Artesano Del Tobacco came into the 2025 Premium Cigar Association (PCA) Trade Show with some newer offerings. The company works closely with AJ Fernandez Cigars to handle its production. While the recent fire affected many of AJ's clients, Artesano Del Tobacco was able to introduce its new products into the market. This year, the big news for Artesano Del Tobacco is the company's first Connecticut Shade offering, which falls under the Viva La Vida line. This follows up on a recent lancero line extension for El Pulpo. Both new offerings, the company says, are the direct result of consumer engagement. Full PCA Report: https://wp.me/p6h1n1-wtS

The #4 2023 Cigar of the Year is the Black Label Trading Co Deliverance Porcelain Robusto. Black Label Trading Company and its sister brand Black Works Studio are two brands created by James Brown of Oveja Negra Cigars. James Brown has been known for his dark and full-bodied maduro offerings. In 2018 that would change as Brown would introduce a pair of Connecticut Shade offerings: Black Works Studio Killer Bee Connecticut and Black Label Trading Co Deliverance Porcelain. Both cigars would be hits and would both make their way into becoming regular production offerings: Porcelain would join the regular production lineup of Black Label Trading Co in 2019, and Killer Bee Connecticut would become regular production in 2022. Porcelain was originally released in a Corona Gorda size, but a Robusto was added in 2021 and it's the cigar that lands at #4. Full Details: https://wp.me/p6h1n1-rhs

For the third consecutive year, Matilde Cigars was a part of the Sutliff Tobacco pavilion. During this time, Sutliff has provided distribution services for many companies, including Matilde. It had been almost 6 1/2 years since Matilde Cigars has released a new regular production line, but earlier this year, Matilde released the Matilde Serena Maduro. The Matilde Serena Maduro is the fifth regular production line for Matilde, and it's meant to complement the Matilde Serena, which is a Connecticut Shade offering. Meanwhile, Matilde is continuing its Limited Exposure project - a series of limited-production cigars from Tabacalera La Isla that feature small production runs in different sizes. This year the Matilde Limited Exposure No. 1 was released in a Robusto size. In what has become a Cigar Coop Coalition tradition, the Matilde booth was visited as the Trade Show was getting ready to shut down for 2023. Full PCA Report: https://wp.me/p6h1n1-qky

This week on Flavor Odyssey, we continue our journey into emerging cigar styles. On this episode, your hosts Robby Ras and Randy Griggs explore Connecticut Shade-wrapped cigars combined with maduro binders. While this style certainly isn't new, it's gained a great deal of momentum with releases such as the Dunbarton Sobremesa Brûlée, Tatuaje Negociant, and our own Diet Sarsaparilla. The sweetness of the maduro binder might compliment the buttery/bitter notes of the CT wrapper, but what drink will round out the pairing? Tune in and find out. Pairings Randy: Sobremesa Brûlée & Coffee Old Fashioned

The 2022 Premium Cigar Association (PCA) Trade Show marked the second one for Howard G Cigars. Last year, the company launched and came out with several lines. The company is owned by Howard Gumbs Jr. and already has several brands in the portfolio including Magic Stick, Black Moses, and the All Pro Series. The All Pro Series has Gumbs partnering with two of his friends, Ike Taylor and Leon Searcy who have had stellar NFL careers. This year each of the brands in the portfolio saw something new come to the Trade Show. If there was a theme with this year's offerings by Howard G, it would be adding Connecticut Shade offerings to several of the brands. This year, we found Howard G Cigars to be one of the revelations of the show. The company brings an excellent portfolio of cigars, and some wonderful people behind the brand. Coming in at #2 is the ADVentura The Royal Return – Queen's Pearls Corona. ADVentura Cigars, the flagship brand of ADV & McKay Cigars Co, is a joint venture owned by Henderson Ventura and Marcel Knobel. Henderson Ventura is best known for running the Tabacalera William Ventura factory. A few years ago, he teamed with Knobel to launch ADVentura Cigars. The brand's theme is The Age of Exploration. In 2020, they released a two-blend series under the name The Royal Return. One was a Connecticut Broadleaf known as King's Gold and one was a Connecticut Shade offering called Queen's Pearls. Both were highly rated blends on Cigar Coop, but it was the Queen's Pearls Corona that really shone. The Royal Return – Queen's Pearls Corona is an Ecuadorian forward blend. It not only features an Ecuadorian Connecticut wrapper, it also has an Ecuadorian binder and Ecuadorian tobaccos in the filler. The filler also incorporates Dominican and Nicaraguan tobaccos. According to ADVentura