1994 continues to be one of the worst years for movies of all time with Mary Shelley's Frankenstein. Mary Shelly's Frankenstein Directed by Kenneth Branagh Starring Kenneth Branagh's ego Drowning in the ego of Kenneth Branagh, Mary Shelley's legendary monster story miscasts Robert De Niro as the monster while doing everything to indulge the ego of star and director Kenneth Branagh.
Grammy-nominated singer-songwriter and producer, JC Chasez, and Golden Globe winning songwriter, producer and composer Jimmy Harry announce their groundbreaking new musical theater concept album, Playing With Fire. Inspired by Mary Shelly's timeless novel Frankenstein, Playing with Fire marks Chasez's first major musical theater recording project. Chasez is also featured as a vocalist alongside singers Cardamon Rozzi and Lily Elise. The project comes on the heels of an exciting year for both Chasez and Harry respectively, following the highly anticipated *NSYNC reunion on the Trolls Band Together soundtrack where Chasez lent his vocals on the group's first song in two decades, "Better Place," and Harry's recent work writing and producing "Take Me Back To The Party," the latest single from B-52's founding member Kate Pierson. Harry has previously worked with legends such as Madonna, Pink, Britney Spears, Diplo, Kelly Clarkson, Weezer and more. Chasez made a surprise appearance at this year's Elsie Fest and joined festival host creator Darren Criss on stage where the project was announced.Featuring a collection of 16 original new tracks, Playing With Fire first came to fruition when Harry presented Chasez the script of his late mother's (Barbara Field) theatrical adaptation of Shelley's prescient sci-fi story. Chasez was immediately intrigued with the play, and work on it immediately began, creating a heartfelt story of timely technological issues, love, responsibility, revenge, loss, and the human condition. This reimagining of the classic tale constructs a conversation between Frankenstein and his creation, The Creature, at the grave of Frankenstein's wife, Elizabeth, ten years after her death. Through dynamic interplay of dialogue and shared flashbacks of key events in both their lives, the concept album plunges into the heart of their intertwined destinies. As they confront their past actions and the devastating impact they've had on one another, Frankenstein and The Creature gradually find understanding, sympathy, and forgiveness. Chasez and Harry were drawn not only to the thought-provoking technological themes in Shelly's novel, but also to the emotional depth that Field's adaptation brought to the story. It was as if they discovered an untapped perspective on a literary classic that they could illustrate with music. This gripping story is accompanied by dark brooding songs that blend Electronic pop juxtaposed against classical music from the romantic era, forming a captivating symphony of contrasts that reflect the characters own internal conflicts. "When we first discussed creating a musical inspired by Frankenstein, obvious topics such as technology, A.G.I., monsters, immortality and death came up. However, when we began the process of writing the songs, we couldn't help but lean into topics dealing with familial relationships, love, deceit, and denial. In the end, we flipped the technological beast on its side to reveal that, in spite of all its benefits and horrors it creates, it changes nothing about our basic humanity." We present Frankenstein! The 1992 TV Movie version starring Patrick Bergin as Dr. Victor Frankenstein! Yes...the Patrick Bergin from Sleeping With the Enemy starring Julia Roberts! He was also in Patriot Games with Harrison Ford! The Monster in this version of Mary Shelly's novel is played by none other than Randy Quaid! Yep...Randy Quaid who played Cousin Eddie in the National Lampoon Vacation Films! Randy holds his own here as the Monster. Wickes also brought us a Jekyll and Hyde TV movie and a Jack the Ripper mini-series starring Michal Caine! Is this the closet screen version of Shelly's novel? No, but it is better than Kenneth Branagh's version! Join us for Frankenstein the 1992 TV movie version! Welcome to Mona Lisa Overpod, the show that asks the question "What is cyberpunk?" On each episode, hosts Ka1iban and author Lyda Morehouse dive into the genre that helped define sci-fi fiction in '80s and they break down its themes which remain relevant to our lives in the 21st century. Pull on your mirrorshades, jack into the matrix, and start your run with us today!Mary Shelley's classic tale of scientific hubris and inhuman misery has inspired countless tales of sci-fi and fantasy since its publication in 1818. But does its long list of scions include cyberpunk? At the age of 19, Shelley shared a tale with the world that evinced her era's fear of the powers of