“I think when you're in a metropolis like this – a sprawl, so many people – it's easy to get lost and it's easy to forget who you are, and it's easy to feel insignificant. And I felt like DEUCE became this little flower that pops up on the sidewalk between the cracks. Where it felt like, okay, I belong here. This is my little corner of the world, of LA, of Venice.” Tim Brown, ladies and gentleman. One of the original members of DEUCE Gym, it is with great excitement that I'd like to share with you the latest episode of the DEUCE Racing Podcast, featuring Tim! Tim is the type of person that makes the yard more comfortable, just by being in it. And, much like with his incredibly impressive, decorated career in journalism, after listening to this episode, you'll better understand and appreciate how the charm that surrounds Tim wherever he is is no coincidence. Not only that, but it's accessible to you too.. Warmly inviting you to listen to Episode 16 with this one-of-a-kind man, myth, and legend.
Chef, restaurant owner, 10-year Program Director & Instructor of The Culinary Training Program at St. Joseph's Center - a remarkable non-profit right down the street from DEUCE Gym in Venice, Ironman triathlete, Chopped winner, (folks... the list goes on!) student of DEUCE since 2014, and forever a student life, LA native Derek Walker lives a fascinating, richly diverse and decorated, constantly evolving life. Short and sweet, here's what makes this conversation with Derek exceptional: the juxtaposition in perspective from an individual who has been and continues to be deeply committed to embracing opportunity (and all the obstacles that come with it) throughout his entire life, as well as open-minded enough during the darkest depths of any meaningful pursuit to step back and honor taking a break from passion when needed. Very much a "yes" man to maximizing all that life has to offer, Derek looks at any challenge with this approach: "I don't look at it as a burden. I look at it as an opportunity." This is kind of the conversation you'll listen to and walk away reminded that anything is possible! As always, we invite you to tune in HERE, like, subscribe, and share with everyone you know.
Episode 4 addresses that which binds us: adversity. Logan offers that we all experience adversity, but some people are better at it that others. Could pursuing your peak expression make you more fit for unknowable life struggles?Listeners will hear from Hollywood's hottest new director, Tyler Nilson, as well as Chef Antonia Lofaso and photographer Vava Ribiero. This episode not only features the unexpected troubles sustainable toothbrush company founder, Christina Ramirez, had to overcome when her first batch of product had to be trashed, you'll also hear never before heard audio recordings from Logan Gelbrich as he and his DEUCE Gym team navigated the most challenging moment in the history of the fitness business. Thank you for choosing leadership and enjoy the show. Text HTSPOD to 855-909-1350 for supporting materials.
We love Ben Smith. Not only is Ben a beloved GPP Coach at both DEUCE Gym in Venice and DEUCE Backlot in Hollywood, he's also the Head Coach of three DEUCE Specialty courses – Nutrition, DELTA BRAVO, and Bodybuilding. And while you might already know a bit about Ben's background in the military, or how he came to find DEUCE, you've likely never heard him tell the story about sending DEUCE Founder, Logan Gelbrich, a DM from a porta potty somewhere in Germany... or how (and why) he came to learn about strength & conditioning… or heard him speak about embodiment, and how a greater understanding of somatic processing has contributed to a richer, much more expansive perspective on things like commitment & manifestation. Ben Smith doesn't just get the job done with everything that he does, he unequivocally lives it. And, in the way he understands that strength & conditioning training can grow one's capacity, Ben applies that same mentality to growing his capacity in all other expressions of life. As Ben puts it, while being successful in one field doesn't guarantee success elsewhere, it does teach you that you can do hard things, and stay in it – regardless of what the outcome is. In this way, “Success is a function of consistency.” On this week's DEUCE Racing Podcast episode, I'm beyond excited to share with all of you a conversation that will surely inspire! You know the drill by now… tune in HERE, like, subscribe, write a review, and please share! Cheers to spreading the goodness.