Cigars, the tobaccos used have five years of age, and the rolled cigars have been aging for four months. ADVentura says the tobaccos go through a special fermentation process to give them a lighter profile. The Corona is a 44 x 6 size and production comes from Tabacalera William Ventura in the Dominican Republic. The Queen's Pearl Corona delivered notes of vanilla, cream, citrus, toast, natural tobacco, cedar, and black pepper. This cigar definitely has a light profile. The cigar started out mild to medium in body before going to medium in the second half. At the same time, strength-wise the Queens Pearl Corona held mild to medium from start to finish. In the end, this is a wonderful classic old-school Connecticut and was easily the top Connecticut Shade cigar assessed on Cigar Coop over the past year. The Queens Pearl Corona lands ADVentura Cigars on the Countdown for the first time in a big way. It's also the third cigar from the Dominican Republic to land on the 2021 Countdown. For details of the 2021 Cigar of the Year Countdown, see our 2021 criteria: https://cigar-coop.com/2021/12/announcement-criteria-for-the-2021-cigar-of-the-year-countdown.html Cigar Coop Report: https://wp.me/p6h1n1-lPa

Coming in at #13 is the Sobremesa Brûlée Blue by Dunbarton Tobacco & Trust. Throughout his career, Dunbarton Tobacco & Trust owner Steve Saka has loved to take an existing blend and do some tweaks on it. In the case of the Sobremesa Brûlée Blue, it is a modification of the Sobremesa Brûlée, Dunbarton Tobacco & Trust's Connecticut Shade offering. In addition to a top-grade Connecticut Shade wrapper, Sobremesa Brûlée Blue consists of a San Andres Mexican binder, and all-Nicaraguan fillers. The Blue comes in one size - a Corona Larga that measures 6 1/4 x 46. Production for the Sobremesa Brûlée Blue comes out of the Joya de Nicaragua factory. The Blue even has its own packaging - it uses the Sobremesa logo, but incorporates powder blue into the color scheme. Saka blended the original Sobremesa Brûlée to be a milder old school Connecticut Shade cigar. The Sobremesa Brûlée Blue is on the bolder side, delivering a medium strength, medium-bodied experience. As for the flavors, the Brûlée Blue produced notes of sweetened cream, coffee, bread, pepper, butterscotch, and wood. Dunbarton Tobacco & Trust has appeared on every Countdown since the company's inception in 2015. If you are keeping score at home that means it has appeared seven consecutive years on the Countdown - tied for second all time for consecutive years. This also gives the Joya de Nicaragua factory its third cigar on the Countdown, tying Drew Estate. Nicaragua's dominance continues. Of the eighteen cigars we have unveiled moving up the Countdown, this is the thirteenth one from Nicaragua. For details of the 2021 Cigar of the Year Countdown, see our 2021 criteria: https://cigar-coop.com/2021/12/announcement-criteria-for-the-2021-cigar-of-the-year-countdown.html Cigar Coop Report: https://wp.me/p6h1n1-lHK

Originally launched in a Belicoso Fino in 2019, that size landed on the 2020 Countdown at #13. 2020 also saw a couple of line extensions to the Desert Rose line, one of which is a 6 x 44 Lonsdale which lands on this year's Countdown. Rose of Sharon is Southern Draw's premium Connecticut Shade line. Desert Rose utilizes a modified blend from the original Rose of Sharon and features a thicker, heartier Ecuadorian Claro wrapper the company calls “Cloud Grown.” The blend uses a Nicaraguan binder from the Condega region and a combination of Honduran Corojo and Dominican Piloto Cubano. As with all Southern Draw cigars, production comes from A.J. Fernandez's factory in Nicaragua. The Southern Draw Rose of Sharon Desert Rose Lonsdale consists of notes of cream, berry, cedar, baker's spice, and black pepper. This is a cigar that has plenty to offer in terms of flavor nuances and flavor transitions. The flavors delivered are medium-bodied. This cigar is not overpowering - delivering mild to medium strength in the first half before progressing to medium in the second third. This is the fifth year Southern Draw Cigars has landed on the Countdown - all of those years have been consecutive since 2017. Nicaragua continues to be a dominant country of origin for cigars making the 2021 list. Of the 13 cigars we have unveiled moving up the Countdown, this is the ninth one from Nicaragua. I've become more of a medium-bodied cigar smoker over the past 4 or 5 years, and a larger part of that has been Connecticut wrapper cigars. One of my all time favorites was the Balmoral Anejo XO Connecticut (RIP) which was, sadly, discontinued after General Cigar acquire their parent company, Royal Agio, a few years back. I'm still quite bitter about this, but life goes on. I smoked those almost every day which meant I needed to find a replacement. One of my goes to Connecticut cigars before the Balmoral was the