From Chronic Pain to Passion
Ep 39 Permission to Be Human, with Mind-Body Coach Deb Malkin

From Chronic Pain to Passion

Welcome back, dear listeners. I'm excited to share with you a raw and unfiltered conversation I had with my friend and colleague Deb Malkin, all about the beautifully messy reality of being a human being who is evolving and growing while also helping others to heal and grow.   Deb, whose pronouns are she/they, is a feminist, master certified mind-body pain recovery coach, specializing in using the tools of neuro + bioplasticity and consciously curious hypno-coaching to help people unlearn pain and emotional stress symptoms in order to feel better and pursue their amazing lives. Deb has helped clients recover from back pain, migraines, fibromyalgia, GI pain and more.   Deb and I are also part of a cohort of mind-body coaches who get together about twice a month and let it all hang out together, which has been so instrumental for my growth. And as we'll talk about, it's not always easy letting yourself be vulnerable, even in the most supportive of spaces. But what I find over and over again is that it's so worth it, because the healing and growth that comes from allowing ourselves to connect with one another through our vulnerability and honesty is really the only gateway to joy in life, as far as I can tell. So, here's me and Deb getting real with each other — and with you — about what it's like to be a beautifully messy human being who helps other beautifully messy human beings. And I hope this conversation serves as a permission slip to let your own beautiful messiness shine through. Melissa Brunetti, GenX  Certified SMGI® Practitioner, Trauma Healing & Mind-Body Coach with Somatic Mindful Guided Imagery® & Mind Your Own Karma The Adoption Chronicles Podcaster, joins us to talk about her journey to educate people about adoption trauma, the Primal Wound and Somatic Mindful Guided Imagery. Her goal is to inspire people and remind us that we are only one decision away from a totally different life!   She asks all of us to reflect on the question: is it ever too late to reinvent yourself?   She is an example to all of us that it's never too late:   In 2021, at the age of 53, Melissa Brunetti decided to create a podcast, "Mind Your Own Karma," from the ground up. Remarkably, she had never even listened to a podcast before. This single decision ignited a journey of self-discovery, self-confidence, and ultimately a brand-new career. After working as a sonographer for over 30 years, Melissa is now one of the few certified Somatic Mindful Guided Imagery practitioners in the world. She is thrilled to be at the forefront of this unique and effective SMGI technique and is eagerly embracing the challenges of introducing this new modality to those seeking a more holistic approach to their mental and physical well-being.   Topics covered in the Episode: What are the origins of Melissa's podcast to being a Somatic Mindful Guided Imagery Practitioner? What are some adoption discoveries? What is the Mother Wound? What is SMGI and why is it so helpful for those of us with trauma, anxiety, stress, addictions?   3 takeaways:   1.   The common sense that adoptions are like a “Disneyland happy ever after” experience needs to be challenged and the resulting trauma uncovered/accepted. 2.   The Mother Wound or Primal Wound occurs when babies are missing the mother/child bond or connection, which can affect many aspects of life going forward both mentally and physically.  “Coming out of the Fog” is a term used in the adoptee community defining the moment when an adoptee realizes the role adoption trauma has played in how they move and respond in their everyday life. 3.   Somatic Mindful Guided Imagery helps people who are seeking relief from physical or psychological symptoms, stress, anxiety or trauma, find a sense of wellbeing by accessing their subconscious mind, supporting them in discovering their natural ability to achieve healing and wholeness. Special Offer:   Melissa will give our listeners 10% off of a 3 or 6 pack of SMGI with Somatic Mindful Guided Imagery sessions with promo code GTTL10. Buddy Biancalana is one of approximately 1,600 players that have been drafted in the first round since the draft began in 1965. With the weight of expectations, pressure to perform, and the demands of being a professional athlete, Buddy quickly rose through the Kansas City Royals minor league system - from Rookie League to the Major Leagues - in five years.  As a part-time player, Buddy was what the baseball world calls a "good field-no hit" player, playing the demanding shortstop position. Then, late in the 1985 season, Royals manager Dick Howser inserted him in the lineup late in the year, and he played the best baseball of his life. He was a key contributor in helping the Royals win their first World Series.  As he shares in our conversation, the pressure of the World Series was immense. Literally, the entire world was watching. Yet, as you'll hear, Buddy says he was as calm as he'd ever been. And he played flawless defense and hit better than he'd ever hit before. Later, he realized that he'd had an "In the zone" experience.  This experience, along with a childhood incident that Buddy shares in our conversation, led him to begin to study the brain-body connection. Now, as the founder of Zone Motion, he helps athletes and executives have "in the zone" experiences in a more intentional way, rather than by chance.  You can buy Buddy's book, The 7 Secrets of World Class Athletes, here.  *** You can contact Robin Green at robin.green@sandler.com. *** If you like this podcast, you may also like Robin's weekly leadership newsletter, The Huddle. Join the growing number of subscribers (it's free), including leaders from business, education, and athletics. She had about three days a month that weren't terrible, so she went back to therapy to deal with coping with the pain. Through an integrative and functional medicine approach, Ali got to the root of the issue, shame. In November of 2021, Ali will be one year “flare up” free and hoping to keep it that way. She shares her story not to dismiss others that are still suffering, but rather to show them there is hope. There were many things Ali had to change in her day to day life that were affecting her and keeping her sick. Pischy is a trilingual, holistic Mind+Body Coach who helps CEOs, business owners and high achievers maximize sustainable health and success, both in business and personal life. She is also the founder of DARE2LiVE COACH LLC, based in Los Angeles. Pischy has degrees in Psychology, Personal Training, Yoga & Nutrition.  Pischy was born and raised as an only child in a dysfunctional family in Tehran. Her childhood was a series of consecutive horror events. A life, where homework was done in candlelight and taking a shower limited to certain days. Milk was a luxury, banana black market, listening to music forbidden and talking to boys a crime. This was followed by an even more destructive youth. She was constantly humiliated and kicked out of high school and university due to non-compliance with extreme religious rules, even though she was the best in class with the highest grades, year after year! This resulted in depression, alcohol & substance abuse and participating in underground events that had severe  consequences such as education ban, flogging & imprisonment. After she finished high school and university, she relocated to Germany, learned the language and studied further. Being a foreigner and having to compete with Germans, known worldwide for their efficiency and ambition, couldn’t stop her from dreaming big. She worked her way up the career ladder and became a successful executive, working in prestigious companies all over the world. In her latest position as Global Head of HR and as the only female member of the Executive Team, she was responsible for 800 employees, managing multiple teams in the UK, Germany, Japan, China, Russia, South Africa, Dubai, Brazil, Argentina and USA.  After proving herself over 20 years in companies all around the globe, Pischy decided to leave the corporate life and start helping individuals. Problem solving and helping people thrive is and has always been her passion in life, that’s why she chose to work in consulting. Pischy believes that our true purpose in life is to SERVE ourselves and others with love, care and support. As is often the case in mind body work, we find that we have similar ways of thinking about a lot of things with a different way to present that information. Dan's dedication to his clients and to sharing any helpful information he can is readily apparent and you can find his daily videos on his YouTube channel, Pain Free You. His wisdom comes from twelve years of ‘doing everything wrong', in his own words, in his recovery efforts. But with each step trying to find his way, he learned the ways he recommends to think about the mind body situation the right way. We connected on several ideas, such as how fear and attention represent two of the most major sources of mind body symptoms. We continued the discussion in looking at ways to move the field forward and get more people better help. Don't miss this meeting of the minds on how to collaborate in our field to reduce fear and build up maximum hope within the pain population. Do you know if you or your kids are energy sensitive?  If you aren't sure there are ways to tell;  Do you tend to absorb other people's feelings or the mood around you?  In my family if we get in car when one of us is angry or sad, ten minutes later the other one feels the same way for no reason.  Are you sensitive to your environment?  When I travelled to San Francisco for vacation, I felt restless and electric because of the tram cable above me everywhere I went. In this episode we talk about highly sensitive teens and emotional turbulence and the physical symptoms they may experience as a result.  We discuss children who absorb other's energy and how to help them set energy boundaries. Lindsey has us do an exercise to discern between our own energy and that of others. She also guides us in making wiser decisions for our teenager.  lindsylandry.com facebook group: Soul inspired success About Lynsey: Lynsey Landry is an Energy Intuitive, Heart Seer, and Heart Shaman for healers and Soul-Centered women who are ready to heal and deepen their relationships with their partners, finances, business, and most importantly with themSelves.   This week I am joined by Polly Jukes who is a Mind & Body Coach, certified in NLP, Reiki and Mbit.     Polly is one amazing lady who I have been blessed with having in my life. Her story is unique, at times incredibly sad but above all inspiring.   Today Polly is sharing with us the impact of living with alcoholic parents, overcoming all forms of abuse, losing her mother to suicide, ending up in foster care and how she has used her experience to go on and help and support 1000s of other people.     Her mission is to help people find the best version of themselves, to find true fulfillment, lasting happiness and better relationships, so they feel they are enough as this what you deserve.     As one Mindset coach to another I can’t wait to find out more about how what keeps her going and how to turn a negative situation into a truly inspiring business!     About Emma:   Get inspired and fired up with Emma Gibbs-Ng, founder of the Mindset Growth Academy, bringing Mindset to life!   