Grand tidings and happy Beltaine! As we venture forth into the life of the year, under the power of the Sun, what measures may we take to ensure our protection and survival? When energies of life swirl and abound--and the might and power of others perhaps stand in our way--how might we entrap such malicious intents and continue our dance beneath the Sun?

I'd love to see a  picture of what you're doing while listening or of a band that you saw recently. Email me at celticpodcast@gmail. John Golden answered the question, What are you doing while listening?: "Often working BUT usually play the St Paddy's episode for the family feast." James J. Grefig replied: "Hi Marc, This St. Patrick's Day I hope I'll be listening to your podcasts." John Mahony replied to the Celtic Music Magazine: "Hey Marc, Thanks for everything you do to promote Irish and Celtic culture! I usually listen while working on technical stuff. It relaxes me and helps me keep up with newer bands. For St. Patrick's Day, I will be going to a lower - key party rather than hitting the bars, though I might stop at one or two. I help produce live Irish and Celtic music shows year - round, so I guess the answer is that I'm just doing more of the same!" Edward Birdsall emailed: "Greetings; What am I doing while listening  -  out for daily walk if it is not raining or snowing here in Georgia (1 - 2hours long)  also I listen while donating platelets at the Red Cross which I do on average every 6 weeks which means 2.5 - 3hrs of show for that " Chris Raisin replied to the question, 'What are you doing while listening?': Usually lying in bed with my eyes closed (but not asleep). And for Patrick's Day? "Probably the same as I do for any other day (being 73 years old, single and living alone having lost contact with all my friends due to those infernal lockdowns we had in Melbourne." He's celebrating "By just listening to your great podcasts each time they are issued and remembering back to my days as an energetic Scottish (yes, not Irish) Country Dancer and Highland dancer (not so good at the Highland stuff…LOL). I still have a kilt in my closet (a bit moth eaten now) which I ceased fitting into about 30 years ago. Keep up your great sessions, and I look forward to (I hope) a bonus session. Slainte!"

Andrew Kruspe of Black Market Haggis replied: "Marc, Hello! First, I hope y'all are doing well, and that you had a wonderful St. Patrick's Day season. We did here, and we thought we would share some photos from a special event that we did at Lowe Mill in Huntsville. We had a “hands - on concert.” We played a 45 minute set, and then we passed out about 35 bodhráns and taught the audience how to play a reel. They then joined us for a tune! Maureen R replied: "St. Patrick's Day is a family day, starting with donuts, then Mass at St. Colman, one of the oldest churches in Cleveland, that for decades had supported a largely Irish immigrant neighborhood. This Mass is the start of the day for the West Side Irish American Club. The dignitaries and club marching units from pipes and drums to tiny pom pom "Bridgies" march into the church with all the regalia of the annual St. Patrick's Day parade. Parts of Mass are read in Irish Gaelic, and familiar Irish songs and readings are shared. The lighting in the church is changed to green uplights and the hall is filled wall to wall with families in Irish sweaters and Irish pride. After Mass and the marching units parade out of the church, everyone heads to downtown Cleveland for the annual St. Patrick's Day parade, one of the largest of its kind in the U.S. and one of the only St. Patrick's Day parades that is always held ON the day. After the parade, families disperse to the many parties all around town. After marching in the parade, I will head off to entertain the crowds with my band, Ballinloch for the last performance of a two week non - stop Irish adventure."

I've got two gigs on St. Patrick's Day, so I'll be out in the pubs (2 - 5 pm and 8 - 10 pm) in Sydney, NS, and joining a fellow artist (who you've featured recently), Mary Beth Carty, at her session in the morning. That's also how I'm celebrating the culture through music this St. Patrick's Day!  Our focus is more Scottish music, but we'll be throwing as much Irish into the mix as we possibly can...and staying away from green beer and pots of gold and leprechauns... Best of luck on the show(s)! Thanks" Roger replied: "Greetings Marc from Kendal UK  its snowing. been making a Shepherds Pie for tea while listening to the last episode with the odd stop to practise my bodhran against a song... i need lots of practice... keep up your good work. your podcast is essential listening especially if you have a ceiling to wall paper. best regards"

