The Gospel of Mark is considered by many scholars to be the first Gospel account formally written about Jesus's life and ministry. While it bears Mark's name in our translations, there was no title to the Gospel originally. In fact, while it was likely Mark's pen that wrote the Gospel, the words are the apostle Peter's. It bears all of the markers of Peter's personality, strong and frenetic. It also is Peter's reflections of his relationship with Jesus. Today's sermon: The Story of My Friend. (Mark 1:1-15)

Holmberg's Morning Sickness - Brady Report - Friday May 28, 2021
Mark 2:13-17 (NASB) 13 And He went out again by the seashore; and all the people were coming to Him, and He was teaching them. Levi (Matthew) Called 14 As He passed by, He saw Levi the son of Alphaeus sitting in the tax booth, and He said to him, "Follow Me!" And he got up and followed Him. 15 And it happened that He was reclining at the table in his house, and many tax collectors and sinners were dining with Jesus and His disciples; for there were many of them, and they were following Him. 16 When the scribes of the Pharisees saw that He was eating with the sinners and tax collectors, they said to His disciples, "Why is He eating and drinking with tax collectors and sinners?" 17 And hearing this, Jesus said to them, "It is not those who are healthy who need a physician, but those who are sick; I did not come to call the righteous, but sinners." Sermon Theme/Outline: The Lord Jesus Christ was singularly focused on the mission of making disciples, befriending spiritually sinners who needed God's grace. 1) Jesus Teaches (2:13) 2) Jesus Leads (2:14) 3) Jesus Connects (2:15) 4) Jesus Corrects (2:17)

Holmberg's Morning Sickness - Monday February 15, 2020
This week Manny and Jess remind you of the terrifying tales that haunted your childhood sleepovers.
Mike has shared before that his dad retired in his early 40s, and this lifestyle approach inspired Mike’s FIRE journey at a young age. Maggie has been trying to get Mike’s dad on the show for a while, and we finally succeeded when Mark and Jack invited themselves on the show. In this discussion with Jack and Mark, we cover many topics, including:Jack and Mark met at work, just like Mike and Maggie! They found a common interest in saving enough money so they could jump out whenever they wanted to.Jack and Mark nicknamed themselves the Pros of Dover. How they each grew up and what it taught them about money. The importance of values and how they learned early on they had the same values.A Franklin planner influenced parts of Jack’s life and journey.Jack read this book at 28, which inspired him on this journey: Cashing in on the American Dream: How to Retire at 35. He would not recommend this book today though! Two books that Mark found inspiring: Rich Dad, Poor Dad and The Millionaire Next Door. Avoiding lifestyle inflation and keeping up with the Joneses.Accumulating money is buying yourself options for later in your life. It’s all about accumulating a big next egg so you can have options when you leave work. At a young age, Jack realized that he had all of these other personal goals he wanted to pursue in life, outside of work. Fairly early on, Jack got his company to agree he could take summers off to travel with his kids. He structured his job around what he wanted, and he wasn’t afraid to ask for what he wanted. He decided to keep making money as long as possible until it wasn’t fun anymore. When he decided not to take a job when his company was moving and instead retire early to spend time with his family, he got a letter from the CEO praising his decision. The importance of being in sync with your partner on values. The bureaucracy and stress of some jobs can become all-consuming. Being on call 24/7 with the advance of new technology and how disruptive it can be. Keeping in mind what you’re at work for and why you’re doing it. Jack’s love of log paper. We think this is basically graph paper, but we’re still not entirely sure. Mark still has one of their projection net worth curves from 1995! Jack doesn’t think math is Mike’s thing. Maggie was shocked by this statement! If performance is measured, performance improves! If you just continue to save a lot of money and do it at a consistent rate, you’ll get there.Jack always treated saving money as a hobby. Trying to keep the same spending level year over year became a fun challenge for him.Value-based thinking eliminates a lot of remorse. Regrets are difficult as you don’t know what the alternative future would have been. The problem that Jack sees with people who want to retire early is that they don’t have a clear plan on what they are going to do post-retirement. Have a plan and vision for how you spend your life!---Show ReferencesBook: Cashing in on the American Dream: How to Retire at 35 (they don’t recommend!)Book: Rich dad poor dadBook: The millionaire next door---Follow friends on FIRETwitterInstagramFacebookLinkedInLeave us a voicemail or text us: 404-981-3370eMail us at: friendsonfiremm@gmail.comVisit our website: www.friendsonfire.orgfriends on FIRE etsy store---Other LinksMaggie’s Blog: Mostly Minimal LifeMike’s Book: Your New Relationship with Money
Turning Arizona Blue is back with Arizona wins thanks to Democratic GOTV efforts at the state, county and local levels from party organizations, district committees, volunteers and the voters. While we succeeded in the Biden/Harris and Mark Kelly contests, and despite record turnout from Democrats, Independent and moderate/anti-Trump Republicans, it wasn't enough to overcome our traditional Red-state voters in the down ballot races. My friend Mark Heier is back to celebrate the wins and discuss translating Biden policies in the next two years into Arizona Blue wins at the state, congressional, legislative and local levels. Two-years of positive and impactful policies at the national level will help hold those independent and moderate Republican voters as potential voters up and down the ballot in 2022. And without Trump on the ballot, those Republican office holders will not have the political cover and turnout of the Trumpian voting cult.In future podcasts, we'll analyze the upsides and downsides of this election and turn to what we can all do on this journey of Turning Arizona Blue. Please subscribe to and like Turning Arizona Blue where you get podcasts; leave a review at our Facebook page Turning Arizona Blue; follow us on Twitter @TurningAZ; and email us at turningazblue@gmail.com. Just like an old Arizona prospector, digging up nuggets and gems in the desert, I have excavated a gem in friend Mark Heier, an astute observer of people and politics. Mark's perspective on the recent RNC convention and the absurdity of it all, offers a rich load of satire even during this most serious election. Together, we cover Donald's and Ivanka's speeches, a comparison to the DNC convention, and the criminality of this administration. Also, with the help of CNN we cover 20 lies in Donald Trump's 70 minute acceptance speech -- an average of one every three-and-a-half minutes. He must be so proud. Please subscribe to and like Turning Arizona Blue where you get podcasts; leave a review at our Facebook page Turning Arizona Blue; follow us on Twitter @TurningAZ; and email us at turningazblue@gmail.com.

