With 45% of households not being able to cover a $400 emergency and 30% of households having no savings, it’s no surprise that financial wellness continues to be a hot topic as we move into 2019. Since this is still relatively new territory for wellness professionals, I brought on today’s guest, Shane Robson-Smith, to help us navigate this area of wellbeing. Shane and his wife had big ideas about the abundant life they wanted to lead but found themselves buried under a new mortgage payment, $20,000 in consumer debt and over $100,000 in student loans leaving them broke and living paycheck-to-paycheck. Together, they used the vision they had for their married life to start living below their means, stuck to a budget, paid off their debt, and started saving and investing for future goals. Today, Shane enjoys an active lifestyle, building his dream business, traveling internationally with his wife and three kids and is on course to retire more than 10 years earlier than most working folks these days. In this interview, Shane tells his story of getting out of debt, financial stressors he often sees, the personal and professional impact of financial stress, and some common mistakes employers make when addressing financial wellness. Shane jam packs some helpful stats in this interview and leaves us with some really good tangible tips. This episode is part of my Start Smart Series. A listener asked me to talk about the simplest and least expensive way to get a coaching business off the ground. Great question!I love it when listeners tell me what they want to hear on the show. If you have a specific request, go to my contact page on —ProsperousCoachBlog.com — and get in touch. High Profit, Low Tech and High TouchThe answer to the easiest coaching business model is ultra simple! It's 1:1.If you're charging enough and enroll your clients into a longer term package, you won't need many clients each year to make a good income. I only work with 20 - 30 clients each year.Your marketing could be minimal if you have ready access to your chosen target audience. And because expenses are incredibly low for this business model, 1:1 is the most profitable option.Think about it ... You don't have to have a website (although you may want to.) You won't need a team or even a Virtual Assistant to help you with all the tasks because admin is minimal. You don't need big coordinated marketing campaigns, a strong presence on social media or a bunch of apps with monthly fees.Literally all you need is a phone and a private place in your home to take client calls. And maybe an inexpensive business card for networking. You know what I'm describing, don't you? It's the way every service entrepreneur did business before the internet. Don't roll your eyes. It's still the way a lot of service entrepreneurs operate.Sometimes I wonder if it isn't easier than all the online stuff everyone, including me, does now. But an online business model does allow you to have an international audience, and I love that. For that analog way of business, you have to be an active networker, go where your clients are, be a good conversationalist and a non-salesy enroller. When I started, I only offered private coaching. I found all of my clients through networking and speaking. It was only in my second year that I added in face to face group coaching. Then started doing VIP days - that's 3 to 8 hours of working with one person in one day.It was only in year 6 that I shifted to online. I created a Membership Program. Honestly, a huge amount of work for poor returns. Then, I added a high ticket online Mastermind with two yearly retreats. And I sold two self-study online training programs. For one of them, I took a group of 20 - 50 through it quarterly as well with a closed Facebook group. It was fun doing all of that stuff and I made good money. But it was soooo much work keeping it all rolling. And so much of my income was going to expenses! That's often overlooked when coaches choose a business model. The more complicated or technical you go, the harder you work, and sometimes the less money you keep. There really is no passive revenue except royalties. I was lucky to have the opportunity to co-write Coach Training curriculum for a royalty and that curriculum is still being used.Market Less, Serve Clients LongerBut you know what I like the most? Getting to know my clients well and doing deeper work. The 30 hour work week with a 4 day weekend isn't bad either! That's my lifestyle choice. So in my 20th year in business, I'm back to working privately with client in a 5 month comprehensive coaching business building program. I also offer a 90-minute strategy session. So how do you find and enroll 1:1 clients? That's a question for another episode. But I remember hearing what I thought was an urban legend, when I was in coach training ...Sandy Vilas, the then CEO of Coach Inc, supposedly worked with 80 clients each week, all of whom he enrolled simply by calling colleagues and inviting them

Our GuestStephanie Tilenius is the Founder and CEO of Vida Health, a next-generation digital therapeutic and health coaching platform for chronic physical and mental health conditions deployed at Fortune 500 companies, large national payers and providers. Prior to starting Vida, Tilenius was with Kleiner Perkins Canfield & Byers, where she worked primarily with late-stage KPCB portfolio companies, with an emphasis on companies in the Digital Growth Fund. While at Kleiner, Stephanie invested in Nextdoor and MyFitnessPal. Prior to Kleiner, Stephanie was at Google, where she was vice president of global commerce and payments, helping build and launch new products and platforms including Google Wallet, Google Shopping and Google Express. Prior to joining Google, she was at eBay and PayPal for nine years, and in her last role was SVP of eBay.com and global product where she helped lead the eBay Marketplace turnaround. Prior to eBay, Stephanie was VP of Merchant Services at PayPal where she built the off-eBay PayPal business from the ground up into a multi-billion business. A co-founder of PlanetRx.com, she has also worked at Intel, AOL and Firefly. Stephanie sits on the public boards of Coach Inc. and Seagate Technology. Here are the highlights of our conversation with our guest:Stephanie is passionate in making an impact in other people’s lives and doing the things that matter. Everything that she had done in her career had affected millions of people and improved lives and now in Vida, she is focusing on health care and eradicating chronic conditions, which is a real problem in the country. She had worked with eBay, Google and PayPal and her experience in building products and platforms from the ground up and reimagining how things are done during her time with these companies had helped her in her current work in healthcare, which, in some ways, is one of the last industries to adopt consumer-facing technology. Vida is an app service for managing your health. They match you to a coach, a nurse or a health expert, and a digital therapy program, to work in the area that you are most concerned in. They cover both mental and physical conditions and programs focus on concerns such as diabetes, hypertension, weight loss, and smoking. They use machine learning to personalize your programs to help you succeed.Stephanie shares an example of a mobile experience of one of their customers, Jenny, which led to great results. Jenny is a 49-year old, mom of three who lost 80 lbs. in 8 months. She had diabetes, cholesterol and hypertension and found profound benefits from Vida. The new movement today is that health care is being self-care. People are now trying to track their behavior in a more holistic way than they have done in the past and this is very beneficial compared to the traditional way wherein you only get one reading per year during an annual physical exam. Vida is connected to the most popular wearables and anything out there which will enable you to monitor your health. They connect to other apps as well so they can integrate your data into one place for your coach to see. The benefit of this is for your coach to personalize your experience and help you achieve your goals by knowing everything you are doing. This day-to-day insight helps people make the right behavior change and make decisions.Pure execution and scale, just like other companies, are one of Vida’s challenges. Things get more complicated as they scale so they continue to get customer feedback – from onboarding, retention, engagement with their coaches and programs, the use of different features inside the app – and just continue to iterate. They note that they should be mindful of population profiles and their use of the app.Building a two-sided market place is always complicated and one things that has been tough for Vida is balancing the supply and demand. In addition to this, they have to have tools for both their users and coaches so this is twice the work versus other apps.