EP Carrillo New Wave Connecticut and New Wave Reserva, so I started to smoke more of those. My friend Nimmer Ahmad of Valacari Cigars mentioned to me that he was redoing his Connecticut Shade cigar and asked if I would like to try some samples and help find the next Valacari Connecticut cigar. After many, many samples, we finally decided on what today is called The Messenger. It took me a long time to decide to review this cigar. My thinking was that since I had a hand in deciding which blend to use, that it seemed unfair to rate it. Many people have noticed me smoking them, especially on my Instagram account, and have asked about them. That made me decide to go ahead a do the review. If you think that would make me bias, just listen to my description and ignore the rating. Either way, enjoy the video and pick some of these up when you get a chance. Wrapper: Ecuadorian Connecticut Binder: Nicaraguan Filler: Nicaraguan from Jalapa, Condega & Ometepe Vitola: Robusto Extra Size: 5 1/2 x 54 Price: $8.00/Mazo of 10 $80.00 Final Score: 93

Coming in at #24 is the Joya de Nicaragua Numero Uno Le Premier. One certainly can make the point that Joya de Nicaragua's Numero Uno has become one of the most decorated brands in the company's 50 plus year history. The story of this blend is well-documented. Numero Uno is a project that started out as a private blend where it was handed out to Nicaraguan ambassadors who would gift them to world leaders. It later became a Joya de Nicaragua event-only cigar called Joya de Nicaragua No. 1 – which was a 6 5/8 x 44 Lonsdale. In 2018, that event-only cigar was named the #1 Cigar of the Year on Halfwheel. It was a shocking selection considering the cigar was designated only for events. Following that honor, Joya de Nicaragua decided to rebrand the Joya de Nicaragua No. 1 to Joya de Nicaragua Numero Uno. In 2019, a second size was released known as the Le Premier - a near-Churchill sized offering of the brand. It's the Numero Uno Le Premier that lands on this year's Countdown. The blend for Numero Uno features an Ecuadorian Connecticut Shade wrapper over Nicaraguan binder and fillers. When the original Lonsdale size was created, the blend itself was described as an offshoot of the Joya de Nicaragua Clasico, but still different than the Clasico. Le Premier measures 6 7/8 x 48. Numero Uno is an ongoing production, but one done on a more limited basis. Flavor-wise, the Joya de Nicaragua Numero Uno will give you notes of cream, earth, wood, black pepper, nut, and a signature lemon-citrus note that sets this cigar apart. While the Lonsdale (known as L'Ambassadeur) certainly got a lot of accolades; don't overlook the Le Premier as it actually is the better size. It's also one of the better Connecticut Shade cigars in the near Churchill fort as I have struggled to find high-performing Connecticut Shade cigars in that format. The Joya de Nicaragua Numero Uno marks the fifth year that Joya de Nicaragua has landed on the Cigar Coop Countdown. It is also the third Nicaraguan cigar that has landed on the Countdown as we continue to count up. Coming in at #30 is the Viaje Black and White Connecticut. For over a decade, Viaje has released dozens of small batch production releases. Up until 2020, none of those releases featured a Connecticut Shade wrapper. That all changed in 2020 when Viaje released the Viaje Black and White series. The concept of Viaje Black and White is based on the Black and White Cookie. It consists of a Maduro blend and a Connecticut blend. Just like the Black and White Cookie, the argument is whether to eat the black (maduro) side or white (Connecticut Shade) side. In this case, it's the white side, the Viaje Black and White Connecticut that lands on the Countdown. Viaje often keeps it secret when it comes to the origins and tobaccos of the blend. The Viaje Black and White Connecticut is no exception. The only thing we know about the cigars is that they have a Connecticut Shade wrapper. The binder, fillers, and factory where this cigar was made have been kept secret. The cigar itself comes in one size – a 6 3/4 x 52 perfecto (the Maduro counterpart also comes in the same size). The Viaje Black and White Connecticut delivers flavors of cream, natural tobacco, cedar, citrus, and pepper. These flavors are medium-bodied and countered by medium strength. The flavors delivered are classic in terms of a Connecticut Shade, yet there is enough boldness to put it right on the edge of being a more contemporary smoke. Viaje is no stranger to the Countdown. This marks the seventh year Viaje has landed on the Countdown. It also marks Viaje's first appearance on the Countdown since 2018. For today's International Cigar Lightation Ceremony I'm smoking a K by Karen Berger Connecticut as we celebrate Blue Origin's journey to space. This smoke features a Connecticut Shade wrapper and Nicaraguan binder and filler.
