MONSTER PARTY STARTS THE YEAR OFF WITH A "B"! JAMES GONIS, SHAWN SHERIDAN, LARRY STROTHE, and MATT WEINHOLD, start the year off right with a loving salute to those little movies that could. They may have had low budgets and questionable special effects, but to monster kids of every age, they're classics. MONSTER PARTY proudly invites you to explore... THE B MOVIE LEGACY!!! The original definition of a "B movie" was a film that was the second feature of double bill. These films usually had substantially lower budgets than the "A" movies," but what they lacked in funding, they often made up for with creativity, outrageousness, and style. These days, the term "B movie" is used to describe any small production that is considered by snooty critics to be schlocky or lowbrow. But any non-jaded lover of genre cinema will tell you that whether it's UNKNOWN ISLAND, ATTACK OF THE CRAB MONSTERS, or the much maligned, THE GIANT CLAW, there's way more to these movies than you might expect. Joining us for this B movie bash are two new guests to MONSTER PARTY who are definitely kindred spirits. One is a legendary writer, actor, artist, and filmmaker, who gave us such beloved horror/sci-fi comedies as THE LOST SKELETON OF CADAVRA FILM SERIES, and TRAIL OF THE SCREAMING FOREHEAD. Please give a big welcome to... LARRY BLAMIRE! Our other guest is an acclaimed screenwriter, playwright, and director, who wrote the play and screenplay for the 2001 Peter Bogdanovich film, THE CAT'S MEOW, as well as directing the film FOOTPRINTS (2009) and co-writing and directing THE UNDYING (2009). Let's have another big welcome for... STEVEN PEROS! Mr. Blamire and Mr. Peros have recently worked together on the 2023 book, GIANT BEAST CINEMA: A MONSTROUS MOVIE GUIDE (A follow-up to 2023 Rondo Award nominated, GIANT BUG CINEMA: A MONSTER KID'S GUIDE. They like big bugs and they cannot lie!). This book features film reviews from Larry and Steven, and well contributions from JUSTIN HUMPHREYS, TRACY MERCER, MIKE PEROS, and BRIAN R. SOLOMON. Available from BEARMANOR MEDIA! SO, THERE YOU HAVE IT MONSTER PARTIERS! NOW GO GIVE THOSE B MOVIES AN "A"!
We've been huge fans of Andrew Parks, ever since seeing his unforgettable turn as the alien Kro-Bar in Larry Blamire's THE LOST SKELETON OF CADAVRA (2001). It was an incredible privilege to be able to hang out and chat about his extensive career in movies and television! You'll hear stories about Jimmy Stewart, Angela Landsbury, Jim Beaver and frequent collaborator (not to mention two time BRIG inhabitant), Larry Blamire! We also talk extensively about such irreverent Blamire classics as DARK AND STORMY NIGHT (2009) and of course, TRAIL OF THE SCREAMING FOREHEAD (2007)! ----------------------------------------Retro Ridoctopus is:• Parasite Steve (read)• 8-Bit Alchemy (listen)• Nintenjoe (subscribe)----------------------------------------All original heavy metal music by Enchanted Exile Retro Ridoctopus is part of the Dorkening Podcast Network, the Inebri-Art Podcast Network and is brought to you by Deadly Grounds Coffee!
This week I look at the classic Larry Blamire film, The Lost Skeleton of Cadavra from 2001. This delightful comedy is a parody of 1950s-style science fiction B films. Written and directed by Larry, it stars Fay Masterson, Andrew Parks, Susan McConnell, Brian Howe, and Jennifer Blaire. You don't know the Lost Skeleton but you will! “This horrible mutilation has a whole lot of people on a whole lot of edges.”
Larry Blamire returns again (for the first time) to talk all about his newest books "Still At Large" and "Flapjack Alley". One is out now, the other is on the way, but both as chock full of delightful absurdist humor that is sure to either split your side, or possible leave it in stitches. Later on, we get Larry to do the reminiscing thing about the early days of his career working for the stage in Boston. You'll hear how he met some of the actors and aliens who would later appear in THE LOST SKELETON OF CADAVRA, and thrill as your Octohosts drop a surprise dramatic reading of BRIDE OF THE MUTANT'S TOMB on Larry's lap! As the kids say... this one's a hoot, pops! SOME BLAM-TASTIC LINKS WATCH! The Blu-rays of Larry's film's are only at Hydraulic Entertainment! READ! Slumgullion 100 Part 2: Larry Blamire by Jeff and Scott
It's the last week of our birthday series, and we're wrapping up with a household comfort movie: Larry Blamire's indie b-movie parody, The Lost Skeleton of Cadavra from 2001!This movie (and its sequels) stand apart from other bad-on-purpose parodies, and we're here to talk about how it achieves that through its dialogue, structure, music, and yes, love. We're campaigning to bring back free coffin giveaways at the cinema, and Charles Bronson pops up where you least expect him.Anyway, next week we're ringing in Labour Day with Michael Mann's Thief (1981)!
This week we're celebrating a pillar of Taiwanese cinema: King Hu's foundational art-house wuxia A Touch of Zen from 197-mumble-mumble. If you're a fan of Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, this is where it all started! We're discussing the lengths King Hu went to portray history in cinema, how this movie plays with scope and storytelling expectations, and our struggle with what little we know about Buddhism (it does not, in real life, grant you superpowers).Next week we're wrapping up our birthday month with Larry Blamire's indie-parody b-movie comedy, The Lost Skeleton of Cadavra (2001)!