Phil Hartline replied to the Celtic Music Magazine: “I listen in my shop, where I make musical instruments and general wood projects.   I am celebrating Celtic Culture through music by learning to play the fiddle! I have a wonderful opportunity to learn true Co. Clare style from a man who spent a lot of time there. Beginner that I am, I will still be playing tunes on my fiddle to celebrate!" Paul replied: "Marc, I was sitting at my computer writing code ... as one does .. "For St Patrick's Day?" I will be participating in an Irish Road Bowling event with my co - workers at the Green Bank Observatory in Green Bank, West Virginia We started back in October, listening to music for Samhain, then continued into November and December with Celtic Christmas ... and really we listen to Celtic music year - round  -  but I will be celebrating Celtic culture by wearing the green on Friday while I'm busy at Ból an bhóthair, then hoisting a proper stout afterwards. Going to a fife and drum reunion in July (in Williamsburg, VA), where I will be playing a heck - ton of good Irish, Scots, and Welsh music (as well as a smattering of German and English marches, because, well, 18th C. Military music was all over the place) We always enjoy your shows!!!" PENNIERICH replied: "During the show we usually take a break and just relax and listen.” Jesse Ferguson emailed: "I'll be listening to the Irish & Celtic Music Podcast at work that day, then practicing my favourite Irish songs at home on my guitar. Finally, I'll be activating a new Irish song on my YouTube channel, to share with my subscribers, a tradition I've kept going for over 12 years." Michael Maccarone emailed: "Marc Gunn, I usually download episodes and stockpile them. I listen to them on (my rare) vacations, after I have broken them down into 20 - 25 minute chunks (my mp3 player won't rewind within a track, so I split each episode into 3 - 5 mini episodes, which makes it easier if I missed something and want to go back). As a result, I'm only up to episode #430 so far. I don't have any specific Celtic culture plans [for St Patrick's Day] for this week, other than I just watched the Oscar - winning short, An Irish Goodbye yesterday, and hope to get to the Banshees of Inisheerin in the next couple of weeks. Keep up the good work!"

Stirring the Cauldron

The festival of Beltaine, May Day, is a celebration of the return of spring and the promise of summer, a time for love magic and spells for increasing the fertility of the land and the plants that grow upon it. Like Samhain in autumn, Beltaine is also a time when the veil between the physical and spiritual world is at its most transparent and the ancestors and denizens of the Otherworld easily interact with the world of humans. Presenting a practical guide to the celebration of Beltaine, Ellen Evert Hopman examines the plants, customs, foods, drinks, and rituals of May Day across many cultures. Discussing the gods and goddesses of spring, Hopman details the rituals for honoring them as well as traditional poems, prayers, incantations, folk rhymes, and sayings related to this time of year. She explores well dressing, the custom of honoring the source of sacred water by decorating a well. She also looks at Beltaine's association with Walpurgisnacht and Hexennacht, which fall the preceding evening. In the extensive section on the sacred plants of Beltaine, the author explores more than 90 herbs and trees, offering spells, rituals, and recipes alongside their medicinal healing uses. She reveals sacred woods suitable for the Beltaine fires and Beltaine flowers for rituals and spells. She explores herbs for luck, magic, purification, abundance, and love; herbs for protection, such as bindweed, elder, and St. John's wort; herbs of the Faeries and Elves, such as burdock and dandelion; and herbs for journeying to the Otherworld and contacting the high gods and goddesses. She also details the identification, harvest, and preparation of seasonal edible herbs, greens, mushrooms, and flowers. Woven throughout with mystical tales of folk, Faery, and sacred herbs, this guide offers each of us practical and magical ways to connect with Nature, the plant kingdom, and the Spirits that surround us in the season of spring.

Welcome to Beltaine, May 1st, the Gaelic festival of fertilization when bonfires are lit, inviting the powerful sovereign Earth goddess to rise up, allowing her creations to be fertilized by the Sun God. It's great day to attract people into our lives who genuinely fertilize our dreams, ideas & aspirations, rejecting relationships who disrespect our sovereignty. This profound union between Earth and Sky is symbolized by weaving dancers around a maypole.

