After discovering the healing power of weed while serving in Vietnam, Dennis Peron smuggled two pounds of high-grade herb home. From there he became a charismatic and defiant leader of San Francisco's medical weed and gay rights movements. A fiery street-fighting optimist, he suffered multiple stints in prison—and even took a bullet in a police raid—all without ever giving up or backing down. The movement he helped lead and inspire liberated the world. If you don't know his story, then you don't know weed history. On this episode of Grow Sessions, entitled, “GMP Cultivation Standards in Cannabis,” we discuss the importance of GMP (good manufacturing practices) in cannabis cultivation with Lee Smith, a cultivation consultant and business owner within the industry. In any business, safe and clean manufacturing practices are crucial, and cannabis cultivation is no exception. Because cannabis is not just a plant, but a medicine that many people consume, cultivator's must ensure they are meeting GMP standards and providing the best possible end result for users. This means adequate testing of the product and meeting health and safety standards during all phases of production. As the cannabis industry is still in its infancy, there are not many federal regulations of how the product is grown and handled. In fact, there are no official GMP or GAP (good agricultural practices) standards within the cannabis industry at this time. Some states, such as Massachusetts, have done a good job at leading the way in terms of cannabis regulation standards. Lee believes the core sector cannabis companies need to look at in terms of GMP are: organization, building facilities, production and processes, packaging and labeling and warehousing and distribution. If cultivator's make sure they check off all of the safety boxes from the beginning, they can ensure a safe, clean product for consumers. Listen now to learn more about why the cannabis industry needs GMP standards in cultivation and how you can ensure your business is operating as safely as possible. About Lee SmithLee Smith is currently the director of the largest indoor cannabis nursery on the East Coast, Vanagarden. According to Lee, Vandergarden is the most technically advanced and forward thinking company he has ever worked with. Although he grew up in Massachusetts, Lee's cannabis career started in Northern California in the mid 90's. After moving to the Bay Area, he had the chance of meeting with Dennis Peron, who opened his mind to the critical role that cannabis would play in the field of emerging natural plant based therapies. Lee's research delves into how the inflorescence expresses and how bar and other key environmental parameters can influence phloem and xylem. His cultivation experience has led him to meet many out-of-the-box pioneers and farmers in the cannabis industry in his long journey to becoming a grower, consultant and pioneer in this emerging field. If you have questions for Lee, you can reach him at garconbaton@gmail.com or through Linkedin at https://www.linkedin.com/in/cannasmith/
Dennis Peron first tried cannabis in Vietnam. After smuggling two pounds of high-grade herb home from the front, he became a charismatic and defiant leader of San Francisco's medical cannabis and gay rights movements. A fiery street-fighting optimist, Dennis suffered multiple stints in prison and even took a bullet in a police raid—all without ever giving up or backing down. As part of our ongoing Pride Month celebration, we're proudly re-posting this Season 1 episode that gets at the root of how the LGBTQ+ movement played a central role in not just changing the laws in California (and subsequently around the world), but in subverting a propaganda campaign against weed engineered by the government, law enforcement, and the medical establishment. Despite being repeatedly arrested, he helped lead the effort to legalize medical marijuana. This is the audio of a live video posted by Mike Robinson, Founder, Global Cannabinoid Research Center with some important information and updates on the compassion program, and packages Mike has recently mailed out. If you or someone you love is in need of cannabinoid medicine, please go to: https://whosneedinghelp.com! " I'd do a live video because a lot of people are getting all of these different things in the mail, you know, these different compassion packages and some of you are wondering, Hey, what did I get from you, Mike?" Mike explains the items contained within the packages and gives detailed explanations on how to apply, for topicals, dosage for those receiving oils and elaborates on the cannabinoids contained within each product. He also discusses nanotechnology, which was used in some of these formulations and talks about new products he's developing as well. He tips his had to Dennis Peron, Founding Father of Proposition 215, allowing for the medical use of marijuana for the first time since prohibition! From a blog on https://mikesmedicines.com: "With the loss of so many close to him, Peron was distraught and desirous of providing compassionate use of cannabis to all that were in need. So in 1991, Peron organized efforts and gained the passage of the famed yet little known about San Francisco’s Proposition P, a resolution calling on the state government to permit medical cannabis, which received 79% of the vote. That same year, he co-founded the San Francisco Buyers Club, the first public dispensary of legal cannabis, per the local resolution, since Prohibition. His story