Can we trust news generated by AI tools? Bart Brouwers not only was journalist, he became an Editor in Chief of the news paper De Limburger, now he is professor of journalism in Groningen and is on the supervisor board of the Dutch public broadcaster NOS. We expected Bart to have a very skeptical attitude towards AI and to be a strong promotor of an all human process for creating news. But he also is an innovator, not afraid to explore himself how AI can make the process of gathering news faster, better and more efficient. So the created and launched a tool kit to support editorial teams. What makes a good journalist? Can AI compete or should AI complement? Can AI identify news worthy topics? Is AI a kind of reviewer, just like we know review processes in scientific publications. Can AI distinguish between trustworthy and fake news, among all the (mis) information in the reverberation hall called the internet, whether fake news is echoed all over by algorithms and exaggerated people making a living from influencing. And what does he think of the Dutch media landscape? should we have silos, columns, each with its own political, ethnic or religious flavor. We asked it to a member of the supervisory board of the NOS.
Dr. Lauren Parks Nicola, Chief Medical Officer at RevealDx, has extensive experience dealing with the challenges of accurately describing lung nodules and distinguishing between benign and malignant nodules based on visual inspection of CT scans. RevealDx software tool integrates into the radiologists' workflow and uses advanced algorithms and a large database of lung nodule data to provide a malignancy score for lung nodules. This technology can help reduce unnecessary follow-up scans and invasive procedures for patients with benign lung nodules while identifying high-risk ones requiring more aggressive investigation. Lauren explains, "Reveal's product is a software that characterizes lung nodules. So lung nodules, little blips on a lung that we find on a chest CT. And the thing is, they're very, very common. Lots of patients have them, they can turn out to be cancer, most of them aren't. But with the knowledge that we have right now, just as radiologists looking at those nodules, it's really hard to tell which ones are going to turn out to be cancerous and which ones aren't." "The software tool characterizes which nodules are more likely to be malignant and might need faster diagnosis, more aggressive workup, biopsy, some interventions, things that can help us diagnose cancer earlier when it's easier, less expensive, and much better for the patient to treat versus the ones that don't need that kind of care. And for a lot of patients, that means not needing follow-up scans, not needing biopsies, and not needing invasive treatments to prevent something that would never have been a problem for them in the first place. So it is that added information, as well as added clinical information, gives us and the patients tools to better predict how these are going to behave." #RevealDx #RadiologyAI #MedicalImaging #Radiology #LungCancer #DigitalHealth #ArtificialIntelligence #AI #AIinHealthcare #MedicalAI reveal-dx.com Download the transcript here

Can AI identify mosquito species? VectorCAM, a pocket-sized device, uses machine learning to differentiate species with 95% accuracy, enhancing malaria surveillance efforts Transcript Not all mosquitoes are created equal. Of the more than three thousand species, only a limited number of the Anopheles genus can transmit malaria. Even within that subset, subtle physiological differences affect how malaria spreads. Some mosquitoes prefer to bite indoors, while others outdoors. Some need large bodies of water to breed, while others only need a small puddle. Distinguishing these species is critical for effective malaria control—whether using bed nets, indoor spraying, or outdoor larval management. But identifying them by eye takes expert, entomological knowledge. Could AI help? The VectorCAM team at Johns Hopkins is working on just that. Their pocket-sized device uses a small light and magnifying lens, allowing a phone camera to capture close-up images of mosquitoes placed on slides. With up to 95% accuracy, it can identify mosquito species based on morphology in seconds. The hope is that VectorCAM will help health teams better understand mosquito populations, paving the way for more targeted and relevant malaria control efforts. Source Towards transforming malaria vector surveillance using VectorBrain: a novel convolutional neural network for mosquito species, sex, and abdomen status identifications (Scientific Reports) About The Podcast The Johns Hopkins Malaria Minute podcast is produced by the Johns Hopkins Malaria Research Institute to highlight impactful malaria research and to share it with the global community.

Anita argues that using such tools doesn't diminish critical thinking but can enhance productivity and efficiency. She discusses the importance of strategic tool use, differentiating struggle from strategy, and leveraging AI to elevate communication and visibility at work. Anita encourages listeners to reject the notion that struggle is necessary for credibility and to embrace AI as a means to elevate their thinking and leadership.

A groundbreaking AI application helped pull a hospice-bound patient back from the brink by identifying an unexpected treatment for a rare disease. By analyzing thousands of existing medications for potential side effects that could treat idiopathic multicentric Castleman's disease, researchers discovered a path to remission that human analysis might have missed. This remarkable story highlights AI's potential as a powerful medical tool when used to augment human expertise rather than replace it.Meanwhile, privacy concerns take center stage as 23andMe secures court approval to auction off customer DNA data despite growing protests. State attorneys general are warning consumers to delete their genetic information before the sale completes, raising fundamental questions about data ownership and personal privacy in our digital economy. Could this case establish a dangerous precedent for how companies handle our most sensitive biological information? The episode takes a fascinating detour with guest Elizabeth Bieniek, who shares insights from her journey developing WebEx Hologram at Cisco. Her book "Cake on Tuesday" offers 25 lessons for driving innovation within large corporations, distilling years of experience into practical advice for anyone looking to champion new ideas in established organizations. Biennik's approach to creating holographic collaboration technology demonstrates how visionary thinking can thrive even within corporate structures. We also explore Signal, the encrypted messaging app making headlines for its use by government officials. With features like automatic message deletion and capacity for 1,000-person group chats, this technology raises important questions about security protocols and information preservation within official channels. From life-saving AI applications to privacy threats, holographic meetings to secure messaging, this episode examines how technology continues to transform our world in both promising and concerning ways. President Donald Trump signed an executive order Thursday to consolidate the contracting of common goods and services, including information technology, under the General Services Administration. Within 30 days of the order's issuance, GSA will take over as the executive agent of all governmentwide acquisition contracts (GWACs) for IT, as designated by the Office of Management and Budget. “Consolidating domestic Federal procurement in the General Services Administration — the agency designed to conduct procurement — will eliminate waste and duplication, while enabling agencies to focus on their core mission of delivering the best possible services for the American people,” the order says. As part of GSA's new role, the administrator will be able to “defer or decline” being the executive agent of IT governmentwide contracts “when necessary to ensure continuity of service or as otherwise appropriate.” Other major GWACs for technology across the federal government include the National Institutes of Health Information Technology Acquisition and Assessment Center's vehicles like its CIO-SP3 and embattled CIO-SP4, as well as NASA's Solutions for Enterprise-Wide Procurement (SEWP) contracts. The General Services Administration on Thursday revealed a new generative AI tool designed to boost efficiency and help automate repetitive tasks. The platform, now available to GSA staff, comes amid anxiety that the Department of Government Efficiency might use artificial intelligence to surveil or replace federal workers, who are being laid off in large swaths across the government. The GSA chatbot can access a series of large language models, including technology from Anthropic and Meta. The system resembles other AI chatbots, and it's designed to respond to user prompts and help staff with basic tasks, like writing. Earlier this month, Wired first reported that the DOGE had deployed a chatbot called GSAi for 1,500 workers. According to Wired, the tool had been in development for several months, but DOGE accelerated the rollout of the platform and eventually wants to use it for data analysis of contracts and procurements. GSA said in a Thursday statement it is encouraging all of its staff to test the tool.