In this podcast I chat about my knowledge of Beltaine, history, workings, what you can do to celebrate on your path and just a few ideas. It's a beautiful time of fertility in all it's glory. Obviously my advice here has been gathered through my own practice over the 40 years of treading my path of a Green Witch following a Druid path. An illustrated collection of stories and activities to celebrate traditional Pagan festivals and the changing of the seasons• Shares original stories, based on traditional folktales and designed to be read out loud, for each festival, such as Samhain, Yule, Imbolc, Beltaine, Lughnasad, the solstices, and the equinoxes• Includes traditional games, hands-on projects special to each holiday, and seasonal recipes to enjoy the tastes and smells of each feast day• Discusses the sacred symbolism, magical lore, and cultural practices within each story and the healing and magical uses for the trees and flowers featuredOnce upon a time, when only candles lit the inside of homes and people traveled on foot or by horse, the family would finish their supper, wash and dry the dishes, and sit down before the hearth to hear a tale. These tales were not only entertaining but also passed down both history and tradition to the next generation. And as the wheel of the year turned, these tales also served to teach the children about holy days and festivals and the Gods and Goddesses who reigned over the changing seasons. In this beautifully illustrated book, Ellen Evert Hopman shares rich stories drawn from traditional folktales, hands-on crafts, and seasonal recipes to help families and classrooms learn about and celebrate traditional holy days and festivals of the sacred earth year. Designed to be read out loud, the stories are complemented with pronunciation guides and translations for foreign words. You will learn of the Cailleach, the ancient Goddess of Winter; La Befana, the Italian new year's witch; Eostre, the Goddess of Spring; Kupalnocka, the Polish feast of wreaths at midsummer; Yule among the Vikings; and many other deities and celebrations. For each story, the author includes hands-on projects special to the holiday--from crafting magical wands and brooms to flower crowns and Brighid's Crosses--as well as seasonal recipes, such as Magical Peppermint Chocolate Tea, Beltaine Bannock, and La Befana Cake, allowing families to enjoy the tastes, smells, and sounds associated with the feast days and celebrations.Ellen Evert Hopman has been a Druidic initiate since 1984. She is a founding member of the Order of the White Oak, an Archdruidess of the Tribe of the Oak, and a member of the Grey Council of Mages and Sages. She is the author of several books, including Walking the World in Wonder. She lives in Massachusetts. Lauren Mills has won national acclaim as both an author/illustrator and a sculptor. As we enter the Seelie half of the year, it's time to talk about Freeholds and Hidden Glens, which gave us seven thorough descriptions of the spaces where changelings get together for the doing of all manner of sundry things. Each of the freeholds is rather different, offering a range of ideas and story setting possibilities for a game. Each of us were rather partial to one or two of them, but we'll let you be the judge of which ones sound the most interesting... uncanny places Something that came up briefly in the discussion (but will not be expanded here to the voluminous amount it could be) is Stephen King as a point of reference for the trope of semi-conscious places, most of which turn out to be creepy. This is slightly different than what you'd usually get with Haunts in Wraith, where the spookiness of a haunted house or wherever gets mostly attributed to the presence of the ghosts. But when the place itself begins to take on an intelligence of its own, that's another matter entirely. Works by King like The Shining and perhaps Rose Red have this thread of a place becoming corrupted by the violence or evil deeds that took place there, which causes it to gather a malevolence of its own, which leads to more such deeds, making the place stronger. It all seems very darkly Glamourous. But this isn't unique to horror literature, and obviously folklore is thick with mythology and superstition about the relationship between past events and present influences in specific locations. You could easily set a scene in a place that causes people to become joyful, or lustful, or whatever. The Dreaming is brimming with emotion, so it's not unreasonable that places in close contact with it, freeholds or otherwise, would have an outsize influence on the feelings of those who enter them. If the building or glade or skate park or whatever is set up as antagonistic to a motley as well, it presents slightly more of a puzzle for players: how do you fight a landscape? How do you reason with geography? How do you prevent yourself from becoming sucked into its emotional vortex when you enter to rescue the childling/find the Treasure/defeat the nocnitsa? Ghost stories do not have a monopoly on these topics, and folding them into your chronicle can be a clever way to give changelings something a little more nebulous to deal with. But equally, it's fitting for the themes of the game; that uncertainty and sense of being out of place, what theorists since Freud have called the uncanny, reminds us that sometimes the horror in a faerie-story is from the sense that your surroundings are just somehow, indefinably wrong. Food for thought! ... just because... It's always nice to see White Wolf folks poking fun at each other with their writing, and sometimes the artwork... So, one of the freeholds, Gangster's Hideaway, is situated along a trod where all the abandoned objects in the world eventually end up (supposedly). Here we have some keys, a pen, matchbook advertising a phone sex line, a thumbtack... and a curious book buried underneath that old-school Vampire players may recognize. Because of course, if the Endless Trod is the place where all lost and abandoned junk ends up, VtM books will and should be there. (J/k, VtM players.

Druids and their magic, lore, and rituals have fascinated all those who encounter them, from the ancient Greeks and Romans onward. Even today, the mere mention of their name evokes pictures of standing stones, mistletoe, golden sickles, white-robed priests, and powerful sorcerers. But were they really as we picture them? Drawing on comparative mythology and linguistics, archaeological evidence, and etymology, Teresa Cross offers readers a comprehensive course in the history and development of the Celtic spiritual tradition and its lore, reconstructing the Druidic faith from the remnants that have survived and dedicated study of scholarly sources. She also reveals parallels with other Indo-European traditions, such as the similarities between Celtic and Vedic Hindu beliefs and practices. She chronicles the ethics and spiritual teachings of Druidism and the Celtic faith and examines what happened to these beliefs during centuries of Christianization. Moving from history to practice, Cross details magical rites and ceremonies as practiced by modern-day followers of Druidactos. She explores the structure of the Touta, which roughly corresponds to “tribe,” methods for consecrating a nemeton, the outdoor temple that offers the optimum sacred space for the meeting of heaven and earth, and the rites and customs associated with important festivals such as Beltaine and Samhain. She also explores the rules of firecraft, the sacred art of giving to the cosmos, making offerings to deities and spirits, sacred food and beverages, and the ancient Coligny calendar, including the names of the months in old Gaulish. Offering an authentic handbook for starting your own Celtic group led by Druids, Cross reveals the meanings and metaphysics behind the Celtic and Druidic customs and traditions, reuniting the fragmentary remains of long-lost Druid culture with the still-living practices of the Celtic faith. www.21stcenturyradio.com
