Recorded in November of 2017, Kristi Lee interviewed Ron Sexton, aka Donnie Baker on her former podcast Kristi Lee Interrupted. (Her podcast is still in directories if you'd like to go back and hear more interviews!) Listen as she talks one on one with Ron about his beginnings in radio and comedy. ---- I hate to break this to some of you but Donnie Baker isn't real. There I said it! He is however, the brainchild of the talented stand up comic and professional broadcaster, Ron Sexton. On the podcast we find out how Ron began his career. He didn't just jump into calling The Bob and Tom Show with character voices. He got a start very early in middle school doing sports reports for the Franklin Central High School radio station in Indianapolis. He knew pretty quickly that radio was something he wanted to pursue. Ron continued to follow his passion while attending Butler University mainly doing play by play and sports reporting. Which led him to covering sports for an Indianapolis TV station. He quickly learned that TV wasn't his thing and took a job with the NFL's Indianapolis Colts. It would be an executive position in the broadcast department complete with a company car and steady employment. His suit wearing days were numbered though when he was approached by Indy sports legend Mark Patrick. Mark offered Ron a full time job that would put him back “on the air” for Fox Sports Radio. A show that ended up being ahead of its time featuring a heavy dose of comedy over hard hitting sports. After a 3 year run the program ended and that's when Ron started to call into The Bob and Tom Show. His impressions are many, Tony Soprano, Charles Barkley, Jim Rome, Morgan Freeman the list goes on and on. Along with these famous impressions Ron has created the long running characters, Kenny Tarmac, Floyd the Trucker and of course Donnie Baker. We talk about how Donnie evolved on the show, the creation of his band the Pork Pistols, and his new found fame on the internet. My favorite segment is when we talk about comedic heroes. Especially the late great Tim Wilson! Ron has some special memories to share about this wonderful comedian. (many in Tim's voice which Ron has DOWN). Things you also learn on this episode: Ron is an excellent high school baseball coach. He LOVES music and would like to open for a famous rock star! And yes, he has a hidden talent! All you have to do is listen to find out. State Law! Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

SS102fm re-broadcasts an RTE interview by the late Marian Finucane with Mark Patrick Hederman OSB from Glenstal Abbey which was originally broadcast by RTE in June 2019. Marian interviews Dom Mark about his new book "Living the Mystery: What lies between Science and Religion" which is published by Columba Books. The Irish Catholic newspapers review of the book was published on 1 August 2019."Life is a mystery quite beyond the comprehension of our normal ways of understanding. Having lived as a Benedictine monk for over fifty years, Mark Patrick Hederman has learned how to engage with mystery and sets out to explain how to bring a new sense of the sacred into your life.Despite clamorous reports to the contrary, he argues that religion is alive and well in our world. In this fascinating book he contends that most of us are religious and can’t help being religious. Being human means being ‘religious’, otherwise we would die of despair. Along with his, he touches on the inaccurate idea that science and religion are opposing forces and focuses on the fact that the arts are the only way we can convey the sacred to today’s disbelieving world. Through this exploration, Hederman suggests that a mytho-poetic language could provide a ‘middle voice,’ a ‘third language’ that bridges that gap between science and religion in our society."

