Send us a Text Message.Tom Jacobson swung into the Playwright's Spotlight in the midst of his coinciding plays The Bauhaus Project and Crevasse to discuss the correlation to both of the pieces and the subject matter of fascism and anti-Semitism in Nazi Germany. While discussing the historical influence of the Bauhaus, we explore previews and changes within coinciding pieces, writing trilogies and their process and presentation, standalones within trilogies, jumping timelines in historical works, balancing historic events and relationships, and taking creative license. We also discuss research, outlining, and when to start writing, breaking down structure, layering characters with and for the actor, table work and the role of the playwright, doubling and tripling up actors, writing complex sets with simplicity, stage magic on the play, and the benefits of academia as well as relationships and how they can help land productions. It's a wonderful conversation with a few technical hiccups that you might find entertaining, but you'll walk away with some education in history in addition to some insight in the craft of playwriting. As always... Enjoy!Tom Jacobson has penned more than 50 plays and has had more than 100 productions of his works performed around the world. His play The Twentieth-Century Way premiered at The Theatre @ Boston Court and the New York International Fringe Festival garnering five Ovation Award nominations, four Los Angeles Drama Critics' Circle nominations, one GLAAD Award nomination, a Fringe Festival Award for Outstanding Production of a Play, a PEN Center Award for Drama and then moved Off Broadway to Rattlestick Playwrights Theatre. He has been a co-literary manager of The Theatre @ Boston Court, a founding member of Playwrights Ink, and a board member of Cornerstone Theater Company and The Theatre @ Boston Court. His most recent play The Bauhaus Project opened at the Atwater Village Theatre and will be running simultaneously with his play Crevasse at the The Victory Theatre here in the Los Angeles area. Robby Fischer is the owner of Dogtown Studio located in Grand Rapids, Michigan. He is a staple in the music scene in GR and has been a honored recipient of an Ovation Award given out by the Michigan Music Alliance for Dogtown Studio's positive contribution to the local music community. Robby is also one of my best friends and I consider him to be a close partner in creativity. (It's like “partners in crime”… but with creativity… get it? anyways…) Whenever I have new ideas or thoughts that I'm working through, he's one of the people I bounce stuff off of and I have so much appreciation on his positive and energetic outlook on creative work. As someone who has the tendency to overthink or can be overwhelmed with negative thoughts about my work, it is crucial that I have friends like Robby around. In this special episode, we chat about a really interesting concept regarding familiar and unfamiliar. What makes something “good”? and what do we really mean when we say something is “bad”? Outside of running a studio business and winning prestigious community awards, Robby is a musician at the core. I also got to hear about his latest music project called “Unsummer Club” and learned about his thought process on how it came about. Enjoy the episode!

I always find something to learn in an episode of Playwright's Spotlight. However, Bernardo Cubria's insight to playwriting was nonstop. Every minute turned another corner of knowledge. His approach and insight to playwriting was intimidating that I'm not sure I could keep up - from a naivety to submitting plays that could lead to success to paying for opportunities to extracting knowledge from workshops. Bernardo shares his steps from completing the first draft, what consists of smart, intelligent feedback, Liz Lerman's critical approach to feedback, and hitting the flow state of creativity. We also tackle telling the best story, staying the course, how to approach rewrites, and the benefits of Clown School as well as "staying in the shit," not to mention compensation outside of money and what makes a brilliant director. It's only a small sample of topics that could have gone for much longer. As with playwriting, I encourage you to stay the course and listen to the entirety of this episode. You won't walk away empty handed, or headed, and will hopefully be a much better playwright by the episode's end. Either way, I hope you enjoy my conversation with Bernardo as much as I did. His energy and humor is contagious. Enjoy!!! Bernardo Cubría is a Mexican playwright and screenwriter based in Los Angeles. He is the winner of the 2021 Smith Prize for Political Theatre. His play, The Play You Want won the 2020 BETC Generations Award and was also a finalist for the 2020 Ingenio Play Festival. His play The Giant Void in my Soul was nominated for Best Playwright at the 2018 Ovation Awards, Los Angeles Drama critics Circle Awards, and The Stage Raw Awards. His play Neighbors: A Fair Trade Agreement will be receiving it's world premier at INTAR in NYC in the fall of 2017. It was a Semi-Finalist for the O'Neil in 2017, and his play The Judgment