technology, while simultaneously highlighting the unfair privilege of class in England and abroad, creating a narrative that nearly every work of genre fiction can trace its roots to. If Frankenstein's not cyber punk, what else can be?In this episode, we discuss Shelley's original novel and its 1831 revision, the novel's remarks on class and the contemporary science that inspired it, Shelley's tragic upbringing, the intersection of gothic and romance, the novel's unreliable epistolic narration, the themes of evolution and de-evolution, Shelley's trans friend and LGBTQ subtext, the thematic consistency of the story's many adaptations, and the role of community and empathy in developing new life. We also talk about how the Frankenstein films altered our perception of the monster, loving every word in the English language, going five epistolary levels down, getting alchemy-pilled, not being a doctor, an 8 ft. tall undead incel, Regency Minecraft, going Dewey Cox, Team Victor vs. Team Monster, Mary Shelley's creepypasta, 3 and 1/2 breakdowns, AI play dates, Frankie with the good hair, less mummies more Draculas, fainting monsters, Batman = Frankenstein, and if Mary Shelly would like Ghost in the Shell!#RIP to Teri GarrThe new edition of Lyda's book, Ressurection Code, is out now!https://wizardstowerpress.com/books-2/books-by-lyda-morehouse/resurrection-code/Join Kaliban on Twitch weekdays at 12pm for the Cyber Lunch Hour!http://twitch.tv/justenoughtropePut Just Enough Trope merch on your body!http://justenoughtrope.threadless.comMLOP is a part of the Just Enough Trope podcast network. In 1816, a group of friends who were writers were stuck indoors in Geneva, Switzerland, and were bored. So, they created a challenge for themselves. They were to each come up with a unique ghost story. After several days of being unable to come up with a story, one of the women in the group was struck with an idea for her ghost tale. Her story became the basis of one of the most important novels in English literature, one of the greatest characters of all time, and arguably spawned an entire form of literature. Who and what you are, your personality, your style, your thoughts... That's all about to change. For one thing you are already a product on “free to use” social media. You don't really own things you think you own (We're looking at you, Steam!) Even your intellectual property is up for grabs now in ways you can't see coming. Hollywood actors are selling the rights to their digital likenesses, and meanwhile, others are stealing such rights via technological loopholes. All media exists, according to Drew, to draw you towards the advertisements… And your deepfake could be used to do just that to others. Some of these fakes are good enough to fool yourself even. Join Allan and Drew as they interview Sam Rad, a premier futurist and humanist, who freely admits that there is now an inherent tension between those two philosophies. The conversations about the governance, ethics, and security of all this new media and technology are woefully behind the curve. Many members of the TikTok generation has a 4-second attention span and require multiple simultaneous input streams at any given time to feel satisfied. Is this a deliberate attack on the Western human nervous system? Cyberattacks are certainly killing people already, why not go straight for their brains? Are the peasants coming with pitchforks and torches to destroy Frankenstein's newest monster? How about the striking dockworkers? The terrorists destroying 5G towers? Do peasants with pitchforks ever win? Ned (mistakenly called “Jason” by Allan) Ludd and the Luddites failed in a big way to stop technology from replacing their jobs in the late 1700s (mistakenly referred to as the having happened in the Victorian era by Allan) This show is peppered with others such historical and cultural references such as the cultures and economies in Second Life, Picasso's mass production of his own paintings, Rousseau's evolving concepts of property, Mary Shelly and her Frankenstein's monster, Hegel's model of “thesis, antithesis, synthesis”, the Butlerian Jihad from the “Dune” series, and William Gibson's maxim that, “The street finds its uses for things”. We're not even coping with all of this, and now we have the AI conversation thrust upon us as well… Your content is training data, and can be mimicked with uncanny accuracy as well. Check out Sam's book, “Radical Next” and her docuseries “Illicit Economies of the Shadowverse” to learn more about the positives and negatives of all of these trends in humanity. Good luck out there. Stay safe. Who you are and what you own is irretrievably altered at this point. Cybersecurity is really just “security” now. But hopefully all this mess will create the next cultural and creative Renaissance. Y'all be safe now...