Sometime in the next three to six months, Syngenta AG, a Swiss-based agribusiness company, is expecting to welcome a clan of ambitious offspring. Months, even years in the making, these fruit from a forward-looking group are born from a cross-functional team—one tasked with helping the $13.5 billion enterprise correctly measure its expansive sustainability initiatives. To be clear, the aforementioned "offspring" are new metrics, the output of an ambitious metrics "refresh" triggered in part by the firm's determination to routinely evaluate the numbers intended to provide Syngenta management as well stakeholders with a clear-eyed view of its sustainability efforts. "It's all good and well establishing a new metric, but if you can't measure and monitor it, then it has no value in any shape or form," explains Syngenta CFO Mark Patrick, who first mentioned the sustainability "refresh" when asked about metrics that had become increasingly top-of-mind for finance—but were clearly "nonfinancial" or beyond the realm of traditional finance. While Patrick said that he was reluctant to discuss the yet-to-be-released metrics, he suggests that when it comes to finance, the innovation is not what the metrics measure but how they came to be—and how Patrick's finance team operated as part of a larger cross-functional effort where finance partnered with the sustainability group and the company at large. "We're actually the custodians of value, and it's about how do we work with those within those cross-functional teams to ensure that we're moving down the right path and investing in the things that are going to give us the greatest chance for success tomorrow. And this has to be a relationship built on trust," he explains. This trust, according to Patrick, is now being enriched by finance as it seeks to make metrics more visible across the organization and allow individual employees to measure how their work is bringing benefits to the company and contributing to its success. I hate to break this to some of you but Donnie Baker isn’t real. There I said it! He is however, the brainchild of the talented stand up comic and professional broadcaster, Ron Sexton. On the podcast we find out how Ron began his career. He didn’t just jump into calling The Bob and Tom Show with character voices. He quickly learned that TV wasn’t his thing and took a job with the NFL’s Indianapolis Colts. After a 3 year run the program ended and that’s when Ron started to call into The Bob and Tom Show. (many in Tim’s voice which Ron has DOWN). Things you also learn on this episode: Ron is an excellent high school baseball coach. He LOVES music and would like to open for a famous rock star! And yes, he has a hidden talent! All you have to do is listen to find out. State Law! Info: donniebaker.com

Mark Patrick Hederman reflects on Pentecost Sunday and the Holy Spirit - 27th May 2012 - SS102fm

Come & See Inspirations

Play Episode Listen Later May 26, 2012 54:29

Pentecost is the festival when Christians celebrate the gift of the Holy Spirit. It is celebrated on the Sunday 50 days after Easter (the name comes from the Greek pentekoste, "fiftieth"). Pentecost is regarded as the birthday of the Christian church, and the start of the church's mission to the world. Ten days after Jesus ascended into heaven, the twelve apostles, Jesus' mother and family, and many other of His disciples gathered together in Jerusalem for the Jewish harvest festival that was celebrated on the fiftieth day after Passover. While they were indoors praying, a sound like that of a rushing wind filled the house and tongues of fire descended and rested over each of their heads. This was the outpouring of the Holy Spirit on human flesh promised by God through the prophet Joel. The disciples were suddenly empowered to proclaim the gospel of the risen Christ. They went out into the streets of Jerusalem and began preaching to the crowds gathered for the festival. Not only did the disciples preach with boldness and vigor, but by a miracle of the Holy Spirit they spoke in the native languages of the people present, many who had come from all corners of the Roman Empire. This created a sensation. The apostle Peter seized the moment and addressed the crowd, preaching to them about Jesus' death and resurrection for the forgiveness of sins. The result was that about three thousand converts were baptized that day. (You can read the Biblical account of Pentecost in Acts 2:1-41). On this weeks programme we are joined by Patrick Hederman OSB who is the abbot of Glenstal Abbey to reflect on the feast. Dom Patrick takes us back to the Upper Room where the disciples and Mary were sheltering in fear. When the Spirit arrived, it went to each of them as a tongue of fire over their head and for each of us today, the Holy Spirit is hovering over us asking us for our permission to land and enter into our hearts and lives. The Holy Spirit is often the most ignored person of the Trinity. It was necessary for Jesus to leave us, despite the fact that the disciples wanted to cling on to his human presence so that the Holy Spirit, the manifestation of the Divine Love could come to us. But it was not as if the Spirit was never there before, it was the Holy Spirit who brooded over the waters at Creation, it was the Holy Spirit who organised Christs arrival on earth and prepared the womb of Mary at the Annunciation and the Holy Spirit who descended on Jesus at his baptism in the Jordan. It is almost as if the Holy Spirit was the director of the play in which Christ had the main part. We have to really believe that the Spirit is in our hearts so that when we pray or want to pray, we don't have to make things us but rather we have to lower ourselves down into the conversation of love of the Trinity which are occurring all the time in our hearts so we can partake in the conversation of love. Pentecost isn't just something that happened 2000 years ago. It is still happening today, the Spirit came on the disciples and then drove them out into the streets of Jerusalem and across the world to spread the message of the love of God. Are we listening personally to the Spirit, as a community are we in dialogue to discern what the Spirit is calling us as a community to do and finally are we open to going out and sharing with the world what the Spirit has shared with us all.
