Australia's Hoodoo Gurus have spent the last 40 years blending Troggs'-inspired garage rock with Beatles' soaked melodies done with a New York Dolls' sneer. The band were darlings of college radio during the eighties, and even scored a #1 Modern Rock hit with “Come Anytime,” in 1989. During the pandemic, the guys found themselves on a creative streak and the result is their 10th-long player, Chariot of the Gods, and it's some of the best work they've ever done. We chat with frontman Dave Faulkner about why the large gap between albums, how a drunken night inspired one of the new songs, and the difficulty scheduling a tour during the pandemic.
The Hoodoo Gurus are one of Australia's favourites coming out of the pub scene. It was such a fertile era, bands like Midnight Oil, Cold Chisel, Mental As Anything and The Angels ruled the 'sticky floors' of Australia. In their 40th (well.. 41st) year, the Gurus have released their new album "Chariot of the Gods" coming with some wicked tracks - their farewell to Donald Trump "Hung Out to Dry" was one of the most notable. I got to visit them in the studio while recording in Surry Hills and in the podcast you'll hear about some of the history of that studio. Also the limitations, when recording during covid. Dave opens up on the music that influenced him, when growing up and what is on the Gurus' Rider after all these years. Their tour may be postponed at this stage, but we can't wait to see the Hoodoo Gurus back on the road with the Dandy Warhols celebrating 40 years. This is Dave Faulkner, on The Rider with Becko

DAVE FAULKNER - Hoodoo GurusFaulkner is a singer-songwriter, guitarist and keyboardist; he has performed with several bands. In 1981, Baker and Faulkner founded Hoodoo Gurus in Sydney with Roddy Radalj and Kimble Rendall: their first single was "Leilani". He wrote the band's best known single, 1987 hit "What's My Scene?",which reached No. 3 on the National charts. Hoodoo Gurus, the band enjoyed success in many countries without having a major international hit. They released eight original albums and several compilations, and officially split in 1998, but reformed in 2003. Faulkner also wrote original music for films Broken Highway (1993) and The Sum of Us (1994) His song for Hoodoo Gurus "Come Anytime” (June 1989) is the theme song to the Australian television show Thank God You're Here (2006). The Gurus reworked their hit, "What's My Scene?" as "That's My Team" as a promotional theme for the National Rugby League (NRL). Faulkner is a well-known, long-time supporter of NRL team the Cronulla Sharks and appeared in one of their jerseys for the "That's My Team" promotional song video (a lyrics rewrite of "What's My Scene?").
