Ferio Tego introduced the Summa line at the 2023 PCA trade show in Las Vegas.  It follows the initial limited offerings of Ferio Tego:  Elegancia and Generoso.  The Summa is the first core line for Ferio Tego. “The word summa means a ‘comprehensive work', a ‘summary or a synthesis of the body of work' thus far. Ferio Tego Summa is a blend that embodies the diversity and complexity of the Ferio Tego Portfolio,” explained Ferio Tego co-owner, Michael Herklots in a press release. “The Summa blend highlights the incredible trifecta of body, flavor and intensity… and maximizes those levels with wonderful balance.” Ferio Tego describes the cigar in their press release: The Ferio Tego Summa is an abundant cigar that is full flavored and full bodied with an intensity that is present, but graceful. The flavors are structured in such a way that creates a subtle but relentless crescendo of flavor and complexity without becoming overbearing. The velvety mouth feel preserves a lingering finish that skews towards a darker style of flavors but is complimented by an underlying buttery note that adds a touch of levity to the blend.  Each Ferio Tego Summa vitola tells a unique version of the Summa story.  The Summa was initially release in four size, but recently Ferio Tego announced the addition of a toro size.  The Summa comes in a 10-ct hinged Okume box: Corona Gorda (5 3/4 x 46, $18.00 MSRP/cigar) Robusto (5 x 50, $19.00 MSRP/cigar) Torpedo (6 1/4 x 52, MSRP $20.00/cigar) Gordo (6 x 60, $21.00 MSRP/cigar) Toro (6 x 50, $19.50 MSRP/cigar) Blend Information Vitola:  Corona Gorda Wrapper: Ecuadorian Corojo Binder: Ecuadorian Sumatra Filler: Nicaraguan, Dominican Country of Origin: Dominican Republic Factory: Tabacos de Exportación (TABADEX) MSRP:  $18.00 Final Score: 91

196 | A New Approach to an Old Business Model: How Cigar Entrepreneur Michael Herklots Built a Successful Brand on a Tight Budget

The Business of You with Rachel Gogos

Marketing your business on a budget?  In this episode, Michael Herklots shares how he used the power of storytelling and personal branding to build his luxury cigar business from the ground up. Michael has worked in the Premium Cigar Industry since 1999. He served as Vice President of Nat Sherman International, responsible for creating and maintaining the company's portfolio of premium cigars, pipe tobaccos, and accessories. Most recently, he is the co-founder of Ferio Tego, which has been named the “Brand of the Year” by Cigar Dojo and “New Company of the Year” by Halfwheel.  Michael is a Certified Master Tobacconist by Tobacconist University and a thoughtful business leader with 20 years of experience in specialty retail and wholesale luxury goods.  The Power of Storytelling When Michael and his co-founder decided to launch a cigar company during COVID-19, there was no shortage of obstacles. Aside from the challenge of selling cigars during a respiratory pandemic, they also had limited capital. Without the budget to hire a marketing team or ad agency, they leaned on something more powerful: their story.  Over and over again, they told the story of Ferio Tego, their backgrounds in the cigar industry, and their vision for the brand. Both Michael and his co-founder Brendon Scott had plenty of connections in the cigar world, but they took a unique approach to every conversation. Every time they met with a potential partner, they would lean into different aspects of their story. For instance, smaller companies were more likely to relate to their story of bootstrapping the business from the ground up, while larger companies wanted to see the data and volume.  Innovate the Process, Not the Product In today's fast-paced world, many companies shift their marketing and add new products every week–but ultimately, that hurts your brand recognition and makes it harder for retailers to sell your products. The more consistent you stay, the greater the chance consumers will start to relate to and remember your brand.  While the Ferio Tego brand is consistent, Michael is constantly innovating other aspects of the business. He and his co-founder have taken a unique approach in partnering with other cigar companies. They now have factories in multiple countries without the overhead of managing their own warehouses. Enjoy this episode with founder Michael Herklots… Soundbytes 17:46-18:30 “New businesses, we don't have a marketing budget, we don't have an advertising agency. We don't have four people who are building decks on what is Ferio Tego and what isn't Ferio Tego and creating all of those thoughtful pyramids. Who has time for that? We're fighting for our lives every day, trying to get another sale. And so what we lack in that sophisticated, deep infrastructure of brand, we have what a lot of those departments crave and try to create which is the absolute authentic story of time served and process and how we do things.” 