of Fools has received three critically acclaimed production in NYC, LA, and Houston, TX. Hello World! Welcome back to Let's Talk...Audio. Remember to join us on https://discord.gg/7RfWWYSb (Discord)! The interview starts off discussing the stereotype of the grumpy sound engineer, and where it might have come from. After some thoughts on stereotypes, they attempted a proper introduction for Gilly Moon. She is an audio engineer and sound designer based in Los Angeles, CA. She holds her MFA in Sound Design from California Institute of the Arts, where she did sound design for theater, themed entertainment, film, animation and spatial audio. After graduating in 2016, her wide range of interests led her to doing a lot of work for themed entertainment attractions, such as Halloween Horror Nights and San Diego Comic Con. In 2018, Gilly and her co-sound designer won an Ovation Award for Excellence in Sound Design for Rogue Artist Ensemble's "Kaidan: Walls Grow Thin," an immersive Japanese horror production that spanned three floors of a warehouse. Gilly currently works as a Broadcast recording Technician for NPR. Tangela asks Gilly about the general advice in the industry about niching down. "I find that there are a good number of people that do not do that, and you are one of them! ... Was that on purpose? ... How'd that come to be?" After some discussion about each of their academic and career histories, they concluded that while a person's career can seem to lack a defined niche, oftentimes there's a common thread that ties things together. Tangela asks Gilly how she developed an interest in audio. That sparked an involved discussion about both their backgrounds in theater. From there they move on to a discussion about resources for training your ear to be a better audio engineer. After discussing podcast format, Tangela makes the case that the podcast industry still has a lot of growing room in comparison to other industries like cinema and gaming. From there they spend some time discussing the accessibility of recording and the different pros and cons of Apple products. Gilly wrote a https://soundgirls.org/sound-guys-how-bias-is-transmitted-through-implicit-and-explicit-language/ (blog post for Sound Girls a while ago about language and biases in audio) that Tangela wanted to dig into. They cover a variety of specific examples of biased language before getting around to the question of, is there "an end point to trying to transform the audio world ... without it just turning into ... a clutter bucket of tomfoolery ... ?" Gilly explains the point of Diversity Equity and Inclusion initiatives, concluding with "I don't think there's an end goal, I think we're always gonna be looking at our group and being like, 'what does it look like right now, ok how can I make it better?' And I think that's kinda fun." Tangela wonders what diversity means outside of metropolitan areas. After riffing on that, they tackle the idea of "minorities are expected to take on the work of diversifying a predominantly white place often," in Gilly's words. Tangela points out to Gilly that a lot of her questions are meant to be open ended and don't necessitate an answer in this moment. The point of the her questions tends to be "are we thinking about it? ... if we don't have an answer, why don't we have an answer, and why haven't we thought about it?" Tangela: "I think there is a time and a place for everything, and sometimes it is neither the time nor the place nor the person ... You gotta find

Today's podcast episode carries a message that I KNOW you'll relate to from an actress, you'll probably recognize. A lot of people think that actors with BIG Network TV credits have it easy. And don't get me wrong, credits can help – but even Viola Davis and Olivia Colman worry about where they're gonna get their next job. Sarah Utterback had an epic Recurring Role as Nurse Olivia on Grey's Anatomy – 19 episodes in Shondaland… so you'd think she'd hit the tipping point. She was working & making opportunities for herself – she's one of the founding members of Los Angeles' critically-acclaimed, Ovation Award-winning IAMA Theatre Company.  When you meet Sarah you'll fall in love with her (just like I did) – she's got a warm voice and easy smile – you could easily see her take any of Jessica Chastain's roles or play Kristen Bell's sister on The Good Place. But when we met, Sarah was in THE BAD PLACE. …she didn't have an agent… …she was jaded about the bizniz… …and in her own words, she was “letting some shadowy stories” run the show… In today's episode of the podcast she tells you first-hand how there's a perversely satisfying fast-food feel-good self-righteousness when you judge the bizniz and yourself. This episode doesn't sugarcoat it: Icky, shadowy stuff is gonna come up, AND you have a choice. You can see those feelings as: permission to back off from your purpose and stop showing up OR an opportunity to slow down and DO THE WORK to reveal the truth of who you are so you can attract the attention you're ready for. Sarah did the work and it worked.  GOOD SPOILER ALERT Sarah got 35 OFFERS for representation – plus 10 more reps said "If after all your meetings, you're still looking, please reach out.”   