Ben Smith, Army veteran, coach at the legendary Deuce Gym in Los Angeles, and top three finalist on season 16 of The Bachelorette, encourages anyone going through a life-changing transition period—service members in particular—to actively seek guidance, whether through workshops, support groups, or connecting with a mentor who has been in their shoes and successfully crossed the bridge. In today’s conversation, Ben sheds some light on his mental health struggles before and after his time in the military, including an eating disorder that plagued his days in the Army due to an overwhelming feeling that he had no control over his own life. He also shares two moments in particular when he was gripped by thoughts of suicide and what allowed him to soldier on down a path of healing. Tune in to learn some of Ben's favorite practices for improving your own mental health today and how to live an others-centered life. Logan Gelbrich, author of Going Right: A Logical Justification for Pursuing Your Dreams, owns Deuce gyms in LA, a unique group of gyms that teaches leadership and a higher standard of performance in a gym environment incorporating strength training, strongman, gymnastics, wellness, fitness, performance and group fitness. His book is a great metaphor if you want to grow, hold higher standards, make a mark and be uncommon. It is a philosophical journey, a logical justification to chase our dreams. How does Logan see the paradox of life? How would I know I have gone right and achieved my peak expression? Are there sign posts? Why do we find it so hard to commit to something, to go chips in? Logan has a morbid attraction to adversity. When did this start? Plato to Aristotle "the first and best victory is to conquer self." What has Logan not conquered about himself? How to take agency over our story? What's our most empowering default inner dialogue, our inner voice, when Going Right? Is it hard to hold the standard when everyone is looking to him as the Going Right guy? An important question to ask is what are you becoming. What is Logan becoming? What's Logan's superpower? Logan's parents created a home environment where he believed he could do anything. Why did he believe that was actually true? Some people think they only have two choices in life- Door #1 or Door #2. But what if this linear thinking has held us back our entire lives and is preventing us from growing and evolving? Welcome to The Darin Olien Show. On this podcast, you’ll hear me, Darin Olien, “the superfood hunter,” have inspiring and enlightening conversations with extraordinary people from all walks of life. Although our ideas and approaches to life may differ, our ultimate goal is the same- to save the planet one conversation at a time. If you’re interested in expanding your view of the world by learning new perspectives on health, nutrition and healing the planet, and want to learn more about society’s Fatal Conveniences™- the things we may be doing because the world we live in makes us believe we have to, even though they may be doing harm- then this is the podcast for you. This episode features my buddy Logan Gelbrich. Logan is the founder of DEUCE Gym, which has several locations in California. DEUCE features old school training equipment like boulders, weights, and things right out of a Strongman competition. They’re unlike any gyms I’ve ever been to before and became my workout home after I lost my Malibu home to the fires. Logan is also the author of the amazing book Going Right: A Logical Justification for Pursuing Your Dreams. And let me tell you guys, this book is a mind opener. It explores the myth we’ve been fed our whole lives about only having two options in life, pursue your dream or take the safe route. It will shatter your thoughts on this kind of thinking, believe me. In this episode, Logan and I get into some deep stuff and some amazing stories of his baseball days playing for the University of San Diego and professionally for the San Diego Padres. We discuss how we both have always taken the path less traveled as far as pursuing our dreams in life, and what that means for our personal growth. This conversation was a good one, guys, and I can’t wait for you to hear it. Other bits from our conversation: Why there is never just two choices Why doing the hard thing leads to personal growth Why pursuing your dreams is never reckless What it means to find the flow Logan’s movie-worthy baseball story My story of almost being in a plane crash Why Logan designed DEUCE the way he did Power vs. Force This episode’s Fatal Convenience™: Electromagnetic Fields (EMFs) Links: Going Right: A Logical Justification for Pursuing Your Dreams DUECE Gym Logan on Twitter Logan on Instagram Download Darin’s amazing new lifestyle app and get 3 days free at 121Tribe.com Barukas Nuts 15% discount with code “DARIN” The Darin Olien Show is produced by the team at Must Amplify. In this episode I discuss the current climate of change we are living through due to the COVID-19 Pandemic. After a few weeks of waking up to messages from concerned health and fitness practitioners, it became clear that struggle was in