For this Independence Day I've chosen the CAO America for our International Cigar Lightation Ceremony. This beautiful smoke features 2 wrappers grown in the USA, a Connecticut Broadleaf and a Connecticut Shade.
Allan Fee, Narong Va, and Josh Flagner talk about the possible Russell Wilson trade in Seattle, and what a move like that would mean for the Seahawks organization. We also roll into the Tiger Woods news, and where we all were when we heard. From being selfish about it to immediately thinking back to Kobe, we're all over the fairway with our reactions. Narong's Cigar of the Week is a CAO Mortal Coil, a new cigar that brings back Andullo, the oldest fermentation method from the Dominican Republic. Wrapped in Connecticut Broadleaf, with a Connecticut Shade binder and a filler made with Dominican Andullo surrounded by Honduran Jamastran, Nicaraguan Esteli and Dominican Piloto Cubano, CAO Mortal Coil has a deep aroma that brings forth pre-light notes of sweetness and spice. The full-flavored, medium-bodied cigar opens to reveal nuttiness and a creamy, earthy sweetness. (This is also how Narong describes himself.)Check out the CAO Mortal Coil at SmallBatchCigar.com.Follow the hosts!Allan FeeTwitterInstagramNarong VaInstagramJosh FlagnerTwitterInstagram

The Diamond Crown line of cigars from JC Newman are some of the most luxurious cigars around. As my friends over at Famous-Smoke say it,"these aromatic cigars are expertly handcrafted by Tabacalera A. Fuente and Newman families using only the rarest tobaccos and double-fermented Connecticut Shade-grown or Broadleaf Maduro wrappers."It's hard to be into the world of cigars without hearing of at least one of these two brands, so a fantastic smoke should be in my future! The Diamond Crown Robusto No. 5 has a beautiful Ecuadorian Connecticut shade wrapper that begs to be smoked. This vitola is shorter and thicker than a normal robusto, and I can't wait to dive in.After snipping the end with my guillotine, the cold draw is perfect and has flavors of wheat and grass.CigarScore Merch!: https://click.cigarscore.com/merchytUse coupon code CIGARSCORETV to get 15% OFF!Brand: JC NewmanLine: Diamond Crown, No. 5Size: 4.5 x 54Cut: GuillotineLight: TorchPrice: $11.75 - CIGRcoWrapper: Ecuadorian Connecticut shadeBinder: Dominican RepublicFiller: Dominican RepublicSmoke Time: 70 minutesSmoke This Cigar: https://click.cigarscore.com/fs-dc-diamondcrown#CigarScoreTV:::::Find & Rate Where to Smoke Cigars at https://www.cigarscore.comCIGAR DEALS::::::Cigar 5-Packs: https://jo.my/mlunpiCigar 10-Packs: https://jo.my/8kfajfCigar Samplers: https://jo.my/oady8qBoveda Packs: https://jo.my/fbtwzr:::::Get CigarScore Emails - https://www.cigarscore.com/subscribe::::: SOCIAL MEDIA LINKS: Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/cigarscoreTwitter: https://www.twitter.com/cigarscoreInstagram: https://Instagram.com/cigarscore::::: AFFILIATE DISCLAIMER: Hey, so, some of the links in my videos and descriptions are affiliate links. Robby and Randy wrap up (no pun intended) exploring Connecticut Shade cigars as they pair the Desert Rose from Southern Draw Cigars with a bee—in this case, a Pilsner-style ale, to be more specific. The Rose of Sharon Desert Rose was the Dojo's number 2 Cigar of the Year in 2019, so the pressure is high to find a great pairing. Robby and Randy will also review the previous Connecticut Shade pairings and discuss what they have learned.
Robby and Randy continue the journey to find the perfect pairing for a Connecticut Shade-wrapped cigar. On this episode, your hosts pair the Número Uno from Joya de Nicaragua with a Chardonnay. Yes, that's right, it's a delicious cigar paired with a white wine and the only way to find out if this pairing works is to continue the odyssey.
It's the season 2 premiere episode of A Flavor Odyssey. Special guest Nick Perdomo Jr. joins Robby and Randy as they begin their quest to find the perfect pairing. On this episode we start our journey into Connecticut Shade wrappers, pairing one of the most popular cigars on earth: the Perdomo 10th Anniversary Champagne with a Moscow Mule cocktail. Nick will help us get a feel for what the Connecticut Shade wrapper is all about and what to expect when seeking pairings for it.
