Jazz-Pistons was for the sickos. JP gives a quick thought on Utah's win in Detroit before talking to Rickey Green. Rickey, dubbed "The Fastest of Them All" by Hot Rod Hundley, was THE point guard for Frank Layden's run-and-gun system. He was one of the first players acquired to help turn around the struggling Jazz. Hear Green dish on his former teammates (Mark Eaton, Darrell Griffith, and Adrian Dantley) plus describe his journey from the CBA back to the NBA.
What went into the move to Utah? JP Chunga examines the move that introduced Frank Layden to the community. He drafted Darrell Griffith, Mark Eaton, and Thurl Bailey. He traded for Adrian Dantley. And he signed Rickey Green. All of those players would feature in the franchise's first playoff run - a magical team that would be remembered as The Team with Heart.

Try as we might to keep our expectations low, the Thunder just won't let us.
Hello Old Sports is part of the https://sportshistorynetwork.com/ (Sports History Network - The Headquarters For Your Favorite Sport's Yesteryear). EPISODE SUMMARY We've talked about a lot of great teams over the last 18 months, but this time we've decided to challenge ourselves and talk about a completely random team from the history of sports. We landed on the 1981-82 Utah Jazz, led by Adrian Dantley and coached by Frank Layden. The team was bad (25-57) but this podcast episode is absolutely great! What was it like being a teammate to Adrian Dantley and Karl Malone? How did he feel about Isiah Thomas' snub from the 1992 Olympic Dream Team? Which rival player called him a "dirty bastard"? What was it like playing against Charles Barkley and Gary Payton? How does he remember his legendary 1997 playoff game-winning shot? Things discussed: Craig tells a story about the one guy who could defend Adrian Dantley, Wayman Britt. Caleb Houstan's non three pointer game. Big Ten Hoops-around: Is Michigan the favorite? Purdue has a ceiling of Williams, Ohio State lost Washington, Maryland got a PG and a C but lost their Ws. The Wisconsin locker room, and what the hell, we just roll through the whole Big Ten. Justice Finkley: Sam says Michigan got him up for their in-person evaluations and saw a Carlo Kemp not a Matt Judon, and shared that with Finkley, who wants to be an edge. We roundtable whether they should have taken him anyway. In the break we talk about gefilte fish. Shoelace and NIL. I was trying to build up to a point about NIL and then the guys started talking about giving Peppers love life advice and I lost my connection. My point though was that there are two NILs: paying the players through the loophole, and also there are all kinds of opportunities for players who aren't major sport athletes, e.g. Naz or a volleyball player who has thoughts about videogames.
Few players in NBA history have combined offensive production and efficiency like Adrian Dantley. During his time with the Utah Jazz, Dantley was the most talented scorer in the league. But despite his individual success, Dantley was traded from each of his five NBA teams and never won a championship. Here's a look at one of the most unique superstars in league history.
Dan is joined by four time NBA Champion John Salley to discuss his take on health and wellness. John is a vegan activist and he and Dan connected on the idea that we are very influenced by what we feed ourselves — the actual food, in John's case, and the ideas we have about ourself and the world in Dan's case. John shares how he got his viewpoints, including a look at his NBA days, learning from Adrian Dantley, whom he called ‘the teacher' — a name I paired by Dantley showing John everything he needed to know about how to take care of his body and mind in the NBA. We also talked about his being an observer and this leading to his being able to make an impact on people through his understanding. Dan and John also bond over people with emotional struggles gravitating towards them both, as they understand that a different way of thinking isn't necessarily a bad thing. We discuss how following your dreams leads to some of the biggest breakthroughs as well. John's successes in life come from his many gifts — including his empathy and comedic instincts — an it was a pleasure to have him on Crushing Doubt to talk about mental health and what we need to do to better address it.
Wade and Doug bring their player of Adrian Dantley to the group for discussion.
