For the first episode of the current season, Ronni is serendipitously joined by a Dutchman named Pieter. Pieter and I met in Oviedo before the start of the trail (with Pieter already well on the way), and had the honour of crossing paths at various spots along the way. The song referred to in the podcast, is 'The Dutchman' by Liam Clancy. Follow Pieter's journeys here. Look out for Ronni, support the podcast, order the book, and buy him a coffee here. 'The Camino is Storytelling' is the second season of the podcast, recorded while hiking on the Caminos Primitivo & Finisterre, from Oviedo in Asturias to Cabo Finisterre in Galicia. Thank you to all those who helped along the way. From those who recorded with me, walked with me, gave me the space to walk alone, and supported the idea. Special thanks goes to Altberg for the amazing boots, that again gave me no blisters. The World is Storytelling podcast is based on the book by the same name. Written by Arjen Barel, Ronni Gurwicz, and Stu Packer, it is the definitive guide to how sharing stories can be used for social impact and personal growth.

The 1937 Flood Watch Podcast

What is probably America's best-known song about the Netherlands — “The Dutchman” — was written by a man who had never been there.“The song has in it almost everything I'd ever read or heard, in school and in the library, about Holland,” composer Michael Peter Smith told a fan in 2010, about 40 years after he wrote the song at the very start of his career.Did he ever consider singing it in Holland? Oh, hell no!“Can you imagine,” Smith said, “the reception a Dutch singer would get in New York City with a song in Dutch called 'The American'?”Unconditional Love“The thing is,” Smith added, “it isn't really about a country or its denizens, is it? It's about these older people's day and how she takes care of him and how they sing together and how quickly everything is past and forgotten. They truly could be anywhere, yes?” Yes, of course. Anyone who listens to it knows “The Dutchman” has little to do with windmills and canals and everything to do with the unconditional love of Margaret and the sweet little husband who is drifting away from her.Enter Steve Goodman“The Dutchman” — the best known song by Smith, who died in 2020 at age 78 — came to prominence in 1972 when it was released as the opening track of Steve Goodman's second album, Somebody Else's Troubles. A few years earlier, Goodman had become entranced with the song when he heard Smith perform it at a club in Miami. Goodman went back every chance he could just to start memorizing it. Subsequently, his rendition became an instant FM radio hit at a time when FM was rich territory for original and innovative “adult contemporary” music. Over the years, Smith always credited Goodman for giving his songs a much higher visibility. (Steve recorded a second Michael Smith classic — “Spoon River” — on a subsequent album, Incidentally, The Flood also regularly performs “Spoon River,” as reported in this earlier Flood Watch article.)The Liam Clancy Connection While Steve Goodman is central to the Michael Smith story, the composer actually had a different singer in mind for the ultimate performance of “The Dutchman.”“The only person I ever flat out asked to sing this song,” said Smith, “was Liam Clancy, the great Irish singer. I knew it'd be good for him and I was right. Bless him, he sang it for almost 40 years, and made it sound like a Clancy Brothers tune.”Liam, who Bob Dylan once called "the greatest ballad singer of all time,” recorded it with Tommy Makem in 1983.Our Take on the TuneWe always loved Liam's version, but the song already was familiar to us from Steve Goodman's recording. Roger Samples, falling deeply in love with all of Goodman's albums, learned the song in the mid-1970s and taught it to the rest of us. Then for a decade or so, Rog sang it to our harmonies. Later on, when Rog moved away, the song lingered behind, Charlie taking over the vocals.Since then, every configuration of The Flood has regularly played “The Dutchman”, often at the end of a particularly sweet evening of music and stories. Lately, Charlie has given the song this new spin by adding a bit of mellow banjo to the mix.A Flood FootnoteBy the way, “The Dutchman” also plays an important part in a choice bit of Flood Lore, as Charlie can relate in a little two-part story. Jam Logs, the Podcast of The 1937 Flood

