An increased emphasis on public safety and a renewed focus on the pension plan are top priorities for the Columbia Police Officers Association (CPOA). CPOA president Matt Nichols joined host Fred Parry in-studio for the hour Saturday morning on 939 the Eagle's “CEO Roundtable” program. Mr. Nichols describes CPOA as the voice for the men and women who serve the Columbia Police Department, who decide to join CPOA. The organization has about 145 members, and President Nichols says they have about 99 percent of membership of those who are sergeants and below. Mr. Nichols tells Fred Parry that turnover at the Columbia Police Department has been about 71 percent since 2012, since changes were made to pension plans. He tells listeners that the restoration of the pension plan will help with CPD retention. Mr. Nichols also wants to see more funding for police and for public safety, saying more and more city dollars are being spent on social programs. Matt Nichols was born and raised in Columbia and was a “Boone baby”, which means he was born at Boone Hospital Center. Dr. Bob McDavid, who later served as mayor, delivered him. Mr. Nichols graduated from Hickman high school and served as a police cadet at one time. He's also worked for the Hallsville and Ashland police departments. He's also worked in the public sector, for Home Depot, Lowe's and as a carpenter. Mr. Nichols worked at numerous stores for Lowe's for almost a decade before he started as CPD. Mr. Nichols serves as a detective for the Columbia Police Department. As Fred Parry emphasized in this one-hour interview, Mr. Nichols is representing CPOA during this interview and is not speaking for the Columbia Police Department:

Mr. Nichols also says Murphy can help attract and retain the best and brightest to serve CPD:

The Columbia Police Officers Association (CPOA) doesn't mince words about the crime Columbia is seeing, saying criminals are becoming more emboldened. CPOA is warning about lawlessness, saying shootings occur on our streets almost daily and that there have been gang shootouts as well. CPOA president Matt Nichols joined us live on 939 the Eagle's "Wake Up Mid-Missouri," telling listeners that for the first time ever, CPOA has made endorsements in Boone County commission races. CPOA is endorsing GOP challengers Sam Turner and State Rep. Cheri Toalson Reisch (R-Hallsville) in their races against Boone County Commissioners Justin Aldred and Janet Thompson. Commissioners Aldred and Thompson are Democrats. Mr. Nichols tells listeners that neither Aldred nor Thompson have ever contacted CPOA to express support for public safety. He says CPOA believes Mr. Turner and Representative Toalson Reisch will support public safety for all of the Boone County community. He notes the whole of Columbia is in Boone County. Nichols also criticized Columbia activist December Harmon during the live interview:

The Columbia Police Officers Association (CPOA) is warning about what they describe as rampant lawlessness and rampant violence in the city. We saw two high-profile crimes on Sunday and Monday. Missouri's Probation and Parole Board is expected to revoke the parole of the suspect who allegedly led numerous law enforcement officers on Monday morning's high-speed pursuit across Columbia and Boone County. The pursuit ended when the suspect crashed into a Boone County Sheriff's vehicle near Memorial Stadium. The deputy was not injured. 46-year-old Rickey Ross Deford of mid-Missouri's Huntsville is a parolee with a lengthy criminal record. And a weekend Columbia shooting suspect remains jailed without bond this morning, after being charged with three felonies. Boone County prosecutors have charged 21-year-old Kadean Cunningham with first degree assault, armed criminal action and domestic assault for the shooting that happened on Jacobs place, near Highway 63 and Broadway. Columbia Police say the victim suffered non-life threatening injuries. Court documents allege that Cunningham pistol-whipped the male victim and also shot him in the thigh. Cunningham is also accused of head-butting a woman and choking her, causing the victim to vomit. CPOA executive director Matt Nichols joined us live on 939 the Eagle's "Wake Up Mid-Missouri", telling listeners that enough is enough. He says criminals aren't afraid of the police anymore. Nichols also says the CPOA is looking for a pro-law enforcement candidate to challenge Columbia Mayor Barbara Buffaloe in April:

Columbia Police are holding four additional meetings today for you to learn details about CPD's plans to use the Flock Safety camera system. Columbia Police hope to purchase and implement automatic license plate readers (ALPRs) in the city. CPD has drafted a policy on the appropriate uses of the camera system, and they outlined that policy at four separate meetings yesterday. Columbia Police Officers Association (CPOA) president Matt Nichols joined us live on 939 the Eagle's "Wake Up Mid-Missouri", telling listeners that Flock has been in Columbia and Boone County for years. CPD says the cameras would provide real-time alerts to law enforcement when they detect stolen vehicles or suspect vehicles listed in local, state or national crime databases. Mr. Nichols tells listeners that Jefferson City Police use Flock, as do the Callaway and Cooper County Sheriff's departments. He says they are used for almost every investigation because criminals use vehicles when they commit violent crimes, rather than walk or ride the bus. There has been concerns raised by some progressives and some conservatives about the plan, with some progressives worrying the cameras could be used to track transgender residents or follow residents who have an abortion. Mr. Nichols tells listeners there is no possibility of that happening now or in the future. CPD is holding four additional meetings today. The first one was this morning at the Crossing church. The others are: ** Noon in the Columbia city council chambers ** 3 pm at Gentry middle school on Bethel ** 7 pm at Boone Electric's community room on Rangeline.

The Columbia Police Officers Association (CPOA) says staffing shortages and increased violent crime are plaguing officers in the department. The CPOA has issued a Facebook post, which says 2024 is on pace to be the most violent year on record in Columbia. CPOA executive director Matt Nichols joined us live on 939 the Eagle's "Wake Up Mid-Missouri". He tells listeners that Columbia has seen ten homicides thus far in 2024, adding that the record number is 15 that was set in 2019. The city has seen four homicides in the past month. That includes two women being shot to death and dumped in a closet, the deadly gun battle in White Castle's parking lot and an 18-year-old male being shot to death on Rice road. The CPOA says a number of the SWAT team members that responded to Thursday's deadly standoff at the Links apartments on Clark lane came in during their time off. The CPOA's Nichols tells listeners that CPD officers are exhausted, and he says Columbia could use a full-time SWAT team. A Columbia city council member was recalled from office last night for the first time in almost 34 years. First ward councilman Nick Knoth lost his recall race on Tuesday 531-394. Mr. Knoth was elected to Columbia's city council in April 2023 and since has taken a job with the Missouri Realtors. Recall organizers in the first ward say Knoth's job as a lobbyist with the Missouri Realtors was a conflict of interest with his elected position. But Councilman Knoth disputed that, as does the Columbia Police Officers Association (CPOA). CPOA president Matt Nichols joined us live on 939 the Eagle's "Wake Up Mid-Missouri", telling listeners that Knoth was targeted by those who wants to abolish the police, adding that the first ward is riddled with crime. Nichols is upset that Councilman Knoth was recalled. Nichols is also praising the election of second ward Columbia councilman Lisa Meyer. Mr. Nichols discusses CPD's delayed crash report protocol and also weighed in on efforts to recall Columbia first ward councilman Nick Knoth. It's been 33 years since a Columbia city council member was recalled. Recall organizers say Knoth's job as a lobbyist with the Missouri Realtors is a conflict of interest with his elected position. The Columbia Police Department is currently 41 officers short, according to CPD assistant chief Jeremiah Hunter. Columbia Police Officers Association (CPOA) president Matt Nichols is concerned about that number and about staffing levels. Mr. Nichols joined us live on 939 the Eagle's "Wake Up Mid-Missouri" this morning, telling listeners that one detective left the department because of the way the community is leaning. Mr. Nichols and CPOA are also disappointed because Columbia's city council has not allocated any federal American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) dollars as premium/hazard pay for law enforcement officers and other essential workers who were unable to work from home during the COVID pandemic. Mr. Nichols tells listeners that one-time money would help retain Columbia Police officers, as well as bus drivers and garbage collectors. Mayor Barbara Buffaloe has noted Columbia's city council approved a fiscal year 2024 budget in September that saw an across-the-board increase in pay, and an increase in starting salary for police officers. While Mr. Nichols acknowledges those two points, he says inflation has eaten a lot of that raise:

I love hearing success stories, don't you? I'm especially fascinated by fast-growing recruitment companies. Alex Zoboli and Matt Nichols have a track record of successfully building teams and creating rapid growth.  In our conversation, you will hear them share the success factors that enabled them to grow a recruitment business from 50 to 200 staff in just four years.   They also shared how they started their business during the pandemic and scaled up to 40 people in 18 months. We discussed a number of critical components in building your business for growth, such as goal setting, hiring, internal growth, and teaching moments from mistakes and failures. Alex and Matt are the founders of Cornerstone Recruitment Japan. Cornerstone is focused on placing bi-lingual professionals in a wide range of market-leading companies across all sectors. They are one of the fastest growing recruitment companies in Japan with a team of 40 and the only recruitment firm with backing from a major investment bank in Tokyo. Prior to founding Cornerstone Recruitment Japan, they were Directors with RGF Professional Recruitment Japan for four years. Episode Outline and Highlights [1:15] Alex & Matt shared how and why they launched their business in Japan. [5:22] The second biggest recruitment market in the world: what is recruiting like in Japan? [12:30] Scaling a business from 50 to 200 in 4 years - what are the three critical success factors?  [16:40] Hiring their first 50 - how Alex & Matt persuaded good talents to jump onboard. [21:27] Adding value to inexperienced and experienced recruiters and attracting great recruiters to your business. [32:18] How to know if a newly hired team member will be successful? Hear Alex & Matt's viewpoints. [34:40] Why go for a team player instead of a ‘lone wolf' achiever? [41:00] Laying out a career path for your team. [45:20] Teaching moments - sharing of mistakes and learnings when hiring people. Scaling From 50 to 200 in Four Years After sharing what motivated them to launch their business in Japan, I asked Alex and Matt on the critical success factors when scaling a business. They are pretty much specialists when growing a recruitment business - with a proven track record of having grown a previous business from 50 to 200 staff in four years!  Matt said, “For me the key is you gotta set the goal of what you want to achieve for the business really early, and you really got to commit to it. It's got to stay part of the fabric of the business every single step of the way.” Matt added, “The other thing for me also is, your first 50 people are absolutely crucial if you're gonna scale a big business. Your first 50 people should contain most of your future senior leadership team.”  Alex shared a third factor, “I think in general you have to have the ambition to do it. I think not everybody wants to have a big business. Having a big business and scaling in a short period of time is extremely stressful and a lot of hard work… You're doing it really because you really want to do it. I think that is our success factor. The fact that we just really want to do it, that's it.” My takeaway is that they went into scaling their business by having a very specific vision that they want to achieve from day one. Knowing that it is going to be challenging, stressful and difficult, for Alex and Matt it is entirely deciding that they want to make that commitment and make it happen.  Establishing the Dynamics and Finding the Team Player  When growing your business, it is important to establish the dynamics of your team. Part of choosing a talent is to not only consider their performance but rather how he or she can affect the entire dynamics with the tenured members. You would want people who are ambitious and want to achieve and those who want to be team players, but those two don't always go hand in hand. So, I asked Matt and Alex on how they would usually deal with this element. Matt explained, “We would avoid the lone wolf type of person. They are pretty easy to spot… Some of the top billers from a competitor, they're not a team player at all and those are lone wolves. We're not interested, we can do without the billing basically.”  Matt and Alex mentioned some of the characteristics of who they would consider as team players: Those who are not afraid to share leads Those who are happy when their colleagues do well Those who realize that they increase their chances of individually succeeding by working as a team. In line with the above, Matt further elaborates on the characteristics of a smooth, functional and high-performing team.  Alex Zoboli & Matt Nicholls Bio and Contact Info  Alex and Matt are the founders of Cornerstone Recruitment Japan, the only recruitment firm with backing from a major investment bank in Tokyo and the fastest growing recruitment company in Japan. Churches and Christians have taken many hits over the last few years. From scandals, accusations of misusing church resources, and so many other church failures to having a culture that seems to be doing its best to silence Christians in the public space, it seems that the church is starting to lose its ability to impact the culture around them. We know that this shouldn't be the case, but in a world that seems so "anti God," how are we supposed to bring the Good News of Jesus to them?   In this episode of RTC, Marc and Fuller had the opportunity to sit down with Pastor Matt Nichols of Soul Harvest Church in Cloverdale, IN to talk about how both he and his church are reaching people both in their community and beyond. In this episode, Pastor Matt shares both personal stories and ministry stories of people's lives begin transformed because of Jesus, but he also breaks down how every day Christians can have the exact same impact in their local community.   //Other Episodes That You May Enjoy// 085: Focus: Why am I a Christian?: https://realtalkchristianpodcast.com/episodes/085-focus-why-am-i-a-christian/   074: How to Raise Christian Kids with Ryan Coatney of Cross Formed Kids: https://realtalkchristianpodcast.com/episodes/074-how-to-raise-christian-kids-with-ryan-coatney-of-cross-formed-kids/   053: A Christian’s Response