Czabe and Carol Maloney host former Dematha HS star, and All-American from Notre Dame Adrian Dantley outside the Palm in Tysons Corner. AD talks about getting traded multiple times despite leading the NBA in scoring, whether his "ground bound" game could survive in today's NBA, and the time Vinny Johnson's head knocked him out. Also, a breakdown of how Baylor dominated Gonzaga, and more!Advertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy

In this week's episode, Thurl Bailey (former professional basketball player, current Utah Jazz analyst) is joined by Frank Layden (former Utah Jazz head coach) to talk about drafting Thurl in 1983, growing up in Brooklyn, NY, and pursuing his passion for basketball instead of baseball. Then we dive into Frank's decision to attend Niagara University, his time in the army, and the phone call that led Frank to become a coach high school. Frank also talks about meeting his wife for the first time, becoming Niagara's head coach from 1968-1976, and what he learned from coaching Calvin Murphy (former professional basketball player, current Houston Rockets broadcaster). He then details his introduction to the New Orleans Jazz, pushing through the tough years before the team moved to Salt Lake City, and how special the 1984 season was for the team's foundation. We then talk about his regrets surrounding Adrian Dantley (former professional basketball player) and what he would change about his time as a head coach. Lastly, Frank recalls his decision to step down as head coach of the Utah Jazz and to allow Jerry Sloan (Hall of Famer, former Utah Jazz head coach) to begin his tenure as the head coach. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
New Orleans was Frank Layden's favorite place to scout games as a matter of convenience. Back in the 1970s, Layden was an assistant with the Atlanta Hawks and Louisiana was just an hour's flight away. He could fly in, watch his team's upcoming opponent, and be back in his own bed by midnight. Perfect. The affable coach from Brooklyn couldn't have known back then where those trips to the Big Easy would eventually take him—or just how hard that journey would be. On this episode of The Note podcast, Layden reflects on the early days of the Jazz's move to Utah; the trade that brought Adrian Dantley to Salt Lake and the decision to send the legendary Pistol Pete Maravich away; his choice to hand the coaching reins to Jerry Sloan; and why, 40 years later, Layden still calls Utah home.
DeMatha Catholic High School Coaching Legend Morgan WooTten passed away at age 88 on the morning of January 22nd. Morgan's unprecedented coaching career included 5 National Championships and being inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame, as he coached the stags from 1956 until 2002. Some of the players he coached included Adrian Dantley, Danny Ferry, Keith Bogans, among many others.Chris is joined by current DeMatha Head Coach Mike Jones for memories of Coach Wootten and all the contributions and legacy he brought to the sport, which was more than just for high school.
Cleon Wall and Sam Farnsworth are Americans, but even they couldn't complain about Team USA's loss to France. Rudy Gobert and Donovan Mitchell both played fantastic. And the guys also list Utah's all-time top 5 small forwards with a scorer and a 5x5 guy coming out on top of each guys list.
The Over and Back Classic NBA Podcast continues its series on 50-point games continues with a look at the post-merger era, where no dominant stars emerged and 50-point games became increasingly rare. On this episode, hosts Jason Mann and Rich Kraetsch discuss the changing of the guard as the ABA merged with the NBA bringing down the total number of professional basketball games and, by doing so, reducing the number of 50-point games immediately. We also delve into the league’s slowing pace, the last year of double-digit 50-point games until the late 80s, a check-in on stats as they related to 2019 and all-time in 50-point games, the lack of dominant stars in the era and much more. We also take a few minutes to talk about one of the greatest duals in NBA history as David Thompson and George Gervin battled for the NBA scoring title on a single night resulting in both players putting up all-time great scoring totals (with some all-time great stories as well!) Additional players discussed include Marvin “Bad News” Barnes, Gail Goodrich, Phil Smith, Pete Maravich, Adrian Dantley, Calvin Murphy, John Williamson, Truck Robinson, John Drew, Mike Newlin, Freeman Williams, Larry Kenon, Billy Knight, Bernard King, Moses Malone, Ray Williams, Kelly Tripucka, Joe Barry Carroll, Larry Bird, Kiki Vandeweghe, Kevin McHale and Alex English. When will a team unleash the full power of mythic NBA creature Boban Marjanovic? He is the the all-time leader in career points per shot attempt (1974-2018) and his per 36 minute numbers are off the charts! Why can't this behemoth get on the court?