19:20-19:37 “What they are trying to do is to create brands that feel authentic, whereas we have, just as a consequence of being a small startup, we're creating a brand that is authentic. What you see is what you get.” 27:09-27:37  “As a Brand Builder and a storyteller, it's incumbent on me to tell the same story over and over and over again consistently, so that you as a retailer, can tell the same story over and over to your consumers. The consumers can learn that story and share it with their peers, and by the time they learn it, they can catch back up with the brand, and we're still singing the same song. We've abandoned that in so many industries.”  54:04-54:50 “There are times when you look at something that just seems so overwhelming, whether it's something as small as playing a gig, or something as big as launching a company. And to get over the hump of it, I have to believe that the opportunity and the idea and the consideration–all of the work has been done for a reason. All those opportunities are lined up for a reason and therefore I have to have faith that this is meant to be.”  Quotes “They're trying to create brands that feel authentic, whereas we, as a consequence of being a small startup, are creating a brand that is authentic.” “As a Brand Builder and a storyteller, it's incumbent on me to tell the same story over and over and over again consistently.” “It's become innovative to go back to building the brand.” “It's probably naive to think that it's possible to be everything to everyone. What I try to do is be something to everyone.” “I don't know anyone who would consider themselves an expert. Even the most famous, most successful are still practicing all the time.” “You have to live within what's authentic to you and let your audience find you.” Links mentioned in this episode: Learn more about Ferio Tego cigars: https://www.feriotego.com/ Connect with Michael on LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/michaelherklots/

Coming in at #17 is the Ferio Tego Generoso. Ferio Tego is the company launched by Nat Sherman International alumni Michael Herklots and Brendon Scott. When Ferio Tego began, it acquired and relaunched many of the brands from Nat Sherman International. The company also launched two annual limited-edition cigars under its own name. One cigar was the Ferio Tego Elegancia, which placed at number 25 on this year's countdown. The other was the Ferio Tego Generoso, which we unveil today at number 17. The Generoso is produced at the Plasencia Factory in Nicaragua, a long-time manufacturing partner of the brands from Nat Sherman. The blend consists of a shade-grown wrapper from Honduras over a blend of all-Nicaraguan tobaccos. The Generoso comes in one size – a 6 x 50 Toro. The Generoso is a completely different cigar than its sibling, the Elegancia. It's got some boldness to it as it delivered a medium to full cigar in terms of strength and body. It delivers a mix of earth, bing cherry, cedar, mineral, and pepper. While the notes themselves might seem unique, the way they complement each other is quite unique and results in an enjoyable series. As we mentioned with the Elegancia, 2022 is the first year Ferio Tego has landed on the Countdown. We have unveiled 14 cigars thus far, and Ferio Tego is also the first company to land two cigars on the 2022 Countdown. For those keeping score, we have unveiled 14 cigars thus far, and ten of them have come from Nicaragua. In addition, we have had 13 different companies and 13 different factories place cigars on the Countdown. Full Report: https://wp.me/p6h1n1-ol7

Last year, Ferio Tego was connecting with customers. Since then, the company has brought the former Nat Sherman brands of Metropolitan, Timeless, and Ancora back to market. It also introduced its own eponymous flagship line. It was an enormous amount of work for a small company, and judging by the activity at the Ferio Tego booth, it was well worth it. Ferio Tego's Herklots joined Boveda's Rob Gagner at 2021 PCA in Las Vegas for this episode of Box Press, the cigar lifestyle podcast. Metropolitan and Timeless cigars are alive today because of Herklots and his business partner Brendon Scott. When the now-defunct Nat Sherman International closed, the two former employees started a cigar company with saved legacy brands and cigar accessories and two new blends, Elegancia and Generoso. Highlights of the cigar conversation with Herklots include: 6:00 Getting a job at a tobacco shop to pay for his cigar hobby 8:01 Succeeding at work is doing more than your job 13:30 Wearing a guayabera and Panama hat while standing in the middle of a tobacco field