If you have ever felt like something is off in your gut and nobody has been able to explain why, this episode is for you. On this episode of the Medical Disruptor, I sit down with Dr. Supriya Rao, a quadruple board certified gastroenterologist, to talk about what chronic gut symptoms are actually telling you, why the gut-brain connection is one of the most undertreated areas in medicine today, and what it looks like when a doctor goes beyond the standard workup to find real answers. We cover the truth about IBS, how hormones affect gut health in ways most people never get told, where GLP-1s actually fit into the picture, and the one question Dr. Rao says almost no patient ever thinks to ask. Your gut has been trying to tell you something. It's time to listen. Want more practical health tips? Send us Fan MailDo you avoid the topic of colon cancer? So do we. Let's tackle it together.Better yet - watch this episode on YouTube here: HEREDanielle mentioned that the things we are avoiding talking about are often the things we should really be bringing into the light and taking action with. So let's do it together. It is Colon Cancer Awareness month after all. Are there any colon cancer symptoms we should be looking out for? If you have any changes like bleeding or changes in symptoms - it's important to reach out to your gastroenterology team. Many people are curious about what colon cancer symptoms to look out for, however it's important to not that many people do not have classic symptoms. So if you are at risk, be sure to get regular colonoscopies and talk with your Gastroenterologist.Even if you don't have changes or colon cancer symptoms, new guidelines suggest people as young as 45 may need to be screened. If you've got IBD, you'll likely be receiving colonoscopies every 2-3 years or sooner if you are more at risk. It's a touchy subject for me and many with IBD who live with additional risk - so I won't share all the stats with you on why you want to prevent it. I know like me, you probably already know them. But here is how we are reducing our risk:⭐Regular Colonoscopies - THE best way to prevent it and get it early. Get them every 2 years after 10 years of diagnosis or sooner if your GI suggests it.⭐Check your nutrients! Vitamin D, folate, B12 - book a call with us and we can run them for you. ⭐Get Color & Fiber in the Diet - Eat the RAINBOW® and include fiber. ⭐Start with easy to tolerate varieties like soluble fibers like B2B which includes easy to tolerate prebiotic fiber acacia along with L.plantarum 299v to help reduce bloating and pain. Don't forget to ease into whatever you try!

You've worked and saved your whole career to have the best retirement possible. Now that you are close to retirement, what actually needs to change? Nate Reineke and Chelsea Jones answer questions from physicians like you, breaking down exactly that. A Gastroenterologist in Washington asks, “As I get closer to retirement, I'm realizing that spending down my investments is very different from building them up. What are the most important things to focus on with retirement right around the corner?” A Neurosurgeon in New York says, “If I am at the top marginal tax bracket now and intend on spending enough in retirement that we keep me at the highest tax bracket then, should I still contribute to a pre-tax 401k?” An Anesthesiologist in California wonders, “When should I take Social Security? I have always assumed age 70, but are there benefits of taking it earlier?” A Dermatologist in Texas asks, “What if we put most of our money in stocks but just keep a few years of cash on the side so we don't have to sell when the market is down? Does that actually make things safer?” Are you ready to turn worries about taxes and investing into all the money you need for college and retirement? It's time to make a plan and get on track. The Net Promoter System Podcast – Customer Experience Insights from Loyalty Leaders