Varina Farms is a relatively new name in the cigar world. I don't know exactly when they got started, but I see reviews of their products going back to at least 2013. That said, they're 100% new to me.I got the Varina Farms Breakfast Blend Toro in the July box from CIGRco, and I could immediately tell it was unique. The cigar comes completely wrapped in paper. After you take that paper off, you'll find a very light, very appealing looking U.S. Connecticut Shade wrapper. The first few puffs are delicious, and I'm excited to see what Varina Farms has made.CigarScore Merch!: https://click.cigarscore.com/merchytUse coupon code CIGARSCORETV to get 15% off your entire purchase!0:32 - Watch the unboxing! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mFEavy79BeYBrand: Varina FarmsLine: Breakfast BlendSize: 6 x 52Cut: PunchLight: TorchPrice: $6.50 – CIGRcoWrapper: United States, Connecticut ShadeBinder: n/aFiller: Nicaragua, Dominican Republic, HondurasFinal Thoughts:About half-way through the Varina Farms Breakfast Blend Toro, the draw was perfect and the burn was pretty dang even. I also started noticing slight hints of cinnamon, which was a nice thing given that this is a “breakfast cigar.”That said, at a $7 price point, this cigar is great. That's a rockstar price for what I think is a rockstar-cigar. This is a delicious cigar for those times when you want to smoke something on the lighter side.Because this cigar has great flavors, with a great draw and burn, at a great price point, the Varina Farms Breakfast Blend Toro earns a CigarScore 5.#CigarScoreTV #CIGRco #GoodCigarCo:::::Find & Rate Where to Smoke Cigarsat https://www.cigarscore.com:::::Where I buy my cigars: https://click.cigarscore.com/famoussmokePremium Cigar Samplers: https://click.cigarscore.com/fs-premiumsamplers:::::Subscribe to my YouTube Channel! - https://click.cigarscore.com/subscribeonyoutube::::: Gear I Used or Mentioned in This Video :::::Main camera: https://www.ellorywells.com/yt-canon80dMain lens: https://www.ellorywells.com/yt-canon18125mmMusic: https://www.cigarscore.com/musicLapel mic: https://www.ellorywells.com/yt-movolv1Sturdy tripod: https://www.ellorywells.com/yt-tripodTravel camera: https://www.ellorywells.com/yt-canong7xiiHandheld tripod: https://www.ellorywells.com/yt-manfrotto:::::SOCIAL MEDIA LINKS: Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/cigarscoreTwitter: https://www.twitter.com/cigarscoreInstagram: https://Instagram.com/cigarscore:::::AFFILIATE DISCLAIMER: Hey, so, some of the links in my videos and descriptions are affiliate links. Who knew that until the middle of the last century, East Granby, Connecticut, was a center for Connecticut Shade, a hand-tended tobacco leaf used as a wrapper for premium cigars? And that the work, which relied a lot on summer migrants, many students from the South, once included Martin Luther King? Keith Scribner knew because he spent a lot of time in East Granby when he was young, and he knows that growing and harvesting tobacco is a back-breaking chore. That he makes this dying industry the backdrop for a tale about generational domestic violence in his new book, “Old Newgate Road,” is inspired. It’s thirty years since Cole Callahan, an environmentally sensitive and successful architect, escaped from East Granby to the West Coast. As the novel opens, Cole, now 45, has returned to the Connecticut Valley to meet a colleague who’s arranging a shipment for him of American chestnut wood. He takes the occasion to drive to his former home on Old Newgate Road. The house is a white colonial
Today I'm smoking a cigar that, at first, I didn't want to buy. Initially, I was not interested in the Perdomo Champagne because of it's light-colored wrapper and the gold-ish colored cellophane that holds the cigar. Was I wrong to avoid the Perdomo Reserve 10th Anniversary Cabinet Series Champagne? Or, was it a pleasant surprise? Let's find out!Buy this cigar: https://famous-smoke.7eer.net/drxPkLink to 5 Cigars that Made My Career: Nick Perdomo: https://famous-smoke.7eer.net/27OYzMy Zino Platinum Review: https://youtu.be/-i56DCtbjcoInitial Thoughts:I first heard about the Perdomo Champagne when we were in Rockford, Illinois. Mike, the owner of Rudy's Cigars, told me about this cigar, but I was hesitant to try it because of the cigar's light color. The Perdomo Champagne, a.k.a. Perdomo Reserve 10th Anniversary Cabinet Series Champagne is an interesting cigar. Nick Perdomo, the founder of Perdomo Cigars, said the Champagne was one of the five cigars that made his career and which put his company on