Coach Bob Milloy on Coach Morgan Wootten's coaching style ~ "He could have coached ping pong if you asked him to, but he was just a people guy. I just watched how he dealt with people and he very seldom raised his voice and he never cursed, but he would say to Adrian Dantley, 'Come on Mary Alice, you’ve got to try a little harder.' Those guys would go through the wall. He was the master of it." Coach Bob Milloy, Our Town Guest, and Host Andy Ockershausen in studio Andy Ockershausen: This is Andy Ockershausen and I cannot tell you, you listeners, I hope you all are paying attention, how important it is to me and how it important it is to Our Town to have this gentleman on our program. "The Coach of All Time," I call him. He's the most winningest coach in history for the state of Maryland, high school. He's won over 400 games. He's recently retired, although he'll never retire, and he'd still be winning games. Bob Milloy, the coach of all time. He's in the Sports Hall of Fame, the Maryland Hall of Fame, the Coaches Hall of Fame. He should be in everybody's hall of fame. He's a local guy. Welcome to Our Town, Bob Milloy. Coach Bob Milloy: Thank you so much for that terrific interview. Andy Ockershausen: You hear that all the time. Coach Bob Milloy: It kind of set me back on my heels. I don't know how to follow up on that. Andy Ockershausen: Don't tell me Milloy, you know what it is. You go to, I know, the sports banquets. You know what it is with the Sports Hall of Fame, I was there. You're even a member of the Jocks Hall of Fame, which is bigger to me than that, of course. That's all your guys, all those sports guys you grew up with, went to school with. You're a graduate of the University of Maryland, how about that? Coach Bob Milloy - Homegrown History Coach Bob Milloy: Yes, sir. I am a local guy. I was listening to your podcast with, was it Donald Graham? Andy Ockershausen: Yes. Coach Bob Milloy: He talked about McLean, I guess he was a big real estate guy around here, right? I grew up in McLean Gardens and it's obviously named after his family, right? Andy Ockershausen: That's right. You're Our Town guy. Coach Bob Milloy: No question, yeah. Andy Ockershausen: I knew your dad real well. He was in the automobile business for years. So respected by everybody. But way back, I did not know until today, that you were a St. John's guy. Education - St. Anne's | Blessed Sacrament | Little Flower | St. John's Coach Bob Milloy: Went to St. John's. I started off, went to St. Anne's then Blessed Sacrament when we moved and went to B.S. Andy Ockershausen: St. Anne's is right on Wisconsin Avenue, right? Coach Bob Milloy: Right. I don't think it's a school anymore. Andy Ockershausen: No, I don't ... It's gone. Coach Bob Milloy: The church is still there. Janice Iacona Ockershausen Yeah, church, yeah. Coach Bob Milloy: But then we went to Blessed Sacrament and we got a house out in Bethesda out Bradley Boulevard, which my mother still lives in. Andy Ockershausen: Is that right? How many ... That's a long time ago. Coach Bob Milloy: 1953 we moved in. I was 10 years old and she's still there. Andy Ockershausen: Must have been a dirt road. Coach Bob Milloy: Well there wasn't a lot of trees around in the neighborhood, that's for sure. So anyway, then I went to Little Flower for three years and after Little Flower I went to St. John's. I actually did not get in on the first try. The old man knew somebody and I got a chance to take another test and I got in and then made the honor roll. Andy Ockershausen: How were you commuting then? I know metro, of course, but did you take the bus? Coach Bob Milloy: No, no, no. We had about three families that went to Little Flower and then the other side of the street they all went to Lourde's in Bethesda. Dad went to Capital Cadillac every morning so he would drop us off three days a week and then Mr. Cuddy would drop us off another couple days and it all worked out.