CONNECT WITH SARAH Instagram https://www.instagram.com/misssarahutterback/ https://www.instagram.com/iamatheatre Website https://www.iamatheatre.com IMDb https://www.imdb.com/name/nm1925959/   Subscribe To The Podcast https://plinkhq.com/i/1570747490?to=page   Watch The Uncut Behind-the-scenes Video Of This Episode On Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/user/brianpatacca   Need New Representation? On this week's episode Elizabeth is excited to introduce her dear friend, David Guerra, who quickly takes the reins and teaches her more about Tennessee Williams, the conquest of Mexico City, and what it means to get deeply vulnerable about family.   Our guest David is an award winning actor, director, teacher and performing artist. He was born and raised in Los Angeles and has worked and collaborated with a lot of respected institutions within Southern California, including the Center Theatre Group, the Geffen Playhouse, and the experimental physical theatre company that is Theatre Movement Bazaar (TMB). With TMB David has won Ovation Awards, traveled to the Edinburgh Fringe Festival with multiple productions, as well as toured in several cities in China. As a teaching artist, David intentionally turns every classroom into a theatre space and creates a level playing field for both the arts and academia.   While exploring The Christus of Guadalajara by Tennessee Williams, Elizabeth and David explore the themes of religion, sacrifice, and, as David puts it, the subtext of death. Come with us to investigate how the poem picks up speed, asks us to reflect on mortality, and encourages us to pay respect to our mothers.   Come listen to David share the many lenses through which he views this poem and how he believes art seeks us.   “This is the thing Elizabeth, you know, the art?... in a way instead of you seeking it seeks you. Well, I don't know if it fell in my lap... but I'm serious. I don't think I sought it.” - David Guerra   Timestamps: 00:00:47 Guest Introduction 00:03:14 Poem Reading (David) 00:05:55 Author Info 00:08:44 David's Relationship to the Poem 00:23:29 Pause / Poem Reading (Elizabeth) 00:35:00 Reflection & Offering Poem & Links: The Christus of Guadalajara by Tennessee Williams (© 1956) Theatre Movement Bazaar Celebration (TMB Digital Project)   I.O.P. In this episode of Brian Breaks Character, Showrunner, Creator, and Actor, Paul Witten gives us a MASTERCLASS in putting yourself out there! I brought him on the show so you can see how relentless creativity (and not taking NO for answer) reallllllly pays off!  Paul is the creator and showrunner of Dropping the Soap starring Jane Lynch. And Jane WON the Emmy Award for her role on his show.  But it wasn't all rainbows, lollipops, and big-name comedians… Paul heard NO a lot, but instead of letting the NOs bring him down, he transformed them into finding the right community of artists and supporters for his projects.  What I love about Paul (and I know you will too!) is that he leads with kindness. In this episode, Paul explains how he surrounded himself with like-minded individuals who wanted to get on board with his project because of HIS story and then was able to make his show happen WITHOUT ONE OUNCE OF CROWDFUNDING. He tells us how there are no rules in this business (you there in the back row, did you hear that?!?) and why vulnerability is the key to getting people to believe in (and invest in!) your projects. And beyond all that, Paul is a joy to talk to and I can't wait to introduce you to him. Paul is an inspiration and I hope that you learn as much as I did from this episode.TAKEAWAYS   The power of NO and what you can learn from it Tell your personal stories and allow yourself to be vulnerable - That is how to get someone to be a part of your project Know your boundaries as an artist and what you need to protect and take care of yourself There are no rules Paul Witten is an actor/writer/producer. He recently had the pleasure of shooting “The Comeback Trail”, a feature film working alongside Robert DeNiro, Tommy Lee Jones, Morgan Freeman and Zach Braff, as well as a recent guest spot on Brooklyn 99. He also had a recurring role in the multiple award winning Apple+ series “The Morning Show”, with Jennifer Aniston. Additionally, Paul created, co-wrote and stars opposite Jane Lynch in the Emmy winning comedy series, "Dropping The Soap", currently available on Amazon. Paul's most recent short film, “A Play”, which he produced, co-wrote and stars in, is currently running the festival circuit having won numerous festival awards. Paul also just penned a half hour comedy pilot, “You Are Here”, which he will begin pitching soon. Favorite Los Angeles theatre credits include; "The Goat Or, Who Is Sylvia" (Best Actor nominee, Ovation Awards), "The Woman In Black" (Best Actor nominee; LA Drama Critics Circle and Ovation Awards/ LA premiere); "The Brothers Karamazov" (Best Ensemble LA Drama Critics Circle, LA premiere).    Thank you for tuning in to this episode of Brian Breaks Character!   If you loved this episode, please subscribe and leave an honest review.