On the evening of October 30th, 1938, the CBS Radio Network broadcasted Orson Welles's live adaptation of the 1897 HG Wells classic, groundbreaking sci-fi novel, The War of the Worlds, all across America. And those who paid close attention knew it was fiction. But thousands and thousands of others who didn't... literally thought the US was currently being invaded and attacked by hostile, killer aliens from Mars and fellow citizens were dying in droves. They panicked and true pandemonium ensued! For Merch and everything else Bad Magic related, head to: https://www.badmagicproductions.com

With My Gothic Dissertation, University of Iowa PhD Anna M. Williams has transformed the dreary diss into a This American Life-style podcast. Williams' witty writing and compelling audio production allow her the double move of making a critical intervention into the study of the gothic novel, while also making an entertaining and thought-provoking series for non-experts. Williams uses famed novels by authors such as Anne Radcliffe and Mary Shelly as an entry point for a critique of graduate school itself—a Medieval institution of shadowy corners, arcane rituals, and a feudal power structure. The result is a first-of-its-kind work that serves as a model for doing literary scholarship in sound. This episode of Phantom Power offers you an exclusive preview of My Gothic Dissertation. Horror is a genre of literature, film, and television that is meant to scare, startle, shock, and even repulse audiences. The key focus of a horror novel, horror film, or horror TV show is to elicit a sense of dread in the reader through frightening images, themes, and situations. In the horror genre, story and characters are just as important as mood and atmosphere. A horror story often shocks and provokes with its exploration of the unknown. The horror genre in literature dates back to Ancient Greece and Ancient Rome, where horror stories explored themes related to death, demons, evil spirits, and the afterlife. Examples include the ancient Greek tragedy Hippolytus by Euripides, a gruesome story about how jealousy and a lack of empathy can lead to tragedy; and Parallel Lives by Plutarch, a series of biographies highlighting the many moral failures of man. The gothic novel, a genre of horror that focuses specifically on death, originated in the eighteenth century and is exemplified by the author Edgar Allan Poe. Horror literature in the nineteenth century and twentieth centuries often focused on tales involving occult ideas, like Mary Shelly's Frankenstein (1818) or Bram Stoker's Dracula (1897). Modern horror novels have expanded the genre to include new elements and contemporary themes, like serial killers and slasher stories—Stephen King's The Shining (1977) is a perfect example—as well as genre mashups that combine horror with historical fantasy, and modern interpretations of fantastical creatures, like ghosts, vampires, werewolves, and witches.

On the day after Halloween, it occurred to me that what we are seeing on the Left is analogous to the story of Mary Shelly's, “Frankenstein.” The Left has created their own monster and now it's been set loose and it's no longer under control. It's destroying everything in it's wake. That monster is the hate and vitriol associated with today's modern-day Leftist ideology, rooted in Wokeism and DEI. First we open with DHS Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, the walking male member with eyebrows. This joker should have been impeached a long time ago for dereliction of duty and for allowing harm and destruction to our nation and it's citizens as a result. He has a back and forth with Senator Josh Hawley (R-MO) over current border practices and anti-Semitisim within DHS. On the campus of Cornell University, police have arrested one person who posted horrible threats to Jewish students on their forum. Patrick Dai worked as a “safety officer” at Cornell. You cannot make this up! White House spokesperson John Kirby was asked if the rise in anti-Semitism is akin to domestic terrorism. He was unable to confirm that at this time. It's amazing how there are so many group the FBI has designated as domestic terrorists, like Trump supporters and parents who get vocal at school board meetings, but threatening to kill Jews and they aren't sure. Victor Davis Hanson comments on how its taken three weeks to get just a few college presidents to denounce the bigotry and hate parading on their own campuses. But, let's face it, this monster isn't going away anytime soon. They'd have to admit how wrong they were in dismantling classic education in favor of their woke, social-justice, DEI programming that has allowed the hatred to be grown and sown on campus. Maybe, if we stopped sending our kids to those schools for a couple of years, maybe that would make them wake-up? But I doubt we will see that. Tulsi Gabbard sees the same monster roaming the halls of Congress that has arisen across college campuses. The Hamas Squad is an example of the same manifestation of hate and bigotry. At it's heart, their philosophy is deeply anti-American. Finally, in case you still were in doubt about Hamas, a spokesman just stated they will never stop until Israel and the Jewish people are no more. They relish in spilling the blood of their own people in order to accomplish genocide. Take a moment to rate and review the show and then share the episode on social media. PUBLIC VERSION. Filmmaker Bomani J. Story (THE ANGRY