The Mindset Growth Academy Podcast brings together incredible stories of inspiring people from around the world who have achieved greatness, overcome adversity and never given up.   The host, Emma Gibbs-Ng also combines her personal experiences of overcoming multiple traumas along with her a experience as a leading Mindset Coach, to inspire, influence and help thousands of people to create a growth Mindset and achieve greatness in all areas of their life   Emma's Links: Facebook Twitter Instagram LinkedIn Website     About Polly:   I am Polly Jukes and I am a Mind and Body Coach. I have lots of qualifications including NLP, Reiki and Mbit. What I think is really important is the fact that I have overcome all forms of abuse, most from my alcoholic parents, the suicide of my mother and ending up in foster care.     I have come through depression and have made several attempts to end my life, as I felt this was the only way to end my pain and self-hatred, thankfully unsuccessfully.     From my self-sabotaging darkness I have learnt so much, especially with coaching, for me Alcohol misuse was a major negative contributing factor to my mental health and an temporary escape from my switched off, stuck in victim mindset.     I now choose not to drink Alcohol and this feels so empowering, enlightening and energetic.     My mission is to help you find the best version of yourself, to find true fulfillment, lasting happiness and a better relationship with yourself, so you feel you are enough as this what you deserve.      Polly's Links:   Facebook   Instagram   LinkedIn   Email

Wit & Reason with Dr. Alexis MorenoChronic pain is one of the most common reasons adults seek medical care and it has been linked to restrictions in daily activities, dependence on opioids, anxiety, depression, and reduced quality of life (CDC, 2018). But here’s the thing, psychological interventions for chronic pain often provide more relief than prescription drugs or surgery without the risk of side effects but are used much less frequently than traditional medical treatments (APA, 2014)! Dr. Alexis Moreno and guest expert, Clinical Health Psychologist and Mind Body Coach, Dr. Kelly Donahue, review the psychological treatments that actually work to resolve Chronic Pain.Resources from the ShowPrevalence of Chronic Pain and High-Impact Chronic Pain Among Adults (Center for Disease Control and Prevention)Chronic Pain Relief More Likely When Psychological Science Involved (American Psychological Association)Symptoms Commonly Affected by Psychophysiologic Process (Psychophysiologic Disorders Association)Mind-Body Solutions for Health & Happiness (Kelly Donahue, Ph.D.)Everyday Wellness (Kelly Donahue, Ph.D.)All The Rage documentaryHeal documentaryFind Meditation, Yoga & Exercise Classes in Your Area (MindBody App) HostDR. ALEXIS MORENOCONSULTING PSYCHOLOGIST & HEALTH CORRESPONDENTDr. Moreno is passionate about the interplay between mass media communications, culture, and personal factors. Which explains her academic pursuits. She has a Doctorate in Community Clinical Psychology, a Master of Arts in Marriage and Family Therapy, and a Bachelor of Science in both Television Broadcasting and Psychology. The more time she spends studying psychological theory, researching human behavior, and working in the community, the more she is inspired by the power of systematically addressing personal and social issues. She has worked as a health educator with middle and high school students, provided psychotherapy with children, families, and couples recovering from violence and trauma, and treated adults on parole and in maximum security psychiatric hospitals suffering with severe mental illness. Dr. Moreno uses an ecological and biopsychosocial approach to every case conceptualization and collaboratively works with teams in a respectful, humanistic style. Passionate about working with diverse clientele, she tailors her interventions and presentations to engage and meet the needs of every stakeholder involved. GuestKelly Donahue, PhD, NTCClinical Health Psychologist and Mind Body CoachKelly Donahue, PhD. trained in behavioral medicine and clinical psychology at the University of Maryland. After several years in practice and research, she realized that much of traditional psychology focused on disease and helping people to get by. Dr. Donahue wanted to focus on people's strengths and help them grow and thrive in mind and body. In order to be better equipped to do that, she obtained additional training in mind-body medicine from the Benson-Henry Institute and the Center for Mind-Body Medicine in DC. Dr. Donahue further expanded her toolbox with training as a coach from Mindvalley and training in holistic nutrition from the Nutritional Therapy Association. Dr. Donahue learned that once the nervous system becomes regulated, the focus can shift to true healing and growth. Dr. Donahue’s holistic approach combines these skills to help over-stressed men and women reduce anxiety, overcome overwhelm, and begin to heal chronic conditions to live the life they desire. Dr. Donahue has gone through her own journey with chronic pain and the stress of perfectionism, and she has used these skills to come out on the other side. Dr. Donahue work has been published in Health Psychology, Annals of Internal Medicine, Journal of the American Board of Family Practice, and Theranest among others. Dr. Donahue is passionate about teaching these skills with individual clients, through her group programs in The Healthy Change School, by speaking in the community, by serving as a consultant to health and wellness programs and companies, and through my book, Everyday Self-Care.
