, I upped the ante and told him we would record the show and play back the bits on a future podcast. The new bit comedy challenge was on! Today John offers up a decent size chunk of political humor. He has a method for writing jokes about ANYTHING. And since he hates political humor, he forced himself to use this system to write 5-6 jokes about the current presidential candidates. On my end, I suggest a few jokes about planning a family vacation. Initially, a few observations about getting the funds together for the trip. Then the hotel stay. And eventually the trip to Sea World Orlando. We are both happy with the potential of the bits. Since it is untested territory, we won't know until next week how it all shakes out! Let me know if you like this episode. If so, the new bit comedy challenge may become a regular feature. From writing and performing to horrible road gigs - we cover a lot of ground! Questions include: Is there a line that you cannot cross in comedy? What was my worst heckling situation? When writing jokes with other comics, how do you decide who gets to keep the joke? What is the worst experience I've had on the road? Is it hard to do all the traveling and still maintain a solid family life? After 25 years working in comedy, who are some of my favorite comics to work with? And why? What can I do if there are no comedy clubs or open mics near me? I talk openly about a few "I'm over this" moments where I could have lost a club booking for standing up for myself. (Would you ask for a new hotel if you looked out your window and saw two guys with guns sitting on the hood of your car?) We also cover the time an entire arena was ready for comedy and ... they weren't getting it. This episode is brought to you by Patreon sponsors: BRIAN BATES & RHONDA COREY As you move along the path of becoming a professional comedian will encounter many crossroads. Places where decisions must be made. Points where you have to make a careful choice on how to proceed. These tough decisions comics have to make can go either way. Hopefully, they go in a way where you can sleep good at night. Ideally in a way that benefits your career longevity. In this episode, I cover about a half dozen of these pivotal moments. Specifically, moments when you realize ... A club “double booked” you and you lost the gig You have a better offer for a night you are already booked You seem to have gone as far as you can in the clubs You are gone more than you want, but still like to work You aren't getting the money you think you deserve The road has flat out destroyed your health You've been at it so long you don't have any other skills In each case, I discuss what steps I took to stay the course. Some of the decisions were quick and painless. Others, I really had to spend some time to figure out. Through trial and error I found ways to navigate the obstacle and continue to be funny and live the dream. And I realize these are just a few of the potentially tough decisions you might need to make. Please let me know some others that were not part of this episode. We all have a different journey and some are trickier than others. I would love to hear your "tough decisions". Shoot me an email at SchoolOfLaughs@gmail.com. We did it. You did it. I did it. It was done. What is IT? 100 episodes! Woo hoo! This episode of the School Of Laughs podcast is brought to you by Chelle Baxter, Peter Margaritas, Sandi Joy Chadwick and John Charlton - thanks! It is crazy to think that a couple of years ago we started this journey together. When we did, I had no idea that we would make it to 100 episodes of the School Of Laughs podcast. I hoped to. Just didn't know if it was going to be something I could pull off. What a ride! With help from Gavin Miller, the ball got rolling and rolling and ... I've learned a lot! Hopefully you have as well. We've listened to jokes go from the brainstorming phase to the stage. We've talked with Letterman comics like Jeff Caldwell, Keith Alberstadt and Andy Hendrickson. We heard from Tonight Show regular Nate Bargatze and his dad Stephen. Comedy Central comedians Robert Mac, Luis Ramey and Pat McGann also shared insights. Seasoned veterans Jeff Jena, Jeff Allen and Dan Swartout also shared many golden nuggets of information about becoming a comedian. We also heard from folks who write for TV like Martha Bolton and Scott Dunn. We learned booking tips from Tim Grable and Midwest Clean Comedy. We know now what it takes to record a CD, and a DVD as well as how to put on your own shows. Former students (Monty Mitchell, Jonnie W., Brian Bates, Chris Cherry, Mike James, and Paulina Combow) stopped by to share their successes. WOW. So where do we go from here? The plan is to continue for the next three months and see if there is enough interest and support through PATREON (see below) to continue. If so, we will lock in for another full year. If not, we will ride on into the sunset and sleep well knowing we gave it our all. On today's episode, I reflect back on the past year and what lies ahead. Specifically, I talk about: The Broken record Comedy Show with Chad Riden Listener feedback emails from YOU the listener What it takes to put together a podcast My favorite episodes from the first 100 We check in with Gavin Miller And a lot more. Thank you so much for listening and I hope to continue to provide you with beneficial information and tactical strategies for becoming BIGGER, BETTER and MORE BOOKABLE! Support the podcast through PATREON A listener recently told me about Patreon and I totally love this concept. In a nutshell, in exchange for a small RECURRING monthly donation of your choice, you gain access to many extra opportunities to interact with the show. My favorite bonus is our very own, private “School Of Laughs Patreon News Feed”. Think of it as a Facebook page without all the drama. In this feed I will post exclusive articles, bonus