204: You Need Stress to Build Resilience - Deborah Gilboa

Work From The Inside Out

Resilience expert Deborah Gilboa, MD, aka “Dr. G,” works with families, organizations, and businesses to turn stress into an advantage. Known for her contagious humor, Dr. G works with people across generations to rewire their attitudes and beliefs to create resilience through personal accountability and a completely different approach to adversity. She is the author of the recently released book From Stressed to Resilient: The Guide to Handle More and Feel It Less. Dr. G is a board-certified attending family physician at a community health center whose practice includes making house calls. As a child, Dr. G suffered from seizures. When asked, “What do you want to be when you grow up?” her answer was a pediatric neurosurgeon since she had a female doctor in that specialty who she liked. Dr. G changed her mind, when in 9th grade biology lab, she had to dissect a fetal pig. Around that time she discovered the fun of theater, finding social acceptance and learning that people can have careers in theater. She decided to study theater in college. After earning her BFA in stage management, Dr. G worked in theater for six years, including two years at Second City, the famous improv company in Chicago. She also volunteered as an emergency medical technician and got certified as a paramedic. At 26, Dr. G decided to apply to medical school, but she needed two years of pre-requisite coursework to qualify. She mapped out a plan to ensure she could make it happen. Dr. G had also worked at Deaf West Theater in Los Angeles, founded by the deaf actress Marlee Matlin. She had learned some American Sign Language (ASL) and a lot about deaf culture. Dr. G heard that ASL interpreters were needed in health care, so she enrolled in ASL classes and began to work as an ASL interpreter while she prepared for medical school. Today, Dr. G practices family medicine on a part-time basis and speaks regularly to audiences in every sector on a variety of topics pertaining to resilience, mental health, and effective communication. She says, “Resilience is not given… it is choice and action.” In this week's Work From The Inside Out podcast, learn more about Dr. G's journey: Dr. G's message is straightforward and essential: Do stress better. Be resilient.  She appears regularly on TODAY, Good Morning America, and The Doctors. Her work is featured frequently in the Washington Post, The New York Times, Forbes Magazine, and many other digital and print outlets. Over the past several decades, Paul Raci grew frustrated with his screen career. He was convinced he had more to offer as an actor than the bit parts and one-off roles that make up his IMDB credits. So Raci largely channeled those creative efforts into stage productions at the Deaf West Theater and his heavy metal bands. Now, the rest of us are getting to know Raci and his work.

Ben Stanton is a lighting designer for theater, concerts, dance, installations, and events. He is a three-time Tony Award nominee as well as an Obie, Lortel, IRNE, and Ovation Award winner. Recent Broadway credits include The Rose Tattoo, Derren Brown: Secret, Regina Spektor: Live On Broadway, Ayad Akhtar’s Junk, the revival of Six Degrees of Separation, Deaf West Theater’s revival of Spring Awakening, Fully Committed, and Fun Home. He has designed concerts and tours for recording artists including Beirut, Melanie Martinez, Regina Spektor, Sufjan Stevens, and St. Vincent. He serves as the resident lighting director for Skylight Modern, and he’s the founder and principal designer at Stanton Collaborative, a group that specializes in bringing a theatrical aesthetic to corporate events, concerts, and installations.  Ben took time out from his crazy schedule of lighting like 147 shows and being a new Dad to help me understand how lighting affects a show and . . . How being trained as a drummer makes him a better lighting designer. How guessing is involved in lighting design. Does he like how shows are incorporating more and more projections?  (An interesting perspective considering his wife is the super talented projection designer Lucy Mackinnon, who also was on Spring.) What LEDs are doing to Broadway and is that a good thing or a bad thing? What he wants all Broadway producers to know about lighting design. How life for choreographers in 2015 is different than in 1995. Dale and Scott were so thrilled to be invited back onboard an RSVP Vacation's cruise--our second this year! This time, we sailed from Seattle to the great state of Alaska with 2,000 of our new best friends, mostly gays, a handful of lesbians, a few transsexuals, and a smattering of breeders, who all seemed to have a blast in this most breath-taking corner of our country. While sailing toward Juneau, we taped this episode in front of a live studio audience in the Queen's Lounge on the great Holland America Oosterdam. Our guests include two beautiful men, a real-life couple, actors and singer Michael Arden, who currently plays Patrick on FX's Anger Management, and Andy Mientus who is best known as Kyle on NBC's Smash. We talked about their hectic lives working on television, creating their cabaret show, working with the Deaf West Theater, thoughts on returning to Broadway, and how they tend to work on their harmonies instead of getting down and dirty. A truly talented and special couple, you'll dig Michael and Andy, and enjoy the inside, behind-the-scenes info...including whether or not "Kyle" and Andy saw that car coming! Plus, the boys were such good sports...they played our Slightly Dirty Gay Password game with two members of our audience, and as usual, hilarity ensued, and everyone walked away with great gift bags from our friends at CockyBoys! This is Part 1. You can get Part 2 when it's released on Thursday, August 1. Plus, take a look at our daily cruise log, where Dale & Scott share with you everything they did on the Alaska cruise last week, including photos and a few videos!