smelling green leaves is not him 15:50 Comparing wine to cigars 19.50 Learning how to blend a cigar 22:28 Blending the Quesada 35th 25:31 Smoking unfermented tobacco in a cigar 47:29 Growing popularity of “meme” cigars 1:01:13 Listening to a favorite song is like smoking a legacy cigar You can protect your cigars just like cigars makers. From the 2021 PCA Trade Show, we talk to Michael Herklots of Ferio Tego. Ferio Tego's primary goals at the 2021 Premium Cigar Association (PCA) Trade Show were twofold: 1) Connect with customers; 2) Support the Trade Association. While these are the goals of many companies at the PCA Trade Show, what was different was Ferio Tego was not writing up orders at the Trade Show. Michael Herklots has said the plan was before relaunching the former Nat Sherman Brands (Timeless, Metropolitan, and Epoca) there would be the launch of a limited edition brand known as Ferio Tego. He had hoped that by the Trade Show Ferio Tego would have been ready, but that did not happen. While he expects Ferio Tego to launch this summer, rather than take orders on something that wasn't ready to go, a decision was made to not take orders. At the same time Ferio Tego wanted to be a part of the Trade Show. This included connecting with former and potentially future customers. It also included supporting the association. This year, Ferio Tego sponsored the "Finish Your Cigar" booth, where attendees could finish their cigar before heading on to the area's convention show where smoking is prohibited. This strategy worked and there is a definite excitement in the air for what Ferio Tego will bring to the table. References PCA 2021 Report: Ferio Tego

The history of General Cigar began in 1848 when Ferdinand Cullman immigrated to the US from Germany. His grandson made one of the greatest contributions to the cigar world: the Connecticut Shade wrapper. In 1960, Cullman Brothers bought General Cigar Company and became the largest manufacturer and marketer of premium cigars with impressive brands. In 1997, General Cigar acquired Villazon, the maker of such iconic brands as Punch, Hoyo de Monterrey, and Excalibur. Later, General Cigar assumed responsibility for marketing and selling El Credito, whose brands include La Gloria Cubana and El Rico Habano. In 1999, General Cigar sold its mass market business to Swedish Match in order to concentrate strictly on premium brands. In 2000, Swedish Match assumed majority control of General through a stock purchase from Edgar Cullman and family members. Other important brands have been acquired recently, including Helix, Don Tomas and Astral in 2004. Their factory in Santiago, Dominican Republic is run by General Cigar Dominicana, a subsidiary of General Cigar Co., which began processing tobacco in 1975, and started producing cigars in 1978. The Punch Upper Cut was released in October 2009. Handmade in Honduras with its filler and binder tobaccos grown in Ometepe, Nicaragua, this cigar is perfectly finished with an attractive dark and oily Ecuador Sumatra wrapper. Each cigar has a footband complete with the image of Ometepe and its twin volcanoes Toro | Length: 6.62 | Ring: 54 Grand Corona | Length: 6 | Ring: 45 Robusto | Length: 5.25 | Ring: 50 Dark Side - - No Dark Side this week. What else have you been smokin' Dale? Man o’ War Salomone El Credito Perridos Bolivar Belicoso Fino Cohiba Siglo VI What else have you been smokin' Bob? PDR 1878 Cubano Especial Seleccion RL 2000 - Wrapper is Lancaster, Pa leaf; binder is the Criollo 98 from the Dominican Republic; and the filler is Nicaraguan and Dominican Republic. Medium bodied but full of great flavors of aged tobacco; slightly sweet with a salty sensation on the tip of the tongue. A mind melting experience that will cleanse the body of stress and free the mind. Tatuaje Especiale - Great opening pepper that mellows into a sweet spicy joy punctuated with leather and mocha. Size: 7.5 x 38 (Especiales/Lancero) Wrapper: Nicaragua Corojo 99 Binder: Nicaragua Filler: Nicaragua Strength: Medium Black Pearl Morada - Doug Woods has survived more ups and downs and pure crashes than perhaps anyone in the cigar business. In 2008 the Morado Torpedo was named Best Cigar of the Year, although the title came with an asterisk, “That you can't find and never heard of.” We first interviewed Doug way back at the 2006 IPCPR, before he was famous. Doug has one of the most extensive and beautiful collections of cigar art to be found anywhere and he uses that art on his cigars. The Robusto that I smoked had sweet chocolate, coffee and fruity elements in the flavor that finished with a distinctly herbal twist. A well constructed cigar with outstanding draw and flavor. A keeper and yes I would buy one again IF I could find someplace that carries them. Doug