The Los Angeles Clippers are celebrating their 40th Anniversary on the west coast. But, long before they were the Clippers, they were the Buffalo Braves. And what a legacy they left! In just eight years in Buffalo, three players won Rookie of the Year honors (Bob McAdoo, Ernie DiGregorio, Adrian Dantley), Randy Smith became a fan favorite, coaches like Dr. Jack Ramsay and Cotton Fitzsimmons led the team, and the Braves were a thrilling run-and-gun team to watch. They were showtime before the Lakers were. But, the Braves played at a time when Buffalo adored three college basketball teams and the NHL’s Sabres grabbed the headlines and prime dates at the Aud too. This left the Braves with very few marquee dates to play their home games, and Buffalo sports’ fans just didn’t fill the seats when the Braves played. With an owner who wanted a team in his home state of California a most interesting swap of franchises took place, and the city of Buffalo came out on the short end. Tim Wendel, author of “Buffalo, Home of the Braves”, joins the podcast for a terrific conversation about a team and its long-lasting legacy. We look at how the Spurs, Nets, Nuggets, and Pacers adjusted to life in the NBA after being part of the 1976 NBA-ABA merger in the latest edition of Over and Back's Basketball Mysteries of the 1970s. Adam Johnson of Basketball Pantheon joins the show to discuss how the former ABA teams were at an initial competitive disadvantage because of the terms of the merger, how 1977 was the first season with a fully balanced NBA schedule, how the Nuggets with David Thompson and Dan Issel had come off an ABA Finals run in 1976 and were a strong NBA Finals contender, a forgotten classic Nuggets-Bucks playoff series in 1978, how Thompson's drug problems eventually caught up with him, how the Spurs were initially successful in San Antonio, how the Spurs became contenders in the late '70s but fell short in two consecutive series vs. the Bullets, how the Pacers were forced to rebuild in the late '70s after being an ABA dynasty, Indiana's puzzling series of trades where they would lose out on future superstars (including Adrian Dantley, Bernard King and Alex English), the Nets being forced to trade Julius Erving and losing Tiny Archibald to injury, and the move from New York to New Jersey. They also discuss the 1976 ABA dispersal draft and how Artis Gilmore, Moses Malone, Maurice Lucas, Ron Boone and Marvin Barnes made their marks on the NBA, and how some former ABA talent was left out in the cold. The Total Tutor Neil Haley and Coach Karen Hall will interview Notre Dame University Basketball Star Ray Martin. Born and raised in Long Island City, Queens, N.Y., Martin was an All-American on the hardwood at Mater Christi High School (now St. John's Preparatory High School) in Astoria, Queens, N.Y., and was voted as the Best High School Basketball Player in New York City in 1973. Martin went on to play four years of basketball at Notre Dame under head coach Digger Phelps, starting at point guard and earning the honor of team captain as a senior for the Fighting Irish. He was a college teammate of NBA standout Adrian Dantley and a member of the Notre Dame team that ended UCLA's 88-game winning streak on Jan. 19, 1974. After earning his bachelor's degree in economics from Notre Dame in 1977, his first coaching job was as the head freshman coach at Harvard University during the 1977-78 campaign. Martin then spent eight seasons as an assistant coach at North Carolina State University under head coach Jim Valvano. During his tenure at N.C. State from 1980-88, the Wolfpack won two ACC Championships (1983, 1987) and made six trips to the NCAA Tournament, including a National Championship title in 1983.
Adam & Aaron celebrate the 30th anniversary of Michael Jordan's second season in the National Basketball Association. This episode covers: - NBA regular season - November 24 through December 8, 1985 - Insightful minutiae, all but lost to the annals of basketball history In this episode, we discuss numerous happenings from the next 15-day block of the 1985-86 NBA season. The Chicago Bulls played nine games (all on the road) in this span – two wins and seven losses. 18 of the Bulls' first 24 games, were away from home. We chat about the increased productivity of Chicago's Quintin Dailey. His scoring ability was needed more than ever, with Michael Jordan still on the sidelines. Never short of a post-game quote, Dailey had choice words about the Washington Bullets' Darren Daye, after an incident with the Bulls' John Paxson. We also talk about the Boston Celtics' tremendous early-season form. The team's nine-game win streak was broken by the visiting Portland Trail Blazers - it would be the Celtics' sole regular-season loss at home. Stan Albeck (Chicago coach) extraordinarily asked permission from his regular starters, to have his four former-Spurs players, in the starting lineup, for the Bulls' game at San Antonio. It worked beautifully, with each of the ex-Spurs having good performances. Further, we discuss some scoring milestones. The Denver Nuggets' Alex English racked up 15,000 career points, whilst the Cleveland Cavaliers' World B. Free, surpassed 16,000 for his career.