podcasts and more. And of course, you will be invited to share ideas and support other listeners of the show! The funds would help offset the costs associated with time incurred producing the show, and at the same time give you more of what I believe you find valuable. It's up to you as far as the amount. We average 4 episodes a month and are hoping you feel like the information is worth at least $1.25 a show. So, a monthly pledge of $5 is our hope. More is great, less is still helpful. If we reach the target of 200 patrons (which is just a fraction of the overall listener downloads per episode), I think we would be on track to continue the production of the show and creating opportunities for you to grow as a performer and see definite returns on your support. In short, I want to continue to provide the podcast and reach out to bigger names, more helpful comics and incredible resources. Jeffrey Jena started comedy in ... 1978! Were you even born? Ha. I was just 10 years old eating fruit loops in my jammies when Jeffrey Jena first hit the stage. Thirteen years later I worked with him for the first time.  And now, some 18 years later, we catch up. Jeffrey is still performing at a high level. Today he reflects back on his run and some the things he's learned. In the hey-day of comedy he appeared on over 40, yes 40 - tv shows. So there are many lessons indeed. We talk about: When you have to put your foot down with bookers A story about staying in a garage with Daniel Tosh How he approaches teaching comedy Why desire and drive trump talent nearly every time How Steve Prefontaine and great comedians are alike A quote by George Burns that you will flat out love Frustration with other comedians having similar bits Why his 5 year stint as a house emcee was a great experience even 20 years in to the business How he takes time off to enjoy being a father The dangers of alcohol and drugs How golf and comedy is alike His biggest pet peeve in comedy Intros and Bios and how people get them mixed up Performing at a "going away party" for a terminally ill person - by mistake And the importance of leaving early enough when headed to a gig And much, much more! Jeff provides a number of tips and you owe it to yourself to listen in to almost 40 years of comedy experience. At a time when a lot of guys his age are winding down their careers Jeff's is finding its second wind. Over the last ten years he has established himself as one of the top corporate and cruise entertainers in the country. "My audience," Jeff says, "has moved from smokey clubs to sleek cruise ships and private events, I just followed them." They have responded! At recent events he has received high praise and standing ovations for his blend of one liners, storytelling and touching personal tales. His act is focused on family and coming to fatherhood later in life. Stephen Bargatze joins us today. If that name sounds familiar it may be because you saw him in Las Vegas, caught him at Opryland, perhaps he visited your school or maybe because he is the father of Nate Bargatze. Regardless of whether you knew him before or not, you will love his generous and insightful interview. Stephen ran away from home in his teens, escaping an alcoholic father and other family issues. After being bit by a dog he was left with a bit of a lisp that also forced him into a bit of shyness. A few chance encounters reshaped his entire life and he headed off in a much better direction. With encouragement from a clown - yes, a clown, Stephen began to learn magic and perform shows. Later on he left the makeup behind and let his comedy and magic stand on its own. Today he shares with us his story and some great insights into the world of magic. We cover many things, including... How Ronald McDonald changed his life How being singled out by a drama teacher played a role in becoming accepted Why it took a year to talk to his girlfriend Why he wanted to get fired from his Opryland gig How he used a log flume to make  huge splash in his magic show What he learned from Robin Williams about performing How magicians buy and share tricks Having other magicians call you to ask if they can do your trick on TV How utilizing jokes help magicians engage the crowd during the process of magic Why “playing dumb” can help endear an audience to you Why having a DVD called “I hate kids” kind of backfired His friendship with two other magicians who all grew up in the same area in Louisville How he is able to use magic to engage and influence school kids to make better decisions How him and his wife compete to get a joke in Nate's routine And a lot more. Really, a lot more! You've got to listen to Stephen Bargatze describe some of his tricks and hear for yourself. You'll quickly learn why he has been able to spend decades doing what he really loves. Tim Grable of "The Grable Group" generously allows me to pick his brain in this episode. I want to know how comedians and speakers can make it EASY for booking agents to hire them. Tim's background as a talent booker stretches back to his days at Taylor University, where he turned around their live events in a big way within just a year. He was hired quickly after college to book speakers for events. Shortly thereafter he founded The Nashville Speakers Bureau, became President of Nashville Agency, and ultimately started The Grable Group. Tim utilizes a comprehensive background in business and entertainment sectors to locate and develop endorsements, licensing, and film and TV resources. Tim exclusively represents a handful of clients, including comedians Taylor Mason, Bob Stromberg, Jeff Allen, Daren Streblow, Thor Ramsey, and rePercussion - a Drumming Comedy Show. In this episode I asked him specifically about: Making the transition from booking bands to speakers and comedians Ways to get on an agent's "radar" What are things performers do that make it hard to book