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 21, 2025 20:54

Episode 255: One of healthcare's biggest blind spots? When patients turn 18. It's the moment they age out of pediatrics and fall headfirst into a system designed to prioritize older, sicker adults. Physicians, stretched thin, reserve energy for complex cases, giving young adults shorter visits and less attention. That means early signs of medical trouble, like anxiety or preventive needs, go missed. Jason Guardino and Karen San, care experience experts at The Permanente Medical Group, are addressing this massive and often invisible problem head-on. The Permanente Medical Group found that younger patients in their twenties and thirties consistently gave lower satisfaction scores than both pediatric and senior patients.  “They didn't feel listened to and they felt dismissed,” Jason says. “They felt like there was a lack of compassion during that [medical] visit.” That sentiment, combined with rising anxiety, digital misinformation from things like social media, and a national shortage of mental health professionals, creates a high-stakes problem few health systems are equipped to solve. When doctors unintentionally triage young adults as low risk, this puts younger patients' health at risk, “If you don't slow down and focus on providing a great experience, you can miss something that could be potentially very dangerous for this patient,” Jason explains. Fixing this gap means rethinking how we treat both patients and providers, from doctors to nurses to clinicians. To drive change, The Permanente Medical Group is listening—literally. Through live feedback tools and real-time digital prompts, they're surfacing patient pain points. That data is changing how care teams engage with young adults and helping leaders understand the double bind facing providers: everyone needs high quality care, despite limited time and resources. There's an opportunity to strengthen our care delivery model to meet those expectations and the ever-changing patient expectations.” 00:00:07 “If you don't slow down and focus on providing a great experience, you can miss something that could be potentially very dangerous for this patient. Even if they're in the minority, I always say, if something happens a few percent of the time, somebody has to be in that small percentage of time—that [means] an injury can happen.” 00:00:08 “The system stressors disproportionately affect our younger members because the providers are using this as a kind of survival tactic. They're saving their energy for the more complex patients with more comorbidities. And so it's not affecting our older population the same way it is our younger.” 00:00:09 “We have found that the younger population [does] have heightened anxiety. And that's fueled by a number of things. Covid-19 affected their perception of health. Social media is affecting how they define what good looks like. And so they're looking to primary care providers, who may not be experts in mental healthcare, to provide that mental healthcare. And that also creates a friction point that we need to solve for.” 00:00:11 “We did a pilot of 5 of our 21 medical centers for several months. And then, in December of 2023, we launched it throughout the entire medical group—so, 21 medical centers and all of our patients. So we're about a year and four months into this, and right now, we're sitting at about 2.5 million results. We have about 1.5 million—what we call 'caring moments'—[where] patients write about their clinicians and the staff. And as we say, it's an expression of gratitude, appreciation, and love—like something we've never had before.” Resources Check out Episode 197 of Customer Confidential, where we interviewed Jason Guardino back in 2022 on the importance of compassion in healthcare: https://www.netpromotersystem.com/insights/compassion-in-healthcare-podcast/

With the rise of ChatGPT and as end-of-term rolls around, many parents are questioning how much of that glowing paragraph about resilience and curiosity was actually penned by a human. Joining us is Zaineb Mahdi, Cluster Lead for Digital Technology and Innovation at GEMS Education, to talk AI, authenticity, and what the future of school feedback might look like. We’re also exploring the rise of the ‘good‑enough job’ with career guidance practitioner Shazia Bharuchi, why it works for some, when it becomes a trap for others, and how to know if it’s serving your goals or silently stalling your growth. Is it true that cheese gives you nightmares? And are we all a little bit dairy intolerant whether we know it or not? From bloating to bedtime bellyaches, we’re tackling the gut-related myths doing the rounds online with Dr. Mazin Rasool Aljabiri, Consultant Physician and Gastroenterologist at Mediclinic. I sit down with Dr Timothy Yen, Gastroenterologist and Clinical Informaticist at Loma Linda University.  Dr Yen was building the Lynch Syndrome program at Loma Linda when he discovered Epic Cosmos, where the Epic's Care Everywhere could be used for research, regardless of the health system.  Epic Cosmos unlike other modules, isn't built around claims data.  Now Dr Yen can pull de-identified data from thousands of patients, aggregate statistics and more.  Cosmos is free for a health system to join, but they just need Care Everywhere.   It also has a system to potentially connect lynch syndrome providers without breaking any privacy issues.  Biggest barrier is going through the training and understanding how it works in order to do anything meaningful.  As patients, we need to remind our physician offices to be specific in documenting our visits.
