Paprika! This week, Emily and V head back to 2021 -- but mostly 2022, carte blanche -- to look at the phenomenon of Dracula Daily and its explosion of popularity on Tumblr. We also head to 1992 to look at the worst movie of all time, Bram Stoker's Dracula, starring extremely beautiful people who were all in extremely different movies all at once. And then we traipse to 1897 to look at the original novel of Dracula and its extremely weird creation by a very strange l'il guy, Bram Stoker. Plus, bats! Bats everywhere! Also, Jack the Ripper! Also, you may note that this is actually a date from last week (in fandom history). And um. So is... so is the next episode. V messed up the spreadsheet a little bit and we didn't notice until we'd recorded three episodes in a row that happened on either May 3 or May 4. ...It won't happen again, probably. This episode is brought to you by Slate's ICYMI podcast. Co-hosts Rachelle Hampton and Candice Lim talk to writer Cyrena Touros about Dracula Daily, a newsletter that emails bite-sized passages from Bram Stoker's 1897 novel to more than 235,000 readers. As an epistolary novel, Dracula is broken into letters written between May and November. Dracula Daily emails those letters to readers, who have now created a book club-like fandom rife with memes and sidebars about a guy stuck in a vampire's castle.

Recorded during the midst of Dracula Daily, shortly after completing their own movie for the 48 hour film challenge, Carter and Ashley discuss the newly released Renfield (2023). In a modern take on two classic characters, Renfield is Dracula's familiar, and has come to realize their relationship is toxic. Despite performances by Nic Cage and Nicholas Hoult, the film struggled in the box office. Sean details not only his love for pickle beer, but the how's and why's that love began. The conversation shifts to an email series (Dracula Daily) that Sean enjoys and turns to email in general. All of it ends with a discussion of what The Boys were watching at that time. MotA-Minute: Beneath The Minute of the Apes - In Between are the segments wherein the guys take the time to record the conversations they have in between recording sessions for MotA. Topics range from the personal to various pop culture tangents. "Minute of the Apes" is the daily podcast where Sean, Richard and Todd break down "The Planet of the Apes" movies, one minute at a time. At times they feel that the Netflix series went too far, but were overall good and deserve a new take within the existing MCU. The talk turns to COVID restrictions and a take on how it is handled in different cultures as Todd discusses having attended a funeral during the pandemic. As we work our way further into this much-beloved vampire tale, we find that there's a reason an overly-devoted minion of a monster is occasionally called a Renfield! That's right, we're spending more time with everyone's favorite counting-obsessed cuckoo, and boy will you hate what he's up to with those flies! Outside of our time with Doctor Seward, there's plenty else happening, for that matter. Where's all Lucy's blood going? What's up with her mom? will that american guy show up again? I love finding all these little details that get left out of adaptations, they're so fun to think about how and why they're not there. Funny how these episodes are coming out right after the end of Dracula Daily, huh? What a ride that was, watching the internet learn stuff I had learned a few weeks ago! Want to read along with us? This year, over 200,000 Dracula Daily readers have rediscovered Bram Stoker's original classic novel, cheering its earnestly good heroes who fight predators with the power of Christ.
Alright, onto a seasonally appropriate classic, Dracula! This book just kept surprising me, I'll be honest, you really think you know a book from a few modern adaptations but there's so much more to unpack here! This episode really dives deep into the little details of the internet's favorite blorbo, Johnathan Harker, and the great time he had getting that delicious recipe for paprika hendl. I won't lie, I do very much want to make myself some paprika hendl after that description. Also a highlight: little unorthodox culinary advice from Renfield! We'll see if I manage to catch up to where Dracula Daily is at with the posted episodes, I got ahead of it pretty quickly in the live recording anyway! Want to read along with us? A family curse. A desolate moor. An unexplained death. A monstrous dog. Arguably one of the most famous short stories of all time, The Hound of the Baskervilles is the third of four novellas about the great detective, and the first story Doyle wrote after Holmes's (spoilers!) apparent demise in “The Final Problem.” It all comes together into a spine-tingling mystery that Watson's writing turns into a horror tale. We discuss Watson's turn as a Gothic heroine, the genre-hopping joy of Hound, Dracula Daily, and how Sir Henry should have ended up with Beryl at the end of this one, actually. Content warning: Racism, death, British preoccupation with bloodlines - and some animals meet some nasty ends in this story. Sorry - the dog dies in this one. Spoiler alert: We talk extensively about what happens in "The Final Problem" and "The Empty House." s1e28 "The Night Before" This episode sort of half-tries to be a Halloween episode and generally fails to impress us but there is some wackiness along the way. Along with special guest Erin we'll talk finding an eye in your soup, predictions for Pegasus's secret powers, and how much of this was just all a dream. Plus anti-recommendations for things you shouldn't read, and a long digression into Twilight crossovers. SHOW NOTES: - Our guest was @ErinWormMoon who you can also hear on the @GaysGaze podcast! - Here's a link to Dracula Daily and one to where you can read the graphic novel Dragon. - the "King's Hand" tweet - Manga panel of Yugi saying he has no plan to counteract Pegasus
Clarissa had a theory in those days—they had heaps of theories, always theories, as young people have. It was to explain the feeling they had of dissatisfaction; not knowing people; not being known. For how could they know each other? You met every day; then not for six months, or years. It was unsatisfactory, they agreed, how little one knew people. But she said, sitting on the bus going up Shaftesbury Avenue, she felt herself everywhere; not “here, here, here”; and she tapped the back of the seat; but everywhere. She waved her hand, going up Shaftesbury Avenue. She was all that. So that to know her, or any one, one must seek out the people who completed them; even the places.Virginia Woolf's Mrs. Dalloway is a novel that traces the lives of several characters over the course of a single day in June 1923. The novel jumps between characters, tracing their inner monologues and their memories as they go about London, reminisce about their younger days, and worry about where their lives have brought them. Suzanne and Chris explore this web of connections and parallel lives, and dwell on particular moments of intensity: an overheard conversation at a party, an unexpected kiss, or even riding a bus.[Content warning: the novel and the episode contains discussion of mental illness and suicide.]SHOW NOTES.Virginia Woolf: Mrs. Dalloway. In this episode, we embrace the goth lifestyle and go back to basics. That is to say, we read Dracula. Daily. Along with 25,000+ people. It's a long story, okay. Also My Chemical Romance is back and half the hosts are excited about this, and it's not the half you'd think. Sometimes the internet is just a vehicle to embrace your inner emo kid, and sometimes it's a vehicle to lose a lot of money in a crypto meltdown. These are definitely equivalent things. Halloween is quite a ways away, beloved listeners, but for the Sneople (and Jonathan Harker), vampire season has just begun! This week, Matty, Ezra, and Helena talk about the new craze sweeping (parts of) the Internet - Dracula Daily! For those who haven't heard, Dracula Daily is a Substack where pieces of the original Dracula novel is emailed to you as days pass in the novel - since the novel is told through diary entries, letters, news articles, etc, each section is dated and therefore easy to break up and send out on the days in which events occur rather than by chapter. Our hosts, made up of two long time Dracula fans and one Dracula new comer, discuss the trend, why it's taken off, and why they're all enjoying it. They also use this as an excuse to discuss various Dracula film and TV adaptations - they're looking at you, 2020 BBC Dracula mini series. The Sneople would like to use this section that's normally saved for some kind of closing joke to make a prediction that starting May 16th there is going to be a rise of Jonathan Harker/Count Dracula fanfiction and they're not particularly excited about it. If they call it into being by making this prediction, they are very sorry.
