It only seems like yesterday that we were all gathered in Castle Buildings wondering if David Trimble was going to take the leap. He hadn't spoken to Sinn Féin at any time during the negotiations – except on one occasion when I said hello to him in the toilet and he told me to grow up. But on Friday 10 April 1998 he signed up to the Agreement.It was a defining moment in our recent history. It was a compromise between conflicting political positions. For the first time since partition the Agreement brought peace, stability and hope, and the opportunity for a better future for all the people of the island of Ireland. Terry ‘Cruncher O'NeillIt was the profound sadness that I heard on Sunday of the death of my friend and comrade Terry ‘Cruncher' O'Neill. Cruncher was an incomparable singer of Irish songs of resistance. The series stars Michelle Williams as Molly and Emmy nominated actor Jenny Slate as her friend Nikki. The show is based on a podcast of the same name by Nikki Boyer. Slate and the series co-creator, writer, and executive producer Kim Rosenstock discuss the series, which is streaming now on FX on Hulu.

Dying For Sex – created by Liz Meriwether and my guest today, Kim Rosenstock – is an adaptation of the popular Wondry podcast series of the same name about one Molly Kochan – a writer diagnosed with terminal cancer, who documents her sexual reawakening in the aftermath of that diagnosis. Played in the show by Michelle Williams, Molly leaves her husband and embarks on an odyssey of eroticism that forces her to confront a childhood trauma that has stalked her her entire adult life. Did I mention this is, at least in part, a comedy? At least, I laughed constantly throughout this series, which is tender and terrifically funny in equal measure, and well deserving of its Emmy nominations, including Outstanding Limited or Anthology Series and Outstanding Writing for a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie.In the spoiler conversation you're about to hear, Kim breaks down all the key scenes and characters from the show, getting into how, ironically, this is deep down a story about healing. We contemplate what it is about death that as a society we can't help but turn away from – and why we stand to benefit from staring it straight in the eye with our pop culture, rather than flinching away from the abyss it can resemble. You'll hear about why the show invented the neighbour character played by Rob Delaney in the series, as an act almost of wish fulfilment, giving Molly the chance to fall in love that she was denied in real life – and how working on this series affected Kim herself. Rosenstock talks about her background as a playwright, nearly missing out on the opportunity to write for the hit show New Girl, and navigating the complicated tone of Dying For Sex that balances a woman having unconventional, often hilarious sexual escapades with facing her own mortality.  “We need humor the most as human beings, so don't be afraid of injecting humor and joy and levity into these sort of subject matters… If you have the impulse to make it funny or to make it feel joyful or hopeful, lean into that and don't be afraid of it. I also think that is what makes it feel real, actually. To me, that makes it feel more honest, not the other way around… I think what's exciting is that audiences are embracing these kinds of stories that can kind of go into darker and lighter places at the same time,” says Rosenstock about mixing joy and sadness in Dying For Sex.  To hear more, listen to the podcast. Yael R Rosenstock Gonzalez is the founder of Kaleidoscope Vibrations, LLC, a company dedicated to supporting and creating spaces for individuals to explore and find community in their personal identities. As a queer, polyamorous, white-presenting Nuyorican Jew, Yael has always been interested in understanding the multi-level experiences of individuals. Through her company, she facilitates workshops, develops curriculum, offers Identity Exploration Coaching, and publishes narratives often left out of mainstream publishing. An upcoming publication is a coffee-table book representing the narratives and images from the photo-interview series, the Diverse Bodies Project, of which she is a founding member. Yael has been engaged in workshop development and facilitation since she joined the New York Civil Liberties Union (NYCLU) as a teen peer reproductive rights educator at 15 years old. Since then, she has served as an educator with children ranging from 10 months old to adults in their 70s with different organizations and communities. In her work as first Program Coordinator, then Director of Programming, and finally Associate Director of the Center for Ethnic, Racial, and Religious Understanding, Yael developed and led events, workshops, and programs with an intersectionality lens. Throughout Yael's career, there has been an emphasis on sex, gender, and diversity. Her undergraduate thesis, "A Not so Silent Voice for Female Sexuality: Empowering Examples from Literature Cross-Culturally" and Master's thesis, "Dismantling Rape Culture through an Exploration of Consent, Desire, and Pleasure," created space for her to explore sexuality, consent, and pleasure through different perspectives and disciplines.