Wood states: "We wish we had enough of this tobacco to produce several years' worth of our new Black Pearl Morado (Purple) premium cigar but, its featured Cameroon wrapper is in shorter supply than we expected, so we can only offer limited supplies of Morado in three shapes: Robusto (4.75" x 52) Toro (6" x 50), and Torpedo (6.25" x 52)." What's My Band? - this week's Unbanded Cigar is the Licenciados Toro 6 1/2 x 50. May Palio Cutter Contest Winner: Tim Delaney, a proud member of our military, won the Classic Black Palio Cutter. This week Colin Ganley of CigarTourism.com and Bob talk about the January 2011 trip to Nicaragua in which Bob will be participating. Also this week, the debut of "What's Hot, What's Not, What's Next" - Cigar retailers from around the country share buyer passions and passes and let us know what new releases are on order. This week Michael Herklots from Davidoff of Geneva, New York city stores (Madison Avenue and The Shops at Columbus Circle); Heather Haddad from Fumee Cigar Lounge in Austin, Texas; and Doug Fiore from Winston's Humidor in Midlothian, Virginia share their insights. Cigar of the Week - Esteban Carreras 5150 - The Esteban Carreras 5150 series is a medium bodied Corojo with an Ecuadorian grown Sumatra wrapper and Nicaraguan fillers and binder. Dark Side - RAMON ALLONES SMALL CLUB CORONAS Length: 110 Ring: 42 Format: Minuto Ramón Allones is one of the big names in the history of Habanos. Founded in 1837, it is also one of the oldest brands in production. A Galician by birth, Ramón Allones was the first cigar manufacturer to pack his cigars in boxes decorated with labels and stamped with his brand's emblem. He was the pioneer of the packaging that we know today. All of the Ramon Allones cigars are filled with a blend of tobaccos from the Vuelta Abajo region, characterised by their intense and complex taste. What else have you been smokin' Colin? Cruzado Mario What else have you been smokin' Dale? Torano Single Region Serie Jalapa Robusto 5 x 52 - One of the most exciting releases from IPCPR if you are into understanding how tobacco from one specific region tastes. In this case, all the tobacco in the Jalapa series comes from one farm in the Jalapa area of Nicaragua. It's very hard to make a deep, rich, complex blend from just one area, but Torano has done it with this cigar! Well balanced in strength, roundness and body, with earthy flavors & natural sweetness. The room aroma is a touch spicy and intoxicating! Try one of these to sample the character of Jalapa tobacco. Don Francisco Lancero - A gift to me from ER Doc during his visit last month, this cigar was perhaps the most flavorful cigar I smoked this week. Layer upon layer of tastes kept building, providing one of the most complex cigars I've had in a long time. Superb construction allowed a slow, cool smoke. Full bodied and medium in strength, the list of flavors noted is way long, but in the main; nuts, citrus, espresso, cedar and vanilla were the highlights. Casa Magna Colorado and Casa Magna Sungrown What else have you been smokin' Bob? CAO La Traviata Maduro - La Traviata Maduro is everything the La Traviata cigar should have been last year; why it took CAO a year to make the right cigar is beyond me. They ruined the Brazillia by making it in a monster 60 rg; however, this cigar makes up for it. The La Traviata Maduro proves that CAO can make good cigars without going all Hollywood. Torano Master - New blend from the Torano family. Carlos Torano has broken the mold at Torano CIgars and produced a slightly more full flavored cigar that is complex and pleasing. An outstanding cigar with complex flavor and great construction. Year after year the Torano family continues to put out fine cigars and now they are once again in charge of their own distribution. If you thought they only did mild-medium cigars, smoke this and you will change your mind. Macanudo Cru Royale - For me this was the biggest surprise of the IPCPR; it has flavor; it has style; and it has great construction. I want more of these. The Cru Royale demonstrates that General Cigar is not stuck in the past nor are they afraid to take a chance. I was disappointed in the results of using Ometepe tobacco in their other blends and this cigar shows you don't need trickery or gimmicks to make an excellent cigar. The PUNCH Upper Cut was a bland result of too many taste tests and committee work that resulted in a bland and disappointing cigar. The Cru Royale landed a hook on the Uppercut to put it on the mat. What's My Band? - #921 from Liz H. Upmann Reserve Maduro 5x50 Robusto with wonderful pre-smoke barnyard aromas. August Palio Cutter Contest Winner: Dave Wallace won a gold Palio Cutter. Enter the September contest to win a classic black Palio Cutter.
