Nazareth's iconic 1975 album ‘Hair Of The Dog' cemented their legacy in the Rock annals. The album became a commercial breakthrough, propelled by the timeless hits singles ‘Hair of the Dog' and ‘Love Hurts'. The album's impact on hard rock and heavy metal, influenced bands like Guns N' Roses and Twisted Sister as well as popularising the power ballad. We asked and our listeners answered with passion! The best remedies for a hangover cure were tea with honey, a gel pack and most importantly-- HAIR OF THE DOG: Drink one drink of whatever you had last night.
Using alcohol as a remedy for a hangover is so common that it has its own term: “the hair of the dog.” Discover why some people swear by this and what's really happening when you drink to feel better. This episode explains the real reason hangovers feel bad (it's not what you think). We explore why so many people promise “never again” after a hangover, only to go back on their word. And we examine why you should be a scientist—not a moralist—when you're looking for relief. Get the full show notes and more information here: https://rachelhart.com/372

Today on the show I'm sitting down with local singer-songwriter, Mike Smith; I'm hellbent on giving Mike Smith his due in this episode and possibly making him blush beneath this perfectly sculpted salt and pepper beard. Though his modesty is like a warm handshake on a cold winter afternoon in the local park or akin to grandmas homecooked meatballs, his music is a storyboard that covers a lot of the past, present and possibly future of the local music scene and is an untold chronical that deserves to be heard. As someone who shined quite brightly in his day and now enjoys passing the limelight to a new generation who wishes to kiss the sun, I can say with 100% certainty that I understand what makes Mike Smith tick. From the Ripovs to his Paper Hearts, Mike Smith has done it all from punk rock to country and I couldn't be happier to have him on the show. “'I don't know, Goddamnit!' It's the only thing Willy's sure of, and he keeps shouting it at the cop. In the dark room, a spotlight is burning his eyes down to the sockets. It's a basement of sorts, the ceiling a crisscross of piping and duct work, industrial grey and dark green." Where memory should be: a black hole. Is there any hope? A man's struggle with addiction can't be kept secret when it threatens to destroy his family.

In 1993 Alan Sprints opened a brewery in Portland, OR. He did his brewery his way making unique and interesting beers unlike what he found on his local shelves. With a culinary background he was, and is, a true artist, contrarian and inspired creator. Hair of the Dog produced beers that were, and if you're lucky enough to have some in your cellar, still are, full of flavor, high in alcohol and complex in all the right ways. Alan and his brewery were a major part in creating the strong beer category and pushing craft beer away from fizzy yellow crap. His unique beer and attention to quality and detail took him and his brewery around the world. He collaborated with breweries in multiple countries and sold his beer internationally. As he built his business and his notoriety he had multiple opportunities to sell. He turned down each of them, including the one from Lagunitas. When he decided to cease operations, drop the mike and ride into the sunset in 2022 he did so with a smile. After nearly 29 years, Hair of the Dog closed with beer in bottles, beer in tanks and beer in the heart of the visionary that created it. You've (almost) made it through another year. Congrats. There was a lot going on in 2022 and you may have missed some of the beer stories with all this going on. PBR started off the year with some interesting Tweets. We saw some big acquisitions and mergers, a few major closures, and we lost a legend. NA beer continued to grow, and it continues to be highly-debated whether or not the sectors growth is meaningful. West Coast IPA came back around for a visit, and we're guessing we'll see more of it. Brian's betting on more rauchbiers, but I'm not so sure about that one. Our biggest concern is that breweries are out of Covid money and some that may have been ready to call it quits in 2020 are facing that now, along with others. I'm afraid we'll see a lot of closures in the new year. Well. Whatever happens. We'll be at the studio having a nice, cold pint and waiting for it all to blow over. Cheers and Happy New Year! While all your favorite retailers are busy hanging their decorations in preparation for the arrival of the big man in the red suit, The Cult Boys are still firmly fixated on frights! This week we pour y'all a little extra scare juice to get over that Halloween hangover in the form of 3 more terrifying tales of terror. Firstly, we end our 80s V-Cinema run with possibly the biggest, baddest entry of all in the form of Gakidama aka Demon Within (1985). Then we pop on the Australian boob tube and check out the made for TV Halloween knockoff, Coda aka Deadly Obsession (1987). Finally, we bring the lunkheaded trash genius, James Bryan back to the show for one of THE dumbest entries in one of the dumbest horror subgenres, the Slasherific backwoods romp, Don't Go in the Woods... Alone! (1981) Feedback: cultofmuscle@gmail.com Facebook: facebook.com/groups/cultofmuscle Merch: redbubble.com/people/cultofmuscle/shop

For almost 30 years, Alan Sprints and his Portland, Oregon brewery Hair of the Dog pioneered American craft beer through some of the earliest barrel-aging experiments and developed potent beers built for aging, creating some of the original “whales” in the process. Once Alan decided to retire and close his legendary brewery in June of 2022, Craig booked a trip to experience Hair of the Dog for a final time and to get Mr. Sprints on the microphone to reflect on his career and look ahead to the joys of retirement. In addition to the interview, we are fortunate to drink through five Hair of the Dog beers and cross off a significant line on our beer bucket lists. We also speculate on the brewery's actual magical powers, open the oldest beer we've had on the show, and play some 1993-based trivia along the way. Thanks again to Alan and his whole crew - all of beer has been made better because of Hair of the Dog. Email a voicemail message to celticpodcast@gmail.com John Derek Morgan emailed: "Hi, Marc. I love both of your podcasts that I have found. I was curious if you know of the name of the type of Irish/Celtic music that features tenor banjo? I notice that this style of music seems to feature a range of instrumentation, but I am currently learning the tenor banjo. Also, have you ever done an episode that focused on the tenor banjo?" The Carroll Sisters emailed: "We managed to get our album up on Spotify (and we think all most major streaming services). Please let us know if you can access it. It is our first time doing this, so we are not sure what we are doing. Thank you for playing some of our music on your podcast. We are so excited that we got into the Celtic Top 20!!" Darren Raleigh emailed: "I just saw you post and thought I'd check in again. You played some of my CD "Silverwheel" a while ago. Thank you.. Now that I'm retired from flying people to hospitals I'm going to do a lot more playing, traveling, and recording. So, slainte mohr! I'll be seeing you around."
Lots of closure news this week but not all of it bad. We sit down with one of our favorite brewers, Alan Sprints, about his retirement plans and what's changed over the years in the brewing world.