Movie Meltdown - Episode 399 This week we are coming to you "live" from WonderFest where we are joined by this week's special guest... actor Brian Howe. One of the hardest working and most impressive actors in the business, Brian's been featured in Westworld, Catch Me If You Can, The Pursuit of Happyness, American Horror Story, Gran Torino, Annabelle, K-PAX, The Majestic, Déjà Vu, Evan Almighty, Lie to Me, Criminal Minds, Masters of Sex, House of Lies, The Newsroom, Nikita, Justified - and of course, he's one of the cast of regulars in the Larry Blamire films (The Lost Skeleton of Cadavra, Dark and Stormy Night, Trail of the Screaming Forehead, The Lost Skeleton Returns Again). And in between our bouts of clowning around and being a dork, we also bring up... Spielberg's shooting style, that was paramount to me, one of them practically Xeroxed her rolodex, anything I could do - I did, Tony Scott, laying the groundwork, a cast of small town lunatics, Larry Moss, Summer stock theater in the Poconos, Fay Masterson, striking up the band, David Mamet, Trish Geiger, one big scene with Denzel, working in tandem, Kevin Spacey, Spy Hard, America's most beloved action figure, the quiet scary moments, Jim Carrey, State and Main, the bloom is off the rose, it was tremendous fun... blood all over the place, Frank Darabont, The Conjuring Universe, hours were long... temperatures were torturous, it was like the biggest most lumbering independent film I'd ever been involved with, when a casting director goes the extra mile, Kerry O'Malley, fly wrangler, that's how we got our revenge for his, rather indelicate criticism... of our work, a benevolent madman, K-Pax, snow in Pasadena, straight and kind of silly or full absurd, messing with Gabriele Muccino, a sustained level of dread, had to have a fake car to pick him up, one thing, with persistence, does actually lead to another, Will Smith, a state of trust, houses can have bad mojo, Clint Eastwood, my favorite... boy I'm making a Hollywood movie moment, Jeff Bridges, shooting for a dollar and a bucket of chicken, gettin' the laughs and singin' the songs, self-consuming hybrids and Tom Hanks goes mad. The Damn Dirty Geeks geek out with the amazing character actor H.M. Wynant, star of one of the best Twilight Zone episodes plus a featured actor in CONQUEST OF THE PLANET OF THE APES, among his lengthy list of credits. H.M. is the first APES veteran we’ve had as a guest on our podcast, though he won’t be the last! Joining the Geeks and H.M. is a talented director/producer and film historian Michael Schlesinger, a friend of the Geeks with a steel trap mind when it comes to Hollywood history — which came in very handy during this episode as H.M. recaps his decades-long acting career and lengthy list of co-stars! Being lifelong fans of the PLANET OF THE APES films, the Geeks were thrilled to have H.M. Wynant as a guest on our podcast as a cast member alumnus from the classic franchise films — but there’s so much more to H.M.’s acting career. Enjoy the tales of his lengthy credit list that including dozens of Hollywood legends including: Clark Gable (RUN SILENT, RUN DEEP), Errol Flynn (PLAYHOUSE 90), director Sam Fuller and actor Charles Bronson (RUN OF THE ARROW), Randolph Scott and director Budd Boetticher (DECISION AT SUNDOWN), creator Rod Serling and actor John Carradine (THE TWILIGHT ZONE), Elvis Presley (IT HAPPENED AT THE WORLD’S FAIR), Adam West (BATMAN), Roddy McDowall, Don Murray, Ricardo Montalbano and Severn Darden (CONQUEST OF THE PLANET OF THE APES) and many more. We try not to fan-geek out discussing H.M.’s guest starring turn on excellent 1960 episode of THE TWILIGHT ZONE, “The Howling Man,” which series fans often consider among the very best produced by Serling for the landmark show. H.M. regales us with tales of how writer Charles Beaumont and episode director Douglas Heyes battled over whether or not to reveal the prisoner’s true identity, and a surprising resolution to this decision. As the delirious and eventually doomed David Ellington, H.M.’s multi-layered performance makes this tale of good versus evil immensely believable despite its simple setup. Enjoy listening to how H.M. approached this pivotal role in the episode, and speculate on why “The Howling Man” remains so highly praised after five decades of syndication. H.M. spoils the Geeks with his tales on the set of CONQUEST, working with Don Murray (who got his first job in Hollywood via H.M.) and Severn Darden, who made an indelible impression on H.M. Then he shifts gears to play a villain with a farcical comedy touch in two episodes of the classic BATMAN series, co-starring as henchman Frosty working for Mr. Freeze (Eli Wallach) in the second season episodes “The Duo Defy” and “Ice Spy.” Not only does our added guest Michael Schlesinger save our conversational bacon by pulling historic Hollywood names out of thin air during our chat with H.M., but you’ll learn some fascinating details about his work on Larry Blamire’s feature comedies THE LOST SKELETON RETURNS AGAIN and DARK AND STORMY NIGHT, both also featuring H.M. in hilarious supporting roles. Michael also co-wrote and directed THE ADVENTURES OF BIFFLE AND SHOOSTER, a series of simulated 1940s comedy shorts starring a fictional comedy duo (Nick Santa Maria and Will Ryan), along with co-stars including H.M. plus our own Frank Dietz and Trish Geiger. This week it's a double feature of reviews from Darryll and Desmond as they take on Larry Blamire's homages to 1950s drive-in schlock sci-fi films: The Lost Skeleton of Cadavra and The Lost Skeleton Returns Again. Then Desmond goes solo on a review of the first season of Fear the Walking Dead. Then there's music: "Skulls" and "Green Hell" by The Misfits, "Inferno Finale" by Keith Emerson, and "Lost Skeleton" by Michale Graves. RIP Keith Emerson.