the map. After smoking just the first inch, I can already see why. The flavors are fantastic, the wrapper is just about perfect, and the Nicaraguan filler tobacco provides a punch of flavor underneath the Connecticut shade wrapper.Brand: PerdomoLine: 10th Anniversary Cabinet Series ChampagneSize: 5 x 54Cut: PunchLight: TorchPrice: $8Final Thoughts:Wow, what a surprise. I never expected the Perdomo Champagne to have as much flavor as it did. Nick Perdomo has managed to pack full flavors into a cigar with a Connecticut Shade wrapper that deceives the eyes. Aside from a minor issue in the middle, this cigar had an even burn. The punch provided a slightly tight but consistent draw that allowed me to get plenty of smoke in each puff. However, toward the end of the middle third of the cigar, I started noticing some harshness to the smoke. It wasn't bad, but it was noticeable, and it might be a reason fans of lighter cigars would want to approach the Perdomo Champagne caution. Because of this harshness and the slight burn issues, I give the Perdomo Champagne Robusto a CigarScore of 4, and I would happily smoke it again.:::::Find & Rate Where to Smoke Cigars at https://www.cigarscore.comWhere I buy my cigars: https://click.cigarscore.com/famoussmokePremium Cigar Samplers: https://click.cigarscore.com/fs-premiumsamplers:::::Subscribe to my YouTube Channel! - https://click.cigarscore.com/subscribeonyoutube::::: Gear I Used or Mentioned in This Video :::::Main camera: https://www.ellorywells.com/yt-canon80dMain lens: https://www.ellorywells.com/yt-canon18125mmMusic: https://www.cigarscore.com/musicLapel mic: https://www.ellorywells.com/yt-movolv1Sturdy tripod: https://www.ellorywells.com/yt-tripodTravel camera: https://www.ellorywells.com/yt-canong7xiiHandheld tripod: https://www.ellorywells.com/yt-manfrotto:::::SOCIAL MEDIA LINKS: Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/cigarscoreTwitter: https://www.twitter.com/cigarscoreInstagram: https://Instagram.com/cigarscore:::::AFFILIATE DISCLAIMER: Hey, so, some of the links in my videos and descriptions are affiliate links. A cigar 5 years in the making. Jesus Fuego and XIKAR have been working to perfect this blend. Made with Ecuadorian Connecticut Shade, this blend proves to be slightly stronger than the average Connecticut Shade cigar, while staying true to a Connecticut's character! Wrapper: Connecticut Shade - Ecuador Binder: Sumatra Filler: Costa Rica, Mexico, Nicaragua Robusto: 5 x 50; Lonsdale: 6 x 46; Belicoso: 6 x 52; Toro: 6.5 x 52; Grande: 6 x 60 Colin's Cigar of the Week - La Casita Criolla by Tatuaje This new line from Pete Johnson features 100% Broadleaf tobacco. An homage to the broadleaf cigars made in the U.S. many years ago, this is a departure from the other Tatuaje lines. I was fortunate enough to smoke these on a factory trip to Nicaragua this year when they were being produced. In fact, we smoked a ton of them. One would expect 100% broadleaf to be sweet and chewy in flavor, and that it is. While the factory buys a ton of great broadleaf to be used for wrapper leaf, there are filler leaves from the plant as well - seco and viso - and these are used in the blend. They are not as dark in color as the wrapper leaves that you are used to on broadleaf wrapped vitolas, but don't be fooled by the normal looking filler - it is all broadleaf and it is unlike anything in the Tatuaje family to date. La Casita Criolla falls in the medium range, with a distinctly pleasant taste profile of sweetness. An everyday, or multiples per day, smoke. I try to get a good idea of the different kinds of cigars out there. I've seen many people in forums talk of online retailers selling variety packs, but nobody is specific about what is good or not, etc. Lets say that in a week I'm going to walk into my local B&M with about $50 in my pocket... what should I buy to get a good variety of cigars to try? A Big thank you to Dan Crouch for his generosity in providing this week's unbanded cigar. Bob: Very tasty, just enough spice and a darkness to the flavors. A little sourness in the mouth; retrohale is sour. Palio Cutter Contest: The July contest winner of a classic black Palio cutter will be announced in next week's show. Remember, you must re-enter each month to be eligible to win the featured Palio cutter. Do you have a suggestion for the unbanded cigar of the week? The history of General Cigar began in 1848 when Ferdinand Cullman immigrated to the US from Germany. His grandson made one of the greatest contributions to the cigar world: the Connecticut Shade wrapper. In 