BLACK GIRL AND HER MONSTER - currently in US theaters) joins Adam, Joe, and Arwen in the ArieScope Studio to discuss his career journey so far. From growing up loving movies but having no idea that a career behind the camera was a real possibility for his future… to attending a 2 year community college where a public speaking class would become one of the most important classes he'd ever take… to deciding to pursue his true dream of making movies and going on to graduate from USC film school… to making short film after short film after short film… to writing a short as a favor to a friend who needed something to direct as their film school thesis and then watching as that friend got signed by a manager off of the short and then immediately went on to direct their first feature… to writing THE ANGRY BLACK GIRL AND HER MONSTER (Bomani's modern take on Mary Shelly's classic FRANKENSTEIN novel) and having everyone in town pass on making it… to going on to work as an assistant editor at Crypt TV where it just so happened that his ANGRY BLACK GIRL script was simultaneously being considered as a possible Crypt TV original feature film… to quickly shooting a 2 minute long scene from a completely different script in order to be considered seriously as the director of ANGRY BLACK GIRL… Bomani is the perfect example of someone breaking in and making big things happen today. Welcome back to Film Haven Reviews! This week marks the conclusion of my "Killer Creations" theme and what better way to close out than with Mary Shelley's Frankenstein!?This muddled Kenneth Branagh directed adaptation is a mixed bag of bad acting, weird choices, and some incredible set/production design that caused me to have an enjoyable experience, if not a slightly disappointed one considering I had high expectations for the only true book to film adaption of the Gothic Sci-fi classic. I gave it a 7/10 because while Kenneth Branagh obviously put alot of heart into the production and some elements truly worked, the strange departures from the book weigh down the potentially iconic staying power this film could have achieved. FrankensteinFrankenstein Full chapter Introduction This novel is recognized as the first work of science fiction. The main character in the story is a young scientist named Frankenstein. In an obsessive project to create life, he frequents mortuaries, tombs, and slaughterhouses. From the parts of various corpses, he pieces together an eight-foot-tall monster and brings it to life. But, when the monster is animated, Frankenstein is frightened by its hideous face, and he flees. An ominous day of fear and trepidation is quickly followed by a series of appalling events. The reek of death hangs on every page of the book. Overview | Chapter 1Hi, welcome to Bookey. Today we will unlock the world's first science fiction novel, Frankenstein; or, The Modern Prometheus. In reality, looking at this novel through modern eyes, the science is imprecise. So, why does it still stand as the first work of science fiction? This is primarily due to the novel's central premise, the scientific attempt to unlock the secrets of life through experiment, leading to the creation of artificial humans. This scenario established a fundamental paradigm for later science fiction stories. These required a science-based fantasy setting and needed to include aspects such as technological devices, unknown civilizations, or scientific events. All these elements have subsequently become common features of the genre. Critical thinking about technology is also at the core of the novel. This type of thought has since become a key theme in science fiction. In Frankenstein, Shelly tells us that going too far with science and pursuing enquiry to the point of obsession can lead to disaster. Frankenstein, the scientist, the novel's protagonist, crosses the bridge between life and death, commanding the ability to create life. However, he lacks the strength of character to take responsibility for the life he has created. The message is that when out of control, free of the constraint, and of ethical and moral considerations, technology can eventually become a sharpened blade that harms both the scientist and humanity as a whole. Frankenstein is, of course, above all more a prophecy than a parable. Scientific and technological developments are Mary Shelly's concern. She speculates regarding science's development and reflects on the tension between technological capacity and human morality. Even after 200 years, her thoughts continue to serve as a warning today. The story has a timeless charm, and merits repeated reading. We will consider the effect of the novel from three viewpoints: Part One: The plot Part Two: The novel's artistic features Part Three: Probing the book's thematic complexity

Every October, we creep into the scary season on Litreading, digging deep into the trove of classic horror tales from around the world. Some of the most frightening stories of all time were penned more than 100 years ago by authors like Mary Shelly and Edgar Allen Poe. One of the greats of the early 20th century was H.P. Lovecraft, and this is one of his earliest tales. During H. P. Lovecraft's short life (he died at age 46), he barely eked out an existence by ghostwriting and editing the work of others. Yet, as he struggled financially, he penned in obscurity what would soon be seen as some of the greatest gothic horror stories of all time. Learn more about your ad choices.