The Flood started doing this song about 1979, right after Roger Samples and Charlie Bowen learned it from a beloved album, Tommy Makem and Liam Clancy, released in 1976.Rog always said he thought the melody was buried in the very genes of Irish people, adding, “Every time we do that song, I feel like the ghosts of my ancestors come into the room!” "Salley Gardens"has been in The Flood's repertoire ever since, even tucked away among the tunes the band recorded on its first album two decades ago.  This current version — with solos by Dan Cox and Sam St. Clair — was recorded in a recent jam session just to be our gift today. In Floodlandia, we celebrate this day by channeling the grand, green spirit of William Butler Yeats. We do several songs based on verses by this beloved Nobel laureate. Our favorite is “Down by the Salley Gardens,” which Yeats published in his 1889 volume The Wanderings of Oisin and Other Poems. In notes about the work, Years once said the poem was "an attempt to reconstruct an old song from three lines imperfectly remembered by an old peasant woman in the village of Ballisodare, Sligo, who often sings them to herself."In fact, Yeats's original title of his poem was "An Old Song Re-Sung.” Precisely what old song Yeats was thinking of we don't really know, though researchers think it might have been a now-obscure ballad called “The Rambling Boys of Pleasure.” That song's first verse spoke of lovers meeting in a garden, then added, “She bade me take life easy just as the leaves fall from the tree / But I being young and foolish, with my darling did not agree."Yeats' poem wouldn't appear under today's better known title until it was reprinted in a 1895 volume. But What's a Salley Garden? To find out, let's start with a “where.”As Yeats' notes suggest, the location of the poem is the banks of the river at Ballysadare, and that happens to be where the residents used to cultivate trees to provide roof thatching material. That material was known locally as “salley” or “sally,” a form of the Standard English word "sallow," i.e., a tree of the genus Salix. And that is close in sound to an Irish word, saileach, which means “willow.”What About the Melody? We don't know what, if any, tune Yeats had in mind for his poem, but in 1909, Irish composer Herbert Hughes, who also was a frequent arranger of folk songs, set the verse to a traditional air called "The Maids of Mourne Shore.” While over the years other different melodies also have been applied to the poem (notably by composers Rebecca Clarke and John Ireland in the 1920s), today it is usually to the tune of "The Maids of Mourne Shore" that most performers sing and play it.The earliest recordings of the song were in the 1940s by John McCormack, Peter Pears and Kathleen Ferrier. Our Take on the TuneThe Flood started doing this song about 1979, right after Roger Samples and Charlie Bowen learned it from a beloved album, Tommy Makem and Liam Clancy, released in 1976.Rog always said he thought the melody was buried in the very genes of Irish people, adding, “Every time we do that song, I feel like the ghosts of my ancestors come into the room!”“Salley Gardens” has been in The Flood's repertoire ever since, even tucked away among the tunes the band recorded on its first commercial album two decades ago. This current version — with solos by Dan Cox and Sam St. Clair — was recorded in a recent jam session just to be our gift today. MacColl, Seeger i Parker do każdej audycji gromadzili setki taśm z nagranymi wypowiedziami rozmówców, spośród nich wybierali najciekawsze i, uwaga, w oryginale puszczali w eter. Szok. Powstały programy zabawne, pouczające, poetyckie i zarazem bardzo autentyczne. 62 lata temu, w sierpniu 1960 roku premierę miał trzeci odcinek cyklu „Singing the Fishing” będący hołdem dla rybackich społeczności wschodniej Anglii i północno-wschodniej Szkocji. Odcinek ważny, i to z co najmniej trzech powodów powodów. Pierwszy to ten, że „Singing the Fishing” było pierwszym w cyklu dziełem w pełni zintegrowanym, wykorzystującym dopracowane już innowacyjne techniki wplatania muzyki w dokumentalną treść, dziełem które ustaliło ostateczny standard dla pozostałych oddcinków cyklu i wyznaczyło kierunek rozwoju tzw. „oral history” w radiu. Drugi powód to taki, że „Singing the Fishing” rozsławiło Cykl na całym świecie. Po zdobyciu Prix d'Italia dla radiowego dokumentu w październiku 1960 roku, audycja została wyemitowana w 86 krajach. No a trzecim powodem jest niezwykła piosenka. No właśnie - niezwykła. W „Radio Ballads” śpiewane były piosenki specjalnie na tę okoliczność napisane przez Ewana MacColla. Podczas nagrań do „Singing the Fishing” Ewan MacColl poznał starego rybaka Sama Larnera. Samuel jako 13 latek pod koniec XIX wieku pływał już jako chłopiec okrętowy, po 2 latach zamustrował na rybaki i wypływał na łowiska przez kolejne 39 lat. Na emeryturze jeździł po Anglii i śpiewał poznane w rybackich portach pieśni. Życie Sama zafascynowało Ewana do tego stopnia, że napisał w hołdzie rybakowi piosenkę. Powstała moja ulubiona pieśń rybacka „The Shoals of Herring” - Ławice Śledzi. Sail Ho Audycja zawiera utwory: Fragment audycji „Singing the Fishing” z cyklu „Radio ballads”, wyemitowanej 16 sierpnia 1960 roku w BBC Radio, autorzy: Ewan MacColl, Pete Seeger i Charls Parker “Ławice” w wykonaniu zespołu „Cztery Refy”, słowa: Andrzej Mendygrał, muzyka: Ewan MacColl “The Shoals of Herring” w wykonaniu Liama Clancy z zespołem, słowa i muzyka: Ewan MacColl

