He organised the first physical messages to space (the Pioneer plaque and the Voyager Golden Record), presented the hugely popular TV series Cosmos (1980), and considered humanity's long-term future in Pale Blue Dot (1994). He was also part of the team of researchers who first discovered the possibility of nuclear winter, and so became a leading voice of concern about the use of nuclear weapons. Sagan's words were often prescient and always poetic. In particular, I think he captures many ideas related to longtermism and existential risk as powerfully as anyone writing today. I've tried collecting some quotations that stand out to me from Sagan's work, though I've only read a minority of his published writing. You can find a slightly more comprehensive version here. Michael Nielsen has also written some fantastic 'working notes' on Cosmos. Cosmos: A Personal Voyage (1980) Note that Cosmos was co-written with Ann Druyan. Episode 1 — "The Shores of the Cosmic Ocean" The cosmos is all that is, or ever was, or ever will be. Our contemplations of the Cosmos stir us — there is a tingling in the spine, a catch in the voice, a faint sensation, as if a distant memory, of falling from a great height. We know we are approaching the greatest of mysteries. The size and age of the cosmos are beyond ordinary human understanding. Lost somewhere between immensity and eternity is our tiny planetary home, the Earth. For the first time we have the power to determine the fate of our planet, and ourselves. This is a time of great danger, but our species is young and curious and brave. It shows much promise. In the last few millennia we have made the most astonishing and unexpected discoveries about the cosmos, and our place within it. Salman Hameed, teacher, host, gung ho astronomer, founder, and contagiously curious intellectual, is the type of refreshing science professor we wish we'd had in undergrad. He joins AMP to talk about religion versus science, astrology, and aliens. As a Hampshire College professor of integrated science and humanities and director of the Center for the Study of Science in Muslim Societies, Salman has taught classes ranging from "History and Philosophy of Science and Religion” to "Aliens: Close Encounters of a Multidisciplinary Kind.” It all started with a surreptitious viewing of Carl Sagan's Cosmos: A Personal Voyage—which he mistook for science fiction at the time—and a prompt rejection of the traditional Pakistani path into medicine or engineering. (Admittedly we, too, were hooked by his description of how Cosmos compressed the history of the universe into one calendar year.) We delve into Salman's recent four-year National Science Foundation study on the reception of biological evolution in different Muslim communities. Just as Muslims are not a monolith, their responses were not monolithic. He explains how political, cultural, and social factors all influence one's stance, which surprisingly does not necessarily correlate to religiosity; sometimes a belief in evolution is even based on the Quran. Salman regales us with anecdotes about his American education, including his initial astonishment at how many students believed in UFOs and alien abductions (and just as alarming, creationism). Throughout his career he's been most interested in why people believe what they do rather than debunking theories. He speculates about the attraction to astrology and we learn of ancient cities having horoscopes based on their founding date. This leads to a take on psychics, how they get into your head, and what role they play in society. Naturally we revisit aliens; Asad asks for, and receives, an emphatic answer about whether there are advanced life forms out there (with a three-part clarification)! Salman also states his opinion of the life forms behind the recent Pentagon and New York Times reports on UFOs. We end with a starkly un-unique American Muslim experience, then a superbly unique one involving the chaotic calculation of the new moon to determine when Eid would fall in Long Island. Ann Druyan is a Peabody and Emmy-award winning writer, producer and director specializing in the communication of science. Druyan served for ten years as the elected Secretary of the Federation of American Scientists and was the Creative Director of NASA’s Voyager Interstellar Message and Program Director of the first solar sail deep space mission, launched on a Russian ICBM in 2005. She is perhaps most well-known for co-writing, with her late husband, Carl Sagan, the original 1980s, Emmy Award and Peabody Award-winning TV series “Cosmos: A Personal Voyage,” which currently holds the title of the most watched PBS series in television history. The duo also co-wrote six New York Times best-sellers, including Comet, Shadows of Forgotten Ancestors, The Demon Haunted World, Billions & Billions and The Varieties of Scientific Experience. Additionally, Druyan was co-creator and co-producer of the Warner Bros. feature film “Contact,” starring Jodie Foster. November 9th marks the anniversary of legendary astronomer Carl Sagan’s birth. Sagan was known for his wonderfully poetic way of explaining and transporting listeners into the history and complexities of the universe. He explored the mysteries of outer space in his landmark PBS program, “Cosmos: A Personal Voyage.” Monday is Mercury Transit Day: The planet Mercury will cross between Earth and the Sun. The transit starts at 7:36 am EST and ends at 1:04 pm. Those hoping to witness the transit must ensure they have proper eye protection. Alternatively, head to the Franklin Institute to watch through their telescopes. It happens about 13 times per century – and the next opportunity comes in the year 2032. It can’t happen on every orbit because Mercury’s orbit is tilted slightly from Earth’s. That means our orbits align only twice a year, so only during those times can Venus and Mercury be seen crossing the sun’s disk in transit. Sizing Up Dwarf Planets: Hygeia, which is only 270 miles (Philadelphia to Virginia Beach) in diameter, is now designated as the smallest dwarf planet discovered so far! Hygeia qualifies even though it’s so small because it apparently has enough mass to pull itself into a spherical shape.

The recently released Cosmos: A Spacetime Odyssey, released in 2014 which was hosted by the astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson; verses its predecessor, Cosmos: A Personal Voyage, released in 1980 which was hosted by the astrophysicist Carl Sagan.