the air and we were entering a state of transition. So I decided to take to social media to ask some questions, make some calls, and in a semi-live fashion report what a few health and fitness leaders have been dealing with and experienced over the last few days as Italy went on lockdown, Spain followed suit, and now the USA is next in line and bracing for impact. In this episode I feature: Kitcho Evangelidis - Founder and Owner of Oviedo Strength and Garaje Strength in Oviedo, Spain. Angel Orozco - Founder and Owner of Telegraph CrossFit in San Francisco, CA. This weeks podcast is with Kimmy Moss who is one of the team at Deuce Gym, founder of Breath & Exposure and a kindred spirit for her love of the ice bath and what it does for anyone who steps in and goes inside. We met Kimmy like many of our LA friends through Carl Paoli when he hosted his new seminar the Freestyle Insider in London back in early 2019. Shared ideas and a connection over soccer, for Chris and Kimmy at least led us to want to sit down with Kimmy when we were back in LA and hit record. We talk about her transition from the soccer field to the position of coach and how this has created within her a definite ability to support her athletes to realise something more within themselves, the hidden potential that lies deep beneath the layers of our conditioning and what we think we can do. That idea is something Chris and I believe greatly in and that is also the challenge that we all face to realise the potential inside, the challenge being peeling back those layers that we add over time. And this is where the ice comes in for Kimmy who dabbled with the sports ice bath during her soccer years and then evolved into her coming under the wing of Laird Hamilton and Gabbi Reece with the XPT Fitness protocol which places a great emphasis on longevity and adaptation. Kimmy has now evolved her own method and playbook for how breath work and exposure (both hot and cold) can create strides in our ability to adapt and respond to increasing stress be it performance or life. Love her style, its crisp and clear and holds the athlete in their highest with a hint of eye contact when they feel like backing off from what they can achieve. Who would have thought getting in ice baths would have such a profound effect on the psyche and physiology. It's something that is for anyone but might not be for everyone. It takes curiosity to seek whats on the other side of discomfort. If you are curious give it a go, find the groups who do it and share in the experience for yourself.

Hey there and welcome to this weeks weMove podcast and this is the second podcast from our 2019 US trip. For those new to listening our intention with the podcast and the publications is to inspire and nurture through movement but more often than not we realise that movement is just a tool to strip away the layers of our identity in order to get to our true potential. This episode started off in the movement space with our friendship with one of the guests that has led on to a deeper understanding of what he is building in the physical culture space with his growing number of gyms, strengthening culture and thriving community, and more importantly the principles behind it. Because the principles enable us to go beyond what we thought was possible, and going beyond rarely goes in the way we have been told to expect it and what we talk about in this episode is no different. In San Diego we sat down on the comfy seats of Cara Millers office with Logan Gelbrich to talk why constructive criticism won't move the needle and seeking the parts of us that lets us down and working on them will, shining a light on our weaknesses and those of others in our team in an open and supportive culture to accelerate us towards our goals. Logan Gelbrich is founder of Deuce Gym and Cara Miller, developmental coach, organisational consultant and leadership designer has worked with Logan since Deuce was an idea creating a culture which is way more than a gym, it is a community and culture sitting smack bang in the middle of performance, community lifestyle intersection. This is about how there is so much more growth to be gained by closing the gap on something you are not good at rather than how much growth you can gain by incremental gains on something you are already good at. It pays to focus on the thing that gives you consistent growth and development. The caveat being Honesty, radical transparency and commitment are non negotiable. There are layers in this and a myriad of connections to other episodes, most notably the Jami Tikkanen episode. Enjoy, share, spread the word and thanks for listening.

Lacey Fema and Kimmy Moss are coaches at DEUCE Gym among other titles and I was thrilled that they decided to take the BIRTHFIT Coach Seminar for a number of reasons but specifically because neither of them have children nor would they have desribed themselves as being "feminine" before exploring everything that the seminar has to offer. They talk about how BIRTHFIT really is for everyone, including themselves, and how the seminar impacted them both professionally and personally.