is endless, but the two of these legends had previous encounters before the gathering of compassionate minds that wrote the one page ‘Compassionate Use Act’ of 1996. Back In 1993, Peron and Brownie Mary published a cookbook with recipes for cannabis edibles. The Union of Peron and Brownie Mary (and the 215 Team) All of this had a fire burning within Peron, he and Rathburn had history along with a dozen that were assembled to draft and gain the signatures to put the well known 1996 Proposition 215 on the ballot – but most had doubts a law allowing people t smoke and use cannabis would pass. – but it did. This allowed for the medicinal use of cannabis for the first time since prohibition and started what we all know as the industry of today. Many would debate other actions in other states helped – and that wouldn’t be out of the ballpark. But, without out a doubt the fire under Peron and company has changed the world. Many are unaware that then attorney general of California Dan Lungren ordered a raid of Peron’s Dispensary the night before the law passed which closed down the Buyers Club – but not for long as once 215 passed it reopened where Peron and company helped out crowds of his friends which eventually created a network of compassion." In this episode, Mike Robinson, Founder, Global Cannabinoid Research Center, Cannabis Advocate, Cancer Survivor joins Jill Woodworth to discuss his MILLION MILLIGRAM GIVEAWAY of CBD to alleviate the dire need of many within compassion communities affected by coronavirus. Mike shares his own lived experience as a special needs advocate for many years and how devastating it is to learn of past clients struggling profusely in light of the drop off of IEP services post Coronavirus restrictions. "Kids in regular ed will have free home school by their computer every day, paid for by the US government. And there's absolutely zero announcement about the most vulnerable members of society that attend public school in special education. There is Zero an announcement about the civil rights and protections put in place by our government to the 1971 Omnibus bill that created DHS, that created CPS, that created the Individual with Disabilities Education Act that requires states to take the funds that they got and create programs for children and special education. These are very strict laws regarding how you use these funds. And the issue right now is not whether or not there's a pandemic, a cold, a virus. The issue is that states that have received billions and billions of dollars in funding for special education. They commingle those into their regular funds. So now they have gone ahead and used that money and now are going ahead and allowing parents to call and say, "Hey, I can't help what's going on at home", to lose their child. So, by lack of supporting children who are federally protected with these supports, we are facing a crisis, of epidemic proportions." "People tell me that "Oh, it's not my business plan. Oh, I can't give this away. Oh I'm going bankrupt "and I am like, "Guess what? What you give comes back. Always". If you give negativity it comes back to you. When you give a loan. It comes back to you. If you expect instant gratification, when you give. guess what? It's not happening. There's no remuneration, there's money coming to you for giving. It's love and love is returned. You put love out to the world, and it's infectious. It's way more infectious than the Coronavirus. Yeah, so that's my plan. My plan is to put love into the world. 1 million milligrams, a million milligrams, and the details are still being worked out. It's pretty awesome. So people can get a small amount of CBD oil mailed to them or they'll pick it up and have something that they can use to help themselves their loved ones" Mike learned about compassion under the tutelage of Dennis Peron, an American activist and businessman who became a leader in the movement for the legalization of cannabis throughout the 1990s. He influenced many in California and thus changed the political debate on marijuana in the United States. Wayne Justmann is a master shit talker. He also started the first medical marijuana ID program. Wayne was diagnosed with HIV in 1988. A few years later he met Dennis Peron, who founded the first cannabis dispensary in response to the AIDS epidemic. Wayne worked closely with Dennis on the initiative that made California the first state to legalize medical marijuana in 1996. Back then, giving away free weed was just part of the business. They called it Compassionate Care. People were sick and some of them couldn’t even afford a nickel bag. That was still true when Prop 64 made recreational use legal in California. But regulation and taxation made it next to impossible to give away free weed, and the programs that once existed to provide the stuff to the terminally ill started to drop like flies. Tracy Ryan, the founder and CEO of @MyCannakids, a cannabis tincture brand focused on serving children like her daughter Sophie, was no longer able to support families with children battling cancer, epilepsy, and other conditions. For two years, Tracy, Wayne, and other activists and organizers railed against the state’s treatment of medical marijuana patients. In October, nearly three years after California voted to legalize, Governor Gavin Newsom gave new life to Compassionate Care when he signed Senate Bill 34. The donation of medical marijuana to the terminally ill is now legal and tax exempt. But is the spirit of compassion still alive?