1960, Cullman Brothers bought General Cigar Company and became the largest manufacturer and marketer of premium cigars with impressive brands. In 1997, General Cigar acquired Villazon, the maker of such iconic brands as Punch, Hoyo de Monterrey, and Excalibur. Later, General Cigar assumed responsibility for marketing and selling El Credito, whose brands include La Gloria Cubana and El Rico Habano. In 1999, General Cigar sold its mass market business to Swedish Match in order to concentrate strictly on premium brands. In 2000, Swedish Match assumed majority control of General through a stock purchase from Edgar Cullman and family members. Other important brands have been acquired recently, including Helix, Don Tomas and Astral in 2004. Their factory in Santiago, Dominican Republic is run by General Cigar Dominicana, a subsidiary of General Cigar Co., which began processing tobacco in 1975, and started producing cigars in 1978. The Punch Upper Cut was released in October 2009. Handmade in Honduras with its filler and binder tobaccos grown in Ometepe, Nicaragua, this cigar is perfectly finished with an attractive dark and oily Ecuador Sumatra wrapper. Each cigar has a footband complete with the image of Ometepe and its twin volcanoes Toro | Length: 6.62 | Ring: 54 Grand Corona | Length: 6 | Ring: 45 Robusto | Length: 5.25 | Ring: 50 Dark Side - - No Dark Side this week. In 2008 the Morado Torpedo was named Best Cigar of the Year, although the title came with an asterisk, “That you can't find and never heard of.” We first interviewed Doug way back at the 2006 IPCPR, before he was famous. Doug has one of the most extensive and beautiful collections of cigar art to be found anywhere and he uses that art on his cigars. The Robusto that I smoked had sweet chocolate, coffee and fruity elements in the flavor that finished with a distinctly herbal twist. A well constructed cigar with outstanding draw and flavor. A keeper and yes I would buy one again IF I could find someplace that carries them. Doug Wood states: "We wish we had enough of this tobacco to produce several years' worth of our new Black Pearl Morado (Purple) premium cigar but, its featured Cameroon wrapper is in shorter supply than we expected, so we can only offer limited supplies of Morado in three shapes: Robusto (4.75" x 52) Toro (6" x 50), and Torpedo (6.25" x 52)." Bob and Dale bring in the new year with a live show! Bob interviews Walter Briggs of WB Brand Cigars. Angry Bill calls in on the herf line to review the Anarchy. Bryan Wolters from Menasha, Wisconsin wins the Burl Palio Cutter in the December contest. Now you can get the same great DogWatch episodes delivered to your Android device! Click here for details. Cigar of the Week - Walter Briggs Torpedo Maduro. The Maduro is medium strength with a Brazilian wrapper. The filler is long leaf Dominican and Nicaraguan. The binder is a Connecticut Shade from Ecuador. This cigar has sweet spiciness with nuances of roasted coffee and cocoa. It received a 3.5 of 4.0 rating from CigarCyclopedia. The Maduro comes in the following types and sizes:
Cigar of the Week - Cain Maduro The Oliva Cigar Company and Sam Lecia introduced a new cigar during 2009, called the ‘Cain.’ It comes in three sizes: 550 Robusto 5.7x50, 654T Torpedo 6x54, and a 660 Double Toro 6x60. The Cain is available in a Maduro or Habano wrapper. The CAIN is primarily ligero tobacco! Sam Leccia (Mr. ‘Nub’) has challenged all of us to try this very interesting blend and see how it measures up to Oliva’s Serie V, which is a double ligero. The cigar is a blend of aged ligero tobacco from Esteli, Condega, and the Jalapa Valley in Nicaragua, some of the tastiest growing regions in the world. Tonight we focus on the Maduro which sports a dark, rich, San Andreas wrapper to the 25% Esteli Ligero, 27% Condega Ligero and 30% Jalapa Ligero blend (I am no math major but that leaves 18% unaccounted for). According to the Cain website: Esteli Ligero is the strongest of all the Ligeros and as such needs to be tempered with other flavors or types of Ligero to prevent overpowering the cigar. Condega Ligero is a medium body Ligero grown north of Esteli that exhibits complex richness and a tame strength. Jalapa Ligero is the smoothest of these Ligeros and grown in the northern most area of Nicaragus. The Jalapa Valley is a unigue tobacco growing region that enjoys less direct sunlight and produces a full body leaf with a broader range of flavor. Dark Side - PUNCH ROYAL SELECCION NO 12 Length: 5 1/8 inches (129mm) Ring Gauge: 42 Factory Name: Marevas Shape: Parejo A