“no fear, no envy, no meanness” So the story goes, Liam Clancy proposed a toast to a young Bob Dylan, and as Dylan told it, Liam raised his pint of Guinness and said it: “Bob, No fear, no envy, no meanness.” It struck me. I wear that quote on my wrist…but most days I fail to live up to it, one way or another. But many days, I do. The word, resentment keeps coming up in my thoughts, these days, so the quote seemed appropriate. Resentment. It permeates our society. Feelings of being overlooked, ignored, marginalized and disrespected. We all feel resentful at times—hell, I feel slighted on a daily basis. We resent each other…for big things and small things. FDR said it’s all about fear and maybe he’s right, but it seems envy and resentment have crept up on fear these days. It’s a question of “deservingness,” as Kathy Cramer put it. We gaze in “at undeserving groups who don’t work as hard as we do.” They’re not one of us… Resentment didn’t appear out of thin air. America has a long history of it. We’ve been haunted by racism and nativism from the very beginning. Hell, ask the Irish…my ancestors--Help Wanted No Irish Need Apply. Of Course, a few decades later, they turn around and play a big role in the Civil War draft riots in New York City, targeting free blacks as scapegoats, so there you go. People in glass houses and all that. Ah, the scapegoat theory. Politicians who cultivate race consciousness and demonize others—give many someone or something to blame for their fears, frustrations, and failures. The politics of resentment rages on. Resentment has become a driving force in politics—from the left and from the right. Angry citizens who feel they have no voice, are feeding off it. It grows from a disaffection and distrust for traditional institutions and leaders. And I’m not saying we shouldn’t be pissed off at our representatives. There is plenty to be angry about. But maybe a cure for all this is to start looking up at people rather than down. I don’t have to look very far to find people who work harder than I do…who do more for others; endure more hardship; more pain; who complain less; tolerate more. That act of looking up and around—rather than down— is humbling, liberating and inspiring. Take it from an old moody Irishman—being angry and resentful is exhausting. It takes much less energy to be joyful and cheerful. Now if I could only practice what I preach. While I’m convinced that there are only spiritual and moral remedies to all this, a good dose of truth would help. We need to get out of our information silos and embrace some semblance of reality. Dostoevsky said, “The man who lies to himself can be more easily offended than anyone else. And he will revel in his resentment till he feels great pleasure in it.” It’s obvious that we all need to be a little more grateful, more understanding, more humble; less envious… The reality is there are people who are less deserving of help than others, but when I stop and think about it, I realize that I have far more blessings in my life than I deserve. I don’t know about you. And as far as my complaints? Mea Culpa…Mea Culpa, Mea maxima culpa. When it comes down to it, my problems are mostly my fault. So Let’stop blaming others! Let’s deal with our failures just as we deal with our successes. I think if we start there, the solutions to real problems become much clearer. NO FEAR, NO ENVY, NO MEANNESS

Hailing from Kiltealy, County Wexford, Anthony Kearns was born into a musical family. Growing up, he turned to singing and made his name locally in the hotel catering business as the "Singing Barman." After winning the "Ireland Searches for a Tenor" competition in 1993, Kearns went on to join The Irish Tenors before reaching international stardom and embarking on a solo career in his down time from the power trio. Anthony is widely renowned for his tremendous service to our veterans here in the U.S. and has routinely performed at veteran's events over the years. This week on Windy City Irish Radio, Tim and Mike visit with Anthony Kearns before his long-awaited return to the Irish American Heritage Center this Sunday November 13th.