In 1973, twenty-year-old Valerie Leveroni Corral was riding in a Volkswagen bug through the Nevada desert when a small airplane swooped down low enough that its torque caused the vehicle to careen end-over-end. Valerie was flung against the roof and doors, causing brain damage, epilepsy and debilitating migraines. She was then prescribed a staggering range of pharmaceuticals to deal with the aftermath, but they proved largely ineffective in stopping her convulsions and grand mal seizures. And the side-effects left her a zombie. Then her husband Mike read about a government-funded research paper that showed unique compounds found in cannabis can reverse the growth of cancerous tumors and help control laboratory-induced seizures. What happened next is a story of resistance and resilience that involved an iconic weed garden, an armed police raid, a barricade of cannabis patients in wheelchairs and walkers, and a standoff on the steps of City Hall pitting the Wo/men's Alliance for Medical Marijuana (WAMM) against the DEA. Also in this episode, Abdullah fondly remembers hosting episodes of the VICE culinary cannabis show Bong Appetit featuring the legendary Nonna Marijuana—a.k.a. Valerie’s mother! WAMM wishes to offer special thanks to a grower known as "Dr. John" (not the late musician) for helping to supply them with cannabis after their earliest arrests and garden confiscations. WAMM also wishes to stress the key role played by the LGBTQ+ community and AIDS/HIV activists in helping to organize and operate the collective. He had right side paralysis, was in a wheelchair, intubated and put into ICU in a coma 39 times, has had over 200 hospitalizations after being brought to ER in status over an 18-year period. It all came to an end on September 8, 2013 with the introduction of “can't eat it all” Korean Ruby, given to him by a roommate which was edible balls of CBD. He gained the understanding that cannabis is awesome medicine if you know how to use it correctly. Mike is also a special needs attorney & advocate who has worked extensively across the US, pro bono, representing families in special needs litigation. After going public about his treatment with CBD and Cannabinoid medicine he was unable to litigate due to his use of a schedule 1 substance so turned his focus to working in the compassion program. The compassion program was started under Prop. 215 in CA. It was the dream of Dennis Peron to provide treatment for those people with severe conditions that can't afford the oils, don't know what to get, then bringing them what they need, showing them how to use it, researching the actual product, the actual Cannabinoids being used and show family members, “Hey, this is why we're using this application”. It could be oils that are ingested it could be suppositories, etc. Mike continues the narrative, sharing how he was on his way to check in with an individual who then was then 1-year seizure-free, now 4 years seizure-free when he got a call from a frantic mom concerned about her daughter with autism and severe epilepsy. He remembers being profoundly concerned when this mother gave him the list of multiple medications, she was taking that didn’t jive with each other and went to meet with this parent. He showed up at the house and the daughter was having a grand mal status seizure. Mike was able to help this family treat the daughter’s epilepsy with CBD oils and whole plant medicine, “I’m a firm believer in using the whole plant when it comes to severe autism. I believe that using THC, it's degraded cousin CBD, I'm sorry. CBN. CBN is a cannabinoid that really mellows out any behavior, including my own, it promotes sleep, rest. And makes the mind rest. So it really calms down children with autism. Yes, CBN. So anyway, I mean, she responded so well. It was just beyond incredible. The day after she started her mom took her to the doctor and the doctor was like, What did you do what happened?” There is so much more discussed in this episode regarding Mike’s phenomenal advocacy and perseverance in the face of incredible barriers and resistance from within and without the healthcare and medical communities. Dennis Peron (1945-2018) first discovered the healing power of cannabis while serving in Vietnam. After smuggling two pounds of high-grade herb home from the front, he became a charismatic and defiant leader of San Francisco's medical cannabis and gay rights movements. A fiery street-fighting optimist, he suffered multiple stints in prison and even took a bullet in a police raid—all without ever giving up or backing down.

Today on Cannabis Confidential Dr. Dina is joined by Dennis Peron, a cannabis and LGBT activist. After serving in Vietnam, Dennis moved to San Francisco, eventually becoming known for his co-authoring of Proposition 215 – California’s Compassionate Use Act of 1996. In the 1970's, Peron ran the “Big Top marijuana supermarket” from home, and was essential to the passage of a 1978 initiative to allow the personal use of cannabis in San Francisco.Though the initiative was never adopted by law enforcement, Dennis organized Proposition P in 1991. Dennis also founded the city’s first medical cannabis club, the Church Compassion Center, in 1993. Two years later he opened the Cannabis Buyers Club in San Francisco, which is said to be where the medical cannabis movement was born. The Cannabis Buyers Club were fielding Proposition 215 to San Francisco patients before it passed in 1996.

PatiCakes, Queen of Cannabis; Mr B, Tech God, most of the time and special guest , Medical Marijuana/Criminal Attorney Zenia Gilg of San Francisco discuss Prop 215 amongst other things. Zenia is a highly respected and distinguished criminal defense attorney. Her advocacy on behalf of clients charged with various marijuana offenses continues to generate considerable media attention and support from people nationwide. Zenia is also active in NORML, a nonprofit, public-interest lobby that provides a voice for those Americans who oppose marijuana prohibition. A graduate of California State University, Fresno, Zenia holds a law degree from McGeorge at the University of the Pacific. Proposition 215 was a state-wide voter initiative authored by Dennis Peron, Anna Boyce RN, John Entwistle, Jr., Valerie Corral,[2] Dale Gieringer, Thomas Seiler, William Panzer, Scott Imler,[3] and psychiatrist Tod H. Mikuriya, and approved by California voters. It allows patients with a valid doctor's recommendation, and the patient's designated Primary Caregivers, to possess and cultivate marijuana for personal medical use, and has since been expanded to protect a growing system of collective and cooperative distribution. The Act added Section 11362.5 to the California Health and Safety Code. This law has caused much conflict in the United States between states' rights advocates and those who support a stronger federal presence. zenia@jacksonsquarelaw.com www.hempradio.com www.nwaoc.com/facebook Like us on facebook!
