Matt was born and raised in Utah, living in Salt Lake City his entire life. Spent a couple of years in Cleveland Ohio, and an internship in New York City, but mostly spending time in Olympus Cove, jumping trash cans on his BMX, and hiking the nearby mountains in Millcreek and Neff's Canyons, looking for his dog Oly, and trying to find what other dogs Oly had impregnated. Matt currently lives in East Millcreek with his wife Sheri, son Isaac, and daughters Sarah and Rachel. As a family they love to ski in the winters, hike in the summers, and travel to Hawaii, Costa Rica, and anywhere with a beach and tropical weather. Matt's kids are athletes, and all played high school sports, primarily swimming and water polo. Matt is a Skyline High School alum and a University of Utah alum. Matt has been involved and participating in endurance sports, primarily running and cycling for over 35 years, focusing on cycling for the last 10 years. Matt owns and works at Design Team, a commercial flooring and window covering company, which has been in business for over 40 years, and was started by Matt's father and mother, Steve and Elaine Dalton. Matt has a wealth of experience representing both the public and private sector with positions in the Private Security Field, Public Sector Administration, and recently was a Municipal Youth Engagement Coordinator with Canada's sixth largest city. His focus is on both holistic community development and capacity building of individuals within priority neighbourhoods. In 2016, he graduated with a Double Major in Criminology and Political Sciences with a Minor in Canadian Studies from the University of Toronto. In 2018, he also graduated with a Masters of Public Policy Administration and Law (M.P.P.A.L.) from York University. Currently Matt is serving at his local church as a Youth Leader and is studying church ministry. Matt is adamant about community service and has volunteered for three years as first the Marketing Director and later on the Vice Chair of a local community festival growing the event from initially 1000 to 7000 guests in the latter years of his role. He has also volunteered for various organizations such as Malton Neighbourhood Services, Safe City Mississauga, the Peel District School Board, and with his local Ward 5 City Councillor. Matt has also served on the teams of various politicians running in elections, and was also invited to attend the Mobilizing 22 conference, which hosted 100 of Mississauga's top youth leaders in the City. Matt is passionate about encouraging youth and young adults in their pursuit of their goals by equipping them with life skills, best practices, and advice on how to navigate education, one's personal life, and the work force. Matt firmly believes in the idea of seeing people for their potential of becoming and not solely where they currently are today. Matt grew up catching trout and bass in the historic Adirondack Mountains, and not long after was chasing the huge trophy steelhead, browns and salmon in the Great Lakes tributaries every fall and spring. Little did Matt know that his first rod and reel outfit from Sage in 1991 would change his life forever. After double majoring at University of Morrisville and University of Cortland, Matt would begin his full time career in fly fishing. He is a graduate of NOLS (National Outdoor Leadership School) and worked for the International Federation of Fly Fishers (now Fly Fishers International) in Livingston Montana as his first job out of college where he also became a Certified Casting Instructor. Currently Matt runs his Fly Fishing School and Outfitter (http://mattheronflyfishing.com/) in Squaw Valley and Truckee in Lake Tahoe, CA. He has quickly turned his school at Resort at Squaw Creek into one of the premier fly fishing education programs in the country. His guide staff primarily focuses on the Truckee and Little Truckee rivers on the north shore of Lake Tahoe. In the off season, Matt can be found exploring the world’s finest destination and lodges hosting trips with clients and friends. As a sight fishing junkie, it’s hard to beat fishing cursing the flats! Matt has also recently accepted a position with Cast Hope as the Reno/Tahoe Regional Director.