October 1, 2017. A Good Friend. Mark Brown. John 15:13-15 by Northpoint Vineyard Church
And…we’re…back! Thank you for your patience. Now, grab whatever libation strikes your fancy, throw on your most comfortable headphones, and strap in for part 2 of our Mark pentalogy. Today we begin with my response to, “What drove you to drink today?” The answer? Friendships, Facebook, and confrontation. See, some friendships improve and deepen with age, much like the very spirits, wines, and beers which drive this endeavor. Other friendships stall and shift in the direction of acquaintance, both parties perfectly content with the development. Certain friendships fade away slowly, much like the resonance of a prayer bell, eventually becoming a vague, positive memory. And occasionally things really change abruptly and for the worse. When the latter happens, as it did for me, a decision must be made…to confront or not to confront? Then, if one confronts, is the confrontation in the spirit of breaking up or reconciling? But, I really don’t want to deal with any of this shit right now. So…not to confront. (But I know I should.) And, do I want to reconcile or break-up? (The very question points me in the direction of the answer…and again, I don’t want to deal with that.) So, a quick Manhattan followed by a double Old-Fashioned it is! In this episode, Mark and I discuss levels of friendship, and it seems like they shake-out as follows: 1. Kidney-giving level Unequivocal kidney giving Kidney giving with hesitation Kidney giving as a last resort (i.e. “If no one else will, I suppose…”) Begrudging kidney giving with the option of holding it over the receiver’s head (i.e. “Can you lend me $100?” “Sorry, I don’t have it right now.” “Oh, okay. How’s my kidney treating you?”) 2. Premium level Frequent hang-out, in home Frequent hang-out, not in home, one check Frequent hang-out, not in home, separate checks Occasional hang-out, and all is well in the world 3. Acquaintence level Infrequent hang-out, no time limit Infrequent hang-out, time limit Rare hang-out 4. Facebook level Frequent interaction Infrequent interaction Unfollowed Unfriended The drink? Wigle Four malt whiskey old fashioned The music? “I’ll be there for you,” by The Rembrandts and “Just a Friend,” by Biz Markie We present to you, “You Say He Just a Friend. (Mark, pt 2)” No kidney for you. And separate checks! Good day. I…said…good…day!
