Charles and Graham welcome special guest, musician, Chantel McGregor. Bradford born, Chantel is a rock musician and female guitar prodigy, who enrolled at the Leeds College of Music and became the first student in the college's history, to achieve a 100% pass mark at BTEC, with 18 distinctions. Chantel followed this with a First Class Honours degree in Popular Music and a coveted prize, the college's musician of the year award. Her critically acclaimed 2011 debut album, Like No Other was followed by second album, Lose Control, in 2015 on her independent boutique label Tis Rock Music. Subsequently she has released the Shed Sessions albums, volume 1 and 2. After many years of touring and festival appearances, Chantel has made a gradual transition from conventional Blues to a harder, bigger and bolder rock sound with progressive influences. She is currently on a national tour which includes a date at Ripley Town Hall on 20 July.Graham reflects on the strange nature of 1970s albums with elaborate 'fold out' sleeves, as typified by Isaac Hayes' 1971 double album Black Moses.Charles raises the issue of Rich Sunak's latest policy ahead of the General Election on 4 July - the decision to introduce a new National Service scheme and wonders if the arts can benefit from those who want to volunteer in the community rather than the military.Keep in touch with Two Big Egos in a Small Car:X@2big_egosFacebook@twobigegos
Marcus Garvey was a prominent figure in Black nationalism and Pan-Africanism, whose ideology, known as Garveyism, continues to influence African pride and unity. Garvey championed the back-to-Africa movement, advocating for the empowerment of Africans and the African diaspora in the face of poverty, discrimination, and colonialism. We discuss Garvey's vision, the challenges he faced from Western authorities, and ongoing debates surrounding his legacy. Follow us on IG: itsacontinentpod and Twitter: itsacontinent. CAN YOU DIG IT?SHAFT by Isaac Hayes (Enterprise, 1971)As a 19 year old, I didn't realize that history was being made, but when I saw Isaac Hayes on the Oscars, bedecked in chain-mail, at the keyboard, being wheeled onstage in a cloud of dry ice to sing The Theme From Shaft, I knew something was up. The chicka-chicka of the wah-wah guitar riff had already surgically implanted in my head by AM radio, along with Haye's chilled delivery of “That Shaft is a baaaad Mutha…” Together, these elements excited the entire country in new and electric ways. Richard Roundtree said years later that he had an instinct that John Shaft would certainly be the best role of his career - (Hayes was considered, but Gordon Parks wisely persuaded The Black Moses to create the indelible ambience instead) - but, he couldn't have prepared for the seismic impact that this film would deliver. Director Parks wanted to make a “fun” picture with a Black Action Hero, but Shaft transcended all that. All the creatives and many of the crew were also black; it was filmed largely in Harlem, and tapped into the prevailing Black Power aesthetic zeitgeist, and the film changed the “Blaxploitation” genre forever. Before Shaft, MGM had been struggling, but the studio was rescued by the film, which made 13 million from a half a mil budget. The soundtrack, with it's laid back, jazz infused arrangements by Johnny Allen, and bolstered by Haye's compatriots at Stax, The Bar-Kays, went platinum. In 2014 it was entered into The Library of Congress list of essential recordings. I coveted a black leather coat like the one that Shaft wore - but the closest I could get was a brown bomber jacket. Nobody was as cool as Shaft or Isaac Hayes - nobody could be. “Damn Straight!”

The 2022 Premium Cigar Association (PCA) Trade Show marked the second one for Howard G Cigars. Last year, the company launched and came out with several lines. The company is owned by Howard Gumbs Jr. and already has several brands in the portfolio including Magic Stick, Black Moses, and the All Pro Series. The All Pro Series has Gumbs partnering with two of his friends, Ike Taylor and Leon Searcy who have had stellar NFL careers. This year each of the brands in the portfolio saw something new come to the Trade Show. If there was a theme with this year's offerings by Howard G, it would be adding Connecticut Shade offerings to several of the brands. This year, we found Howard G Cigars to be one of the revelations of the show. The company brings an excellent portfolio of cigars, and some wonderful people behind the brand. Mark Ribowsky: Black Moses: The hot buttered life and soul of Isaac Hayes...with TRE's Giles Brown
The first biography of soul pioneer Isaac Hayes, whose groundbreaking music provided the foundation for hip-hop and a new racial paradigm. This new musical and cultural coda delivered Hayes the first Oscar ever won by a Black musician, as well as the Grammy for Best Song. Yet, few know Hayes's remarkable achievements. In this compelling buffet of sight and sound, acclaimed music biographer Mark Ribowsky— who has authored illuminating portraits of such luminaries as Stevie Wonder, Little Richard, and Otis Redding—gallops through the many stages of Hayes's daring and daunting life, starting with Hayes's difficult childhood in which his mother died young and his father abandoned him. Ribowsky then takes readers through Hayes's rise at Memphis's legendary soul factory, Stax Records, first as a piano player on Otis Redding sessions then as a songwriter and producer teamed with David Porter. Hayes's subsequent career as a solo artist featured studio methods and out-of-the-box ideas that paved the way for soul to occupy the top of the album charts alongside white rock albums. But his prime years ended prematurely, both as a consequence of f Stax's red ink and his own self-destructive tendencies.

One of the more controversial black leaders, Marcus Garvey divided black and white Americans with his assertion of black pride, and sowed division in the black community as well. This week, our contemporary art correspondent Louisa Buck visits the exhibition Testament at Goldsmiths CCA in London, where 47 artists have been invited to make proposals that ponder the idea of tearing down and erecting monuments and what it might mean to rethink them. Louisa talks to Sarah McCrory, the director of Goldsmiths CCA, and to Adham Faramawy, one of the artists in the show. In Rome, a villa with ceiling paintings by Caravaggio and Guercino with a price tag of €471m failed to attract any bids. The Art Newspaper's founder Anna Somers Cocks, who's based in Turin, tells us why. And in this episode's Work of the Week, the artist Michael Armitage tells us about Sane Wadu's painting Black Moses (1993), a work in Wadu's retrospective at the Nairobi Contemporary Art Institute in Kenya, co-founded by Armitage, which opened last week.
