LA Is Burning, and the Right Is Furious—About Sign Language InterpretersMother Jones, By Julia Me'traux, on January 13, 2025https://www.motherjones.com/politics/2025/01/california-fires-asl-sign-language-woke/ The discussion highlights California's ongoing devastation from wildfires, where 12,000 structures have been destroyed, tens of thousands evacuated, and numerous lives, both human and animal, lost. Yet, instead of focusing on this tragedy, right-wing figures like Charlie Kirk and Christopher Rufo criticize sign language interpreters during emergency broadcasts, labeling them as “woke.” The panel agrees this rhetoric is part of a larger conservative effort to dehumanize marginalized groups, including the disabled. The conversation underscores how such attacks aim to strip minorities of visibility and support while sowing division. The panelists emphasized the importance of American Sign Language (ASL) as a complete, nuanced language essential for the Deaf community. They condemn the right's targeting of interpreters, likening it to fascist tactics used historically to vilify and control minority groups. This dehumanization fosters tribalism, allowing conservatives to rally followers around a shared hatred of the “other.”The Non-Prophets, Episode 24.04.1 featuring Jimmy Jr. , Jonathan Roudabush, and AJBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-non-prophets--3254964/support.

At one point in history, the various tribes in the Plains region developed a shared universal language. But it didn't rely on the spoken word. Plains Indian Sign Language (PISL), or Hand Talk, was a complex means of communication that spread over a large swatch of North America. It was a way for deaf people to communicate before the invention of American Sign Language (ASL). Colonial intrusion and assimilation policies caused the number of PISL practitioners to drop off drastically. Now, a handful of PISL speakers are trying to revitalize this unique language. GUESTS Dr. Lanny Real Bird (Apsáalooke), educator, consultant, and Native language advocate Floyd Favel (Plains Cree from Poundmaker Cree Nation), theater artist, educator, knowledge keeper, and writer Marvin Weatherwax Sr. (Blackfeet), language and history educator at Blackfeet Community College

You can read a transcript for this episode here.Think back to your favorite childhood TV show—was it “Blue's Clues”? “Little Bear”? “Winnie the Pooh”? Animated TV shows are important for kids because they can teach them to read, draw, spell, and talk. Plus, the ways these shows tell stories and create colorful, fictitious worlds can broaden children's knowledge and capacity to imagine. But children's shows aren't accessible to all deaf children, which means they could miss out on a common learning experience. Among other things, that can set kids back in learning both American Sign Language (ASL) and English language skills during their formative early childhood years.Melissa Malzkuhn is third-generation Deaf and the founder and director of the Motion Light Lab at Gallaudet University in Washington, D.C. Her lab is creating ASL-focused children's media that is made by and for the Deaf community, using motion capture technology, avatars, animation, and signing storytellers. She talks with Science Friday guest host Arielle Duhaime-Ross about ASL access in childhood, the science of learning, and how she's creating “Here Comes Mavo!”—the first animated TV series with signing characters. Many thanks to Jennifer Vold for interpreting and to Jenna Beacom for consulting on this segment.Editor's note: Regarding capitalization for “Deaf” and “deaf,” we believe this is an unsettled issue. For about 30 years, it was common to use capitalization to denote cultural deafness. In recent years, some national deaf organizations, like the National Deaf Center, have decided to use lowercase in their messaging to be more inclusive. Some individuals, however, prefer the capitalized version. We ask our guests to self-describe and capitalize at their request, and use “deaf” for non-self-describing communities.Universe of Art is hosted and produced by D. Peterschmidt, who also wrote the music. The original segment was produced by Rasha Aridi. Our show art was illustrated by Abelle Hayford. Support for Science Friday's science and arts coverage comes from the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation. Do you have science-inspired art you'd like to share with us for a future episode? Filmmaker and educator Cat Brewer joins me on the podcast to discuss her award-winning documentary feature film Sign the Show, which tells the story of American Sign Language (ASL) interpreters at live performances. The film aims to amplify voices in the deaf and hard of hearing community and raise awareness about the quest for access to live entertainment events, including music performances, comedy shows, and more. The film was recently released in April 2024 in celebration of National Deaf Awareness Month. Sign the Show combines informative storytelling with humorous and heartfelt conversations, educating audiences about the need for ASL interpretation at live events, the ways interpreters creatively overcome challenges, and the important difference this type of accessibility makes for event attendees. Cat shares amazing stories with me about the filmmaking process, including meeting Andre 3000 from Outkast and his enthusiasm for bringing sign language accessibility to his live performances, and about her interactions with Matt Maxey, who interprets live shows for Chance the Rapper and several other performers. I share some of my favorite stories from the film, including how Maxey describes how he creatively interprets slang terms in lyrics such as "lit" and "trap" to Waka Flocka Flame, who is also an executive producer of the documentary.

In this episode, I am joined by Kate Kurzhal, a certified and licensed Speech-Language Pathologist serving the South Bend, IN area. She is the sole owner and operator of Therapeutic Interventions & Solutions, LLC. Her interest in the field began as a young adult while helping her Dad run "Learn to Skate" clinics where several children and their families with varying disorders learned how to ice-skate. She recalls one parent saying, "watching my son's smile out there is all I really want." which in turn pushed her to find a career that would afford more of these moments through therapy. She is a proud double graduate from Indiana University-Bloomington with proficiency in American Sign Language (ASL). She then returned to South Bend where she has worked across a variety of settings. She attributes these diverse hands-on experiences to be significant in her practice today. She ultimately loves giving families tools, strategies and functional ways to apply therapy to support the needs of those they love.
This radio interview is an abbreviated version of the full video interview, available with ASL interpretation on Youtube.Think back to your favorite childhood TV show—was it “Blue's Clues”? She talks with guest host Arielle Duhaime-Ross about ASL access in childhood, the science of learning, and how she's creating “Here Comes Mavo!”—the first animated TV series with signing characters.Transcripts for this segment will be available the week after the show airs on sciencefriday.com.