cigar of real substance that requires some aging for best results, 5 years being the recommended time. The Punch brand was first registered in 1840 by a German named Stockman. This was at the beginning of an era that saw Cuba carved up by three major powers, US, Germany and Britian. The official Habanos web site skips over this part of history instead claiming the brand was founded by Don Manuel Lopez of Juan Valle & Co in the mid 19th Century with an eye to the booming British market. However, reality shows that the brand was transferred to Louis Corojo in 1874, the midst of the "10 Year War" for independence, one of many uprisings in Cuban history. In 1925 Punch moved to the factory where Hoyo de Monterrey was made and this long association continues to the present day. From then until 1930 the brand changed ownership twice finally settling in after the stock market crash of 1929 with Fernandez & Palicio y Cia S en C. . By 1958 Punch was a solid market cigar accounting for %13 of cigars exported. Punch shared the market with Belinda, Hoyo de Monterrey and La Escepcion. Punch has remained a leading brand of Habanos cigars since the 1959 revolution. Many have claimed that the cigar was named for the famous British humour magazine Punch, however that magazine did not exist until 1841, one year after the cigar name was registered. Punch’s distinct medium flavour created with a blend of tobaccos from the Vuelta Abajo region is available in a wide variety of sizes "totalmente a mano, tripa larga" - totally hand made, long filler. Herf line submissions: Angry Bill calls in to talk about the Nosotros cigar and the H. Upmann Magnum 50. Call the Herfline, 321-594-4373! - or cigar.radio on Skype, and leave a message or a cigar review. You can also send email to theshow@cigarmedia.tv What else have you been smokin' Dale? La Gloria Cubana Artesanos de Tabaqueros 650 - a new line from LCG, the 2nd edition in the Artesanos series. Unlike the Artesanos de Miami, this line is made in the El Credito factory in the Dominican Republic by a "hand picked group of 18 master cigar makers, chosen by Benji Menedez himself". The blend is all 5 year aged tobaccos from the DR and Honduras with a combination of Connecticut Shade AND Ecuadorian Sumatra wrappers. The lighter Connecticut wrapper covers about the first 3rd of the cigar, with the darker Sumatra wrapper visible from there to the head. The line is available in 3 sizes, named for their dimensions - 650, 652 Belicoso and 750, ranging from $8 to $9 before all the confiscatory tobacco taxes in your local area. Punch Gran Cru Robusto Claro - This 5.25" x 50 beauty is filled with Dominican, Honduran and Nicaraguan tobaccos, covered with a Honduras binder and wrapped with a Connecticut Shade leaf that is smooth, oily and aromatic. This is a cigar with tons of complexity in a smooth, lighter bodied style than other Punch lines. Lots of leather, sweet herbals and a touch of nuttiness. For me, a great mid-day cigar when you have the time to really let it carry you away. CAO Brazilia Gol! - 5" x 56 - Bob mentioned this line last week and that reminded me to go back & smoke it again. I used to smoke these by the box a couple years ago, but with so many new cigars always coming out, had just not bought any in a while. Nicaraguan filler & binder are wrapped up in a dark Arapiraka wrapper from Brazil. Yummm! What else have you been smokin' Bob? Punch Uppercut Grand Corona - First thing I noticed was the sloppy application of the cap, certainly not a deal breaker and at $6.50 per stick I was wiling to overlook such a harmless defect. The interesting thing though was that it even registered with me since I don't normally notice such characteristics. Retrohale exhibits some interesting subtle spiciness which then becomes noticeable in the flavors. Noted a sour spice that is not like grass or straw but is really very pleasant with coffee. Padilla Dominus Double Robusto - Corojo 2006 wrapper Several complex savory flavors including spice and black pepper; this blend keeps your interest from start to finish. Excellent construction, great burn and has a long pleasant finish. Graycliff Blue Label Profesionale PGX 6x50 - Smooth-burning, Indonesian wrapper and tobacco from Brazil, the Dominican Republic and Nicaragua. The most pleasant Graycliff I have ever smoked. Brazilian, Nicaraguan, and Dominican fillers and a very tasty Indonesian Sumatran wrapper. One of the most beautiful cigars with no imperfections. Slightly more full flavored than other Graycliffs, I found this to be an excellent experience.