Kimmy Moss is a Breath & Exposure Coach based out of Deuce Gym in Venice, California. You can find her on Instagram @kimmy.moss and @rhetoricinmotionSupport the show
In this episode, we take a deep dive into breathing techniques, cold exposure and heat exposure. While new health and fitness trends are always popping up, we’re taking it back to the basics with our guest, Kimmy Moss. Kimmy is a coach and leads the Breath & Exposure program at Deuce Gym. “You can go weeks without eating food, days without drinking water but how many minutes can you go without breathing?” - Kimmy Moss. Kimmy really challenges us to think about something we haven’t paid much attention to on the regular: our breathing patterns. Kimmy is also a huge advocate for cold exposure. From her college soccer years, she had naturally been drawn to the benefits of incorporating cold body dunks into her routine. Now as an XPT Level 3 Certified Coach, she teaches students how to conquer their fears of the ice bath using breath as a tool to get their bodies and minds through the stress of cold exposure. In this episode you’ll learn: The power of nasal breathing How to increase your CO2 tolerance How to downregulate (transition to parasympathetic mode) How to upregulate / energize yourself with your breath The importance of breathing into your diaphragm/belly A primal breathing technique The benefits of cold exposure The roots of hold/cold exposure The benefits of heat exposure Infrared sauna vs. dry sauna Resources: Connect with Kimmy Moss: @Kimmy.Moss
Kimmy is out of Deuce Gym in Los Angeles, California. She is XPT certified teaching breath work and heat and ice training. Kimmy was formerly a Division 1 soccer and track & field athlete at George Mason University.
There are a lot of conversations these days around really taking hold of the narrative of your life, and not just passively reacting to life but actively responding to who you are created to be, what you're called to, and what you're capable of becoming – and I am all for it! So, today, I want to add on to this conversation that society is having through my conversation with Logan Gelbrich, a man who has not just asked himself these questions but embodies his answers to them. Logan is a former professional baseball player for the San Diego Padres, a “Functional Coach” working with DEUCE Gym, and the author of Going Right: A Logical Justification for Pursuing Your Dreams. Logan was lucky enough to know that he wanted to be a baseball player from a very young age, and he had the drive to make it happen – but, unfortunately, professional sports careers often don't have a very long lifespan. So, after Logan's professional baseball career was over, he had to ask himself all of those questions again. Luckily, baseball taught Logan to orient towards that which is in his control. So, instead of wallowing in a decision he couldn't change, he focused on what he could do moving forward. Finding our next best next step in life requires identifying what's at the intersection of our curiosity and commitment, and in Logan's book, he takes an objective and utilitarian view on this subject. He urges readers to ask themselves, “How are you most useful to yourself and your community?” What doesn't work, he says, is just picking what you're going to do next arbitrarily. You can't stay committed to an idea you just picked out of a hat, or because it was trending on Google. You probably can, however, stay committed to an idea or organization that has captured your curiosity and lit you up in the past. And through that commitment and curiosity, you can pursue a life where you are always pushing yourself to the edge of what you are capable of and constantly evolving. But Logan says that a lot of us are intentionally avoiding difficulty, and as a result, we are losing ourselves along the way. The path most travelled is covered in complacency, so I urge you to choose the path less travelled; a path packed with curiosity, challenge, and growth. -- Don't be a podcast junkie… Resources: Learn more at http://holdthestandard.com/ (http://holdthestandard.com) Read: Going Right: A Logical Justification for Pursuing Your Dreams Instagram: instagram.com/functionalcoach/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/Logan-Gelbrich-1867808216814552/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/FunctionalCoach Hold the Standard Summit: https://prep.deucegym.com/courses/category/Seminars -- We are brought to you by the Lawton Marketing Group, a full-service advertising and design agency serving companies and entrepreneurs at all levels.
