Has gone outside of their usual wheelhouse and ventured into the world of instrumental gypsy jazz with their new album Dinner for Derelicts. QUEL BORDEL (QB!) was formed in San Diego, CA in 2013 w/ a Ukrainian, two Filipino brothers, a classically trained violinist, and a punk rock drummer. After the better part of a decade, they have had multiple releases and kept up a vigorous touring regiment of over 150+ shows a year. The band has toured the US, Canada, and Europe, and they have made a small dent in the folk-punk music scene: coining their own sub-genre “world punk.” After the release of their first full-length CD, Caravan Treasures (nominated for Best World Music Album by the 2015 San Diego Music Awards), QB! reveled in a three-week international festival tour with French folk group BandàpArt (headlining Coin de la Vigne, & FestiBaloche in France), which they repeated again 2016 in the US (headlining Crestfest in Colorado, SD GypsyFest in San Diego, and others) amid several regional tours and resident gigs as well. 2017 saw increased regional touring with a full European Tour (headlining Coin de la Vigne again in France, as well as performances at Festibaloche (Olargues, France), and Highmatland Festival (Leutkirch, Germany) a motif that has continued on as the band currently maintains a vigorous touring schedule and band “bromance” with BandàpArt. In fact the two groups have merged into a side-project super-group known as BandàBordel and released an EP together in 2018. QUEL BORDEL! is noted for their wild performances and danceable beats. QB! has headlined sweaty, high-energy shows at House of Blues (Mainstage), The Holding Company, The Casbah, and has performed at the Get Shamrocked festival 7 years in a row. Likewise, the band has shared the stage with: Flatfoot 56, Metallachi, The Rum Jacks, The Real McKenzies, Diego's Umbrella, Sprung Monkey, Magic Giant, Young Dubliners, Dublin City Ramblers, Bridge City Sinners, Daze ‘N Daze, Dirty Kid Discount, and many others. Modena City Ramblers is an Italian Band from the Modena area that started in 1991. After travelling to Ireland they were inspired by Celtic music so they began to play together as a hobby. In Ireland many of the bands consist of people that come together for the love of music. They also adopted this philosophy and the concept was that people could come and go as they pleased, so it was a sort of open musical project. Their name was inspired by the Irish band, the Dublin City Ramblers which had a similar concept. Massimo Giacci who is the bass player is the longest standing member of the group since he started in 1992 and has been with them ever since. Francesco Fry Moneti has been with the group since 1996 and he plays the violin and mandolin. Their newest album is entitled Riaccolti and it's available on Spotify https://open.spotify.com/album/3xSMNI6NIjvvrmJd3nTy7J?si=JBBih1-mSayqCzwfXwRBbw, or record stores. In this interview we talk about some of the adventures that they have had touring around the world. They have played in some incredible places and had the opportunity to meet some important people, but they have also taken part in some really positive projects like working with NGO’s and Francesco worked with OXFAM in Palestine where he had an unforgettable encounter with Arafat. We also talk about a very special guitar that Fry had the possiblity to bring on a MCR tour. It was made entirely out of pieces of migrant boats that sank in the Mediterranean Sea near Lampedusa, Italy. We talk about the significance of the guitar and touch on a handful of people that played it. Several people have approved of this project including Carlos Santana, Avici, Patti Smith, Jovanotti, Vencio Caposella, Franz Ferdinand
Over the river and through the woods to the Windy City Irish Radio studio we go as the boys celebrate all that they are thankful for this holiday season. They are especially thankful for the kind citizen of Dublin who sent provisions across the sea on the ship named The Lyon to rescue the Pilgrims from certain starvation leading to the holiday we celebrate today. Had the Irishman not saved Thanksgiving, Tim and Mike would not be here today to regale you with a cornucopia of songs of the season invoking the major food groups of the Thanksgiving feast. There's bread and honey and butter from Dublin's I Draw Slow and Bloomington's Shanties, there's parsley, sage, rosemary and thyme from The Gothard Sisters and the necessary meat and drink from The Quinn Family. Don't forget the Potato on the Door from the great Liz Carroll, and the holiday favorite, The Cranberries. And, of course, Thanksgiving would not be complete without Dustin the Turkey. Also featuring music to be thankful for from Celtic Spirits, Byrne and Kelly, "Dublin City Ramblers", We Banjo 3, Bing Crosby, and Cathie Ryan in advance of her holiday concert at the Irish American Heritage Center on December 8th. It's a veritable feast that you won't want to miss! Tune in every Wednesday from 8PM - 9PM to WSBC 1240 AM and check out the Thanksgiving podcast at www.windycityirishradio.com
