There is also a sense of uncertainty since I have never recorded in the winter. I really enjoy the diversity of location and wildlife when I record, so I hope I don't get six months of wind. Speaking of wind….. this recording started out as a test of some new wind protection equipment for my microphone. I went out to Old Mission Peninsula (a favorite location) on a stormy night to see how the new Modular Windshield (blimp) from Rycote would fare. The windshield provides up to 30db wind noise attenuation and there is also an option to add a windjammer that adds a 20db of attenuation. That's an insane amount of wind protection, right? On the night I recorded, wind gusts were approaching 25-30 miles per hour, which would have been a non-starter for the Rycote BBG windshield I normally use. I think the biggest difference is that the entire microphone is encased in the blimp, which provides greater protection and minimizes the chances of wind finding its way to the stereo capsule. Its additional weight also helps in stabilizing the microphone so it doesn't get buffeted by the wind. The results of the new windshield speak for themselves. I had no intention of using this recording for a podcast episode, but I have been obsessing over this track for hours now and wanted to share it with you. I have been calling it the original white noise, which is perfect for sleep and meditation. The wind is intense but doesn't overwhelm the microphone. The sound of snapping branches and the occasional chirp of crickets are also present, which adds some depth to this dark and stormy night in the woods.As always, I welcome your thoughts and hope you enjoy this episode. Inspired at age 6 by a viewing of ABBOTT & COSTELLO MEET FRANKENSTEIN, Frank Dietz has found success in the film industry as a writer, producer, director, actor and animator. Frank grew up on Long Island, N.Y, and then attended the State University at Oswego, where he majored in theatre and art. He starred in a series of now-cult low-budget horror films like ZOMBIE NIGHTMARE, ROCK N' ROLL NIGHTMARE, BLACK ROSES and THE JITTERS. In 1996, Frank returned to his artistic roots and joined Walt Disney Studios as an animation artist. His work can be seen in such films as HERCULES, MULAN, TARZAN, FANTASIA 2000, ATLANTIS - THE LOST EMPIRE, TREASURE PLANET and HOME ON THE RANGE.  Frank was awarded the very first Rondo Hatton Classic Horror Awards for “Artist Of The Year.” In 2009 he joined Larry Blamire's Bantam Street troupe, and appeared in THE LOST SKELETON RETURNS AGAIN and DARK AND STORMY NIGHT. In 2011, Frank  teamed up Benevolent Monster Productions. Their first project as co-directors and producers was BEAST WISHESThat documentary went on to win multiple awards, including the Rondo Hatton Award for "Best Documentary." The following year they produced a comedy short called A ZOMBIE NEXT DOOR. I've been a fan of theirs for a couple of years, and was a bit star struck to have them on the podcast today. We sit down to discuss our favorite genre of mysteries as well as give tons of recommendations for your TBR lists. Valentine's Day 2000 began like any other day for Iquilla Degree. It was her 12 wedding anniversary, and while she and her husband, Harold, had plans to spend the day together, the kids still needed to go to school. When she entered the room shared by the couple's two children, O'Bryant and Asha, only to discover O'Bryant, she had no idea that it was the beginning of an unending nightmare.

In the early morning hours of Valentine's Day 2000, 9-year-old Asha Degree set out on foot, as a storm loomed, and her family presumably slept peacefully in their beds. She was allegedly spotted by motorists about a mile and a half from her home, a curious sight on the lonely and dark highway. Despite exhaustive searches, FBI involvement, and several clues, none of it has led to the whereabouts of Asha, nor has this question been answered: what would make a nine-year-old girl, who was afraid of storms, leave her home in the middle of a dark and stormy night?

Shit's scary out there in the world. There's viruses. Political wars. Freak bomb cyclones. Facebook's Metaverse. You manage to dodge your way through it all but need a freaking martini and gummies to feel a sliver of normalcy at night. We get it! Know what's even darker and stormier than that stuff? Letting yourself get pummeled by all that crap and believing  life has to be hard and bad things are going to happen to you and you're going to die.Now that's some real scary shit right there.
