Bow before the mighty Thor! That's Jon Mikl Thor, obviously, the musclebound Canadian hard rocker whose mix of riffs and strongman stunts never quite led him to rock Valhalla. Not that it stopped him trying, and Rock 'n' Roll Nightmare was his biggest swing at the big leagues. On paper, it's a canonical hard rock horror movie, right down to the not-exactly-a-stretch casting of Thor as the frontman of a rock band. In practice, it is far, far stranger than that. Join Graham and Jeff as they discuss the film's alarmingly phallic puppets, its inexplicably long driving sequences and the insane third-act twist that seals its cult movie legend. We also discuss the twisty career of Thor himself, not least the time when he got a new manager who wanted to reshape his career path based on the channelled wisdom of the New Age entity "Seth". The '70s, everyone! If you want to hear us talking about rock - rock! Rock! - as well as several other musical genres, you'll find a monthly bonus episode of this show on our Patreon, as well as our monthly movie round-up Last Night..., weekly reviews of The X-Files and Red Dwarf, articles on classic Asian genre cinema and much, much more. Horror movies and heavy metal music have almost gone hand in hand, since the real first heavy metal band, Black Sabbath- which was even named after a horror film! Horror films were a huge influence on the metal genre, from imagery on the album covers, to the lyrics, and even the sound and style of the music itself. And they continue to do so to this day. To delve a little deeper into the connection between those two, we invited two members of Incantation, one of the oldest death metal bands out there, Kyle Severn and Chuck Sherwood. So join us as we talk music, metal, and movies! In the 80s, the nation was gripped in the fear of metal music. Satanic panic had spread, and so B-level filmmakers did what they did best and exploited it for storylines. John Fasano is one such filmmaker and really has done it multiple times over. If Rock 'n' Roll Nightmare was the opening act, then Black Roses is his million dollar budget headliner. Full of pervert mustaches, wobbly puppets, Italians, and enough hairspray to choke a horse, Black Roses serves as a time capsule for how lame it was to be a teenager in the 80s. Editor's Note: Steve incorrectly says there are two good yeets in this movie, but he forgot the Gorilla Press Slam. This is a three yeet film, baby. The Smut Peddler is not amused by Django Nudo's bass player jokes. Shameless plug for the Jens Bådd special edition DVD combo package and JustWatch launch is imminent. Then we rock out big time to some of our favourite music films from the 60s, 70s and 80s.Wild Guitar (1962) - Arch Hall Jr might not have been anybody's idea of a rock idol, but his dad was a film producer, so this is how he got his rockin' start. He then went on to appear in The Choppers and The Sadist.  Disk-O-Tek Holiday (1966) - One of the best preserved rock films, scanned from the original negative and starring  20 great performances by vintage rock acts culminating in an astounding "almost live" medley by Freddy Cannon and the Ramrods.Musical Mutiny (1970) - The multi-talented Barry Mahon directed this rock film about the ghost of a pirate taking over a theme park and staging a rock concert. Iron Butterfly perform on stage in this lunatic time capsule from an era long gone.  Toomorrow (1970) - This bizarre sci-fi musical about a dying aliens seeking 'vibes' from a pop band on Earth was such a disaster that the lead, a young Olivia Newton-John, gave up acting for eight years, until her agent persuaded her to do Grease. Has to be seen to be believed.   Rock'n'Roll Nightmare (1987) - Rock band practicing in isolated farmhouse get more than they bargained for when evil haunts the place and turns the band members into demons from hell. Based on the success of this Canuxploitation, director John Fasano would the following year go on to make:  Black Roses (1988) - Metal band come to play in a small town. Conservative parents are won over, but wait until they see the band hypnotise their children into crazed murderous hordes. The demon band on stage looks like Finnish band Lordi.  Hell′s Bells - the Dangers of Rock′n′Roll (1989) - Documentary warning about the dangers of the Devil's music - if the previous two films were not warning enough.  Ola & Julia (1967) - A Romeo-Juliet story of singer meeting actress but their band/troupe don't get on. Stars real-life singer of Ola & the Janglers.  Grejen (1966) and Drra på - kul grej på väg till Götet / A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to Gothenburg (1967) - popular Swedish 60's band Lee Kings, joined in the latter film by a bunch of other popular Swedish bands (and comedians as their managers) who go on a madcap race from Stockholm to Gothenburg. Singing ensues.  Under ditt parasoll / Under Your Parasol (1968) - The band Sven Ingvars went broke (literally) making this bizarre road movie-musical: promenade orchestra 1912, pop band with electric guitars and revolver duelling cowboys in Desperado City!Blödaren / The Bleeder (1982) - Female rock band ends up in an abandoned house with a psycho killer. The cursed year that was 2021 has come to an end and Lee felt like going out on a more positive note. In this mega-sized episode he's compiled a list of tracks from fictional bands and musical artists that have appeared in films. Lots of research went into this one, as Lee tries to give credit where credit is due to the people behind the fictional acts. Be it totally made up acts, parody acts that came before their film debuts, or if they actually formed later on in real life, Lee tries to cover a little of everything.