them? Recording a studio CD for a musical comedian takes a lot of work. Transferring the energy of a live performance into a recorded track is just part of the battle. In this episode I interview Nashville Music Producer Nathan Meckel. Nathan is a bit of Renaissance man when it comes to recording. He can arrange, produce, record, edit, mix, master, sing and play guitar, bass, keyboards and an occasional harmonica. He also has a better ear than the bionic woman. When I first moved to Nashville in 1999, I met Nathan and we wrote some tunes together. A short while after that he produced “Fishin' With Dynamite” a CD that helped put me on the map. Now, a decade later, he helps again with my latest 15 track musical CD “Half Fool”. I wanted you to meet Nathan and get a feel for how recording a CD with a producer can be. In this episode we talk about: How to go about finding a producer in your town General guidelines for costs and contracts Is it fun for a record producer to explore the comedy world? How a producer helps overcome a performer's shortcomings How a performer needs to trust a producer Inviting feedback and input during the project The difference between a producer and a mixer A “little less notch and a lot more groove” And much, much more! Stick around until the end of the episode and get an exclusive listen to two tracks form the NEW CD “32k Ft Up In the Air” and “Awkward”. Comedy Central's first ever LIVE stand-up comedy broadcast was a huge success. WHY? Because they turned the keys over to master comedian Brian Regan and he took us on a fun drive. Some of us he left off at "the next exit", but for those who stayed on board it was awesome. As any comedian knows, performing is like walking a high wire. One little slip and the whole show can go careening off track. Add to that a packed house, television cameras, and no edits ... and you've got a circus act even P. T. Barnum himself would pay to see. Brian Regan was definitely the man for the job. TV clean? Check. Energetic and enjoyable? Check. Skilled and able? Check. Funny? Double check, underline and circle. No doubt about it. With over 30 years of stage experience, the youngest 57 year old in the world gave new comics a clinic on how to put on a show. Specifically, he demonstrated: Excellent material choices Well crafted routines Steady pacing Precision timing Vocal variety Surprising twists Engaging facial expressions Deliberate set structure and ... need I mention sticking to his time? CROWD WORK Watching a masterful comedian navigate crowd work is a beautiful thing. Like a hunter, they are one step ahead of their prey. Leading them here, baiting them there. The stand-up comedian is artfully creating a theatre in which the audience is keenly aware of the risks. When done competently, crowd work is a beautiful thing. Conversely, watching someone flounder around trying to get the audience to participate in crowd work is nearly unbearable. When should a new comic start working towards incorporating crowd work into their shows? It depends. Some comics will tell you to wait until you have a solid act before you start working the crowd. I agree that you should always focus on creating great material. But it is unrealistic to think that you should have to wait several years before you begin working the crowd. I suggest finding opportunities to dip your toes in the water and test your skills. In this episode we cover the ins and outs of crowd work. Specifically, we talk about: How to select the best audience members Who to engage (and who not to) The importance of LISTENING in crowd work Where you should work the crowd first A “perfect spot” for crowd work for headliners One non-verbal technique to keep in mind How to create a space for “playing” in your show How to minimize failure with YES or NO questions The fun (and risk) of open-ended questions After listening, we welcome any tips you may have on getting the most out of crowd work. Send them on to us SchoolOfLaughs@gmail.com. This episode also contains our first “FIX-A-JOKE” segment. Lee Hardin provides us with a joke he wanted punched up.   Andrew Tarvin LOVES Improvisational Comedy. He started the 8th Floor Improv Group while attending THE Ohio State University in 2004. That group started in Stradley Hall is still together 11 years later. The names and faces may change, but the shows go on. After college, he took a calculated risk and worked as an engineer for Proctor and Gamble (who coincidentally managed to contain comedian Greg Warren for a few years before he broke free). Although that job was a great experience, he couldn't put his love for comedy on the back burner forever. Flash forward to New York City where Andrew now calls home. His focus now has shifted to Humor That Works. He has done the research and dug up the data to show businesses the value of humor. He communicates to companies the return on investment levity in the workplace can provide. He's given a Tedx Talk, Performed in Norway, and written a book. Listen in as he describes how he did all of this while looking like a 15-year old boy and sounding like a 13-year old girl. We discuss: How he started the Improv Group Why he thinks Improv is easier than Satnd-up How he helps organizations use Humor to increase the bottom line How he prepared for his Tedx Talk What high school kids are doing now that we both wish we did A tip for new Improv players to get more in the moment A tip for creating comedy And much more. Last Comic Standing, the premier stand-up showcase contest, is back! The comics are as strong as ever. Now in it's 9th season, the show had finally found it's rhythm. No longer confined by the restaints of "living in a house" based reality tv, the show delivers more stand-up in prime time than ever before. This season the Judges are Roseanne Barr, Keenen Ivory Wayans, and first timer Norm Macdonald. Host Anthony Jeselnik adds a good 15 laughs per episode. He's a welcome relief from the screaming emcees in the past. True to it's past, the show brings forth a variety of extremely seasoned vets mixed with relative newcomers. All comics so far have done a decent job of getting luaghs. The line up is diverse and the feedback insightful. Specifically, we talk about: Norm Macdonald's ability to listen, analyze and offer tag lines simultaneously What each judge seems to be looking for The best joke you can start out with (not what you think) Being strong enough of a writer to follow your performance style How Roseanne has really shown she is a fan of great comedy How one comic got a second chance and made the best use of it and much, much more. Are you on track? If not, what changes are you making to get them back in line? I set a few different comedy goals at the onset of the year. Both personally for my own comedy career as well as some for the School Of Laughs. I am a little off on a couple of smaller goals (Youtube channel for School of Laughs), but coming along nicely on some of the bigger ones (2 new CD projects). In this episode, we go over Gavin's comedy goals, too. One of which, is to drop his day job as a personal assistant so he can focus more on getting started in comedy. He is well on track to make the transition. Grab your goals (if you set them) and give them a look as you listen to this episode. Going to your first comedy open mic? Welcome to the jungle, baby! In this episode we offer up 11 song titles that perfectly describe a comedy open mic night. Don't get me wrong, they aren't all bad. But man, you do see a common thread unravelling if you attend a dozen or so. An open mic, by default, becomes a place to try out new material. Rarely is anyone getting paid. So comics might also use this night to practice crowd work, or even help them memorize their material better. I like to think of an open mic as a place somewhere between a laboratory and a gym. Maybe it's even more like a test kitchen. It's a place where experimentation can be both rewarding and frustrating. Whatever the case, you'll need to spend some time hitting the open mic scene before trying to get work at a comedy club. Many song titles came to mind while preparing for this episode. Some that didn't make the cut include “You dropped a bomb on me”, “Tracks of my Tears”, “Help”, and “Twilight Zone”. What song titles come to mind for you? Send them to us, schooloflaughs@gmail.com and we will add a list to he show notes and mention them in a future podcast. In this episode we talk about, What to expect at your first open mic How to work with a difficult situation When to “cut bait” and move on Why you shouldn't dress like a comic The importance of sticking to your time How to remove some of the pressure to be great When it might be time to quit comedy and much, much more! Without giving it away, here are some of the groups that made the cut: Pink Floyd, B. B. King, Led Zeppelin, The Rolling Stones, The Carpenters, The Clash, The Animals, Guns and Roses, Lynard Skynard, Gloria Gaynor, and Nirvana. It's been said the number one fear is public speaking. If that's true, then speaking and being expected to be funny must take that notion and multiply it by 1000x.  For some it's simply a fear of looking stupid or saying something dumb. Hey, guess what – that's comedy! For others, though, it's an actual fear of having a panic attack in front of people.  Whether you are worried about looking like a fool or truly going into anxiety, these tips should help you immediately! Successful comedians learn to either overcome this fear or to manage it. We break the discussion into three parts, 1.     The week(s) before the show 2.     The day of the show 3.     The moments on stage Specifically, we talk about: Two simple techniques for removing all the pressure from the performance What to do if you “go blank” A tip from Ricky Gervais Physical preparation A tool for envisioning success How to make the show seem smaller and less threatening An approach to give you some “breathing room” onstage How to gain confidence before you hit the stage What the crowd can't do (that you can) The value of a pre-show “ritual” “Ironing” out the kinks What to expect during the show How to be objective When to “go with the flow” Three “S” words that I utilize before every show How to actually ENJOY  the show And much, much more!  What are some techniques that you use to relax and overcome stage fright? Nothing is more serious in standup comedy than a showcase night. Whether your showcase set is at a festival, for TV or simply to get booked by a club – you've got to be prepared. Putting together your set can drive you crazy. This podcast is all about picking the right material for the showcase set. Eliminate all the second-guessing with a little time invested now! In this episode we speak specifically about: Determining the goal for the night Selecting the best material for the showcase Nearly eliminating all segues How to open the set What to NOT do in your opening joke What type of jokes won't work in a short set Which joke to close you should close out with Whether or not you need to hit all of your tags One thing you must do no matter what A simple (yet often forgot) piece to fool proofing your set What to do once you've assembled your set How much you should practice before the big night And much, much, more! In fact, I am using every one of these strategies to get ready for a showcase in front of about 1300 people this very week. How will it turn out? We will definitely follow up in another episode.   ALSO A FEW IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENTS You can contact us anytime in regards to these announcements at mailto:SchoolOfLaughs@gmail.com Guest Blog Posts If you are blogging about your comedy journey or have written articles about your experience we'd love to share them.
